Hard to get in to this place - expect a wait on a Friday or Saturday night. They have a small space and a small patio. We tried a bunch of different types of oysters - raw, fried, and baked. The baked were my favorite. The smoked whitefish was also very good. They also have an awesome wine list and the server was awesome describing each one! Service was impeccable. Finally made my way to Voyager for Happy Hour! It's in a quiet location, a bit out on the outskirts of Ferndale. You get $1 oysters (only 1 or 2 kinds off the regular menu) and 1-2 drink Happy Hour specials. Happy Hour is only Tuesday-Thursday from 4-6PM. Happy hour specials are definitely a good time to go if you want the $1 oysters, but the ones off their regular menu are definitely worth a try as well. There were 2 of us and we order 6 of the happy hour oysters, and 6 off the regular priced menu (3 kinds, 2 of each). We were extremely happy with our choices. They were super fresh and with a squeeze of lemon, it really brings out the flavor of each. They offer a pretty good variety of different oysters, originating from different locations across the country and you can actually taste the difference! We ordered 4 dishes aside from the oysters, which included the peel n eat shrimp (there's chill and grilled - we ordered grilled), chili crab spaghetti, scallops and sweetbreads, and the fishermen stew (I forgot the name for this but I think it was that! - picture will show!) 1. The grilled shrimp was amazing! I loved the sauce that came with it (with old bay seasoning and the comeback sauce). You can literally smell it as they brought it out. This would definitely be one I would get again when I visit Voyager the next time. I couldn't get enough of the sauce. I kept the extra on the side to dip other dishes into it. 2. The chili crab spaghetti was also very unique and spicy! They use the Chinese Sichuan peppercorns which makes it quite spicy but in numbing way. If you've eaten Sichuan food before, the spice/numbing feeling is very familiar. If you're not a fan of spicy foods, I wouldn't suggest getting this cause it is a little overpowering if you're not used to the taste. It is delicious, but a little too overpowering that you barely get the crab taste. 3. The scallops and sweetbreads dish was unique as well. If you've never had sweetbread, this could be an interesting texture. It's a little chewy, and sometimes a bit fatty, but with it being fried, it's almost like eating fried chicken thighs with a bit of fat. The hollandaise sauce is savory and sweet. Not much scallops on this plate, maybe a max of 2-3 pieces cut in half. 4. One of our favorites of the night was the fishermen stew! This was a broth with mussels, salmon pieces, shrimp, and clams. It came with a piece of toast. Dip the toast in the broth, and it just taste amazing! The broth was a bit salty, so I wouldn't drink it, but great for dipping. Overall, great little place, with excellent service! Our server was very nice and gave us great recommendations. She checked back with us often and our waters were always filled when needed. Also, it is still fairly new so they do keep the place pretty clean. It was an old garage before it was turned into a restaurant, so it's got the rustic look, but that's what makes this place one of a kind. Another great tapas place in the Ferndale location. Neat little place away from the hubbub of downtown Ferndale. Great waiter who explained all the dishes to us. Lots of shareable items but the fish sandwich was the best I ever had!! Kind of annoying that I couldn't order fries with it despite other dishes offering fries...weird. Hush puppies were delicious as were the other dishes we ordered. It's like stepping into the ocean, with your mouth. No, really, it is. Voyager is such a wonderful addition to the area as good fresh seafood at reasonable prices is hard to come by in metro Detroit. This place is tucked away off the beaten path off 9mile near CVS. It is a former garage and if you blink you could miss it because a) it's small and b) the building is rather nondescript. Parking lots is extremely small but there is street parking and a lot around the corner. The star of the show here are the oysters. On any given day they have a rather abundant selection of east and west coast options and one southern option. I highly recommend going during happy hour where they select one east coast and one west coast to showcase for $1 a piece. My favorite were the west coast from British Columbia, they definitely had more flavor than east coast. East coast oysters were larger but as we know, bigger isn't always better. They also feature on cocktail for $3 and cans of Hamms (um why) for $2 during happy hour. The featured cocktail was a pineapple daiquiri on the rocks which was very tasty and not overly sweet. The suggest sharing plates so we did that. Aside from the oysters my friend and I shared the broccoli, peel and eat shrimp and fisherman's