Forget cooking anymore, I'm eating dinner every night here. Ok I wish, really wish. I've been meaning to try this restaurant, finally did and loved it. Starting with our server, she was so helpful. She knew everything about the dishes, what ingredients are in it, and where the meat comes from. It's been a long time I had fresh oysters and needed some guidance. Our server helped me in the right direction. The Queens Cup and Kusshi were perfect introductions being light and mild in flavor. The poached salmon entree was fantastic. It's a perfect collection of flavor. The lettuce wrap took us a little by surprise. It was spicy, not super hot, but it had heat. It's texture added to its surprise with a little crunch. The star was the Opah. It was the home run at the table. We tried really hard to take little bites so we could enjoy it longer. Then came dessert. Voyager is in a nondescript building off to the residential parts east of Woodward slightly north of Nine Mile. Area is dark and hard to see so watch out for a building with Voyager in script on the side (very easy to miss). Restaurant decor is minimal but classy. Vibe is not pretentious at all. These types of spots make me really love Ferndale. We got the fruits of the sea, which is their equivalent of a seafood tower (which is different each time, so ask what the platter entials). We got 6 oysters (East coast from what I can tell because of the size/briny-ness), a salmon tartare, a lobster tartare, a scallop crudo, grilled shrimp that's been chilled, with a bunch of different sauces (creme frache with caviar) and came with delicious cheese crackers. It was $95 and can definitely fill you up with some bread. Ate the lobster tartare more like a lobster roll with the bread. Next time I may ask for toasted bread for the other tartares (yes there will be a next time!). Getting the fruits of the sea dish limits your choices for trying the other dishes since it is a "small plates" concept where you pick a few and get to try a few different things (in my opinion, the best kind of restaurant!) We got the crab toast, which was very different from what I expected. I thought there would be a paste of sorts but it was poached crab meat with radish and fresh vegetables. It was very delicious and exuded absolute freshness! We also got the baked lobster shells in a vodka sauce and browned butter. I mean, lobster, vodka sauce and browned butter. I definitely scooped up some of that sauce with the bread just because! Food was great; service was fine. The small kitchen definitely dishes out amazing food. Great spot for great seafood in Detroit. Menu is rotating so cannot wait to come back and try other things (might skip the fruits of the sea platter next time and get into the small plates). Best place to have seafood in Detroit IMO. They have an amazing selection of oysters, with a handful Ive never heard of!! I arrived during happy hour, with an emphasis on their fish sandwich. I went ahead and ordered it not knowing how impressive it would be! Possibly one of the best fish sandwiches Ive ever had. Super crispy breading on the whitefish, the meat had a wonderfully fresh seafood taste, and the fluffy bun held the fish like a pillow. My only complaint was how piping hot it was. I almost burned my tongue! fair warning before you sink your chompers into this one. I regret not having more time to come back and try more of the menu here. As a huge seafood lover, I LOVED this place! The peel and eat shrimps were my favourite, the seasoning was perfect and the meat so tender!! Loved the oysters too, although it would have been perfect if they had horseradish. Because my fettuccini was delayed the waitress was very kind enough to give us shrimp tostadas on the house. Sauce was great. Great source. Good flavors lingering. Fire roasted shrimp - great flavor and great source. 10/10 Rice and tomatoes - 10/10 the fava beans were a nice touch too. Catfish - perfectly cooked 9/10. I thought the flavors could've popped a bit more but it was still among the best catfish dishes I've ever had. Why a 4-star review!? Their featured cocktail is called General Lee. And they served it at a Detroit event on Juneteenth!!! I was so upset when I saw that. C'mon guys. The metropolitan is 1/3 descendants of American slaves, and it's a black city. Fix this immediately please because I really love the food and want to return. Took parents here for their birthday because it was a non chain seafood restaurant with great reviews. Unfortunately, they change their menu up weekly, so I had no idea what to order after learning I couldn't order the crab spaghetti It was hard to find because they have no sign and it's behind an auto parts place. The kale salad was good. Portion smaller than expected. My mom and dad enjoyed their Georgia white shrimp dish. We were concerned they would have enough food because it came on bread with no sides. It was just enough for dad. Mom took home a doggie bag. Dad said the bread was like a steak. Music and other guests were so loud, we couldn't hear each other talk. This was an absolute disappointment and borderline offensive. The four of us came here with excitement to find a place in metro Detriot that focus on seafood... just to leave very "salty" in a literal sense. While waiting during the 1.45hrs wait, we tried a few cocktails there were all very well balanced. We ordered the following with high hopes: Simply Salad - very