It has been 30 years since I have been to BIX. I still find the decor appealing, and I like the vibe. Now I am here with my adult children, who also enjoyed the space, and pulling up into an alley and walking up to the substantial front door sets a tone that still works years later. BIX is clearly a restaurant that knows the biz and what they are doing, no question. I recognize that finding staff is challenging across all business sectors, so this review is written with that in mind. I was the first of my party to arrive and was instructed to wait at the bar, and the hostess offered to check my jacket. My first impression was that the hostess was wearing a very worn turtleneck top and burnt yellow pants. I didn't think the outfit fit the restaurant's decor. The bar is a classic, and you won't find a lot of trendy craft cocktails, so a Martini was in order. It was respectable. The rest of my party arrived, and we were escorted to our table on the second floor. The bartender requested that I settle up before being seated. I scooch off the bar stool and am holding a nearly full Martini, and I was a little surprised that it was not offered to deliver my drink to the table. I walked up the entire flight of stairs and didn't spill a drop, but honestly, I felt the drink should have been delivered to our table. After being seated, the server seemed very rushed and a little frazzled, does not introduce himself, and only asks about water. All of us, at varying ages, thought the lighting was too dim. The amber-orange lighting is part of the jazz club vibe, but the Kelvins need an adjustment- too low, making it difficult to read the menu, even with the table lighting. It took several minutes for cocktail orders to be taken. Not sure, there was a check back on cocktails, and orders were finally taken for appetizers. I had to ask the server for a rundown, and he only mentioned that the potato pillows are very popular before scurrying away. At this point, we started to feel that our server was only there to take orders and nothing more. Appetizers: the potato pillows reminded me of tater tots; instead of shredded potatoes, they were made with mashed potatoes. Hamachi crudo was solid, and the chicken liver mousse was the hit. The celery soup was flavorless and a bit watery. Cesar salad was good, but the portion could have been slightly bigger. My son enjoyed the sole. I thought the piece of fish seemed a bit small. Two of us had the pork chop. It was moist and flavorful, but too salty. A steak patty was ordered and was enjoyed, but the guinea fowl was disappointing. When ordering wine, I asked the server about a Zinfandel or the Vacqueyras. He quickly answered Zinfandel without asking about preferences or offering pairing suggestions. I regretted ordering the Zinfndel. Desserts were basic, and a couple of us had a Carajillo-type cocktail. A coffee was ordered but forgotten, and arrived after the dessert. Would I return? There are so many other choices in the city at this price point. The bottom line: go for the atmosphere. The live jazz and the decor are the draw. I am not trying to be harsh here and I know staff are so difficult to hire these days, but hopefully this hurts the heart slightly to evoke some attention to detail and change so this place can last another 30 years, but not trying to hurt the heart enough to make the staff bail from providing a good product, with excellent service and a smile. My brothers and I did Bix for the New Year's Eve dinner. The night had some ups and downs, but the live music really made it for me. The band was great, and being seated on the first floor meant we got the music up close. It does get loud though, so if that's not your thing, then the upstairs seating would probably be better. The decor and artwork above the bar are beautiful, unique, and fit the space really well. Our waitress was very friendly, which I loved. Speaking about their food, it was a bit hit or miss, and the pacing was super slow. The first course came out about 40 minutes in, and the whole meal took close to four hours. Even with our reservations, we waited around 20 minutes to be seated, and I noticed a few groups ahead of us leave because of the wait time. It also felt a little awkward too standing in the middle of the bar all smooshed inside while waiting for our table. Most of the starters were letdowns for me. The truffled steak tartare was overwhelmed by raw shallots and the lobster roll had a very wet, watered-down lobster meat (disappointing for someone raised in Maine). My first course was the Dungeness crab Louie tart and it had a nice portion of crab with a tasty avocado mousse, but the tart underneath was stale, which really took away from it. The main entree was the highlight of my meal. I chose the American Wagyu New York Strip and it was cooked perfectly medium rare. It came with very minimal sides, but it didn't matter to me because I just wanted steak haha. Dessert was the largest portion in the meal. The tarte Tatin was good, but leaned heavily on warm apple caramel and could've used more vanilla ice cream for balance. For drinks, the cocktails were underwhelming and a bit flat for taste, especially the Elixir No. 3. In hindsight, wine or simple spirits would have been a better move for me. One small observation I did see at the place is that when the music really got going, people at the bar clearly wanted to jive to the tunes, but it was quickly shut down, so this is definitely a no-dancing kind of place, even on NYE. Bottom line, BIX shines with its music, atmosphere, and vibe. The food didn't fully live up to the night, yet the whole experience was still enjoyable because of good company and the other friendly patrons that night. read more

