The atmosphere was awesome. Quaint, local, rustic, comfortable. The food was AMAZING. Had truffle fries, salmon cakes and hummus plate with Pilsner beer. All paired perfectly. Husband had blackberry cider and juicy GF burger. Appreciate having gluten free on menu! Staff was mysteriously impressive. Did flawless group serving and never seemed to have to communicate. The patio with sun or cozy at bar. Would come here time and again if I were a local. read more

Stopped in for dinner on a Friday night and had a great time! The service was TOP NOTCH! I didn't catch her name, but the waitress with long brunette hair and glasses was amazing. I work in sales and service and it was some of the best customer service I've ever experienced. She deserves a raise - so friendly, attentive, proactive with great suggestions and knowledge about the menu. We had calzones and the beer sampler - also great choices! Biggest sampler I've ever seen with all 10 of their beers for $16. read more

This place should be called the walking dead brewery. I found this place about three years ago. At that time, they had a bigger and better menu including calzone. I gave it a good review. I went back a second time and found the menu was smaller and not as good. Went back a third time, practically no menu, and when I did order a burger, it came out burnt and not what I wanted. I was up in that area again today and thought I would give them another chance. My wife and I waited for over an hour having only ordered two burgers and small fry. We finally walked up and got our money back and left. When we were getting ready to leave the food came out of the kitchen, they insulted us more by wanting to know if we wanted to take it to go. Since I had to drive 40 miles to get home, I didn't think I would want it then. I will never go back. read more

Really awesome local pizza place with a fabulous brewery. We sampled a couple of beers and had the most delectable pizza I've ever eaten. Maybe it was because the dough was that perfect mix of chewy and crunchy and thin. Maybe it was because the mozzarella was fresh and high quality (not that rubbery mozzarella stuff). Maybe it was because the basil was fresh. Or, because the tomato sauce was slightly sweet and definitely savory. Or, maybe it was because I was starving, and eating pizza is a special treat. Maybe it's all the reasons. Things you should know: it is loud; after all, it's a tavern. Seating can be a bit cramped with some booths, bar seating, and long shared tables, but Walking Man Brewing is fabulously cozy on cold nights, and a delightful patio on warm ones. I highly, highly recommend Walking Man Brewing. read more

It's a beautiful, sunny day so this place is busy. Great ambiance to hang out. However, the service and wait time were terrible! We were pretty hungry so we ordered appetizers to tide us over knowing they were busy. It took an hour just to get apps and almost another 30 mins after that to get food. Out waitress was MIA and did not offer to refill soda once until after our food came and made no effort to check in to make sure we didn't need anything while the kitchen was busy. We've been here before and not had an experience like this. If we are hungry again after a day of hiking this restaurant will no longer be one of our go to places. read more

For me, a five star rating means I recommend you go at anytime and will have nothing less than a rockin' experience. That's no longer the case with Walking Man. I hate when I bring people somewhere I have talked up so much and I feel like I am the one who has to apologize. Our service on our last visit was beyond pitiful. Three of us got pints and two people got their own taster trays. We all had our drinks except for one of the taster trays and got to watch our waitress flit about here and there not doing anything in particular other than get her flirt on with the male waitstaff. Eventually she realized her mistake and brought out the final tray. We asked if we could order food and apparently this hadn't occurred to her in the slightest as she had to go back inside for her ordering pad. We all ordered pizzas with two of the people ordering the same one. They came out one or two at a time. Except one, it was brought out much later as we were picking over the few remaining pieces from the other. Our waitress blamed the kitchen for misreading her ticket. Two of us ordered more beer. They never came and flagging this woman down was nearly impossible, we gave up and got our tickets. When we got our tickets, sure enough, she had charged us for the beers we didn't receive. When we pointed this out, she threw out the most insincere apology we had ever heard, snatched the tickets, crumbled them in a ball and went back to correct them. When one of us asked for to-go boxes, they were told to go up to the bar and get them themselves. Surrounding tables (of locals) got much better and attentive service. What the hell??? We've been coming here for a long time and even had this server before, have rarely had excellent service, but this was horrendous! Did we smell bad from our hike??? The beer is still fantastic. You can't go wrong with any of it, though there are mixed feelings on the Black Cherry Stout. The pizza is still great too. Try the cuban pizza, it's delightful. Or the mushroom pizza, they cook the mushrooms just right. The menu has definitely been paired down over the years, but I think what they do offer, they do very well. So yeah, if you don't mind service issues or being charged for things you don't receive, maybe it's still five stars for you, but for me, I'm going to consider the other delicious beer options in the area before stopping in again. Their oysters should be back soon. Maybe that and the amazing beer will be enough to get over my last experience and stop in again. read more