simple and clean with a touch of floral, which we all thought was fun. Leeks - $13, literally 1 or 2 sea scallop. The baby leeks came nice and warm but the temperature of the scallop was so cold that the difference between the items just too much Chili crab spaghetti - overly salty. The peppercorn naturally will amplify salt with its spice. I don't know if the chef responsible for this understand that. Tuna toast - it was fine, this and the salad were the only two items edible without chugging 2 glasses of water Pork & eggplant - the pork was smoky and one of the milder item of the night. I'm sure it was due to the torture dishes previously that perhaps we couldn't tell anymore. Catch of the day - highlight of our bloated journey. Unbelievably salty to the point we thought it was a Portuguese style salted cod. Everyone had a mouthful of salt as crust. I wish management would stop for a moment and think about why the servers have to constantly refill water glasses. This rating was purely based on food taste and integrity. I did not even put anything else in consideration. The oyster dude just substituted our selection of oyster without letting us know or have an option to pick something else. Not only right off the bat a handful of food items were told they're out of for the night at 7:30pm, the fish we actually wanted was then became sold out. The reason being was that it wasn't because the fish is out, it was due to the presumably pre-made curry sauce were gone for the day. $180 is a normal price for a seafood dinner for 4 people. It takes a lot for anyone to write a review these days. I made a return trip to Voyager because I was totally craving happy hour oysters as well as their fried oysters. We got there at 5pm and the place was packed. My friend and I managed to score some seats at the bar which I've decided is my favorite place to sit. We ordered 2 dozen oysters and other items off the menu. This was mainly because the last time I was here it took a really long time for the oysters on the half shell to arrive and I was really hungry! We ran into the same issue on this visit and they had 3 people shucking oysters! But fret not my friends...we had some amazing dishes while waiting for the oysters. New to the menu are the scallops and sweetbreads with hollandaise. This dish was so good that I was ready to order another serving. I also had my favorite fried oysters and my friend had some broiled oysters. Our 2 dozen oysters finally arrived after the other dishes and they were just as good as I remember. This place might be my new favorite restaurant in metro Detroit. If you have ever been to Boston this place is akin to the famous Neptune Oyster bar, salty girl and B&G Oyster. Voyager has brought the real Oyster bar vibes, food and hospitality to the city of Detroit. I recommend that you try to sit at the bar and watch the oyster shucking action as the master get down to business. Their menu changes with the season and they always try to highlight The ingredients that are at the peak of the season. We truly wanted to try so many offerings on the menu but we decided to settle on the asparagus and mushrooms to start and the shrimp curry special and roasted trout for our main dishes. Both of the veggie dishes were unbelievable. The asparagus was cooked perfectly with a crispy exterior and tender interior. The outside was charred which added a smoky flavour to the vegetable. The dish was adorned in a garlic pine nut garnish that was the perfect rich compliment to the fresh asparagus. The mushrooms were a total umami bomb. They were also crispy on the outside with a soft buttery interior. They sat atop a balsamic purée that added the perfect zing to the earthy vegetable. The shrimp dish was a bowl of perfectly cooked head on prawns and mussels that was bathed in a warm Thai style broth. The whole dish was topped with fried vermicelli noodles that was the perfect crispy garnish to the hearty stew. For our second main dish we had the trout which was a whole deboned fish. The skin was crispy and the inside was tender, light and flaky; it truly was cooked to perfection. The whole fish was topped with roasted potatoes and an herb salad that was the perfect balance between light, fresh and hearty. Overall, this restaurant definitely deserves a five star rating. My husband ordered it and I commendered it. Hushpuppies were Awesome! Bartender was very well versed I had Cherry Lime Margaritas from scratch. The kitchen cranked the food out, not a long wait at all. Lastly, the crab claws are cracked just so you can wiggle all the meat out and enjoy. Little effort great reward. Ordered 3 east coast (French kiss) and 3 west coast (Royal Miyagi) qoysters and ate with their house sauce with wine, shallots and vinegar and other stuff I have now forgotten. Tried their house made ginger beer, simple salad and crab salad. I contemplated getting the stone crab but it's $40 and I am not sure I wanted to spend so much on crab tonight. Ben waited and took my order from the bar, my favorite spot when I am solo. The simple salad is topped with panko, surprised me as that will no doubt upset my stomach soon. Not for the gluten free folks and be sure to ask for it without. The crab salad is also topped with funnel cake, but that's easier to take off the top of it then small pieces of panko on the salad. The kale looked purple in color and was easy to eat and get down, the ginger dressing