This place has a great relaxing old school lounge vibe. We sat on the second floor in the back in a big booth. Live piano music was playing for most of the night and it was perfect background ambiance. We were 6 and able to talk, catch up and have a great time. Service was pretty attentive, except they did take away my half eaten piece of bread without me seeing and I wasn't done with it. We ordered a variety of appetizers. There wasn't one that blew me away. The bread was just average too. The crab on top of the toast was good but it's not worth the price. The deviled eggs were pretty good. If I were to get an appetizer again I would get that. They also can match the serving size of the appetizer to how many people are in your party. My entree was amazing. The snapper was meaty and delicious. I could eat the skin too because it was crunchy. The greens with it were a nice touch. It was very big and filling. Expensive at $55. I tried my friend's truffle burger and that was delicious too. That was a huge meal and I think $36. The truffle wasn't overpowering and the rye bread added a good heartiness to it. I tried the sole also but it didn't compare to my snapper, the flavor of the snapper was more mild, like chicken and just meatier and better. But I think that's just because I prefer Snapper. We got a bunch of desserts. The bread pudding tasted more like a dense rich brownie. It had whipped cream on top but really needed ice cream. The best dessert was the panna cotta, it had more complex flavors to it. It was very delicate and the texture was spot on. I got the pisco punch to drink, and it was sour and sweet. It didn't say what was in it except that it had tears of cherubs or something like that. So I mean I had to get it. There is an extra San Francisco fee they charged to the bill. While Bix is known for its charm and history, it is no longer the gem it once was. First and foremost, the food is quite average. The presentation, the combination of flavors, the portions were all average. The food doesn't begin to compare to other SF restaurants at the same price point, so very disappointing. In my mind, there is no recovery after a disappointing dinner. The vibe and live music are nice, but again the volume is quite loud during dinner. If you have a larger party (we had 6), it is difficult hearing from end to end at the table. The noise also made it difficult for our waitress to describe specialty items and answer questions. read more

My friend and I came a few minutes before 11pm to try our luck, and the employees and Bix accommodated us swiftly, efficiently, and with a smile. Our server Jackie was attentive, kind, and gave wine recommendations so persuasively that it made us wanna try every bottle. We came here for a holiday lunch. They don't normally open for lunch so that was a treat. The interior is beautiful and feels like a speakeasy from the past. Luckily, I was able to find street parking half a block away! We began with the steak tartare and deviled eggs. The tartare was mild in flavor and the crunchiness of the toast paired well with the texture of the beef. The deviled eggs were delicious! My friend had the lobster spaghetti, which he really liked. I thought the chicken has was good, but not great. I made sure to save some room for dessert. I ordered the poached pear and my friend ordered the gold street foster. This place! I used to come here back in the 90's when I was in the clothing business. I would eat at nam king and learned about this spot while dining one nite. Love the space and vibe and the cocktails were sublime. One nite I bought this coffee table book there, the giant mural in the room. It pains me to write this review after the many great anniversary and birthday dinners I've had at BIX. This review is solely based on the meal, not the ambiance, which is second to none. I arrived a bit early for my reservation so had a cosmo grey goose at the bar. I admired the murals on the wall and chatter among regulars. I was a bit shocked at the $20 pricetag, as the cocktail was in a small martini glass. But it was good, light pink and fairly strong. On to the meal when my out of town visitor arrived. We asked to sit downstairs, as we knew the jazz started at 7pm (only a pianist that night). We were seated against the back wall at a small two top. We started with the Dungeness crab rolls, four small brioche rolls for $21. They were delish, fresh and buttery, and started the meal off right. We split a bottle of the Craggy NZ Sauv blanc for $42, which was crisp and light. The fish special was a whole snapper (head and all), which we decided to split as I love the opakapaka (pink snapper) in Maui. It was served with broccolini and we also ordered a side of Yukon gold mashed potatoes, which were buttery and creamy (a steal at $12). We split the fish (removing the head) and were left with about four bites each. The problem was that even though we "deboned" the fish on the plate, every bite had a small bone in it. The fish was bland and quite mushy, not firm as expected. At $57, it should not have been practically inedible. Though we twice tried to tell the waiter Jonathan about the issue, he either pretended not to hear and run off, or was not paying attention, as he never came back to check our meal. My dinner guest agreed the meal was "just okay". I'll return in future, but not order the fish. read more

We came here for my husbands birthday around 10pm on a Friday. We both worked until 7pm and we had to drive from San Jose and check into a hotel.. any how when we showed up the manager was standing outside and told us that it was very weird that we would bring a baby with us to the restaurant (he also said it with a lot of attitude). We were both taken back and my husband wanted to leave, but we decided to stay as we didn't want to take our daughter to a different spot at that time. We don't ever take our daughter out this late, but since it was my husbands bday weekend, we decided to bring her with us to SF rather than leaving her home with someone else.. as a manager I cant understand how you would ever be rude to anyone coming in to your restaurant, let alone someone for just having a child. read more