The worst restaurant experience I had all year. Stopped by here back in August. We were ignored by everyone in the place for at least 10 minutes. Never did get service. The bartender watched us at the table the whole time and 3 waitresses walked by, then chatted for a while in the kitchen. There's some serious management problems at this place. Avoid if you value good service. read more

Drunk on the sun after what seemed liked days of rain for these San Diego tourists in the Columbia River Gorge area, we came upon Walking Man Brewery. After hiking the Oneonta Gorge, we had to drive across this Bridge of the Gods, a big name to live up to, and it did. It was so beautiful. But anyway, we drove down the road into the tiny town of Stevenson and saw a bunch of people drinking beer and a lone bagpipe player, sitting in what looked liked an 80 year old lady's un-weeded backyard. Needless to say, we were intrigued when we saw it was an actual Brewery, so we wandered in, uh, how could we not. I am not a huge drinker normally, but before my tush barely even reached the seat, a very stong beer just manifests in front of me, I didn't even order yet and was so tired from our day of hiking I just accepted my fate. I guess the bartender had some sort of telepathic powers and knew I was soon to become a reformed lush for the day, because it's exactly what I wanted and it was one of the best beers I have ever had!! The place is small, but no worries, the locals are cool, we just had the best time here, we chatted it up with some really funny and friendly people, (one very old man that was a little too friendly ;) all while enjoying the awesome beer. read more

Ended up coming here because of a not so great experience at another near-by brewery. I had never been here, nor tried their beers, so we were taking a shot in the dark so to speak. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a very friendly server. The atmosphere and decor was really great, and it felt like a place that the locals frequent and love. I enjoyed the beers, and even took home their Homo Erectus IIPA which is delicious. So being vegetarian, I wasn't sure if there would be many options, but they had plenty. The Black Bean Burger I had was really good, my SO had the Black & Blue Pizza which was also really tasty. The salad greens were so fresh that she ordered a second plate of greens to nibble on. Overall this place is top-notch in my opinion, is really comfortable, and has a great friendly staff. If I lived closer, I'd visit often. We will certainly be back. read more

Walking Man Brewing - Breweries Near Me - Stevenson, Washington

See all

Beer is good, food is better than mediocre (Pulled Pork Nachos and Steelhead Salad did both hit the spot), but the service killed it for us. Really made us not want to head back. It looks from lots of other reviews that we're not alone in this. In fact, going off of Yelp's guide to stars, it would probably be more of a 2 - 'Meh' describes our overall experience more than 'A-Ok'. However, I've got to respect the Homo Erectus, which is a fantastic beer. Also, other than fountain sodas, there's nothing other than beer to drink. Ok for me, but disappointing to some in our party. When it comes down to it, if you try Walking Man hand leave disappointed and frustrated, do yourself a favor and keep driving east to White Salmon, you'll have a much better experience and better beers at Everybody's. read more

I'm reluctant to give any brewery a bad review, especially a small-town one, but... We walked in around 3pm and the patio was packed (which may explain the bad service a bit). We headed into the mostly empty restaurant area and took a seat at the bar, where one of the three servers halfheartedly greeted us. Two of them asked what we wanted and then didn't get it. Eventually the third one wandered by and took our order. It was a decent 15-minute wait, and I was feeling a little testy by the time we got our sampler of beers. The beer itself? All but one or two of their selections are brewed with Belgian yeast. Most people don't know the difference, but Belgian yeast tastes like soapy sock butt. I know it's widely loved, but if you're one of those folks looking for non-Belgian beers, well, Walking Man isn't your brewery. The pizza was nothing to write home about either, just a simple thin crust with sauce-outta-the-jar and some nondescript toppings. As we were walking out, one of the servers called out "have a good night!" Annnnd that was the most attention we got the entire time we were there. We definitely will have a good night....elsewhere. If you're craving a post-hike beer, stop at Brewligan's in Troutdale. read more

Maybe because of covid, but the wings were plain and not good. Took approximately 1hr to get food!!