on the salad was good, maybe slightly over powering, but not bad. The crab salad wasn't bad, not loving their extremely creamy dressing though, a bit too heavy and overpowering on many ingredients, it took away from the crab itself and the cocktail sauce should have been on the side, that was too much for me as the crab salad was already over the top and too many flavors in contrast for me to determine whether it was good or not to me. As my dessert I tried their Maryland baked oysters with garlic and oil and why not. It wasn't bad, the garlic oil isn't better than the raw with the horseradish and Tabasco to me. Like a lot of the new places, Voyager has a very definite point of view. If you are tracking with it, you will love it. If you are expecting something different, you may be disappointed. What it is: a minimalist bar and seafood shack that feels lifted from the Keys and dropped randomly on a back street in Ferndale. What it isn't: fancy, elaborate, ornate, pretentious or Birmingham. Don't know what's happening to this place, but have been a pretty regular food go-er here and had a terrible service experience this weekend, which is putting a sour taste in my mouth to ever come back. We ordered drinks from the waitress while waiting for a seat at the bar. My husband asked for a Negroni with a particular liquor, the waitress came back with the drink and the wrong liquor and said they were out of the one we asked for and tried to pawn of the drink with the different liquor. Instead of just coming back, she tried to push this drink on us and we refused and asked what our other options were. She listed off a couple of types of gin. She mentioned Two James gin, which we never had (didn't realize they did gin?) so we politely said we wanted that instead. We watched from the wait area as they proceeded to put a different kind of gin (not Two James) in our drink. We then waited to see if our waitress said anything, but instead she put the drink on the next table over, not even our table, and walked away. No words said. After mentioning the drink mishap to the bartender later, he simply said, oh yeah, we don't carry Two James gin, and seemed like he didn't think it was a big deal. For $14 a drink, we should be able to get the type of liquor we'd want, or at the least have had the option to choose-- totally understand if you're out of something. I completely understand if the waitress messed up on the gin options and the bartender let her know to go tell us, but to start swapping stuff out without telling us is just wrong. Not at that price point for a drink. The rest of the food was good, but to be honest so many other places in Detroit are good now. There definitely needed to be more salt added to the dishes. I love oysters so I was excited to finally get to go to Voyager. I came here for lunch with my two friends and I walked out decently content. The building looks like it's on a port and when you walk in you can tell it's on the smaller side of the spectrum. There is a bar to your left and not too many tables in the place therefore everyone is sitting pretty closely to one another and the atmosphere has a rustic nautical feel to it. I ordered the Starboard drink, which I did enjoy. We were recommended to try the peel and eat shrimp and hush puppies. So we then ordered along with two dozen of their oysters, which I unfortunately cannot remember all by name. Out of everything that I had eaten I say I enjoyed the peel and eat shrimp (grilled) the most. There was something about the flavor with the dipping sauce that just complimented it really well. I also like how they don't use smaller sized shrimp. I think it was a good portion for the three of us. The hushpuppies were not anything to rave about. I did like how it had a hint of sweet brown sugar-y goodness to it though. And as for the oysters, I did enjoy them although the only downfall is that it only comes with a tiny bottle of their housemade sauce of I believe red-wine vinegar and then wedges of lemon on the side. So if you do want cocktail sauce for your oysters you're going to have to address your server and ask for it. Overall, it was an ok experience. read more

I went to Voyager with my friend a couple of weeks ago after work and loved it! We went there on a Wednesday around 8pm and it was pretty packed. We ended up sitting at the bar and had impeccable service at the rail. I ordered a beet appetizer that isn't on the sample menu online, but super good with pepitas and some kind of creme fraiche. I also shared my friend's plate of hush puppies. They were delicious and not greasy at all, which was fantastic. For my entree, I had the Tuna on Toast with duke's mayo and chili. It was completely filling and super tasty. There was dill a top of it and pieces of diced hard boiled egg. I would absolutely have it again. This is primarily a seafood restaurant so if you aren't a huge fan, there are still some options for you, but I'd possibly consider other places in that isn't your niche. Enjoy Yelpers! read more

