I had visited place once ~12 years ago. Glad I came back! I am really impressed with this place and we'll be back. We were greeted immediately and shown to the table I had requested (I requested a booth). At many restaurants, reinstated like the are ignored so this was really nice. I also was impressed that they didn't pull the "everyone must be present before you're seated" bs that I really dislike. They seated us and our 4th joined us soon after we ordered drinks. Props! Had an extremely mediocre meal last night at Wayfare Tavern. We showed up a few minutes early and were asked to wait in the bar. Found a bar table 2-top and sat down. We were given menus. Then we waited 15 minutes and were never approached for a drink. Oh well,,, hostess came and founds up and took us to our table. Said table was VERY small and shoved into a very small corner in back of a smallish but VERY loud room. Server took at least 10 minutes to greet our table and take a drink order. Drinks were fine but nothing to write home about. Ordered deviled eggs for an appetizer. Smoked paprika flavor was overwhelming and we left 4 of the six eggs uneaten. Dinner guest ordered Flat iron steak and fries. Said it was ok "Like a steak at Chili's". He left half his steak and didn't want a box to take the leftover. Also ordered the Mac-n-cheese side and said it was bland and had a mushy texture. I ordered the Black Cod. It was under seasoned and bland. Server was fine and I mean that in the most average and forgettable way. While I understand the restaurant was busy and they can't help noise levels or where we were sat (someone has to sit in that table, right?), I'm most disappointed in the things they could have controlled. Timely, friendly service and well seasoned quality food should be the cornerstones of any good restaurants and Wayfare Tavern displayed neither last night. One other rule I need to remember to live by. ALWAYS check yelp reviews vs. OpenTable. OT consistently has EXTREMELY high reviews that don't always "add up". Wayfare Tavern, for example is a 4.7 stars in over 8,300 reviews, while it only receives 3.9 stars in Yelp with over 4,000 people reviewing it on this platform. Just my opinion but for context I eat out for work 3-4x a weeks all over the country and Wayfare did not come close to a 4.7 star or even a 3.9 star experience. read more

It's unfortunate that an otherwise excellent meal was completely overshadowed by the manager. The food was excellent, and our servers did a great job. Based on those things alone, I would have happily recommended this restaurant. Unfortunately, the manager's behavior turned what should have been a great evening into an embarrassing and unnecessarily uncomfortable experience. He was cheesy and off-putting when he seated us, but the real issue came with our roughly $700 bill. When the restaurant mishandled the credit cards we used to split it, instead of simply correcting the mistake, he made a scene at our table and tried to embarrass us into handling it ourselves because he didn't want to redo the charges. Completely unprofessional and unnecessary. Great food and service, but I won't be back and can't recommend it. read more

Such a beautiful space! Really helps make the dining experience feel special. Excellent apps and mains. Maybe best beef tartare I've ever had. Solid Caesar with real anchovies, not overdressed. Roasted prime beef and verlasso salmon were incredibly tender but what really knocked it outta the park was the seasoning and veg sides - the ponzu braised cabbage under the salmon, the hen of the woods and potato puree under the beef. Didn't get the fried chicken this time but it's incredible. Burrata whipped potatoes haricot verts, chocolate cupcake, and Madelines were solid. Assume options off the event menu are better. I do understand why people like this restaurant and why it's so popular. We came to celebrate my husband's birthday and were seated outside. Honestly, maybe it was because we were seated outdoors, but the service wasn't great. It took a while just to get someone's attention so we could find our waiter. Our waiter also never introduced himself, so we didn't know who to look for, and he seemed to stay mostly inside the restaurant, which made it harder to flag him down. Luckily, once our order was taken, the food came out pretty quickly. Between my husband and me, we shared the fried chicken, mac and cheese, and burger with fries. Mac and Cheese: 3/5 I love a white cheese sauce, so I was excited to try this since the pictures made it look really good. Unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. The noodles seemed soggy because they kept breaking apart, and there wasn't much cheese sauce. It also kind of felt like the sauce had split, where the oil separated from the cheese. I ended up adding some of the garlic pieces from the chicken for more flavor. Wouldn't get again. Fried Chicken: 4/5 This was juicy and flavorful. The dark meat pieces were my favorite. The skin was super crispy without being too thick or too thin, and overall it was seasoned really well. I understand why so many people order this dish. Now that I've tried it though, I don't know if I'd specifically order it again unless I came with a bigger party. We didn't fully finish the dish bc I felt the white meat was a little dry. Burger w/ Fries: The fries were honestly my favorite thing we ordered. Thin, crispy, and well seasoned. 