Some of the worst service I have ever received. My boyfriend and I went here for a post-hike beer and snack. After seating ourselves at a table on the patio, we patiently waited 15 minutes for someone to take our order and then finally decided to just go inside and order at the bar, where we ordered 2 beers (which were mediocre), a pizza, and some fries. Fast forward 45 minutes, when we still hadn't received our food and our waitress had yet to come over to our table. Meanwhile, the table next to us received several rounds of drinks and food from the same waitress that had been ignoring us. When we finally asked about our food, she informed us that our ordered had been "buried" and we would have to wait a bit longer to get it. Fed up and still hungry, we canceled our food order and paid for our two beers. The only positive was that the kitchen sent us off with some fries in a to-go container for free after we paid. read more

I like IPAs! I like salmon, hazelnuts, and pears on pizza! Wait, what? These were two of my discoveries while at the Walking Man Brew Pub (I swear that I actually did go to meetings on my trip and did not spend the entire time drowning my sorrows over having to fly back to Durham in beer). This pub was the location for my group's last dinner and it was the perfect spot. It's pretty small. Luckily we're smart and eager and got there at 4:15. The food is surprisingly good for a small brewery! For the first time in my life, I was with a group that ordered one of everything off the menu, and it was AWESOME. The pizzas were my favorite thing, especially the margarita and salmon/hazelnut butter/pear options. I know that's a strange combo and definitely isn't for the faint of heart, but dang was it good. Onto the beer....ordering the sampler flight is the way to go to start out. I split it with another girl which ended up being a great experience because we had completely oppostie tastes in terms of beer! Everything I hated she downed in a second. It was a match made in heaven. Oddly enough, my favorite beer was one of the three IPAs. I'm still surprised, but the Runaway IPA was soooo smooth and not bitter at all! Delicious and deadly. The brewery has lots of character. When the time comes to "break the seal," you have to decide if you're a Dreamer or a Reader (think about it folks, you'll get it eventually). And if you want a souvenir, the t-shirts featuring their award-winning Homo Erectus brew is a real charmer. read more

We contemplated a national chain sub spot or this local business. We chose the best. We can get a sub any day. The classic hamburger and fries were delicious. Service was very good and friendly. During the summer they sometimes feature local musicians outdoors. We had food and fun that night. Can't say anything about the beer. You'll have to look for a comment from someone who drinks beer. read more

This is one of our favorite places to eat. The menu is small but always delicious. A must order is the Garlic Fries. Our 1st visit to the walking man we ordered the Garlic fries and people all around us struck up conversations about them.( You can smell them a mile away ) Next thing you know everone ordered them as well. My wife and I also love the beer selection. We both agree the Walking Man IPA is the best. IOHO...There is a reason the beer has won many awards. I definitely recommend this restaurant to the casual person but, for A beer drinker its a must. read more

After checking Yelp on Saturday to know what we were in for before we drove all the way up the Gorge to hit the famous Walking Man, we knew we had to be there right as they opened at 3 pm. So we were. 15 minutes early, and got a choice table outside in the rare gorgeous NW sunshine. By the time they opened at 3 all the tables were full and there were more people who didn't have a place to sit. The server opened the door and said you need to come inside to order your food/drinks at the bar, there is no table service. We're like Ok, so my husband leisurely gets up while there's a mad dash to the door. He has to wait in line for about a half hour to order our food and drinks. I'm relatively ok with this, it's a nice day outside and they just opened. Our food came about another half hour later. The margherita pizza is pretty good, crispy crust, stretchy cheese. We also got the pulled pork sandwich which was ok, the garlic fries are super good. I'm preggo so I got a root beer which was delicious, not sure if they brew that in house or what. Hub got some kind of ale and he loved it. We had invited some folks with a dog to join us at our table so they wouldn't have to leave, and we chatted for quite some time while we all ate. Time to leave, and hub was wondering if he had to go stand in the line again to pay the bill. He pushes his way through the long line to the bar and asks for his check. He was told to get in line. REALLY?? Just to pay the bill?? So he does. 45 minutes later, not kidding, I timed it, he had finally made it to the front of the line to pay his bill. I don't care how good of food or beer this place has, they need to get their act together. Hire more people, start table service, whatever, but a 45 minute wait in line to pay your bill is utterly ridiculous. read more

Been coming here since day one. The beer is amazing, food top notch, and environment owns the moment.

