It has been 30 years since I have been to BIX. I still find the decor appealing, and I like the vibe. Now I am here with my adult children, who also enjoyed the space, and pulling up into an alley and walking up to the substantial front door sets a tone that still works years later. BIX is clearly a restaurant that knows the biz and what they are doing, no question. I recognize that finding staff is challenging across all business sectors, so this review is written with that in mind. I was the first of my party to arrive and was instructed to wait at the bar, and the hostess offered to check my jacket. My first impression was that the hostess was wearing a very worn turtleneck top and burnt yellow pants. I didn't think the outfit fit the restaurant's decor. The bar is a classic, and you won't find a lot of trendy craft cocktails, so a Martini was in order. It was respectable. The rest of my party arrived, and we were escorted to our table on the second floor. The bartender requested that I settle up before being seated. I scooch off the bar stool and am holding a nearly full Martini, and I was a little surprised that it was not offered to deliver my drink to the table. I walked up the entire flight of stairs and didn't spill a drop, but honestly, I felt the drink should have been delivered to our table. After being seated, the server seemed very rushed and a little frazzled, does not introduce himself, and only asks about water. All of us, at varying ages, thought the lighting was too dim. The amber-orange lighting is part of the jazz club vibe, but the Kelvins need an adjustment- too low, making it difficult to read the menu, even with the table lighting. It took several minutes for cocktail orders to be taken. Not sure, there was a check back on cocktails, and orders were finally taken for appetizers. I had to ask the server for a rundown, and he only mentioned that the potato pillows are very popular before scurrying away. At this point, we started to feel that our server was only there to take orders and nothing more. Appetizers: the potato pillows reminded me of tater tots; instead of shredded potatoes, they were made with mashed potatoes. Hamachi crudo was solid, and the chicken liver mousse was the hit. The celery soup was flavorless and a bit watery. Cesar salad was good, but the portion could have been slightly bigger. My son enjoyed the sole. I thought the piece of fish seemed a bit small. Two of us had the pork chop. It was moist and flavorful, but too salty. A steak patty was ordered and was enjoyed, but the guinea fowl was disappointing. When ordering wine, I asked the server about a Zinfandel or the Vacqueyras. He quickly answered Zinfandel without asking about preferences or offering pairing suggestions. I regretted ordering the Zinfndel. Desserts were basic, and a couple of us had a Carajillo-type cocktail. A coffee was ordered but forgotten, and arrived after the dessert. Would I return? There are so many other choices in the city at this price point. The bottom line: go for the atmosphere. The live jazz and the decor are the draw. I am not trying to be harsh here and I know staff are so difficult to hire these days, but hopefully this hurts the heart slightly to evoke some attention to detail and change so this place can last another 30 years, but not trying to hurt the heart enough to make the staff bail from providing a good product, with excellent service and a smile. It was a weeknight, and the place was packed.

We came here for a weeknight date dinner, and what a lovely experience!! Highly recommend making a reservation, the place was already packed at 6 pm on a Tuesday. It gets quite loud so you may have to yell to hear your date The potato pillows were so decadent and to DIE for, so delicious. The chicken liver mousse spread on some buttery toast was also the absolute perfect appetizer. And I loved the brioche bread pudding, so molten it tasted like a lava cake

Anniversary dinner at Bix was nice. Love the old world charm of this place. Live music added to the feels. We ordered petrale sole and dates wrapped in bacon. Both were delish. As was the dessert - bread pudding - and drinks - Manhattan and Irish whiskey.

My brothers and I did Bix for the New Year's Eve dinner. The night had some ups and downs, but the live music really made it for me. The band was great, and being seated on the first floor meant we got the music up close. It does get loud though, so if that's not your thing, then the upstairs seating would probably be better. The decor and artwork above the bar are beautiful, unique, and fit the space really well. Our waitress was very friendly, which I loved. Speaking about their food, it was a bit hit or miss, and the pacing was super slow. The first course came out about 40 minutes in, and the whole meal took close to four hours. Even with our reservations, we waited around 20 minutes to be seated, and I noticed a few groups ahead of us leave because of the wait time. It also felt a little awkward too standing in the middle of the bar all smooshed inside while waiting for our table. Most of the starters were letdowns for me. The truffled steak tartare was overwhelmed by raw shallots and the lobster roll had a very wet, watered-down lobster meat (disappointing for someone raised in Maine). My first course was the Dungeness crab Louie tart and it had a nice portion of crab with a tasty avocado mousse, but the tart underneath was stale, which really took away from it. The main entree was the highlight of my meal. I chose the American Wagyu New York Strip and it was cooked perfectly medium rare. It came with very minimal sides, but it didn't matter to me because I just wanted steak haha. Dessert was the largest portion in the meal. The tarte Tatin was good, but leaned heavily on warm apple caramel and could've used more vanilla ice cream for balance. For drinks, the cocktails were underwhelming and a bit flat for taste, especially the Elixir No. 3. In hindsight, wine or simple spirits would have been a better move for me. One small observation I did see at the place is that when the music really got going, people at the bar clearly wanted to jive to the tunes, but it was quickly shut down, so this is definitely a no-dancing kind of place, even on NYE. Bottom line, BIX shines with its music, atmosphere, and vibe. The food didn't fully live up to the night, yet the whole experience was still enjoyable because of good company and the other friendly patrons that night.

