After a long hike, we sat and ate at Walking Man. Expectations for a brew pub with grub are low with our crew, when it comes to food. However, this was just messed up. Outside of the mediocre fries, we were disappointed. The Thai pizza was cheese, a sprinkle of green onion and cilantro, and a splash of "peanut sauce". The "peanut sauce" (which there was very little of) was basically jiffy mixed with off-the-shelf curry paste. Our kids had a taste of pepperoni pizza. They had a slice each. A slice. Our kids devour food. It speaks volumes that even they were frustrated with the food. The beers were fine, the food was not. When we pass through again we will sip and leave. read more

A perfect day in my world involves a hike in the Columbia Gorge followed by a visit to Walking Man Brewery, the best darn brewpub in the Pacific NW. The beers are amazing. The food is pub fare, but decent pub fare. Love the fries and the spring rolls and the pizza is good. The beer is consistently well crafted. My favorite is the Flip Flop Pils, a summer seasonal. The interior of the pub is small and cozy, possibly the Platonic ideal of a brewpub. (Don't miss the "reader" bathroom with its steampunk sink and collection of quotes on the wall.) The outside courtyard is lovely with simple but effective landscaping that encloses the area nicely. I can't think of any place that I would rather be on a summer evening. read more

I've stopped here before for brews, but this time we added some food to the mix. First off, I think their patio might be one of my favorites in the Gorge. It's below street level, so there's no street noise, surrounded by wildflowers...just a chill place that I could spend hours at. It sounded like there was an accident in the kitchen that closed it up temporarily, so they set up an awesome outdoor grill area where they kept the food train rolling. We had the black bean burger, as well as salmon tacos. Both were amazing! I'd come back for the food alone. The beer at Walking Man is always on point...IPA, Double IPA, Pale Ale...we had it all and wanted more! Great place. Will def be back. read more

If you like beer and live anywhere near Washington, do yourself a favor and get over to Walking Man as soon as you possibly can. How good a brewpub is it? Easily the best in Washington. First off the beers are consistently amazing, and even styles that shouldn't be all that great usually are (Black Cherry Stout for example) and mainstays like Homo-Erectus are among the best I've tasted. The atmosphere of the pub is excellent as it is packed with locals and service is very friendly combining for a laid back easy vibe. I couldn't help but wish I could live down the street and be a regular. I believe there's a word for that and it's called "heaven". Finally the food seemed to be as expertly crafted and thought out as the beer. I didn't expect to find great beer in someplace like Stevenson (no offense to the locals intended) and I definitely didn't expect the pizza to be as delicious as it was. The thin crust was packed with flavor and the toppings of high quality. Ignore the name and RUN over there! read more

Love, love, love this place! Anytime I am in the gorge I try to head this way. There doesn't seem to be any other reason to go to Stevenson so it must be pretty great. They don't make a bad beer. OK, there was some sort of raspberry one that was not good but I stay away from fruit beers anyways. There are plenty of milder beers for those who swing that way but then there are heavy imperial IPA's and oatmeal stouts for those who swing that way. The IPAs are a bit less hoppy than I'm used to which is a very welcome change sometimes. The sampler trays are a very good bargain and include all the beers they have on tap. The food here is also excellent. I'm pretty sure the fries are cooked in crack. The pizza's are very good (by NW standards anyways, sorry east coast pizza snob) and my friend had a chicken sandwich that he said was the best he ever had. This place will definitely have a special lil piece of my heart. The way over the Columbia River over that little, little bridge--and the brewery just feels tucked away and that you've discovered something that is a secret. The outdoor patio, and burger/pulled pork sandwich are great, and so was the IPA. The train wooshing by actually only added to its charm. Won't forget it. read more

We stopped here on the way back from a long backpacking weekend in Indian Heaven. This place was recommended to us when we stopped to look for a place. It was nice...an outside patio..it was cool. I had the steelhead fish tacos..which were yummy!! I love guac with them and corn tortillas and they were perfect for me...Had a glass of Pinot Gris with them, which was ok....Eli was our waiter and I was very impressed that without even asking he remembered what i specifically had to pay separately. Great customer service. I'd be back for the fish tacos again and the pizza looked good too! read more

If you like trying different beers, this place has plenty to choose from, and you can even try their "sampler" so that you can try a bunch at once without getting too drunk to leave. They have a little menu that you can check out that's not really your standard pub food, and the pizza was pretty tasty since beer and pizza kind of belong together. Stevenson, Washington doesn't seem a likely place for a brewery, but that's part of the appeal. This is a town I would think to only drive through while exploring the Gorge and maybe to hike Beacon Rock. So Walking Man ends up being a very pleasant surprise. The beers are, as expected, good to a one. There is no particular brew which makes me think of them, but with so many breweries in this area, competition is fierce. I think the greatest draw of Walking Man is their pet-friendly courtyard. Here is a warm weather watering hole if there ever was one. Pleasant, airy, with a laid back locals feel, Walking Man is worth stopping by whether you are leaving the Gorge or entering. Don't forget your pooches. read more

No hike in the gorge is really complete without a delicious beer from Walking Man Brewing. In a tiny town on the Washington side of the gorge, this place is a hidden gem. Their beers are delicious! They have a patio outside if it's nice out, and the inside is super cozy if there's a chill in the air. Their menu is pretty simple-we've only had pizza once, and it was tasty. Nothing spectacular, but good solid food. We really go for the beer. After enjoying your beer, I would highly suggest taking a walk down to check out the little dock on the river. The views of the gorge are especially beautiful as the sun is setting.... read more

