Last night, I brought my coworkers to North Beach Restaurant for our team holiday dinner, and we had such a wonderful experience. The host, hostess, and our server, Aldo, were exceptional. The entire staff was incredibly accommodating and attentive throughout the evening. The restaurant has a charming blend of traditional and modern--bright, cozy, and intimate all at once. The appetizers and salads were absolutely delicious; the meatballs and arancini were my personal favorites! I had the tagliatelle bolognese, which was rich and flavorful without being too heavy. And the tiramisu? So fresh and perfectly light. Everything was fantastic, and the highlight of the night was unexpectedly running into Mayor Willie Brown! A memorable experience all around. Highly recommend!

We had such an enjoyable experience at North Beach Restaurant. We decided to try a mixture of several dishes across their menu, and everything that came out was fantastic. From starters to mains, each plate had rich flavors, fresh ingredients, and that classic Italian comfort you hope for in North Beach. The atmosphere felt warm and inviting, and the service team took great care of us throughout the meal. You can tell this place has history and pride in what they serve. If you want a true North Beach dining experience with consistently delicious food, this restaurant is an easy recommendation. We left full, happy, and excited to return.

Pera & Gorgonzola salad

Tucked away on one of San Francisco's busiest streets, North Beach Restaurant is a wonderful Italian restaurant worth visiting. One of the first things I appreciated was their valet parking--an absolute lifesaver in an area where finding a spot can feel impossible. We started with the burrata, which was fresh and paired perfectly with juicy cherry tomatoes. My father-in-law really enjoyed the Prosciutto e Melone, though I skipped that one since I'm not a fan. I did love both the Pera & Gorgonzola salad and the Watermelon Salad, which were refreshing and balanced. The star of the night, though, was the Manzo al Chianti. The braised beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender and full of rich flavor, complemented beautifully by the creamy polenta. Honestly, it was one of the best dishes I've had in a long time and an absolute must-try! I also sampled the Tagliatelle Bolognese, which was tasty but a little too heavy for me (and my mother-in-law felt the same). Still, the overall experience was wonderful--we left completely satisfied and more than full.

Saturday night last min reservation, SO glad I found this place. What a GEM! Beautiful date night ambiance. We requested to be seated away from the front door, in a small booth and boy did they deliver ( totally made our night). Must have: Veal Shank! Everything else was also delicious but the veal was 100% the highlight. Great, attentive service as well. Thank YOU for giving us a beautiful night.

First time her. Enjoyable ambiance with live singing and music. Service was attentive and nice. And the food was delicious. I got the eggplant Parmesan while others in my party got pesto gnocchi and other amazing looking dishes. Will be back here for sure to this North Beach restaurant!

Public television can be a great reminder. In the Bay Area, especially when it comes to food. A popular public television program, celebrating its 20th anniversary and featuring this restaurant on its opening episode, brought me here. A familiar local celebrity chose this as his pick of the many SF restaurants as his spot. Coming on a early afternoon in November after completing some errands, I waited at the host stand when a young lady offered me a choice of tables in the main dining room. I picked one in the middle area aside from the walkway to another dining room and was quickly given a menu. A short time later, my waiter came and took my drink order while I asked about some of the menu items. A short time later, he took my meal order while another staff member brought me a plate of bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil mix (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=W5Y9DN4_52xJPYi4ewuzOw). A short time later, my glass of iced tea (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=ZHhhxdyUBuSAgob4eeyzQg) arrived. It is not sweetened, just the way I like it, though it had a tropical fruity flavor. I started with the Caesar salad (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=KVdrsZU40-FS-g8-t2YTbQ), chopped romaine, shaved Grana Padano, anchovies, crispy garlic, Caesar dressing; this was generously plated and there is no shortage of flavor from the salad dressing to the anchovies and cheese forward topping. I liked that the romaine were crisp and crunchy. As recommended by my waiter, I tried the Pasta Della Casa (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=OcUThUADNufPjYido4uSyw), rigatoni, veal, prosciutto, mushroom, white wine sauce; on that TV episode, it was shared that this is one of their signature dishes from the previous business owner hence there is a notation of (Honorary) next to the dish name. I enjoyed this (you always have me when mushroom is an ingredient) as the rigatoni was al dente while the white wine sauce was lightly creamy and didn't overwhelm the other ingredients. The salad was very filling and I held back a little by only having one slice of bread. I brought more than half of the pasta and the remaining bread home for a future dinner. The dining room only had one other table of customers (2) when I arrived as a few more parties came in as I was finishing my meal. Big thanks to John W. who waited on me and packed my unfinished food. I look forward to returning and trying other menu items, perhaps the lasagna or the Bolognese next time. The prices are a bit higher than most casual restaurants in the neighborhood but the atmosphere definitely gives you a nostalgic feel of North Beach.

