This was a small market that has everything you can want, even if it's not the brand you are looking for. There is a nice seafood counter and deli counter. The prices are a little higher, but it's probably due to the location. Even though it is small, the store doesn't feel crowded. The staff were super friendly. read more

We were hungry and stumbled across this market. They made us customized vegan deli sandwiches. YUM! Great service, too.

This grocery store was our one-stop shop while camping at Skamania Coves nearby. Fresh fruit, snacks, desserts... they had it all, with so much variety to choose from. Loved that they sell individual ice cream bars here, got my favorite strawberry shortcake bar. And of course, we didn't leave without picking up some wine and chocolate to go along with our planned dinner. The entire store was clean, organized, and well stocked, and it was easy to find stuff (for out-of-towners like us). Staff was helpful and efficient at the checkout counter, too. read more

I stopped in after a short stay in town before driving back to Vancouver. A & J is charming, perhaps a bit quaint, but seems to cover the bases. I was able to get a bottle of kombucha and a couple of donuts, which were far better than I'd expected. The store was brightly-lit, and staff were friendly and professional. read more

I've been shopping here since 2008. First as a tourist. Then as a resident & business owner starting in 2014. Even though a small rural grocery store, there are plenty of bouchie city like offerings. As well as great deals for families on a budget. They just started offering a full fledged Sushi bar with an independent owner. A&J does a fabulous job of balancing a diverse economical community. The staff is friendly & knowledgeable. One of them, Charlie just received an award from the local Chamber of Commerce for her dedication to our community. Well deserved. Their store manager, Troy will order what you need if it is not a regular item. And he has a great sense of humor. I know most of the employees names since I shop there almost daily. I have a hard time picking a line since I enjoy all the cashiers. Carol, Candi, Violet & Melissa. All the folks who run each department usually are smiling & we exchange greetings. A nice way to start my day to be greeted & say "good morning" to them. The owners are involved with the community in so many ways. An advocate for our schools & donors to many charities. On big snow days, it's always John & a few of us merchants who come in Uber early shoveling paths on the towns sidewalks. It takes a village. Andra & John are great leaders by their selflessness of action and by helping others. When you shop at A&J Market, you are contributing to the entire community. read more

The in-house-made barbecued pork here is excellent - fat flavorful slices. Absolutely the best I've ever had! A&J is a great place to pick up snacks for a hike on Dog Mountain, if you were in such a hurry to get out of town that you kinda forgot about the basics, like food (even if you think since your hike is only supposed to last five hours and you won't need food). Recollection of all the news reports of late about lost hikers in the Columbia Gorge did help me finally remember. Been a few years since I had been up Dog Mountain (located ten miles east of Stevenson, sixty miles east of Portland) and I was quickly and brutally reminded of the cruel 2900 foot climb from the parking lot to the clearing at the top where there are panaromic views way up and way down the Gorge (with peeks at Hood and St. Helens). Saturday was ideal hiking weather - filtered sunshine, light wind and temps in the low 60's. Anyway, back to the barbecued pork that I bought and that I noticed had a nice fragrance as I stuffed it into my daypack. Sometimes I ponder if I am paranoid or just cautious when I consider possibilities of dangerous things that can happen.... As I was laboring up the Ausberger Trail, I wondered if the scent of the barbecued pork would attract a bear and get me into a bit of a jam. I thought, nah, too many people around for that to happen. But later, as I was descending down, a black bear popped up, no more than thirty feet away! Good God! It must not have gotten a whiff of the oh-so-divine barbecued pork, because it would have come running if it did! Fortunately, the huge creature bounded off into the brush leaving me alone. Lesson learned: make sure your food in the back country is in sealed containers!! read more

If your in Cascade Locks, and your looking for Organic food, forget it! Just go on over to the Other side...across the Bridge of the Gods and head to Stevenson, Wa to the local A & J Select market. It honestly doesn't look like anything great on the outside, but it's a life saver on the inside. They actually have ORGANICS!!!!! WhOoOoOoOo HooooOOoOOoo..... No, not a huge selection, but they are scattered here and there through out the different isles. It's like a treasure hunt, and once you find them, you feel like you found gold! Like the first time I actually found Kombucha there!!! They do have some Organic produce there. Along with Organic dry goods, Organic sauces and canned goods. And Yes...they even have Organic bath and body supplies. Not too shabby for a small little market. Prices are fair enough and staff is pretty friendly. read more

This is a nice place to buy groceries while on vacation. It's located in a cool area with bars and restaurants. We stayed over at Cascade Locks and went over to A&J's to buy meat and produce (gotta pay the toll both ways). It's clean, the staff was friendly, produce is fresh, meat is fresh, and the other shoppers were friendly too. If I'm in the area, I will definitely come back. read more