5/5 would absolutely get again. I can't speak too much about the burger itself since I only had a couple bites, but it was very flavorful, hearty, and smoky. If you go, I'd recommend trying to get an inside table, maybe you'll have better luck with service. The outdoor seat cushions looked a little stained/dirty, and since it was windy outside, dirt was blowing into our cups. Just something to keep in mind. OBSESSED. Popped in early and put our names on the list after day 1 of training at work and wow this is a must eat spot. I split the burger & a Caesar salad paired with a dirty martini and wow was this the perfect mix. Their fries are super shoestring and so yum. Only thing I would change is their lack of mustard / condiments. Service was fast and they split our burger and gave us both full sides of fries. Wayfare Tavern was founded by the celebrity chef Tyler Florence, along with other famous restaurant, such as Miller & Lux, Wayfare Tavern is serving authentic American dishes inspired by San Francisco's golden age of dining. Wayfare Tavern recently moved to the current address on Pine Street near Market Street, which is a great location for lunch and dinner options for people working in FiDi and Soma areas. The marble and wooden floor, with glamorous golden wall paper and red velvet sofas and chairs, also the floor to ceiling bar area all transport customers instantly to the splendor of early 1900s. WT Espresso Martini $16 I ordered one of my favorite cocktail, the Espresso Martini. Made with Meili Vodka, and Meletti Coffee Liqueur Espresso. Pearl Coast $11 My friend got the refreshing mocktail option. The Pearl Coast is made with rice water, cinnamon, and cream of coconut. Tasted like a summer drink in Southeast Asia. Clam Chowder $16 One of our favorite dishes was the clam chowder. The clam chowder was served with clam bellies, smoked bacon-jalapeno hushpuppies, and poured with hot and creamy chowder tableside. It was great to dip the popover into it too! Chef's Selection of West Coast Oysters $56 We got a dozen of the oysters for appetizer, came with charred lemon, giardineira mignonette, and house-made hot sauce. Some of the oysters still has tiny pieces of the shell inside. Yuzu Glazed Salmon $34 The glazed salmon was very good with crispy skin. On the side there were dashi braised cabbage, crispy garlic, and seasoned with okonomi sauce, and some sorrel. Burrata Whipped Potatoes $13 For the side, we got the burrata whipped Yukon gold potatoes, mixed with smoked olive oil. Very creamy and fresh. Had reservations to celebrate cousin's birthday. Service was great, waiter friendly , made sure everything was up to par, especially when one of our cocktail glass had a big chip/crack and should not have been served to guests. Seating was cramped as they sat our party of 5 next to 2 tables of 2 (split for more seating) but left little room to get into the benched seating so tables would get bumped. We always like to try seafood towers if they have one and this was good, everything fresh (wished the butter for lobster came warm, but the sauces were on point). I didn't take pics of everyone else's meals, but my bone-in pork chop was dry, the most delicious parts were the sides with it (braised greens and mustard potato salad). The bavette steak frites needed some salt despite the truffle seasoning. Pricey for what it is but busy nonetheless, Wayfare Tavern offers a menu of standard bistro fare in an elevated pub setting. Coming in for a special event, my favorite bites were the passed appetizers, which included burrata and fig jam tarts, tuna tartare, and steak crostini. For appetizers, the Roasted Button Mushroom Soup was a dark, clear broth poured over chopped vegetables; the Tavern Caesar was a classic salad of chopped romaine with anchovies, Parmesan, and croutons, all tossed in a creamy Caesar dressing; and on the side came an airy baked popover with salted butter. For our main dish, we had a duet of Branzino, a crispy skin-on fillet topped with a fennel gremolata and lemon agrumato (olive oil), and Wagyu Bavette Steak, cooked to a juicy medium rare and served over roasted hen of the woods mushrooms and potato puree. The sides included grilled asparagus and burrata whipped potatoes. Everything we had was simple but tasty and executed nicely. Had dinner with a friend here and it was sooo good! It was a weekday night, we sat at the bar, it wasn't too busy, and we ordered A LOT of food but it felt like they were still rushing us to leave towards the end. Would've been five stars if we didn't feel that pressured to leave! The beef carpaccio with homemade chips was sooo good. The chips were the perfect vessel, super light and crispy! I definitely preferred the steak frites over the CA fried chicken, the steak was cooked perfectly and the fries were thin and crispy. The chicken was a tiny bit dry and I wish it came with some sort of dipping sauce. For the desserts, the churro donut was definitely the standout! It was a mix between a churro and a donut, very light and fluffy and I loved the ice cream and drizzle of chocolate on top. Just