Gnocchi

This place was reopened recently and it was really good. Highly recommend to check out. The vibe is great and the service is on point. The place is super clean and nicely designed. It kind of felt like a place for special occasions. We had the rigatoni with mushrooms, gnocchi with truffles, and beef shank with risotto. Everything was very very delicious. The rigatoni was cooked just right and filled really well, the gnocchi was super tasty, and the beef shank was so tender it just melted in your mouth. For dessert, I got the tiramisu. It came with strawberries and a bit of chocolate on top. Pretty good way to end the meal.

My family has been going to North Beach Restaurant for years since I was young because we loved it but recently the food quality is just okay. It's not bad but it's also not so good that I want to go back like we used to feel. However, the service is phenomenal and I have so much respect for them. They're always friendly, quick to serve, and if the kitchen is backed up they're transparent and let us know that the food might be coming out a bit late. Ambiance inside is also great -- very clean and polished.

My family and I went here to celebrate my poppa's 90th birthday. We had 20 people for this event. Anastasia, the manager did an amazing job helping me plan the birthday party. The food and wine were delicious. We loved the space as well. Having a room just to ourselves was a plus. We would definitely comeback here for another meal. Unfortunately, we didn't take a lot of pictures of food but that shows how much fun we had. Thank you.

While we were outside, we made friendly conversation with a bartender. I overheard another bartender come out for a cigarette and call him by name, so I jokingly used his name while asking if we could come in. At that point, the bartender became extremely aggressive, got in my face, and said, "Say his name one more f*cking time," repeatedly. I was genuinely confused and asked what she meant. Shortly after, a friend who was already inside came out simply to check on us and see why we were still outside. The bartender then told her to "get the f*ck out of my face" and instructed staff not to let her or us in, even though my friend hadn't done anything wrong. It was so confusing and extremely inappropriate. The behavior was unnecessarily hostile and disrespectful. This bar does not treat its customers with basic courtesy, and that bartender showed zero professionalism or customer service skills.

I first walked through its…read moredoors in the late 1990s after moving to San Francisco, but the bar itself dates back to 1933, opening right as Prohibition was ending. It was founded by Anton "Tony" Nikitovich and quickly became a gathering place for the neighborhood's Italian and Croatian communities, where people came to swap stories, argue politics, and enjoy a stiff drink after a long day. And honestly, that tradition carried on well into the years when many of us became regulars. I hadn't been back for a few years until recently, when I decided to stop in again. The bar wasn't overly busy, but a handful of neighborhood folks were sitting at the counter, trading stories over their drinks. It felt instantly familiar. Not much has changed since the early 2000s when I used to come here regularly, and that's exactly what makes Tony Nik's special. Step inside, and it still feels like a mid-century film set: tufted leather seating, a long wooden bar that's seen nearly a century of San Francisco history, and that iconic neon sign glowing outside. While much of the city has reinvented itself again and again, Tony Nik's somehow held onto its soul. It's a grown-up bar without being stuffy, no loud club music, no trendy gimmicks, just well-made cocktails, a classic jukebox, and an atmosphere that feels earned rather than manufactured. The bar stayed in the Nikitovich family for decades, and the current owners were wise enough to preserve both the name and the vintage character Tony originally created. It's one of those rare places that reminds you what North Beach used to be, and, thankfully, still is.