A amazing store that surprisingly has a lot of stock and low prices especially during the corona outbreak. The one problem that I mainly have with the store is that the bathroom situation is not great but it is serviceable. Staff is great and have a good attitude at the times I've been there. I'm from out of town and I just wandered in here one day and fell in love with this small town grocery store! They have a great deli with tons of choices and every day there is something different. I've never seen one like it! I think I've figured out their schedule but I could be wrong; taco Tuesdays, Asian cuisine on Wednesdays, and Italian on Thursdays. I like the shortish aisles (this ain't no Winco) and the breezy shopping experience. Nice little hot deli, produce area, and bakery. Great local market. A shout out to the bakery, their cinnamon rolls are very good. Not too sweet and made just big enough to satisfy a morning sweet tooth. I noticed how happy everyone in each department and the store is well stocked and very organized. This in city location is a perfect stop to pick up quick picnic goodies and supplies. read more

My friend and I were directed there to get information on a local address as most of the employees have worked there for 25 years plus, which in itself is an amazing thing!!! When I went in I found Troy, I believe he is the store manager, but not positive. I told him our issue and needs and he went OVER and ABOVE to help us. Being so close to Oregon I was afraid this place would be overrun with products catering to homeless dirty hippies. Thankfully this wasn't the case. While they do have a decent selection of milks not from cows, vegan versions of most meats, and organic things that I didn't know could come in organic, they also have a great deli and tons of beer and bacon for those of us who still don't care where our foods come from. read more

This market has just the basics. A small fresh fruit/vegetable section, some home stuff and a small deli and drinks. The fruits were ok, not super fresh but not too ripe. I do like that the hand hand sanitizer at the door. We went in the store one door and out another. Some employees were wearing masks and even less customers were doing the same. Prices were ok. I cannot get over how friendly people are in Washington state, and this supermarket was no different. We needed one more item, and the cashier waited patiently for us and told us about the ugly sweater contest the staff were having! I regularly frequent this store and normally it's a great experience with friendly checkers, very decent prices for a small town grocery store, so I don't mind supporting local business and shopping here verses Wal-Mart, safeway or some other big name grocery outlet to save a buck or 2, great micro brew beer/wine selection, fresh produce and meat department. I was driving from TriCities to Stevenson to attend a Summer Solstice Labyrinth Experience (long story). In any case, my GPS got flummuxed and I ended up somewhere north of Beacon Rock with no labyrinth in sight... I head back into Stevenson to cook up a Plan B - bug into the local small town grocery store "A & J Select market" ... buzz over to the Deli and nab a bag of their fried chicken parts along with some sort of saucy salad (chicken or crab salad I recall). Just for grins, I ask the gal behind the counter "could you tell me where Fern Hill Road is?" She is a bit puzzled and asks a few coworkers, all while bagging up the chicken parts and saucy salad. Another staff member (perhaps these folks are called Associates... I am not sure) - she starts to head to the front of the store on my behalf to find a map. No luck with the local attractions map... So, I am checking my delightful picnic bits through the checkout - she rushes back over and has a printed Google map along with instructions and boom - the gray rain curtain rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... the map and directions are crystal clear. I head out of the store and find my way to the excellently presented Summer Solstice Labyrinth shindig. The chicken parts are fantastic - and the saucy salad makes my belly very happy. Thanks a Grand to the Select Market staff for creating some awesome picnic grub -- and mega thanks for the Stellar Customer Service. Five stars! read more

OK, lets get this first thing out of the way; If you're looking for the Smoked Pork, forget it. They don't have it & will only look at you funny-like, then say that they get that request alot. Stopped in the first day in town looking for the afore mentioned pork only to find high prices, a crowded store, & a cashier that didn't seem to be able to handle stress very well as she was kind of snappy. (couldn't count change either). The deli food was run of the mill fried chicken & stuff like that. Stopped back in on the way out of town looking for some road snacks & thought we would try the pork question on this different deli cook, no-go, same response. At least the lady that was attending the deli this day was very friendly & helpful & sliced some fresh smoked turkey samples for us, which we bought & was quite tasty. So I would stop at a grocery store BEFORE you get to Stevenson, like the Safeway in Hood, (Exit 62, half mile down Cascade Av) or something. read more

For a small town with strong community interests as they claim, I find it odd and discriminating that this business does not allow the disabled to have any service animals in their store even with the proper documentation. After all they do have handicapped parking in front. For me personally it has been a hardship to have to travel to Portland or Hood river to buy my groceries. I was deeply embarrassed and offended when Management made a scene at the check out in front of many customers. Not once but 3 times. So thumbs down in just basic respect. I suppose that my 1lb service dog surely must pose such a health risk. And to add further insult to the situation, He told me to put the dog in the car with temperatures nearing 100. Other then that.
