Killing some time before dinner, stopped in for Happy hour at this supposedly legendary place. From ths outside, it didnt look like much, in fact it had Dive written all over it. I was pleasantly suprised walking in, as I was greeted with a Warm, cozy rusticly decorated place full of charm . Immediately through the door to the right was a hof-brau manned by a gentleman ready to serve up whatever culinary delight you wanted to try. The place was peppered with tables, occupied by what appeared to be a heavy presence of regulars. Took a spot at the bar, and ordered a beer and a shot while my sister got a manhatten. Prices for happy hour were well within reason and the pour for the bourbon was quite generous. The barkeep was gregarious and engaging . I want to go back for sure and try the hof-brau. A San Francisco classic! Had the pleasure to be in the neighborhood looking for a bite, and got quick nods of agreement when I suggested we hit Tommy's Joynt! I've been coming here for over 30 years, but I know this place has probably been there for at least that long before I made my way through its doors! We all ordered slim plates, which is a nice option, as the provide lighter meals for a lower price. For $14.50 I got Prime Rib (I think they call it round steak), mashed potatoes, a salad, a roll, and a side of beans. They offer a wide range of other options, including rotating nighttly specials. The guys at the counter are awesome, and are eager to serve you up a tasty plate, just how you want it! Everything is perfectly serviceable. Drinks are available on the other side of the room, and they have a great selection of beer and liquor (and I expect wines as well). I had a Ukrainian beer with my steak, and it hit the spot! Service at the bar is also quite good. I didn't have an Irish Coffee, since they didn't have fresh coffee made and we were in a bit of a time crunch, but I recall those being a treat as well. Huge helpings of tasty food at a reasonable price, and service with a smile makes this a heartwarming bit of San Francisco's classic dining. So I have to admit I didn't actually eat the food. My sister-in-law sent me here cause she swears by the brisket and I happen to be working in the city so she asked me to bring her a sandwich home I'm actually a vegetarian. First thing I noticed it kinda has a little dive bar feel which I LOVE! Then I noticed Italian flags I'm like oh yes I love me some Italian food. Then I noticed they have baked potatoes on the menu nobody has baked potatoes on the menu anymore and as a vegetarian it used to be a go to it most restaurants. The workers were super helpful and nice cause I was literally in there not knowing what I was doing getting a sandwich for someone else. Fun late night place to eat after watching a show. However, the neighborhood is so bad! A homeless drug addict chased us out of our parking space around the corner from the restaurant. So we zoomed off and came back around for the parking space. All clear. We parked and cautiously walked to the restaurant. We walked in, oh, its a hofbrau! Never knew that. Every protein was stacked up with so many options. The staff was friendly and took our orders. :) BBQ brisket plate with mash potatoes and coleslaw - mash was wonderful, the brisket was tender but the slaw could had used more sweetness and tang. 4 Stars :) Cornbread plate with mash and slaw. The cornbread was very good. 4 Stars The decor was flea market whacky. Definitely had its own personality in a cool way. Glad I was finally able to try this institution of San Francisco. Tommy's Joint is a San Francisco Institution. When I first moved to SF around 2005 one of my first outings to a restaurant was Tommy's. I had a delicious hot roast beef sandwich covered in gravy. It was one of the most comforting dishes I have ever had. I remember coming to Tommy's many times over the last two decades and trying everything from their oxtail stew to their meatloaf to their lasagna. Everything here is good! On my most recent visit I got to try their lamb shank with boiled potatoes and carrots. The lamb shank perfectly fell off the bone and the fat melted in your mouth. The gravy was very flavorful. The only thing I found underwhelming were the potatoes as they could've cooked a little longer. The service at the counter is always very good and quick! These guys have been working this counter for a long time. The place still feels a little like a dive bar, but that's all part of the charm of this historical eatery. read more

Tommy's Joynt is hands down the best hoftsbrau in San Francisco. Its ample portion lend well to sharing meals, and I only learned about the "Slim Plate" after I ordered but I am definitely getting it next time. For sides, I got a scoop of stuffing (divine and exactly the right amount) and broccoli (okay with a dash of salt and pepper). I asked for beef jus on the broccoli and got turkey with gravy as my main. The turkey was substantial if a little dry. My friend got the lean barbecue brisket with mashed potatoes and broccoli. He's a regular and says order is always solid. I would come again to try the pastrami sandwich. Inside it's a bit like an old timey bar, with picnic cloth tables. There is an extremely large indoor area and tons of old signs and photographs. The there is also free pickles if that's your thing. The guys behind the counter are super nice. read more