popped in for a quick drinky drink, but had a great time during my short visit here. Walked in around 7:30, and this place was rockin! So many folks were in here and the bar was nearly full. I ended up getting a seat at the side bar facing the street. Not ideal, but sometimes beggars can't be choosers. Was greeted by the super nice waiter and ordered a Barbary Coast. I'm going to stop here to talk about how nice everyone in here was. From the hostess to the waitstaff. Everyone her was so friendly and made sure I was as comfortable as possible. I'm obsessed with great customer service, so I always notice when establishments go above and beyond. Ok Back to the Barbary Coast! It was splendid. Gin based and lemony. Ultra refreshing and best of all, served in a pretty glass. I loved it! By the time I was almost finished with my drink, a fresh popover arrived on my plate with some butter. I couldn't let it be lonely, so of course, I ordered another Barbary coast. Great little 45 minutes at Wayfare Tavern! We came here for a weekday dinner, and it was bustling inside with a lot of people who looked like they'd also just come straight for work. The meal started with complimentary popovers that were crisp on the outside and soft inside. Everything I tried was full of flavor. The clam chowder was rich, creamy, peppery, and loaded with clams, and the cocktail shrimp were generously sized and very fresh. I couldn't finish everything, so they thoughtfully packaged my leftovers, stored them with the hostess, and gave me a claim stub to pick them up on the way out. A dozen oysters showed up and we brought it up to our server who profusely apologized and said it was his "bad" and he would cover it but for us to enjoy the dozen. Ubered to Wayfare Tavern the night of the power outage and I was sure nerve wracked when I got there. Perfect timing for a martini and they do make a good one. They turned people away without reservations do be sure to make one. We got settled at a nice little table. Complimentary popovers arrived snd were warm and yummy. I was in the mood for a burger and they delivered. Very tasty and the roll wasn't soggy. Those skinny fries are just my type and they were great. My husband liked his salmon. We tried the donuts for dessert and they were really good. I would have enjoyed more choices on the dessert menu but we were happy enough with the donuts. The waiter was attentive and friendly. We had reservations on a Thursday evening and were seated in the back room which is a different vibe from the front of the restaurant and the bar/kitchen area. We felt almost forgotten at the beginning. We did enjoy their house made mint lemonade. After we got through appetizers, the service was better than at the beginning. We started with the complementary popover bread which was fluffy and delicious. We ordered the deviled eggs and clam chowder and both were rich in flavor so we had a strong start. For the main entrees we did the $199.00 44oz bone-in ribeye dish that was cooked and seasoned to perfection, but it wasn't hot. I felt like it had been sitting for a long time before it got to us just warm. We went with the burrata whipped potatoes and the crispy Brussels sprouts as the sides. The burrata whipped potatoes were the best. Rich and whipped, but they were also cold upon arrival at our table. The Brussels sprouts weren't as crispy as promoted, but had very good seasoning. We also got the Verlasso Salmon and the maple citrus glaze on the salmon paired well with the root vegetable purée. Probably the best dish of the night. For dessert we got the Pumpkin Roll and Apple Tarte Tatin. Both solid choices. The pumpkin roll came with a warm bourbon maple syrup that elevated the sponge cake. The apple dessert came with cheddar cheese gelato, which we thought was interesting, but it tied it together nicely with the sweetness of the apples. The food was just okay, and unfortunately I wouldn't return. I ordered the clam chowder and was disappointed by how little clam was actually in it--there were only a few small pieces throughout the soup. The black cod was also extremely salty, to the point that it overpowered the dish. On the positive side, our waiter was very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was enjoyable. What really frustrated me was the way our leftovers were handled. When we asked for our food to be packed to go, we intentionally combined everything we wanted to keep onto one plate. However, when I got home, I discovered that my steak had been thrown away and only the fish was packed. I don't understand why anyone would discard food without asking first, especially when it was clearly on the plate we wanted boxed. There was a reason we combined everything onto one plate, and a simple question could have avoided the confusion. I am also just review our bill and the menu price for the clam chowder was $17 and they charged us $21 for it..DOUBLE CHECK YOUR BILL! Overall, the service from our waiter and the atmosphere were good, but the food and the mishandling of our leftovers left a negative impression. We went during Memorial Day Monday for lunch. Walked in before noon and was seated right away . Love the decor. Very Americana. It did start to fill up soon after so perhaps reservations