Having personal experience as a restaurant and bar owner, I'm aware of the difficulties associated with reviews. The food industry is undoubtedly demanding. Nevertheless, upon meeting the owner, who successfully fulfills multiple roles, it's evident she deserves a good review! Our meal was prepared efficiently, and the presentation was excellent. So the back of house gets 5 gold stars! We enjoyed our conversations with the owner and felt welcomed as if we were lifelong residents of the town. The local diner's ambiance is unmistakable, with the regulars clearing their own tables and saying "see you tomorrow". I love that! We were shocked when looking at the menu after arriving to realize that the burgers are no longer $10 like the yelp photos suggested. They are $21, only 6oz, and charge extra for more than basic toppings, including basics like cheese. It was also a 3 dollar up charge....for fries. Fries. Instead we opted for sandwiches and hummus thinking we could get a better value. We were wrong. None of the sandwiches were worth the 20 dollars that they were listed at, and the $15 hummus came with dried out sliced carrots and was no better than something you could grab for a few bucks at the grocery store. The pita almost tasted sour...and it wasn't sour dough, Very disappointed, aside from the beer and cider options, which were decent. We will not be back. If you're heading home to Portland from Hood River eat before you leave. We are pretty laid back and easy to impress, but this was wildly inadequate and in no way a good experience. Cute, eclectic place. My husband and I are on vacation, staying at the local KOA. As we were driving through town we started thinking about what we wanted for dinner...I wanted chowder, my husband pizza. Much to our surprise, at that very moment, twe drove past Cascade Locks Ale House and right in the front window, the food Gods (or should I say, "Bridge Of The Gods") were smiling down on our stomach's. Although the building looks quite old, inside was full of nostalgia from the surrounding area. The staff was very attentive, our food arrived quickly...Salmon Chowder for me and then we split a pizza, half Colombian for my husband and half of the Naturalist for me. Stumbled onto Cascade Locks after hiking around in the Gorge area with my friend. We just decided to stop at the next place that looked good and that was Cascade Locks Ale House. We were still planning to go on another hike, so I was mostly interested in a lighter lunch. I ended up ordering the salmon chowder and pulled pork sliders. Both were so tasty! Never had salmon chowder before but I really enjoyed it. It had really good flavors--wasn't as fishy as I thought it'd be-- and I loved that it was creamy. The pulled pork sliders did not last long as they were so delicious. I tried them with their signature horseradish and it really was perfect! Light and airy bread with good bbq pulled pork. The horseradish has a kick to it, so just beware. If you can handle a kick, I highly recommend giving the horseradish a try, I loved it! Jules waited on us and she was great, attentive and friendly! She showed us her book of PCT hikers who stop by throughout the year which was pretty cool. It was cool to learn that PCT hikers stop there. They even have a fund to buy a hiker a beer! I love that! May be good for someone else; I walked in and the waitress says..."what can I do for you"... really? The professional greeting is...Welcome, May I get you a menu?" In a somewhat cheerful way, Right?? ...she treated me as if I were some transient and was assessing me to ask me to leave or not. So, I think she was stressed, the place is rather tight in space to sit. Even though they were tight, chairs were up on the table as if to say, we don't want to walk that far to serve and they put me in a very odd pathway to sit. Stopped there on the way to the Sternwheeler dinner cruise. The place was very dirty. The 4 tables to the right of the bar were never cleaned from previous customers the entire time we were there. The bartender choose to file her nails during our service and chat with regulars instead. File her nails in the bar area while serving others. She used a rag that was not put in a bleach bucket to 'clean' off the counter top. She appeared to hate her job and more so waiting on people she didn't know. Main Reason to Go: Proximity. Its a go to if you're in the area, if you're hiking the PCT, hiking the gorge, coming back from some activity..... Food- honestly a bit hit or miss. Sometimes the fries are oven baked to smokey perfection, other times they can be a bit limp. Service is OK. Not amazing but OK most of the time. Used to be terrible but it has improved. Food: Hummus, artichoke dip on toasted bread, chips and salsa, all OK Salad - standard icebergy type. Haven't tried their pizza or sandwiches yet so can't comment on them. Meat and vegetarian burgers, both good. Fun add on's available for the burgers like grilled onions, blue cheese, mushrooms, bacon,or pineapple. Beers and ciders are decent. After being seated she handed us some menus and I asked for a beer list, very rudely she said it's on the wall in the corner. Considering this is a tourist town I can kind of understand high prices for food. I paid $17 for a Italian sandwich I expected to be dynamic and unfortunately it was barely ok. Major disappointment and I had to pay extra for a side SO just the sandwich was that much. I couldn't believe it. Same for my mates, thought it would be a awesome cheesesteak and it was meh at best. Paid $15 for a burger that tasted like a backyard burger and $3 for beer battered fries that didn't taste anything special. I had the house vinaigrette, which was good. We had a pub burger, which was disappointing. Seemed to be made with a dry, overlooked, thin, premade frozen patty. Bun was a boring sesame bun like you get from a grocery. The fixings were fine, and they make their own horseradish and sell it by the jar, which looked good, although I didn't try it. When a pizza came out for a nearby table, we realized that is probably what we should have ordered. It was a thick-crust style with lots of cheese and toppings, and smallest great. They also have a host of other sandwiches that appeared to have potential. Beer battered fries were good. They were soft, but not in a bad way. I liked the taste and texture. My family and I visited Gorge OR, for the first time from California. We choose this restaurant for their great reviews and their outdoor area, we were traveling with two dogs and their outside area was clean and provide much-needed shade from the 100-degree weather. Since it was so hot half of my family decided to eat inside and the others on the patio a party of 14 total. When we were inside the servers were not friendly and they came up with ridiculous excuses to simply push us out of the restaurant. The first excuse, they did not have a server for their outside area. We reply that's fine we can come in and gather our food and anything we needed. The second excuse, we were not able to split the check, even though this was not requested at any time by my family. Finally, we were told they could not cook more than six burgers at a time. Even though they had four tables with two customers at each table with BURGERS!!! We were shocked and could not believe what was happening, and to why the staff was acting this way to a customer and especially to a large party, that per their review they are able to accommodate with no notice. If I could give them NO Stars I would. This restaurant left a bad picture in our minds to a beautiful town. If you are visiting this area, avoid this place they will waste your time and will make you feel unwelcome! read more

The one negative is their inability to hire staff; however the food is traditional, and it is a comfortable mom & pop type place. Only a couple of choices of healthy items, but at least on one key area, it's a cozy, warm and inviting restaurant. Pizza is decent, they have very large salads and are famous for their mustard. I can recommend the Ale House but you must be careful about making the trip since they close whenever they don't have staff which is still often.