This classic cafeteria-style diner is one of a kind. As I walked in, I felt the warmth and spirit of San Francisco locals. I chose the daily special lamb shank but they have a variety of options. This place is amazing! I went for the first time last week before watching Hoppers at Apple cinemas for a beer. We came back after the movie for dinner!! This place is so cool and has so much history within it. I got the brisket plate and I couldn't be more surprised that this corner joint is serving such good food and sandwiches. The staff and regular patrons are super nice and will be quick to start conversation with you. I recommend listening! Tons of SF knowledge to be gained. I'm going to try the buffalo stew next! It's a really good thing those Vuori joggers have an elastic waistband because today, my teen son met his Waterloo. The quality, the quantity, the delectably carved deliciousness of BEEF. Yeah, he opted for "double" meat and he ate all of it including the sides. It easily could have fed a family of 4. Mind you, if you were in the pool 3 hours a day for a swim team, then in the gym lifting weights and on the rowing machine and treadmill you too could eat like this. For the rest of us mortals like me, I had the corned beef and rice, delicious. I didn't care for the stuffing though it's the owner's Turkish recipe. The service was amazing, they offered my son extra food if he wanted it -maybe they were simply amazed- and were all around perfect hosts in this great eatery. Kind of amazing this place is still going strong. It's survived the dot com crash, the Covid crash and changing consumer tastes. It's a Landmark, an Icon, a Stalwart and a decent place to grab some hof brau type grub and a beer or cocktail if you prefer. The decor is rather unique too. You might call it historic chic. Great place to come after a drunken night. We came here recently after a couple bars and man is this place nice. First I live how homey the inside is. If I remember right my friends told me this place has a lot of history. This particular night I ordered the BBQ Sandwich. It was good but I was jealous of my girls Beef Brisket. We shared the $26 Jack Tar Special sampler plate which comes with 2 oz of each meat and 2 sides. The meats were okay. The flavor could have been better. The brisket is very tender. Easy to order at the counter and they cut the meat up for you right then and there. Fairly decent prices but the meat was a little tougher than I would have liked. Tommy's Joint is a SF Institution of sorts, first opened in 1947. The decor shows this. Nostalgic pictures on the walls, smoke stained from a previous era. A dusty fascinating time capsule. The service: Its a Hofbrau. An endangered species . I am pretty sure the guys working there are same guys as 30 years ago. They are not going to charm you. They are also not going to upsell you, so that's good. The Food: Typical hofbrau fare. Turkey, corned beef, pastrami, the usual with all the expected sides. Some unexpected things like buffalo stew. We had the juicy pastrami sandwich with was excellent with the addition of swiss cheese and kraut on rye for a near as possible homage to reuben. This was $28 dressed out although could have made other decisions and got it for $15. The Buffalo Chili was great. Except its cost at $38 bucks was puzzling. My advice: Go in for a sandwich. 4 or 6 oz and you will be full. Keep it simple. They have a great old school bar with tons of local craft beers for $7 and a great irish coffee for $8. We took our trays to the bar and each downed 3 irish coffees. Too easy. read more

It came with my choice of mashed potatoes and gravy ( a lil above fair )and a bowl of baked beans with an obvious amount of huskiness ( tough husk on them beans / hard /great flavor though , slightly smoky . My partner had pastrami ( taste great ) EXCELLENT w/ a three bean salad ( sucked ) all accompanied w/ an average dinner roll . This is a real piece of San Francisco. Tucked away on Van Ness street, is Tommy's Joynt. You order from the carver who hand prepares the sandwiches and plates right in front of you kinda cafeteria style. Alcohol is served across the room from the bar. My recommendation is the hot pastrami dipped, super delicious. Super cool interior, and it takes you back to an old school time. Small world, my friend was just talking about Harry's Hoffbrau and how there isn't one around here anymore but up in the city they have Tommy's joint! Lol it's similar to Harry's Hoff Hoffbrau's set up! When you first walk in, it looks like a typical older tavern style bar, and there are tables that are open as well as a bar along the back wall and off to the right hand side is where you ask the chef what pieces he can cut for you. The menu is all on the wall behind him and you can pick your sides. Prices were pretty cheap considering inflation is ridiculous currently with meat prices. Everything in the economy now, but perhaps they've gone up since then, but I wasn't a patron back then, so I don't know. Hee. Even though it was the end of the evening, the turkey I got was a huge serving, and I got mashed potatoes and coleslaw. The coleslaw was rather sweet to me, so I wish I had some red pepper flakes to spice it up a bit. But next time. Overall, I was incredibly stuffed after my turkey serving and the mashed potatoes with the side. I never ate my roll, but it looked really good!! Tommy's Joynt is an old time SF place that serves great comfort food. My wife and I shared a beef brisket plate with macaroni salad and roll. The brisket has a sweet bbq sauce lightly mixed with it. It was delicious and I wished I grabbed my own plate. The place is old, but reminds me of my younger days in the City. Owners or Service was friendly, polite and old school. This hole in the wall calls you in with the nearest, old school exterior, only to hit you in the face like an antique market treasure trove. They have so many beers to choose from, so don't go in here for your usual, try something international. My brothers and I were craving some good, simple grub, and this place was recommended to us many times. We finally stopped in for the simple food that came with nostalgic cafeteria vibes. Prices were reasonable for most of the menu, and ordering was quite simple. You order at the front near the entrance, pay, then sit at one of the many tables or booths inside. When you're finished, you simply leave the dishes and head out on your way. We tried 4 of their main entree dishes. The portions were quite generous and the food was simple tasty good for the most part. The highlights and my personal favorite would be the sweet and sour pork ribs over rice. The dish was juicy, tender, chunky pieces with a light sweet sauce over a bed of fluffy white rice. The spaghetti with meatballs was also great, with large meatballs in a light, sweet red gravy. I'd probably skip on the corned beef next time, because the portion we got was lean and quite dry. The sauce was good, but didn't do much to revive the corned beef. The entrees all came with a choice of a bread roll or sourdough. We all went with the recommended sourdough but wished we didn't because it was rock hard. The joint inside is quite fun and there is a bar on the other side making it a good spot for drinks as well. The staff inside are friendly and get your order done within minutes. Definitely a good place to get your meat intake in, and they post daily specials on the window. read more