It wouldn't surprise me if Bix soon announces a mandatory 30% gratuity for all parties of 2 or more! I've been coming to Bix for about 25 years now. Probably been 10-15 times over the years. The other night will be my last time unfortunately. They now have a 6.5% surcharge on all food & drink to "satisfy government employer mandates". This is on top of the standard San Francisco sales tax. So you end up paying 15%+ of taxes on your dinner. STOP WITH THE SHENANIGANS ALREADY! Just raise your menu prices if you must and pay your employees accordingly. The food & drinks are good, and the ambiance is fantastic. But this ridiculousness charging an additional 6.5% has to stop. We go out all over the place, both in San Francisco & other big cities. And I've never seen a charge of this magnitude. I won't be back. read more

TLDR: It's a nice, "classic American"-feeling spot, hidden in a side street off Columbus. Come here if you want live music while you dine and great warm bread to start your meal, but I do think Bix is pricier than what it's worth. It's 4 super buttery and perfectly crispy toasted brioche pieces topped with a generous dollop of Dungeness crab in some creamy mayo sauce and finished with chives. 2. Bread Course (5/5) - The bread came out piping hot (can't tell if freshly made or reheated, but either way it was delightful). You also get unlimited little pots of upscale "Chex Mix" which was a more unique complementary addition to the meal 3. Seared Duck Breast (4/5) - I love duck and while the pistachio element was actually a fantastic addition to this dish, the duck itself was a bit too salty for me. Otherwise, this would have been a very nice entree. 4. Steak (3.5/5) - Sorry, forget exactly what this dish was, but it was some kind of steak on top of a bed of mashed potatoes. While the restaurant was nice enough to be able to replace the potatoes with more veggies for us, the entire dish was comically small. Anyone with a larger appetite would not be happy, and it didn't taste like anything special to compensate... 5. Classic Shrimp Cocktail (3.5/5) - I mean it tastes good and the shrimp are big, but it's 4 shrimp for $20. We wouldn't order again. ------ SERVICE: * We came here on a busy night and thankfully got the last seats at the bar. Despite being at the bar, I thought the service we received was great * Food can out relatively quickly and we were in and out in an hour to an hour and a half (and I'm a slow eater!) * When we ask for the rare food substitutions in dishes, some restaurants are much better at accommodating than others. This was one that made it painless to ask, and they were so nice about being happy to help. ------ ENVIRONMENT: * It's a nice vibe! There was live jazz playing while we had dinner which is a rare sight in SF. That being said, for the price we pay here, food and service didn't live up to the high rating. I made a reservation way ahead of time of a family member's birthday requesting booth seats. When we arrived, they put up in a corner tiny table that's right outside the door to the kitchen. No cool. Then the food we ordered was very underwhelming. Bix is a sf classic that has stood the test of time. We came a Saturday night dinner with a reservation and requested the top balcony table. Our table wasn't quite ready yet so we grabbed a drink at the bar. I have to say my drink was good but the bar snacks were SO GOOD!!! I think I had 2 refills on mine. For started with the marrow bones and the mussels with French fries. They give hefty portions of bone marrow and it came out very nicely presented. Very good! The steamed mussels were also perfectly done and the fries were probably a top 3 fry for me. For my main I ordered the chicken hash. This was a mistake on my part. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but it was finely cubed chicken breast and potatoes then breaded and fried. It felt a bit like school lunch to me. The ingredients felt like dog food. This was a big mistake. My sister enjoyed her duck and my dad liked his Dover sole. The sides we ordered were exceptionally done! The mashed potatoes were creamy and the carrots were so sweet and delicious. Service was exceptional especially from the bar tenders. Waiter was meh. Overall, there isn't a place like this anywhere else in sf. The vibes were spectacular and the food was great besides my main. I am somewhat of a restaurateur and have been to many restaurants all around the world. There are plenty of food ratings for them, BUT where they really glow, is the staff. We we're greeted by several very kind people who got us to our table very quickly. The food in the drinks were wonderful.As you would expect. But the weight staff was unbelievable. They attended to you. I feel like you were the ultra. Rich and there wasn't a time I ever felt I wasn't attended to in the whole time I was there. These people were both kind generous, and very hard working! I observed them for some time and they had a routine. Each one of them would come through with a chore, and each one would perform that chore to perfection, and then the next one would come in and perform their chore with perfection and so on and so forth. I also observed the manager walking the floor very inconspicuously. Standing in quiet corners and just observing every guest and ensuring that every guest is enjoying themselves. He did this both for the downstairs and the upstairs. I also saw him go back, possibly into the kitchen. I don't know, but I'm sure he was checking things there. And I watched him observe the bar which was packed, but very organized. I can't say enough things for this restaurant, they could dress up the outside. Because when you first walk up, you expect it to be more of a dive, but when you get inside, you realize this is no dive, this is a very ritzy restaurant.It's beautiful inside and you're waited on as though you're rich! Don't miss this place if you walk up and it looks packed, go in. I was turned off at first by the packed people out front, but when I got in, I got seated right away. Just go!! One flaw but I also kinda love it is that you may be seated very close to other parties and get to hear the guy next to you try to show off to his lady that he knows his wines and guesses the wrong one out of only 2 options. omg such a cute date night spot w live jazz every night, the most friendly and knowledgable server and amazing food. crab croquettes had a generous amount of crab and were spicy and yummy. potato pillows were crunchy but soft. i wish i tasted the caviar and creme fraiche more but was still great. sole was cooked perfectly and the sauce was decadent and yummy. sauce on the steak was incredible i loved the carrots it was served with. steak was cooked well but was a little tough for wagyu. brussels were not great too salty and not much flavor otherwise. chocolate bread pudding was like a warm gooey brownie. i wish it was served w ice cream instead of whipped cream but it was delicious despite not having the texture of a bread pudding (more of a fudgey mousse). but loved will be back read more