It sells steakhouse vibes but there was only one cut of steak on the menu and the waiter basically said the other dishes were better (albeit the menu rotates and a colleague said there's usually more steak options). Doesn't really matter to me as I was ordering fish anyway. I will say the fish was well cooked and had good flavor to it. Nothing super unique or blow-you-away but it was good. It is a very attractive place and just my type but the noise was just too deafening. I don't enjoy screaming at my partner across the table. Came across this place while trying to find a reservation for a Saturday night while in down. So made a reservation and headed over. BIX is down a little alley type street, and may not seem like much from the outside, but stepping inside takes you back to a time of elegance. We were seated once all of our party was present and immediately ordered cocktails. Drinks were pretty good, can't complain about them, each distinct with a good balance of flavor and spirit. For appetizers, we started with the potato pillows with caviar and bone marrow. The potato pillows were just that, deep fried potato, crispy on the outside, crispy on the inside, soft on the inside, with creme fraiche and caviar. Just a little but it goodness, though the caviar really didn't stand out as I thought it would. The bone marrow was ample in size and portion with your standard bread and a little salad with vinaigrette to cut the richness of the marrow. Another great appetizer. Entrees, the chicken hash was recommended as it had been in the menu for over 20 years. It came on a bed of craved leeks and chanterelles. Overall, a very underwhelming dish with two coffee patties, breaded and fried. A little dry on the inside. Was just hoping for something more for a dish that had been on the menu for so long. The lobster spaghetti also felt like a little of a let down, thought it had a nice amount of lobster meat, as well as a little heat from the calabrian chili sofrito. Overall, just felt it needed some other flavor profiles to pull it all together. The steak hache could be described as a hamburger patty with pepper covered in a sauce. Had a nice flavor to the sauce but what sitting you would run back for. And the pork chop was actually a decent dish with glazed apples on top and fennel cream. Overall, cocktails were tasty and the bone marrow was great. Entrees left a lot to be desired for our table, though the pork chop was decent. First the alley leading to the restaurant was very cute and set the vibe. The restaurant itself was really pretty. Classic and totally gave a speak easy vibe. Everything we ate was delicious! My two favorite items were the Jamon Croquets and the Market Salad. Amazing!! The Jamon croquet was my favorite bite of the night. My entree was the Chicken Hash, it was something I had never had before but it was really really good. My boyfriend had the Sol and said it was good. We made a reservation on Friday night for my husband's birthday. We arrived 30 minutes early because we were concerned about parking. Parking is primarily on the street, but there's a convenient paid public lot on Sansome Street, just a short walk from the restaurant. The ambiance inside is wonderful--you can hear the piano playing and admire the beautiful artwork on the walls. Both the service and the food were excellent! We especially loved that the restaurant features live piano music, and around 8:30 p.m., they transition to live jazz, which really added to the experience. Our party came here for a family birthday celebration and this was the perfect spot. We timed our dinner reservation perfectly so that we were able to listen to the live jazz starting at 7. Our group was seated in a booth upstairs with a perfect view of the musicians, which we loved. The space is stunning - classy, warm, and just a touch moody. Bix is a lot of fun! I came here with a group of friends. We had made a reservation but it took awhile to get seated anyway. We ordered cocktails at the bar in the mean time. Box often has live music playing. You'll see a lot of people dressed up in suits and ladies in heels and dresses. It's an interesting format because there is some dining up stairs in kind of a vouyer style so you look over everyone. We shared some dishes so that we could try everything like the bone marrow, potatoes with caviar, and some other items to share. This place is fancy and pricey. Honestly we left hungry. My fried joked we would go to in n out after. We spent quite a bit on food and drinks that evening as we were there for a celebration. The ambiance is nice. It feels more like New York and it's great that we have a spot like this in San Francisco for the occasions you want to wine and dine. Everything was cooked perfectly and the cocktails were tasty. Really disappointing second visit to Bix. We've been to restaurants before where you have the feeling of an esprit de corps from the wait staff. A sense of community, of brotherhood. A shared project to make the dining experience and restaurant great, a second home for the staff and the diners. That's what Bix seemed to have the first time we visited. The beautiful tall ceilings, interesting and fitting art, contemplative jazz, lively hum, friendly service. This time, while the lively buzz, jazz, and decor remained, something seems to have been lost in the service. It felt more