Sadly this place didn't have a menu online so I ate at a different Stevenson restuarant and was sad I did. Menu here did look quite good. This place was packed on a Sunday evening. Love the dowstairs location with large outdoor patio area. Inside was nice and large too. Much enjoyed the readers and dreamers bathrooms. Beer list was nice too. Debated the sour but tried the black berry stout and ramblin raspberry instead. Definitely worth a stop, too bad they close so early. read more

Came here from Cascade Locks as we spent the weekend away from Seattle. It had great Yelp reviews, so we made the drive over. What. Was. Going. On. The service was seriously lacking. Our server was incredibly snippy and hard to find. The food took a long time... I get it. You're a brewery that serves food. Fine. The food was good, but I don't like to feel like I'm an inconvenience. Patio was cute and the beer was good... but I won't be back. read more

We were only in town for one night and I am glad we decided to eat and drink here. We waited about 15 minutes to eat outside which was nothing after being on the road for so long. The food was great and the beer was even better. We sat outside and the atmosphere was perfect for even our 2 year old. The next time I am in this area, I will be back. read more

In the area for a wedding just passing through looking for a brew pub so this is a review based upon a one-time visit. The lunchtime staff were very busy. The restaurant was not. (Read ...slow service) We ordered beers first. Took a while, but of course they had to change the kegs on 2 of the 4 beers at the table. Ahem. Right. The beers eventually made it to the table and they were excellent! Mine in particular. I had their black cherry stout. The wife had Irish Red Ale. Also very good. The beers ran empty and the food came. She had a black and blue pizza. Black olives and blue cheese. Both from a can. Not very good quality. I had an amazing loaded fries. Crispy, perfectly seasoned fries topped with pulled pork, poblano peppers and a beer cheese sauce. Excellent. Our server was slow, but very personable. After a week in town and several breweries, I'll be back here next time I come through. read more

Loved this place. Got out of meeting at Skamania lodge and wanted something other than than the lodge bar... Whenever I go to the gorge for something, I do my best to fit in a stop at Walking Man. We get a decent amount of walking man beer in Portland, but you have to go to the source to get some of their best stuff it seems. Not that I mind - it's a great little pub. I've eaten here a couple times, and I was happy enough with the food, but the beer is where this place really shines. You see a lot of Walking Man pales and IPA's in Portland, and they usually dominate the taplist at the brewery as well, but you also see things like barrel aged imperial stouts, vintage barley wines, dopplebocks, etc... when you visit Stevenson. The interior of the pub is pretty small and often crowded, but when the weather is nice the brewery can accommodate a larger crowd with it's great patio seating. Walking Man tends to make their beers a bit stronger than some of their colleagues, so check the ABV's when you order. If you don't have a DD, you can get your trip's worth of beer safely by picking up a growler of your favorite to go. If you're in the gorge and like great beer, this is a must visit location. Combine it with Everybody's, Double Mountain, Full Sail, and Big Horse, and you've got an awesome little beer loop to pound your liver into submission. read more

I'd give another star if the food selection was bigger...and when I visited my favorite beer wasn't on draught. Dangit I guess that's my fault but I digress. The pizzas looked really good for what that's worth. We just weren't that hungry :( The beer prices are really reasonable - my boyfriend and I went, each had 2 pints, shared a basket of fries, and came out around 20 dollars lighter. The atmosphere is kinda rustic (lots of wood and stools made of rebar and diamond plate) which is nice as a getaway. Decor consists of malt sacks and vintage beer cans/labels. I love it. There is ample garden seating outside but it was too cold when I visited. Summer should be awesome. read more

I absolutely love this place. The beer is fantastic and the pizza didn't let me down. We had the Northwestern, which had salmon, pear slices, blue cheese, toasted hazlenuts, and the crust had just a hint of spicy... Amazing. The indoor seating area is cozy. There is outdoor seating available (weather permitting). It was pretty busy but we were lucky enough to grab a table when we walked in on this last trip. I can't wait to go back. read more

Wow, how did we not find this place before now? I read some of the 4-star reviews while deciding where to have dinner, and they basically all seem to leave a star off despite being happy with the place. The garlic fries are great, the pizzas are great, the salads are quite good, the beer is among the best, and our waiter was awesome. The only thing I would change would be to have more beers in bottles to take home. read more

Walking Man is an awesome brewery and a must-stop in Stevenson! I have loved all the beers I've tried there, especially the Cherry Stout, the sour, the saison, and the raspberry lager. My partner likes the IPA's. The food is spot on, too! The truffle fries with garlic aioli are delicious and perfect for sharing. For vegans and vegetarians, there's a tempeh banh mi that is really good. Also, the service is fantastic- everyone is super friendly and it looks like they genuinely enjoy working together. Plus, they have music on the porch weekly in the summer. Go and you'll be glad you did! read more