Been here a few times recently and many times from the 90s to the late 2000s. Food is decent and home style. Turkey sloppy Joe was tasty, spaghetti and meatballs were okay. Don't think you'll get al dente pasta here though. Walked by on a recent Sunday saw their $6 Bloody Mary sign on their window. Went inside and the bartender was as enthusiastic as someone trying to get out of jury duty. Served Bloody Marys in a glass meant for Irish Coffees with no garnish. read more

Wasn't that about a decade or so ago? Anyway, we were in The City and wife asked so there you go. A lot of the bric-a-brak and curios was removed with the ownership change. Those quirky things gave this place its charm. These were replaced with gaudy corporate advertisements for watery beer and glowing fluorescent things. Would you like a side of hip hop music with your pastrami? You can get it now. In fact It's force fed to you. Its a new vibe at Tommy's. Looking forward to horseradish with your sandwich? Better call ahead and ask about it. Today they are out. Hey! If any of you Local 2 union members are in charge here! You can Door Dash some without moving a muscle. Take some initiative! The food is still pretty good and they could probably get away with charging more for it since it is San Francisco. My wife uses their Spagetti and meatballs and their pastrami as the gold standard for those items. As its always been, you wait in line to order and be served deli style. In the good old days, wait staff would come to your table and offer to serve you water or drinks. Now it seems you need to go to the bar and get your own drinks. Anything else you might want to know? In San Fran in March we stumble upon this local treasure! I wish we could have had more! We weren't sure what to expect when we ventured in here but it was like a blast from the past. It was very cool, dark and a time capsule. There was a deli table to the right and a bar to the left. It was overstimulating to figure out what to order but we saw them cutting the meat fresh and that made it easy. I got the turkey sandwich and he carved some hot turkey. They ask what size, condiments (mayo, mustard or horseradish). What we didn't get right away is the light brown bbq sauce gravy. It was foodgasm on my turkey with mayo! I am still craving this! My boo got the roast beef and it was so rare... he loved it! The au jous made it! We both were enjoying our sandwiches! We would have gone back if we were closer and there weren't a million other places to go... but we really debated going back to grab another one to bring to the airport! We will be back!!! read more

Of course, the food is a good value at Tommy's Joint. Lots of Yelpers are telling you about their favorite dishes among the many meats. The decor and history hold a place in my heart and lots of others. But no, it's neither chic nor new. To all that I have a particular thing to add. While Tommy's Joint does not have a world-class bar like Tommy's Mexican Restaurant does, it's still easily underrated as a bar. I say it's underrated because their beer is cheap but good. There are lots of $7 and $8 drafts available, including Guinness, in a city where some places aren't embarrassed to charge you almost twice as much. Mostt surprisingly, they still have $5 beers at Tommy's Joint, including Asahi, Tecate and Sapporo. I walked in on a Sunday afternoon, paid $5 for a beer and watched some Sunday afternoon football. It's a legacy spot - with the building dating back to 1880. I remember first visiting Tommy's Joynt back in 2012 and marveling at their late night hours. Today - Tommy's Joynt closes a little earlier than I remember, but they are still a reliable spot to enjoy a generous portion of meat (they're lacking in the vegetarian options)- in the later evening. At Tommy's Joynt, no restaurant reservations are needed. It is a counter service restaurant that is first come - first served. It looks like like I remember it back in 2012 - and I am sure that it also looks very similar to the way it looked many years before that. I love that. I am one who is fairly resistant to change - so a spot like Tommy's Joynt - makes me happy. Especially amongst the ever changing landscape of San Francisco, I attended a low key early-evening gathering here recently. I marveled at the diverse array of customers that popped in and out of Tommy's Joynt. Most of the crowd - seemed to be regulars. They knew the staff. They knew their order well before they went up to the counter to order. They knew Tommy's Joynt and walked in with a smile.