I really wanted to like Bix but it just wasn't for me. A lot of other people seem to like it - the place was packed ( Friday night) and it was four deep at the bar. It is a very attractive place and just my type but the noise was just too deafening. I don't enjoy screaming at my partner across the table. The live music doesn't help the noise level. It doesn't seem like you go there for the food . Not a very inspired menu. I had the steak Hache and frites. The less said about that the better. My husband liked his filet of sole ok. We shared a very small Caesar salad and it was the best thing I ate. The martini was very good and I got a lovely glass of wine. We wanted dessert but I couldn't take the noise so we left. The wait staff was very good - no complaints there. I'd say, go for an early cocktail if you're nearby. And, if you don't mind screaming to others at your table, you might like it.

My boyfriend and I decided to try this place for Valentine's Day because I love the live music. Even with a fixed menu, everything was fabulous and full of flavor. The drinks were strong, and the servers gave great recommendations throughout the night. The staff was attentive to every table, making the experience feel very well taken care of. The caviar, steak, and bananas foster were all divine. The atmosphere is my favorite, I love the dark, elegant, and fancy vibe. The ambiance really stands out with its dim lighting, vintage supper club feel, and live jazz playing throughout the evening, which makes the whole experience feel romantic and timeless. Overall, it was an amazing experience for $125 per person.

Came across this place while trying to find a reservation for a Saturday night while in down. So made a reservation and headed over. BIX is down a little alley type street, and may not seem like much from the outside, but stepping inside takes you back to a time of elegance. We were seated once all of our party was present and immediately ordered cocktails. Drinks were pretty good, can't complain about them, each distinct with a good balance of flavor and spirit. For appetizers, we started with the potato pillows with caviar and bone marrow. The potato pillows were just that, deep fried potato, crispy on the outside, crispy on the inside, soft on the inside, with creme fraiche and caviar. Just a little but it goodness, though the caviar really didn't stand out as I thought it would. The bone marrow was ample in size and portion with your standard bread and a little salad with vinaigrette to cut the richness of the marrow. Another great appetizer. Entrees, the chicken hash was recommended as it had been in the menu for over 20 years. It came on a bed of craved leeks and chanterelles. Overall, a very underwhelming dish with two coffee patties, breaded and fried. A little dry on the inside. Was just hoping for something more for a dish that had been on the menu for so long. The lobster spaghetti also felt like a little of a let down, thought it had a nice amount of lobster meat, as well as a little heat from the calabrian chili sofrito. Overall, just felt it needed some other flavor profiles to pull it all together. The steak hache could be described as a hamburger patty with pepper covered in a sauce. Had a nice flavor to the sauce but what sitting you would run back for. And the pork chop was actually a decent dish with glazed apples on top and fennel cream. Overall, cocktails were tasty and the bone marrow was great. Entrees left a lot to be desired for our table, though the pork chop was decent. Maybe stop by for a drink at the bar and some appetizers before getting your night started.

We came for our wedding anniversary. We sat at the bar as our table was being prepared, as we arrived early for our reservation. The cocktails were good and strong. Once our table was ready, we were seated, and they had written us a nice little note. We ordered a few plates, and our waiter asked if we were sharing; they ended up splitting the portions for us. I think my favorite dish was the pork chop; it was perfectly cooked and incredibly juicy. Honestly, we may have overdone it with the food. We also got the Coffee Creme Brulee and Gold St. Foster. It was a good night with good music and good food; we'll be back.