The beer is ok. My husband and I questioned the naming and categorization of a few of them (a beer that has 100 ibu's should be called an IPA not an ale). Surprisingly, the raspberry beer was the most well made. But it was all fine. The hummus plate was so delicious! My body suffered a bit after eating all of the roasted garlic but damn it was good! My husband said his burger was fine - not "cooked-to-order awesome" but still pretty good. I love this place. Great beer, great food and people there are always friendly. The patio fills up easily and is all laughs, acoustic guitar, dogs & friendly conversations. It's got a small town feel, and some good 'ol boys along with a younger "outdoorsy" crowd and some just passing through. The boyfriend and I made a special trip out to Stevenson to grab lunch and beer at Walking Man. We had just started the Breweries in the Gorge tour, and this one was number 2 of 11 for us. You have to go down stairs below street level to get in, which was a little confusing, but we were greeted and seated promptly. There's a decent sized dog friendly patio outside, a great opportunity to socialize the pups while you eat. Anyway, the first thing we ordered was a tasting flight as we always like to sample a little of everything a brewery has to offer. There were lots of real hoppy IPAs and a couple of flavorful stouts and porters. We enjoyed everything save for the black cherry stout. I wanted to like it....but it was just too reminiscent of cough syrup for me. For food, we started with a basket of garlic herb fries. I tasted one and WOW- I'd go back for those fries alone. Hot and crispy and topped with fresh minced garlic and herbs. We both agreed without question, they were the best we've ever eaten. And that is saying a lot. My pulled pork sandwich was delicious as well and came with a flavorful house made beer bbq sauce. I would definitely order it again. I've found that it's rare to find a brewery that serves both great beer AND great food. For us, Walking Man nailed both. Delicious beer and flavorful food. Solid 5 in my book with no complaints about the service. We will absolutely be back. read more

This is the only spot to recommend in Stevenson - at least in rainy February. We eagerly awaited their 3p opening on a Sunday and within 15 minutes the place was packed! Don't let the somewhat downscale exterior put you off - the interior is cozy and packed with beer nostaglia (I think this part of OR has the market cornered on this stuff). Wait staff was very upbeat considering the insta-crowd. We went for the 10 beer taster flight to share between the two of us. Fun, even though I think I couldn't tell the difference after the first 5! Be sure and order their tots to get you through the beers. read more

Pleasantly surprised by the bar and dining area. Ordered a flight expecting big things from the makers of "Santas little black homo". Cool thing is you can get a 40oz flight consisting of one of each beer they brew. Bad thing is, we didn't fall in love with any of them. My two favs would be Homo Erectus and knuckledragger. The black lager was tasty but not exceptional. Food was okay. Garlic fries need more garlic. Couldn't order the Cuban without mustard. Service is just okay, they were nice enough but didn't come around often at all. Last thing I'd say about this place is that if you have never been here before, you'll see a house looking building from the street with a sign that says brew pub down stairs. There were NO cars on the street, so we weren't sure how busy they were. Choose to drive around the block and down the gravel alley street and saw all kinds of cars parked back there. This is the main entrance. So don't be discouraged! Stay the course. read more

If you like microbrews, pizza and outside seating...GO here! The Walking Man Brewery has the most amazing micro-beer in the entire Columbia River Gorge. Hanging on the wall behind the bar is a huge blackboard outlining the various kinds of beer available that day. Most of the time there will be stouts, bourbon barrel beers, IPA's, darks, ambers, lights, you name it. It's usually there written in pastels. Behind closed doors next to the restrooms is where the magic happens. Welcome to the brewmeister's home. Along with the excellent beer is a pretty good menu of pizza, salads and appetizers. With one minor disappointment, no dessert. Ugh. I like dessert. Maybe they'll do a stout float at some point. If I were you, I'd order a black and tan pint of "Walking stick stout" and "Rambling Raspeberry". Along with a pepperoni and mushroom pizza lathered with both pesto and marinara, a "Noah's special" (custom made). Oh man I almost forgot...be sure to visit the john when you're there. We visited this Brewery a few days ago and loved it. Service by bartender was excellent, she was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and quick to serve. First the food: I just had my second meal here. Every item I have tried on the menu has been delicious. The pulled-pork sandwich was wonderful. The pub Burger also delicious. My son ate his in a blink. Fries are a meal in themselves. My step-dad who has traveled the states for his career and sampled many a french fry declares these his favorite. The potato chips are crisp and delicious. Now the beer: I enjoy their IPAs and thought I'd try a 9 - 40z set of tasters. Each one was worth trying. Knuckle Dragger is my favorite. You will not find this place if you just straight through Stevenson. Therefore it is rarely crowded even on summer weekends. On par with the other excellent nearby brew pub (Backwoods), but with a much better selection of food (both places produce excellent, award-winning beer). I especially love the Steelhead tacos. We came here with friends after a long day of hiking to grab a pint and a bite. We've now been here for over an hour and a half and we still don't have our food. Ordered drinks and had a reasonable wait for our table of about 15 minutes and then we placed our food orders within 10 minutes. However, an hour and 15 minutes later we're still waiting for food and tables who were seated after us are being served. A heads up that they were slammed in the kitchen would've been polite so that we could decide whether to stay and order or not. Instead they seem to try and push the alcohol, perhaps hoping to appease the wait time. Don't even bother. read more
