-25. Beef Bowl
Mel T.

I've gotten food here a few times over the years and I still don't understand the hype over the Mitsuwa food court. I had a beef/rice bowl and hubby had a beef/udon bowl. The beef/rice bowl had very little beef in it and of the beef there was, half of it was fat. The beef/udon bowl was advertised as a dry noodle bowl, but it actually came with broth and a bunch of random soggy tempura flakes on top. Again, the beef situation here was the same as the beef/rice bowl. We really only ate here because it was lunchtime, and this spot had menu items that my toddler would actually eat. But if I had to choose one thing to get for lunch at Mitsuwa, I'd rather just get the bento boxes from the supermarket side. Those are actually pretty decent.

THE GOOD ---------------- + Like any of the Japanese food stalls at Mitsuwa, there are PLENTY of options to choose from. ++++ Menu consist of Japanese rice plates with proteins (e.g., pork cutlet, chicken cutlet, grilled salmon, karaage, etc.), udon with misc. proteins and curry rice plates. + Pork Cutlet Curry was solid. Nothing spectacular, but was still very good. Plenty of curry to mix your large chopped pork cutlet into. It hit the spot and the portion was fair. + Pricing of all of their food is on par with most of the other Mitsuwa vendors, ranging from $9 - $15. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Wish they served ramen too, but I guess they have their own niche and there's enough ramen being served at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = The lines are never super long at this vendor, like Omusubi Gonbei or Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, but the food is just as good.

Thank goodness for Mitsuwa Marketplace and their Japanese food stalls! Wateishoku Kaneda offers comfort food like curry, udon, katsu, and chicken karaage. They also have some specialty items like stuffed buns, corn dogs, and yakitori. The menu is simple with reasonable prices. You can choose from: -curry: rice + your choice of protein + curry -plate set: your choice of protein + rice + miso soup + fries -bowl: your choice of protein + rice -udon: noodles + your choice of toppings You order on the self-service touch screen and wait for your order number to be called. We each got the Pork Cutlet Curry ($13.48) which includes a deep-fried breaded pork cutlet, Japanese curry, sliced hard-boiled egg, and white rice. Service was quick - our food came out in 5 minutes or so. There was a good portion of meat. The pork was tender with a crispy panko-breaded outer texture. It was deep fried to a golden-brown color with a nice crunch! The curry was thick and aromatic with a blend of sweet and savory flavors. Very mild with the spices, so if you're looking for something spicy, this might not be up your alley. I wish they added more curry to mix with the rice. Not the most memorable curry and katsu I've had, but it was still a satisfying meal. I would come back to try their udon bowls next time!

I have been here a few times, always had a solid meal here. My last meal I got was the chicken cutlet curry ($13.31). The chicken was thighs and it was juicy and breading/panko was still crispy even when drenched with curry. The curry was solid and the sliced hard boiled eggs were a nice touch. The food court has plenty of choices and I would recommend this place if you want chicken or pork cutlet.

Wow, I can't believe during all my visits to Mitsuwa I have never tried this place in the food court! I ordered the beef udon that comes with an onsen egg (nikutameten udon) on their touchscreen tablet. I wandered around the food court and supermarket as I waited for my food to be prepared before my number was called. All I can say is wow! The flavor of the soup was so simple but also slightly sweet, I'm not sure what exactly the flavor was but it was so good. One order was definitely filling enough. A few beef slices with lots of grated yam or radish on the side. The udon noodles also tasted quite fresh as it didn't have an alkaline taste to it. My brother got the chicken cutlet curry rice and it was a quite a generous portion. The curry spice tasted just mild to me so not spicy at all. The chicken cutlet was crispy outside and tender on the inside.

I ordered Curry Udon With a pork cutlet and it was $20. Good curry flavor and the udon was perfectly cooked. The pork katsu was crispy on the outside.

Enormous, delicious, and cheap!

Another hit at Mitsuwa--we ordered 2 udon bowls, a beef curry and a nikutamaten. Big bowls with thick delicious noodles on a weekday afternoon with plenty of seating--10/10 quick no-fuss lunch. Make sure to tip the sweet ladies cleaning up around you!