stew. As crazy as this sounds the broccoli was amazing, the sauce was like to die for good. The shrimp were delicious and seasoned with Old Bay. The stew was good but not great, the clams and mussels were perfectly cooked but the fish pieces were overcooked. Several other menu items sounded really good and I can't wait to go back to try them. I had to eliminate one star due to the exceptionally slow service. This place is very small so gets busy so you'd think they would be busting food out as fast as possible, nope. We waited about 12 mins for our drinks. Our oysters (only 4) took over 35 mins to arrive and they aren't even cooked! This poor guy is standing there shucking them to order!! Maybe they could prep them ahead of time? Then the rest of our food took an additional 30 mins beyond that. Second round of drinks again took almost 15 mins. So while the food rocks they really need to work on efficiency if they want to turn tables. Lastly, the second reason for the loss of a star is that there is no air conditioning in this place and it's hot and humid inside. They opened the doors but then it became a battle of the bugs having to swat flies away from our food every few mins. read more

We tried ordering take out tonight through their dockside menu. We called because the menu was limited and the message said you could place a carry out order by calling. We were told that there is a limited carry out menu and we needed to do it on the online website. We entered our order and the only option showing was picking our order up in two days. We decided to just go inside to place an order and that seemed to be an issue with the staff. The menu sounds great but service and actually getting to order food prevented us from trying the food. I have been dying to go here since they opened and finally had the opportunity just last week. I heard seafood and oysters and my taste buds did a happy dance. We arrived at a non- descript but busy parking lot and figured we'd found the place. The exterior still looks like a work in progress. Inside there is a small bar and seating area. Were were told there would be a wait for a table but that seats were available at the bar. We went to the bar and ordered some drinks. Full bar, with small wine and beer selections. I ordered an Avery beer- the Liliko'i Kepolo. Good beer and went well with seafood options. Next were the oysters. Different coasts were represented on the list. No description was provided with the list, just where the oyster was from. All oysters are a la cart and ranged from $2.50- $3.00 ish dollars each. There is a $29 oyster dish (sadly not a dozen oysters) mentioned on the bottom in addition to some other presentations of the oysters. Descriptions of oysters were provided by staff. We ordered two each from different coasts to get an idea of flavor variety. When oysters arrived- a replacement had been made for us as oysters we originally ordered were out. Retrospectively it's a bit odd that we were not asked what we'd like to replace them with. Initial dishes included grilled shrimp and the mussels and marrow. (Yes - I said marrow.) my friend ordered the second dish and we were a bit surprised with it because I think we were like mussels yeah- the grilled shrimp was a small portion of seasoned shrimp (heavily seasoned) that was a bit burnt. I've never had marrow- so... having no one explain it we were both unsure what to do. I tasted it- interesting fatty flavor with a bit of a creamy consistency. It was in a bone on top of toast with a few mussels cooked and out of the shell on the plate. After a bit of trial and error- found that the marrow with the mussel was good on the toast. However I am still not certain that this was what the chef intended. Lastly we ordered the salmon ceviche. This item took the longest to receive and when it came someone from the kitchen brought it out. I thought it odd because it's a raw dish. It was a blend of hot spice/hot sauce, avocados, and fish. I ate one bite and decided not to have another. My companion had a bit more but we did not finish it. I had another mini bite but this dish was definitely not a good dish in my opinion. I wanted this place to be a bit more simple and straightforward seafood place. The food is more tapas like and pretentious. Very similar to Toms Oyster bar in Royal Oak without the patio. It's also overpriced. Staff was friendly, restaurant clean and understated. Service was good. Granted it's new but will most likely be a while before I go back. read more