Oh my, how I love this brewery! I've even been so bold as to call it my FAVORITE BREWERY in all of Washington! And it is true - these guys know how to brew! My favorite of their beers (though it is tough to pick just one) is the Black Cherry Stout! Lucky for me, the Horse Brass in Portland ALWAYS has this on tap, or I may have to move to Stevenson. HOWEVER, there is nothing like going to mother-ship, where one of your favorite beers is born. I love this place. The staff is great - super nice and very attentive! The pub is small and cozy, which I love! Just make sure you get there right around when they open because everyone knows how great WM is (i.e. it gets packed fast)... especially if you are trekking from somewhere not near Stevenson. The food is just kinda okay. Not bad, but not particularly memorable. That said, we've not had their pizza, which seems to be their focus, and that might be more deelish. But, who is really there for the food? The beer is where it is at and this place is the place to be. Make a day of it: Hit up Dog Mountain for hike (with killer views) and then rest your weary bones over a delicious Dark Cherry Stout or Homo Erectus Imperial IPA (and some grub of course!). read more

Oh man, a GREAT Black Cherry Stout!!! Does that say it?! A few nights ago, we had pizza at a place n Hood River. They were serving Walking Man Raspberry Wheat on tap. I fell in love. So we decided to come try out their place and see what else we might like. I fell in love again with the stout! It's a cute little place with a very casual, kind of like home, feel to their patio area. The place was busy which always tells us things are good. We tried several different beers but fell back to the Raspberry Wheat & Black Cherry Stout. Our furry friends are welcome on the patio too! Four paws up!! read more

Must go after a hike. Amazing food and incredible beer. Calzone and lodes fries hit the spot. Get the cherry stout.

Cool spot with good beer and tasty bites. I ordered the bucket of corn dogs with beer cheese dip, spicy chicken wings, and the soup du jour - plenty for the wife and I. The chow was nice but the beer was even better. The sample tray of brewskis was delicious and exactly what I needed to wet the whistle after the drive out here from Portland, my Mrs ordered the cherry stout and really enjoyed it as well. The ambience of the downstairs taproom was perfect and the staff was friendly and happy to help. If I go back Ill probably need to pick up a tee or hat. read more

Stuck in town for the day so went in here for a few beers and something to grub on. Their menu is basic but what I tried was really good. What got me was the alcohol content of their brews. I consider myself an accomplished drinker but this place caught me by surprise. Most of their beers were to my liking so I just kept ordering random pints and before I knew it, I was boiled. Luckily they close early and it was a short stumble back to my hotel room. I'll definitely be back to this place if I'm ever in the area again. read more

A perfect day in my world involves a hike in the Columbia Gorge followed by a visit to Walking Man Brewery, the best darn brewpub in the Pacific NW. The beers are amazing. The food is pub fare, but decent pub fare. Love the fries and the spring rolls and the pizza is good. The beer is consistently well crafted. My favorite is the Flip Flop Pils, a summer seasonal. The interior of the pub is small and cozy, possibly the Platonic ideal of a brewpub. (Don't miss the "reader" bathroom with its steampunk sink and collection of quotes on the wall.) The outside courtyard is lovely with simple but effective landscaping that encloses the area nicely. I can't think of any place that I would rather be on a summer evening. read more

I've stopped here before for brews, but this time we added some food to the mix. First off, I think their patio might be one of my favorites in the Gorge. It's below street level, so there's no street noise, surrounded by wildflowers...just a chill place that I could spend hours at. It sounded like there was an accident in the kitchen that closed it up temporarily, so they set up an awesome outdoor grill area where they kept the food train rolling. We had the black bean burger, as well as salmon tacos. Both were amazing! I'd come back for the food alone. The beer at Walking Man is always on point...IPA, Double IPA, Pale Ale...we had it all and wanted more! Great place. Will def be back. read more

If you like beer and live anywhere near Washington, do yourself a favor and get over to Walking Man as soon as you possibly can. How good a brewpub is it? Easily the best in Washington. First off the beers are consistently amazing, and even styles that shouldn't be all that great usually are (Black Cherry Stout for example) and mainstays like Homo-Erectus are among the best I've tasted. The atmosphere of the pub is excellent as it is packed with locals and service is very friendly combining for a laid back easy vibe. I couldn't help but wish I could live down the street and be a regular. I believe there's a word for that and it's called "heaven". Finally the food seemed to be as expertly crafted and thought out as the beer. I didn't expect to find great beer in someplace like Stevenson (no offense to the locals intended) and I definitely didn't expect the pizza to be as delicious as it was. The thin crust was packed with flavor and the toppings of high quality. Ignore the name and RUN over there! read more