Wow--this place is the definition of effortlessly classy. Beautiful plates of carefully crafted dishes are accompanied by impeccable service and live jazz music. The vibe is old fashioned but timeless, and the dimly lit space immediately creates an intimate atmosphere. I ordered the local petrale sole meunière. The delicate, flaky white fish paired perfectly with the simple yet rich brown butter sauce. The pearl onion confit and potatoes were equally impressive--I only wished there had been a few more. My boyfriend ordered the steak haché, served in a creamy au poivre sauce with a generous side of frites. The bread roll arrived perfectly warm and fluffy, and the appetizer sampler was a perfect choice for first timers. The potato pillow and deviled egg were little bites of heaven, though I must say they were a bit stingy on the caviar. I loved the live piano jazz--it sounded like improv at times, charming in a way like a single thought can go on and on. Definitely make a reservation, as this place fills up quickly after dark. I would highly recommend for anniversaries!

My boyfriend and I were celebrating our 5 year anniversary and we found Bix on lists of cute and romantic restaurants. Bro no new to the Bay Area we gave it a shot. First the alley leading to the restaurant was very cute and set the vibe. The restaurant itself was really pretty. Classic and totally gave a speak easy vibe. Everything we ate was delicious! My two favorite items were the Jamon Croquets and the Market Salad. Amazing!! The Jamon croquet was my favorite bite of the night. My entree was the Chicken Hash, it was something I had never had before but it was really really good. My boyfriend had the Sol and said it was good. The chocolate bread pudding was good, but to be completely honest, I've had better. Our waiter was great , staggered the food perfectly and was very attentive. The restaurant gave us a little anniversary card which was a sweet touch.

We made a reservation on Friday night for my husband's birthday. We arrived 30 minutes early because we were concerned about parking. Parking is primarily on the street, but there's a convenient paid public lot on Sansome Street, just a short walk from the restaurant. The ambiance inside is wonderful--you can hear the piano playing and admire the beautiful artwork on the walls. Both the service and the food were excellent! We especially loved that the restaurant features live piano music, and around 8:30 p.m., they transition to live jazz, which really added to the experience. Although the prices are on the higher side, this is a fantastic spot to enjoy great food accompanied by great music.

Went to Bix earlier this weekend for my birthday and really enjoyed my time there. It's a super cool two-story restaurant with live jazz music, great service, and really good American-French fusion food. To start off, we ordered the appetizer sampler, which included three of their top selling appetizers - deviled eggs were our personal favorite. Highlight of the meal was by far the entrees. I ordered the steak, which comes on a bed of some of the best cream corn I've had in my life. Lobster spaghetti was also a really good, lighter alternative. Overall really enjoyed my time here. Would come again for another special occasion.

Wow. Amazing meal at Bix. Cool location in the middle of everything and not at all in the sticks. Wonderful service that one would expect from a pre fixe. I loved my vegetable pasta dish based on the lobster spaghetti but minus the meat so you get the gist. The trio of appetizers was also a highlight - I'm still dreaming of the potato pillows, deviled eggs and mini grilled cheese sandwiches (of which I think my fave was shockingly the grilled cheese). Cocktails all had an interesting twist too. Great meal in a fun spot. Loved it.

For a party of 30 to celebrate a milestone birthday on a Saturday night can we place the group in the mezzanine and still receive great service?

    Not easily

Is it possible to have small plates and wine at the bar, as opposed to a full dinner?

Absolutely. The full dinner menu is available at the bar. Always first come, first served.

There are some bistro tables outside in pictures. Is outdoor dining available?

While we do have tables outside, we do not offer full service in the alley.

Are kids allowed? One diner said should be fine. Another has never seen kids inside. Thank you.

    yes- kids are welcome

Can I reserve bar seats to enjoy a couple drinks and good music on a Saturday night? Or is it just walk-in?

Though the bar is always first come, first served, we hope to see you on Saturday!

    Are children allowed?

Been here twice for dinner with my child. 6yo and then at 8yo. Should be fine as long as your children are entertained. In our case, pencil and small pad of paper

    Is there dress code?

Not sure if they have anything written down but I definitely dress business casual or nicer… it’s a classy joint! Hint- request table 37 for a party of two :)

    Can you bring a dog?

    Definitely NOT

Can we still listen to the live music if we get outdoor sitting? Thank you

You may be able to hear it- but it will be muffled.

    Do you have valet parking?

Not at the moment, though we hope to offer valet again in the near future.

I'd like to know what day and time that there is a jazz playing ? ?thank you!

    Are there vegetarian options?

Yes, they have vegetarian entrees that aren't listed on the menu. Last time I was there it was a pasta.