Really unworthy of saying anything more about it than that, but I could talk about their "house fettuccine" with the overcooked pasta that was more the texture of noodles, of course, right?, served with a pleasant amount of lobster at room temperature. Voyager was an outstanding experience from the first step inside. My family and I had reservations for 2pm for their Mother's Day brunch and were greeted by name right when we walked in before we said anything. (The head of reservations also emailed me around 1:15pm letting me know our table was ready when we were, which I didn't see but thought was very kind he took time out of his busy day to do so). The inside of the restaurant is very cool and comfortable and was decorated nicely. The food is served to share "family style" and comes out when ready. Everything we ordered was outstanding, we ordered the grilled peel and eat shrimp, greens & grits, pancake, whole trout, soft shell crab omelette, oysters, and the caviar & egg toast (party of 6). Each dish presented its own flavors and were truly delicious. (The only mixed review was the green in grits which was between good and great depending on the person). My personal favorites were the peel and eat shrimp which competed with that you'd find in Florida, the whole trout, and the soft shell crab omelette. All were 10/10. We had a very nice and attentive server who did her best to help us through the menu and give recommendations. The cocktails were very delicious and they provided a good amount of tasty wines, only two beers on tap but had several other bottles. I had that lobster roll which was very tasty. It was a painless and speedy experience. I ordered online and picked up 30 mins later from the comfort of my vehicle. There were about 6 cars in the lot all waiting like me for their bag of goodies. Things aren't normal but at least the Voyager is adapting to that new environment so not all is lost or forgotten. Great seafood. And the staff is super friendly and explained everthing on the menu. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because I went in on Saturday night and they were out of more than half of the menu items. I understand they are closed Sunday and Monday and due to the freshness of the food they run out of things on purpose. So maybe next time I'll go in on a Tuesday. Still it was kind of a bummer. We got the crab legs and they were awesome, the oysters were awesome, the tuna on toast was awesome. I just wish I couldve had the scallops, thats why I went there was to try the scallops. This is now mine and my fiancés third time returning to Voyager. We always make reservations ahead of time. They seat us right away and even accommodated us when we ran late after being stuck behind a train. You walk in and are greeted with the pleasant smell of fresh seafood. Oysters are being shucked right by the bar. Its a small space, perfect for an intimate night out with a friend or partner. Our go-to cocktail is the Golden Hour w/ tequila, apple brandy, pineapple, and lemon. Everything is cooked to perfection. Some items remain in the menu but each time we go, we are always able to try something new on their specials. The staff is super friendly and always have great recommendations. Lily helped us the last time we were there and she recommended we try the specials and helped us find a wine to pair with our desserts. 12/10 would recommend this place to anyone looking to try something new and enjoy bursts of flavor in every bite! read more

First it was difficult to find the building, drove right by it twice since it had no definitive markings. When we did find it we only located the entrance when someone came out. Looks like no one cares if people find the place. No light and no sign, not welcoming at all. Is this some kind of new thing that is supposed to make it seem more exclusive? Strange. Tucked away in a much quieter part of Ferndale is this cozy little place. Our server was so attentive and the head chef wanted to know what we thought of all our dishes. All plates are intended to be shared - we went hungry so we ordered a fair few! Cold smokey shrimp to start, then delicious hush puppies, duck fat roasted potatoes, crab fried rice, seared scallops and the barramundi special of the night. All delicious and pared with interesting vegetables and garnishes. Delicious cocktails - the bartender also sent over a delicious vodka/cucumber/apple creation when he found out it was my birthday. All the staff were warm and inviting and the menu was interesting. We don't normally have dessert but the white chocolate cream puffs were worth breaking that rule. Spent a beautiful and sunny day in Ferndale bar crawling and stopped by here for some cocktails and food. It's a small spot right by the main street with some outside seating/standing tables. The place was pretty busy when my friend and I arrived. Luckily, we found a standing table in the patio right away. For drinks, I had a cocktail and my friend had the rose. For food, we went with the baked maryland oysters and dungeness crab. Drinks and food were fairly priced. My cocktail was delicious and beautifully crafted. The oysters were a hit, delicious herbed butter. The dungeness crab served on ice was also very delicious. I wished we had a whole crab, but it was $15 so it made sense why we had half the legs on the dish. Overall, great spot, great service, good drinks and seafood for a fair price. Nice ambience. Perfect place to dine on a summer day/evening. Will be back again. read more

I spent over 100 dollars at Voyager on appetizers and drinks, but I'm not mad. It was the best 100 dollars I've ever spent. Cleanly shucked oysters, best tuna tartare I've ever had, and a wonderful drink that I'm still trying to replicate. Thank you, Voyager, for being my number one seafood place. read more