like a pressure cooker than a community. Servers brought out wrong orders, had brusque (borderline rude) conversations with us, lost track of us when we were being seated, and so on. We were not eagerly welcomed, there was no interest in who we were, no time to talk. In and out. Perhaps it's just a one off, but it was stinging and so I felt I had to share it. The food was also disappointing. I had the duck hash and my fiancée had the pork chop. We also tried the hors d'œuvres sampler, which had a very salty deviled egg and what seemed to be as another reviewer put it a tater tot. We also tried the bone marrow. The marrow was incredibly oily and though there was an acidic side salad to help it was not enough. The duck hash was not too bad. It was ok. And the pork chop was fine as well. Sad to see it. My family and I went to Bix for my mom's birthday. We arrived around 5 and the restaurant was about half way full. The restaurant itself and ambiance is very nice. Around 6, the live music started. We enjoyed some drinks before ordering our appetizers. I ordered the pisco punch, which was very good. Slightly sweet, slightly sour, and refreshing. Others ordered a French 75, the Gold Rush, and Pear Blossom. Everyone seemed to like their drinks. We ordered the marrow bones and sampler to start. The sampler came with the potato pillow, truffle cheese croques, and the deviled egg. The potato pillow was definitely the star of the show. The outside was nice and crispy with a soft inside and pleasant salty taste from the caviar. The truffle cheese croques tasted like a simple grilled cheese, but were still very enjoyable. The deviled egg had a slight truffle flavor. They were good, but not my favorite. The bone marrow was also delicious. Slightly salty and rich. It also came with a parsley, caper, onion salad which paired nicely with the bread and bone marrow. For entrees, we ordered the pork chops, braised short ribs, poached cod, veal potpie, and chicken hash. I ordered the chicken hash and it was ... okay. It was pretty underwhelming. The chicken didn't have much flavor and the puree underneath was slightly sweet. I also ordered the truffle risotto, which was delicious, it definitely saved my meal. My mom ordered the veal pot pie and loved it. My fiance ordered the short ribs, which were good... but not great. My sister ordered the fish and, again, it was a bit bland. My dad ordered the pork chops and they were also pretty good, but nothing crazy. We ended the meal with the fig leaf panna cotta and poached pears. Our waiter was kind enough to put a candle in my mom's dessert. Both of the desserts were very enjoyable. They were not overwhelmingly sweet, and had pleasant textures to balance out the dish. My fiance also ordered the espresso martini, which had a nice rich coffee flavor. Although the entrees were just okay, the overall experience was very enjoyable. The service was spectacular. Our table was constantly cleaned, our dishes were always replaced, and our waiter was very pleasant. The appetizers, drinks, and desserts also made up for the entrees! Fantastic ambiance- classy old time SF- piano player and sax without drowning out dinner conversation. Scott our waitperson was fantastic- attentive without hovering. Cocktails as always were on point and excellent wine list as well- recently discovered Sicilian wines and they had one from Mt Etna that did not disappoint. We're with a party of six and the appetizer sampler was fabulous- I have to say though thé mini sandwiches paled In comparison to the potato pillows and the deviled eggs. Entrees included the crab pasta- the greens were deemed too thick but otherwise thé pasta and crab were outstanding. Other members of the group had the hachette- aka ground beef which was good quality but the real star were the pomme frites! Lastly the bavette steak was delicious with the fresh grilled asparagus-winner!! STOMACH CHURNING DISGUST AT BIX: Formerly Elegant, Now Unacceptable I have known Bix for years as a refined, serious restaurant suitable for business and romantic dinners. That reputation did not survive my most recent visit. During our meal, a nearby table engaged in an overt sexual act--prolonged, visible, and completely inappropriate for any restaurant, let alone one at this price point. This was not affectionate behavior. It was vulgar, deliberate, and impossible to ignore. What was truly appalling was that staff and management did nothing. Servers walked by. The room was fully aware. No intervention, no discretion, no concern for the rest of the diners. I was forced to physically reposition myself to shield my dining companion and cut the evening short. That is not an experience anyone should have at a high‑end restaurant. This is behavior I would expect to get shut down instantly at a mediocre bar. At Bix, it was apparently tolerated. That alone tells you everything you need to know about the current standards--or lack thereof. Fine dining is about atmosphere, judgment, and respect for guests. On this night, Bix demonstrated none of the above. Once excellent. Now careless. I will not return. read more

Will NEVER come back. Have tried this place couple years ago. I ordered duck breast and it was burned and bitter. Recently my husband and I decided to give it a second chance. I ordered the cod and it tastes like a rehydrated salted fish. The servers are very good at their job, but sounds like they are not getting paid enough to make a living. Regret come back here and would not recommend anyone that love food try this place. read more
