I ordered take out Rice Bowl last night. It was delicious and will be enough for another dinner and a lunch. They packaged the toppings (lettuce, juicy tomatoes, guacamole & Mexican cheese) separately from the chicken and rice. So it will be even tastier at the next meal. I'm not usually a person to leave a review but for the quality of one's well being I felt it to be necessary. If you burnt your taste buds off when you were a kid this is the place for you. There was no flavor and when there was it was as if I was eating taste testers from Sam's club. We had asked for "carnitas" and had to explain to the worker that it was pork. If you want authentic and tasty Mexican food go to California. The steak I got was dry and the salsa tasted store bought. Chips weren't salty they tasted okay but it was so oily. Now onto the servers. They were nice but they need to learn to not get distracted. Throughout our meal we got no refill of chips and no refill of drinks that we had ordered. If you don't serve us (what you read in your job description) then you don't get a tip. Sorry not sorry won't go again. read more

It has no flavor, no spices, and my GF said 'it doesn't even seem like they use salt' haha so if you're into flavorless food and friendly people then you'll like but not expect much. El Rio is a great place to grab dinner or happy hour! Happy hour is Friday and Saturday 9pm-12ish no kids allowed in the bar at that time but the deals are great! Everything on the menu is delicious but we recommend the tostada, you get what you paid for. Try out some hot sauces on the sauce rack near the back of the restaurant. read more

This place is sooooo good. The queso is from another planet. The meats are seasoned and charred to perfection. We went with crispy tacos. They did not disappoint. We went two days in a row. Same regulars (all very nice) and all of the staff were top notch. They made us feel like regulars. We will make a point to stop here every time we roll through. Thank you! read more

My parents absolutely love this place so they asked me to take them there. When we got there the waitstaff told us to sit wherever, we chose a nice spot by the windows. My parents got enchiladas with beans and rice and loved them. I got a chicken tostada with beans and rice. It was pretty spicy and kind of dry. The waiter was nice and our food came out pretty fast. I'd try this place again and get something different next time. Maybe I'll take my parents out here again. read more

Having lived in both Texas and New Mexico and missing the style of Mexican food from that area I was hoping El Rio would fit the bill. Not so much. The layered enchiladas we just OK. We decided to try the queso (I do love Queso!!) and it had almost no flavor at all. We had to send it back after taking two bites. Salsa is not my style, almost sweet and does not appear fresh. Waitress was very lackluster in her service. When we sent the queso back we said it was not what we expected and she said, "OK". I will say she took it off the bill, which was appropriate. Shredded beef was okay, but not seasoned at all. Basically, I was eating pot roast. The enchiladas sauce was heavy and flavorless. The beer was reasonably priced, but the mixed drinks were very expensive. The tortilla soup head a very strange flavor - not at all using the traditional spices. Pleasantly surprised by this random Mexican restaurant in the middle of Stevenson, WA. We were on our way to Mt. Adams and by recommendation stopped in for dinner. For a Saturday it wasn't the least bit crowded. A few families here and there...but then again you're in a small town. First thing I noticed was the 'help yourself' wall of hot sauce in the back. Pretty cool. Overall atmosphere was nice and they had a good looking bar. I ordered a skinny margarita and it was quite good. Fresh squeezed lime, agave, and tequila...perfect blend. Chips & Salsa were nice and everything seemed fresh and homemade. I ordered the Blue Corn Creamy Enchiladas and ate nearly every bite. This was not like your average "Americanized Mexican" food. This was fresh and all in all a little more on the healthy side I'd say. The enchiladas came with yummy grilled vegetables and some rice. Good and not over sized portions. Plenty of food though and I didn't feel awful afterwards. I did notice it was a bit more expensive than most Mexican restaurants but then again you get what you pay for. I adore Mexican food. In fact, my girlfriend recently asked me if I could only eat one food the rest of my life, what would it be? And I replied 'tacos' (and seeing the genius of that answer, she immediately changed her answer to tacos as well). So versatile! It's kind of a scam answer, because you basically allow yourself all the food in the world, so long as it's served in a tiny tortilla. Anything can go in a taco. Same goes for it's big brother the burrito. But I digress.... El Rio apparently "used to be great", or so sayeth the friend who dragged me here after a hike in the Columbia River Gorge. The emphasis on "used to" is her's. There's really only one place to go in Stevenson when you're hungry and thirsty, and that, of course, is Walking Man. Unfortunately Walking Man doesn't open until afternoon, so options are limited earlier in the day. If there was decent Mexican available for lunch--along with decent beer--that'd be a pretty sweet addition to my PNW bliss. But alas, El Rio is not this place. Sad, boring burrito under a dairy helmet, with rice and blando beans. Flavorless salsa. Mexican food is easy. How can you make it so mediocre? The real crime was the drinks, however. They apparently pride themselves on their top shelf tequila selection and their fancy-pants margaritas. So my friend and I ordered margaritas, which arrived in large, frosty glasses. Then we each ordered a shot of tequila to pour into our margaritas so they'd actually have a bit of booze in them. I shit you not! That made for a pretty expensive and weak marg that wasn't all that fancy pants in the end. Tart sugar water. For shame! read more

Honestly, the salsa tastes like it's straight out of a Pace Picante jar, but not the spicy stuff, the stuff that's labeled mild, and is blander than any combination of tomatoes, onions, and jalapeños ought to ever be. That's not a good start. The waitress was kind and engaging, thus the 2 stars. The food is bland and unimaginative in every way. From the salmon tacos to the nachos, which, to be honest, were loaded with meat, to the children's food, there is just nothing authentic or tasty to be had. Took a day trip to Stevenson, WA with a few friends. They had been to this restaurant before and really liked it. I had never been to Stevenson or this restaurant. I love little adventures. Service was really friendly, they had a wall of hot sauces that you can choose from and the food was very fresh. I'll post some pics here that I took once I figure out how to do that. They started us out with a basket of chips and fresh salsa. Full of tomatoes and other goodness, the salsa was super good. The chips were nice and warm. One person in our party ordered a sangria which I had to take a sip of. A bit too sweet for me, but the presentation was nice. Photo soon.........hopefully. I ordered the Smoked Pork Chili Verde. This is how the menu describes it: Succulent chunks of house smoked pork in a mildly spicy green chili & tomatillo sauce. Nobody makes Chili Verde like this! Served with warm tortillas. If that doesn't make your mouth water, you aren't human. The pork was as described. Succulent. I like that word so much I'm going to type it again. Succulent. Ok, I'm done. All plates come with a side of mexican rice and your choice of black or pinto beans. Standard stuff, true, but everything was really good. The portions were huge and as I said, the food was very fresh. Cool little place in a cool little town along the Columbia River in southern Washington State. Worth the drive. read more