Ok. I have to preface this review with a few things first. I heard of Voyagers opening and I was intrigued but I wasn't dying to go. Every time the opportunity presented itself to go I just wasn't feeling it. When I read the menu I thought, "ehhh". I wasn't really in the mood for it and also it sounded like pretty typical dishes. However what I got from my experience was anything but typical. I met some co-workers for drinks which extended into dinner. It was packed early evening which was surprising because most places are not slammed at 430pm. Honestly, the ambience I didn't love. Everyone was packed in like sardines by the bar. I ordered one of their signature drinks and didn't like it. I tried some of their other mixed drinks and didn't like them either. I'm sure their mixologist will come up with some new offerings so it's not a deal breaker. The drinks left me wanting, but not the food. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. Maybe I ordered really well but every single dish was a solid choice and that seems unlikely that it was just a good order. The whitefish sandwich: seems like it would be a boring choice, but it was huuuuge and had a nice little unexpected kick to it. It was anything but boring. I would totally order this again. I wish it had some sort of chip that came with it though. Bonus, our waitress had an extra sandwich that she gave to our group. Something happened and yadda yadda la la there was an extra sandwich. Uh...yes please. We of course took it and inhaled it. We thank you wonderful waitress and whoever made a mistake. :) The hush puppies: one would think they would be like all the other hush puppies in the world but... hot hush puppies plus honey butter... that is all I need to say. The Peel Shrimp: we had two orders of the grilled. It was that good. Just a nice fresh simple dish. I either just really wanted shrimp or they put crack in that bowl because I was addicted. The oysters: we literally had the around world platter, east, west, south... all of them. I have to say that I preferred the green garlic Parmesan broiled oysters myself. Pretty damn good! The swordfish: my friend said it was outstanding. I didn't have it but it looked like an aesthetically pleasing plate and if he said it was good... it was good. The steak: o...m...g ... it was soooo good. The portion was small but I had a million dishes that night so it didn't matter. It was the best sirloin I have ever had. No sh*t. The best. It didn't taste like a sirloin. It melted in your mouth. Actually most places I get a steak, I order it and 9 times out of 10 I'm disappointed because I could have made it better at home. For some reason I always think that when I order a steak at a restaurant it's going to be different. I always hope there will be a little something extra in there. I'm normally disappointed every time. Until... Voyager. :) Go try it out. I would order a couple dishes before and have this at the tail end. The crab salad was also a very nice accompaniment. I had a decent cab with it as well. Their wine list was decent and the choices I did have were good. At the end of the evening we rounded out with the pineapple upside down cake. I don't like cake or desserts but this guy was tasty. Everyone enjoyed it. I have to say that customer service was awesome. The bar was slammed but the bartenders were rushing to get everyone and I didn't feel neglected. Once we were seated, our waitress was top notch. Even if the food was so/so (which it was not. It was amazing!)I would come back for her alone. That sounds weird but those of us that go out frequently know that good customer service seems hard to find. Despite the uber hipster environment and loud music there is still quality service here. Not the "I'm too cool to serve you and you should feel special just to be here" vibe. I also love that the owner is working right alongside everyone else. He came and talked to us about the steak and where he gets his meats from (which is local and I love that). I'm not sure why I had such reservations about coming to Voyager. Maybe it was because I wasn't in the mood for seafood? However what I do know now is that I am ALWAYS in the mood for Voyager. Stop in and check it out. If you enjoy seafood and steak you will not be disappointed. You will leave the place with a higher tab. It is easy to pass this place. Look for some open lots to your right (if you are going west). Now you see that unassuming building closest to you? The one with most of the cars parked around there. This place has some pretty good seafood dishes. Mostly intended it share with a group! White fish dip and hush puppies were very good. My favorites were the peel and eat shrimp and the cockles & crackers (best thing we ate) I was extremely disappointed by the Carbonara it has so much pepper it was difficult to eat, no one at the table ate more than a few bites. Voyager is one of the new trendy restaurants in the Detroit/Ferndale/RO area that actually serves up quality and not just looks (no shade though). I recommend getting here pretty soon after they open. We arrived at 4:45 PM on a Saturday and had no problems being seated, but by the time we left at 6 there were multiple people waiting. The food: Great! Very fresh. The concept of being able to buy individual oysters is cool as hell. We also tried the snapper ceviche which was refreshing and had a more Mexican