are wise. I think we ordered everything! Deviled eggs was huge for 2 people, but not complaining because it was delicious. Also had the baked brie i believe with the most delicious pretzels ever. And the complimentary puffed bread was so good. I had Cobb salad and added the super tasty fried chicken. Hubs got the burger. We also ordered assortment of white and red wines. Chef's kiss! I've been a fan of Wayfare Tavern for years, and the new location somehow manages to raise the bar even higher. The service is consistently excellent, and the warm popovers are still the thing that pulls you in from the start. The rest of the menu is executed with the kind of precision that keeps you coming back. The burger remains one of the best in town, and I appreciate that they stay proudly normcore in all the right ways. Add Tyler Florence's influence throughout the menu and you end up with a spot that always delivers. My only small quibble is the same one I had with the previous location. It feels like there's one more barstool at the main bar than the space really wants to accommodate. It's minor and definitely not enough to keep me away. My only complaint was my stomach not being big enough to finish everything we had. We were greeted quickly and seated at the bar which was preferred actually. All the staff members are friendly and on top of their game. It was a pleasure watching them move around the dining area with such grace and ease. The restaurant itself is a pretty cool visual being a square black building on the outside to a vibrant and cozy atmosphere on the inside. We got the clam chowder to start and it was the most unique soup I ever had. I wouldn't call it clam chowder but it was delicious and the presentation of it was spectacular. We got the tavern burger and the fried chicken as they were recommended as their best sellers. The burger was a little pink for my liking but that's my fault in ordering it medium rare and next time I will opt for medium but besides my mistake the burger and fries was excellent. Now for the star, the fried chicken. It looked like normal fried chicken but it has to be the most herb filled fried chicken I ever tasted. The other interesting thing about this fried chicken were the lack of bones in the breast and thigh meat. So the chefs must be taking extra time when butchering the chicken and I appreciate that. Friday happy hour with friends is always a great way to start a weekend. We shared the Petaluma Farm deviled eggs, shoestring fries, whipped feta with blistered sun tomatoes, and a side of string beans. The deviled eggs were definitely the standout, and I can see why they're so popular. The fries were crispy and addicting, and the whipped feta with the sweet tomatoes was a nice combination. I ordered the mojito, and my friend had the dirty martini (sorry, we almost finished it before I remembered to take a picture ). My mojito was refreshing, but a little light for my taste. My friend really enjoyed the martini and thought the drinks were great. The atmosphere was lively, the service was friendly, and it's an easy spot to meet up with friends after work. Was grateful to get a reservation on Valentines Day! My niece called them and they were able to seat a group of us (7) within an hour. Excellent service, and the food was great. Some highlights - the popovers of course, the clam chowder, and my fried chicken was very good. The ambience was both romantic but capable of seating multiple people. Enjoy! read more

A great spot for a nice team lunch. Our party trickled in, and the staff were accommodating. The popovers were warm and a nice start to the dining experience. The apps of beef tartare and deviled eggs were excellent - very flavorful. Our party tried several different dishes: - Fried chicken was a hit - not too greasy and well seasoned - Burgers were well liked - The salmon was tender and well cooked - The chicken on the salad was unfortunately dry - Mashed potatoes were stunning - creamy, almost too greasy, but in a good way - Squash was just okay, a bit greasy and not well-seasoned Overall, a nice environment with delicious food. read more

We had been to Wayfare Tavern back in 2022 and absolutely loved it, so we were really looking forward to returning. Unfortunately, our experience this time was completely different, and the overall vibe of the restaurant seems to have changed. We had a reservation for four on a Saturday evening. When we arrived, we were told we could have a table inside, but only for an hour and a half. We agreed because sitting outside along a busy street with buses, trucks, and traffic going by wasn't particularly appealing. The service was okay and our food came out fairly quickly, but throughout the meal we had the distinct feeling that they were trying to move us along. No one checked to see if I wanted another drink, and what really bothered us was that the check was brought to the table without anyone asking if we wanted dessert, coffee, or another round of drinks. We were still within the 90-minute time limit they had given us, so there was no obvious reason for the rush. I may or may not have ordered dessert, but I would have liked the opportunity to look at the dessert menu and decide. Being handed the check without even being offered dessert made us feel less like guests and more like a table they wanted to turn over as quickly as possible. What made this especially disappointing was remembering how much we enjoyed Wayfare Tavern the first time. We specifically chose to come back because of that experience, but this visit felt much more transactional and rushed. For a restaurant at this price point, I expect to be able to relax and enjoy dinner rather than feel like I'm on a countdown. Sadly, I don't think we'll be returning. read more