Food was incredibly delicious. Super fast and extremely authentic!! Service was wonderful and I can't wait to go back and try this place again.

It was a cold cloudy day when I had lunch. Was always craving curry udon. I wish they had larger bowl size for more noodle portion. Ordered the beef curry udon noodles soup. Delish as always. I usually go next door to the ramen place to get a spoon of their togarashi spice and add it to the curry udon. It makes it better. I wish they offer it here as well... My husband decided to try the mackerel as it looked great in the display. There was a sign that stated fresh grilled fish can take up to 20min or so- there is a wait but worth it. My husband loved it.

Hair scrambled in the egg.

Discovered a hair IN the scramble egg. Lost appetite and couldn't eat anymore. Worst, no apology and the lady said is not from their kitchen. ‍

Miso Pork Cutlet Plate

Fast service, great tasting food. The Miso Pork Cutlet plate was savory and delicious. We came all the way from DC to partake. Highly recommended!

Located in Mitsuwa marketplace. On weekends, may need to go around multiple times for a parking spot, so better on weekdays. Only one main seating area for the whole food court so a lot of patience needed waiting for a table. We usually pick this place - we like their cheese pork cutlet, mackerel and other plates. It's food-court food but it takes time to get your order (they announce your number; use the time looking for a place to sit); and servings also didn't look like before and not as much like with the sides.

Pork was shredded and a little dry, but the Japanese mayo and other ingredients made it very good. ++++ Green Curry Ramen - EXCELLENT curry flavor, but it wasn't too strong. Ramen was cooked perfectly and plenty of ingredients inside, including 2 slices of cha siu and a half of a soft boiled egg. ++++ Blackbeard Ramen - Also fantastic broth flavor too and same comment as above regarding their ramen. ++++ Kids Tonkotsu Ramen - At just $7, this is a steal for a kids ramen. There was 1 piece of cha siu in it, but it was excellent for a kids bowl. + Food comes out fairly quickly. + Private parking lot, but it was packed on an early Saturday evening. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Service was a little disappointing. ---- One (young) waitress seemed very inpatient and was a bit flustered throughout the evening. Didn't appreciate her lack of cordialness. - Interior is tight. ---- There are only 5 tables in the restaurant and all of them can accommodate 2-4 people, MAX. There is also counter seating too for about 4-5 people. - It was freeezing inside when we came in on a frigid January Saturday evening, so keep your jacket on! MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = We arrived at about 5:45 PM on a January Saturday evening and snagged the last available table. Turnover is relatively quick here though because all people are eating is ramen, but there was a large party of about 8 people waiting a good 15-25 minutes after we were seated.

Strangely enough I missed trying this dish on a trip to Tokyo last year…read more I had it on the list to try but didn't get a chance given all the foodie items I had on my list. While I can't vouch for authenticity but I can vouch for a delicious bite. Sazanami Hamba-Gu is notable for their Japanese Hamburger Steak, which is a hamburger without the bun, a very popular dish in Japan. Their version was served on a platter with rice, vegetables, miso soup, and chawanmushi. The patty itself was very juicy and tender and noted on the menu as a beef and pork combination. I included some addons which made my entree far more pricer. The fried egg was a good call while the double cheese probably wasn't necessary. I got the recommended red wine demi-glacé and another with the soy onion. The red wine was better in my opinion. Also got a tonkatsu to share and while the breading was very good the pork was a little drier than other ones I've had. I'd skip the tonkatsu and stick with the Hambu-gu as that was definitely more notable. Service was friendly but the entree does take time to prepare. I'd say think twice if you are in a hurry.

It was busy but there were a few seats here and there. Service was friendly though on the minimal side - came once to get order and then to take our trays when done. Food itself was good. We ordered hambagu and tonkatsu both of which were cooked well with good texture for the hambagu and good crisp for the pork cutlet. Ambiance is casual - not too big of a spot but didn't feel crowded. It's BYOB and parking can be an adventure on River Road so something to note.