flavor, as well as the grilled shrimp which were delicious but extremely messy so have some napkins nearby (you've been warned). If you don't like seafood, don't come here. Unless you're okay with imbibing nothing but alcohol, which brings me to: The drinks: STROONG! I tried the "blow the man down" cocktail and the Mai Tai and trust me when I say they don't skimp on the alcohol at all. And I have to give props to our lovely bartender who offered me a glass of champagne to go with my oysters- fantastic suggestion :) The service: The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and nice, so there were no issues whatsoever. After discovering this up and coming restaurant on Instagram, I was thrilled with the concept. Finally a seafood based restaurant in the Detroit area with a fresh new vibe. With my excitement, I was eager to try this so I headed over on their opening night. The atmosphere is cute. Slightly naughtical but hip and quaint. The lighting during happy hour is fantastic, the large windows in the front let the setting sun in. The service is absolutely top notch, especially for the first night of service. Our waitress was very knowledgeable on all the dishes, the oysters, the beers and cocktails. She was fantastic. For dinner, we were delighted that we arrived just at the end of happy hour. Our waitress brought this to our attention (thankfully) so we quickly put our oyster order in. They were insanely good! They have a terrific variety, so we ordered a few of each region. They took a little while to receive but only because I'm sure everyone was ordering them. Following the oysters we ordered the ceviche. It was good, but VERY small and unfortunately not ceviche. It was more like a tartar of sorts. For the entrees we ordered the chili crab noodles and the frito misto. The crab noodles were excellent. I've had something similar in Scottsdale so I was eager to try these. If I had any suggestions I would say that an Asian Noodle would probably be a better fit. It was a little sticky and thick but still tasty nonetheless. I'd also add some freshness to it like some herbs or cucumbers, but hey I'm not the chef, haha. The frito misto was good but not exactly as described. It said shrimp and fish in the description and it was 1 shrimp, some clams, lemons and some other unrecognizable items. It tasted good, but I probably wouldn't get it again. Overall very good effort on the Voyager's part. Wow. I'm still a bit speechless about our experience at Voyager. The service was good. The staff was nice. The food... not good at all. For plates that are supposed to be "shared" the portions were extremely small for prices ranging between $15-20 a plate. The oysters smelled overly fishy and were accompanied by the smallest bottle of sauce I've ever seen. We tried the Mushrooms and Burrata with burnt honey. This dish was by far the worst we had that night. Burnt toast, some cheese and some goofy looking mushrooms over the top which according to the waitress were "locally sourced from a guy who lives in Ferndale". I couldn't help but picture some hipster living in a basement growing mushrooms. I was turned off from the start. Didn't help that the dish did not taste good at all. Very bitter mushrooms that tasted like dirt. That item needs to go. We had two orders of the chili crab spaghetti. Again portions extremely small for $15 a plates. Very offsetting taste that even the waitress warned us about. Too much peppercorn. Not enough crab. Mouth and throat burned for the rest of the night. The only bright spot was the hush puppies. Only reason this review is 2 stars instead of 1. I would've had a great dinner if I ate two dozen hush puppies. read more

Inconspicuously tucked away on Burdette Street off of 9 Mile and across the street from CVS is this little gem, literally, it's little. Bar height seating runs parallel to a wall partition that doubles as standing room with innovative drink ledges, and on the opposite side of the room a long banquette with two tops. It's a charming space that feels relaxed and inviting. Came here on a Friday after a long week only to find out their oyster happy hour is only on Tuesdays-Thursdays! But I was there and committed and while a shuck for a buck is my second favorite things after bottomless mimosas, I looked past it and kept that information in my back pocket for my next go-around. While the waitress informed me that they're known for a good Mai Tai, I was feeling adventurous and ordered myself a Crack Jenny's Teacup ( Valentine liberator, cantaloupe cordial, lemon and egg white). It wasn't too sweet but had a nice tartness, went down smooth, and took the edge off of the week! Success! They also have a somewhat sizable list of wines that they can recommend based off of what seafood you'll be eating. The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and really knows their seafood! I personally am more of a pescatarian these days (unless I'm around