The interiors were a dream, designed by the ever-talented Jon de la Cruz, a kababayan whose work truly captures both elegance and soul. If you ever dine here, touch the wallpaper. Trust me--it's art you can feel. Before our meal even began, we were surprised with a complimentary champagne toast, a simple yet profoundly touching gesture. Then came the popover, buttery, golden, and cloud-soft--honestly one of life's small perfections. We started with Deviled Eggs, and I can confidently say--these were the best I've ever had. Each bite was creamy, tangy, and perfectly seasoned. The Tavern Burger arrived, accompanied by dangerously addictive shoestring fries--one bite and I understood why it's legendary. Then, as a self-proclaimed fried-chicken devotee, the California Fried Chicken took my breath away: crisp, juicy, full of heart, and unmistakably Californian. And to end the savory symphony, the Burrata Whipped Potatoes--so delicate, buttery, and dreamy, they could melt even the coldest heart. Came because it's within walking distance of our hotel and a trusted friend recommended it. So glad we tried it, food was great but the service made it even more special. Very busy on a Monday night, clearly a popular spot for after work meals and business dinners. We could only get an outside table and one of the overhead heaters wasn't initially working but our server David got the kids situated and everyone blankets. Started with half dozen oysters and shoestring fries. Two orders of fried chicken and two orders of the cavatelli. Everything was stellar but the fresh popovers and fried chicken were the stars of the show. Fried chicken was almost a half chicken per serving, perfectly seasoned and fried. So good. A lovely gentleman named Ethan came by halfway through dinner and fixed one set of the heat lamps which made things much more comfortable. And we had several other personable staff checking on us throughout the meal. Thank you to David and Ethan for taking great care of us and being so lovely to our children as well. We heard Wayfare Tavern moved locations and wanted to check out the new spot. The old location was a bit dark and dingy, but had it's own hidden alleyway charm to it. The new location is bright and elegant, quite a different vibe than the original location... but how's the food? I've always loved the steak tartare at Wayfare Tavern and happy to report it's just as good as before. The beef is incredibly fresh and they achieve a harmonious balance between acidic components like the pickled shallots and fried capers and the rich components. Only slight complaint is that the chips were of inconsistent thicknesses and some were way too thick and ended up being very hard to bite. We also tried the clam chowder and both agreed that was pretty terrible. The chowder itself had a weird gummy consistency that was neither pleasant in the mouth nor tasty. There really wasn't any clam flavor to speak of so it tasted more like a gummy potato chowder. I'd recommend skipping this. The burger was amazing - perfectly cooked and super juicy. It's a bit messy to eat, but what great burger isn't? The fries were thin and crisp so if you like crispy fries, you'll love these. The famous fried chicken was juicy but a bit heavy in the herbs and garlic, which were not only added as a garnish, but featured prominently in some part of the batter. Overall, if you like lots of thyme and garlic, you'll probably love this, but it was a miss for us and not sure we'd order it again. So overall, the new location is beautiful but lacks the tavern vibe that was abundant in the old location. It feels more upscale now, perhaps to attract more visitors rather than locals. The food was hit or miss - some things were great (steak tartare, burger) and others were less so. We'll definitely be back to try some other items but I'm happy to report this is still one of the best places to get a steak tartare, especially with the recent closure of Monsieur Benjamin (RIP) in the Hayes. read more

My waiter Wade was so accommodating and friendly! I got the Kale & Chicory salad and it was beyond my expectations. Who knew Kale salad could be so good! They also served a complementary popover ( like a Yorkshire pudding but better) that was delicious. I was also able to try the famous deviled eggs. I was dining alone and really appreciated that I was able to get a small order of the deviled eggs and a half salad. I had driven by many times and always thought the place looked like a fun spot to dine, especially on the sidewalk as I like sitting outside and watching people go by. Inside was also more beautiful than I expected. I hope to go back again on my next visit to SF! Also, I want to try the burrata whipped potatoes! read more