Came to celebrate a birthday dinner with a group of friends. Made a reservation beforehand. The ambience of the restaurant is very nice. We sat in the upstairs balcony, which is extremely beautiful and were excited for the experience. Everyone ordered an appetizer and entrée and while the appetizers were amazing the entrées were pretty lackluster. The entrées that we had for selection sounded a lot more enticing than they actually were. We did not enjoy the service. Our waiter seem to be very pushy and didn't want to give us proper time to sit and eat and chat with each other despite having one of the last reservations prior to closing (so it's not like there were other reservations after us that the table would be needed for). At the end of the night we tipped generously for our experience. Before walking out, our waiter came out telling us that we needed to tip more because she had to pay out additional staff. We ended up tipping additional amount just to avoid conflict, but definitely left a sour taste in our mouth. Definitely would never be back. That was just extremely unprofessional in our opinion. While I believe an experience and ambiance can save a restaurant when the food is more lackluster, for us the food and the experience were poor quality so I just can't justify going back. read more

What a great atmosphere for a nice dinner. Soft jazz of different types depending on the day of the week. Upscale but didn't feel stuffy. Go for a classic martini and they'll shake it table side. Arrived about 20 mins early before our reservation time on a Thursday without the full party being present yet, and we were still able to get seated right away. The staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive. Really romantic ambiance and love that they have live music every night. We got the steak tartare and hamachi crudo to get things started, and both were a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The American wagyu steak was cooked to perfection (ordered rare). The seared duck breast was tender and had a good layer of fat around it that added to the flavors. Halibut and the truffle burger were pretty standard, but still tasty. For dessert, I thought it was a little pricey for a few balls of ice with the sorbet, although the flavors (kiwi and orange) were refreshing and it's made in house. My 8:30 dinner at Bix last night was a lesson in what's possible for a restaurant. I understand that restaurants are businesses but your dollar seems to go further at Bix. My friend arrived before me and enjoyed a cocktail at the bar. She was pleasantly surprised with the quality of her $18 drink. When I arrived we were immediately seated in an upstairs booth. I ordered a nonalcoholic cocktail based on her recommendation. My drink was $14 and I enjoyed it. It was a unique mocktail mostly because it was complex and not sweet. The restaurant is hidden in an alley. You almost have to be looking for it or you might never know it exists. Inside I felt transported back in time. The decor was dark. The staff was classically dressed. The tables all had white table cloths. There was an excellent three piece band playing jazz standards. The music added so much life to the meal. I would go back for the band alone. I was already impressed and hadn't tasted a thing on the menu. I wasn't disappointed. We shared a steak that was off-menu with a variety of appetizers and sides. Everything was served at the correct temperature and was fresh. I had never had olives served warm before and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I know I haven't talked about the food a lot but I assure you that I enjoyed every bite. Bix made me realize that it's still possible to have nice decor, professional staffing, excellent food and a live band at a reasonable price. By the way, real Estate isn't cheap in San Francisco and neither is labor. The restaurant competition is fierce. The existence of Bix and their longstanding success only makes me think that most restaurants are either poorly managed or have extremely greedy owners. Go to Bix. Enjoy it and take it all in.