Is this more of a restaurant or could myself and my boyfriend stop by for a drink to listen to the music?

As we are primarily a restaurant, all tables are reserved for full dinner service. You are more than welcome to come in to the bar for a drink and listen to the music. Hope to see you in for a pop soon.

Is there a corkage fee here at bix if so how much?

$30 per bottle. 2 bottle limit

What time does the live music start on Saturday night?

There is a solo piano player from 6:00-8:00 pm, and a trio beginning at 8:30 pm.

What is it like on a Sunday evening? They're closed to the public on a Saturday that I wanted to visit. Just thinking the atmosphere or ambience may not be the same. Has anyone been in on a Sunday evening?

It will be more casual since the work and holiday crowd won't be there, but it will also be easier to get a seat, I recommend reservations. You'll have a more authentic experience with locals being there and I recommend sitting at the bar unless… Read more

Is the only access to the 2nd level the stairs? If we can't do stairs do I need to request 1st floor on my reservation?

I'm not sure, but I believe the only access to the second level is a via the steps. If you can't try to request a table near the piano bar on the first level. It was so awesome

Is there live jazz on sat evening?

We have live Jazz every night!

    Can you wear jeans?

Marguerite, these people have zero idea what they're talking about. This is San Francisco, not New York. Of course don't go in there wearing old/baggy looking jeans with holes. However, nice jeans accompanied by other nice clothing is completely… Read more

There was a cup flipping event which was super fun to spectate, along side the rotating pictures of the bar's beloved pooches . We ordered 2 western burgers, 12 count bone-in wings (half bbq, half Hawaiian), and an appetizer of corn dogs, tater tots, bacon Mac & cheese bites, and mozzarella sticks. Later we also added boneless buffalo wings which were so tangy, well-seasoned, and HOT. The western bacon burgers were so delicious, crispy bacon, crispy onion rings, and some bomb.com bbq sauce. The wings were drowned in sauce (just how we like them) , the bbq was to die for and the Hawaiian had the perfect little kick of spice for our picky eaters. The appetizer platter was also fried to perfection, with the perfect crunch on the tater tots & corn dogs. The Mac & cheese bites & mozzarella sticks were perfectly cheesed, with an amazing cheese pull on the mozzarella sticks. Along with the food, my boyfriend and I ordered some drinks. I got a margarita and he got a Guinness. Both drinks were good, very standard and well served. The couple behind the bar were very funny and super kind to us being dazed after all the walking. It's the kind of place where every detail feels intentional, from the curated cocktail list to the smooth jazz humming in the background. But what truly made the night stand out was Adam. He was an absolutely attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. Whether it was recommending the perfect bourbon or just checking in with genuine care, Adam made us feel like VIPs without ever being over the top. You can tell he takes pride in creating a memorable experience. The drinks were expertly crafted (the smoked old fashioned was a standout and don't forget the espresso martini), and the small plates were just as impressive elevated comfort food with a creative twist. If you're looking for a place to unwind, a date, or just treat yourself to a night of great service and even better cocktails, The Boardroom delivers. And if you're lucky enough to be served by Adam, you're in for a five-star experience.

Located in North…read moreBeach area with the entrance hiding in a small alley, the restaurant is bigger than we thought with both indoors & outdoors seating. The outdoor patio is definitely a blast for a summer day in SF, also converting to a free Tango class at 6:30 on Wednesday evening. We started with some special drinks as recommended by Ali, the most generous guy you've ever met. We got Japanese Artisan Gin Pomegranate Mint Martini and AB's Espresso Martini. They were so refreshing after we had to walk on some hills in 80degree weather in SF. After that, the appetizers we ordered came out with Caprese Salad & Mahmoud's Delicious Pork Ribs. The portion was huge for just appetizer. It's been a while for me to have that crispy baguette toasted with olive oil & vinegar, nothing could be better than that. The ribs were tender, the bonus point was definitely the sauce as it wasn't too sweet like the other places. You can't miss pizza in an Italian restaurant, so we ordered my favorite Crispy Prosciutto De Parma, Poached Pear. Prosciutto is my love so I'll just order it wherever I go if they have it on the menu. Super crispy, even though it's not as thin as I expected, I'd still order it again when we come back. It's served with a bowl of cheese powder and chili flakes so you can customize your pizza. The main entrees were definitely pasta and we just had our eyes bigger than our stomach. If you don't know what to order, ask Ali and he'll be more than happy to help you with all the recommendations, and even offer some alternatives for your pasta when the restaurant is not too crowded. My favorite was Pasta Dellacasa with Prawns added, mixing of all the sauces they have. It was so rich and I felt like no other pasta we had can be compared. They serve it hot and you can ask for as much cheese as you want for your pasta because they make it at the table for you. The place was really cool since the building was built over 100 years ago. Even the trees we were sitting next to are over 100 years old, which is pretty cool. You can even find the menu when the original place just opened, with pasta price ranged from $2-3.

Pulled up and saw the Valet($18) sign. We know parking it hard to find in that area so we just parked. The sign is for American Bites and the restaurant next to it. Walked in which is totally hidden. I would have never known it was there. We are greater instantly and told to choose any seat. They have indoor and outdoor dining. We chose indoor. Looked over the menu and order a Tequila Sunrise with Don Julio Anejo. Quite tasty Went for the clam chowder appetizer... definitely 5 stars. Flavorful and creamy. I would come back just for that. Daughter ordered the Seafood Linguini with a cream sauce. The waiter kinda questioned it but made it anyway.. They added Parmesan cheese and cracked black pepper at the table. Everything came with a nice crusty bread I order the Ciopinno!! It was one of the best I ever had.. Added Parmesan and cracked pepper of course. Everything was 5star including the service we received. Left there and recommended the place to several friends.. I'll be back soon.

For drinks, they offer a wide variety of cocktails, beers and even mocktails. I decided to go with a mimosa and it was honestly one of the best I've had in a while. You can tell they use fresh orange juice because the flavor was perfectly balanced, not too sweet and not too acidic. Food wise, I ordered the Spanish Burger and it did not disappoint. The burger was fresh, flavorful and clearly made with quality ingredients. It paired perfectly with the crispy fries. The staff were attentive, friendly and service was quick, which made the whole brunch experience even better. Overall, this is a great spot for brunch whether you're a local or visiting the city. I'll definitely be coming back.

Really feels like a hit or miss on the food…read more I have been to Red Window before, at the recommendation of friends, and was surprised to be disappointed by the all the food which came to my table when I dined here before. However, this time I went again with a friend who assured me the food is fantastic and I was a little bit skeptical but it turned out a bit better this time. We ordered a medley of food: the patatas bravas, the flatbread, the albodigas, the crispy paella balls and the crispy cauliflower. I was especially excited for the patatas bravas as I had tasted them before. They were the highlight of my previous time I had dined here. This time was no exception. Exceptionally crispy flaky and fantastic texture with the multiple layers. The crispy paella balls were also excellent, Very flavorful and what a nice slight crunch to their exterior. Unfortunately I was half disappointed by the rest of the food we ordered The flatbread was just alright, and I regretted we didn't do at least one of the add-ons for it as that likely would have improved it a lot. The albondigas were a lot to get through and I'm glad we were sharing the dish. They went well when paired with the other dishes as it was very one-note with getting through each of the meatballs. The crispy cauliflower had good flavor, but surprisingly were far more mushy than crispy. Red Window has a really nice spot on Columbus, great vibe and friendly staff each time I've visited. They have both interior and heated parklet /outdoor seating. However, the food really feels like there's a only a few standouts on the menu and the rest aren't really bringing more to the table. Peek at other reviews before you go to get an idea of the hits on the menu.

While we were outside, we made friendly conversation with a bartender. I overheard another bartender come out for a cigarette and call him by name, so I jokingly used his name while asking if we could come in. At that point, the bartender became extremely aggressive, got in my face, and said, "Say his name one more f*cking time," repeatedly. I was genuinely confused and asked what she meant. Shortly after, a friend who was already inside came out simply to check on us and see why we were still outside. The bartender then told her to "get the f*ck out of my face" and instructed staff not to let her or us in, even though my friend hadn't done anything wrong. It was so confusing and extremely inappropriate. The behavior was unnecessarily hostile and disrespectful. This bar does not treat its customers with basic courtesy, and that bartender showed zero professionalism or customer service skills.

When it did, though, the cheeseburger tasted great. I can't really find anything I would say needs improvement; it's a solid cheeseburger. Service was pretty serviceable. I had my order taken within a minute, but it did take around while to actually get my food. It was high volume when I ordered, so that contributed to the slower delivery. The actual place is your standard SF hole-in-the-wall eatery. It's very cramped, especially in comparison to other SF eateries. The place gives off very retro vibes (in a way that makes it feel in tune with SF). Overall, very solid spot.