my Filipina mother who doesn't believe in such a thing) so anyone who is as passionate about seafood as I am gets a gold star in my book! Started with a few West coast oysters after our waitress gave us a good run down of flavor profiles. You are also given the option of dressed, fried, or broiled and I love options, but I like my oysters raw with just a bit of lemon, so I passed. I ended up really loving the Sunset Beach from lower hood canal, WA. Here's a quick rundown of everything we devoured: Hushpuppies: The best I've had in a long time (and no, I'm not comparing these to Long John Silvers). They were a crunchy golden brown on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. They're topped with a honey butter that really plays on the sweet and savory notes that I love so much. Scallops and Sweetbreads: Now, this was a dish that I would probably come back for time and time again because A) I'm a sucker for a perfectly cooked scallop and B) These fried pieces of sweetbreads added so much decadence, richness, and texture to the dish that It was hard to not just sit and chew with my eyes closed while smiling in pure bliss C) it was dressed in this butter lemon sauce and let's face it everything is better with butter. Definitely not a light dish, but a great one for sharing because as delicious as it was, it was a bit heavier. Mahi on the Hibachi: It sits on a bed of long grain rice which then all sits in a pool of callaloo curry. The fish was cooked to a perfect medium! I HATE when my fish is overcooked, and this one was just right! The curry sauce was good, but not my favorite. I think other than the rice an added bit of texture from a veggie or something would have been nice to break up all the softer textures going on. Not a bad dish, but not my favorite. While I surprisingly skipped on dessert since I was up to my neck in sweetbreads and oysters, the overall dishes were delicious through and through. My only complaint is that the scallops in the scallop and sweetbreads dish were cut in half versus being served whole which worked great since I was sharing with a friend. But because it was cut in half and sitting underneath the fried sweetbreads the taste of the scallop got a bit muddled in the butter sauce and then all I could taste was the salt, which in my opinion was a touch heavy handed. There also needed to be a bit more acid to help break up that richness, but overall I enjoyed my meal and experience. I will definitely have to make it back for a mai tai, oyster happy hour, and of course to make my way through the rest of the delicious menu! read more

The restaurant is tiny and packed. Kind of a weird location on the outskirt of ferndale near the train. Thought it was a garage. They don't call it voyager for nothing. We were packed into the restaurant like sardines in a can. Free parking is a plus. I came here for happy hour that runs I believe 4-6 on Tuesday-Thursday. 2 varietals for select oysters one from the east coast and one from west coast for 1 dollar. Man that is cheap. I think that particular day we had one from BC on the west and WV on the easy. The BC ones were sweet, briny in texture. The easy coast ones were more creamy, buttery, soft on the palate. More importantly, the oysters were really fresh. Have you ever had old oysters? UGH. The ones at voyager live up to their name of being fresh and I really appreciate that cause it is hard to find fresh seafood in the Midwest. Also tried the whitefish sandwich everyone raves on Yelp about it. It was a good fish sandwich but I mean it wasn't like the best one I have ever had or anything. The portion wasn't as big as I expected either. I think it is definitely a 1 per person sandwich, not like the hugest thing in the world or anything. Maybe, the size was decreased. IDK. I digress. Also had some kind of a pineapple daquiri for 3 dollars and they have 2 dollar cans of Hams beer. Hams not bad. Reminds me of PBR in a way. Good memories. The pineapple daquiri was refreshing but not particularly strong on the alcohol if you like that sort of thing which can be good or bad depending on you. The only negative thing about our experience was the seating and the slow service in the kitchen. I think it took 45 minutes for our oysters to come out which was unusual I think. Our server was really great about it and nice and kept checking on us and reassuring though, I know it's not her fault. She even threw in some hush puppies that were pretty good. Overall, will definitely come back. IDK any other real places with oysters this fresh and cheap and this will definitely keep me coming back! Happy yelping! It's relatively small, so there was a bit of a wait but the bar area is first come first serve, so we seized an open two seats. Service was attentive, and the bar staff seemed to really enjoy being a part of something new in Ferndale which came through in conversation. Great little raw bar with oysters from various regions to sample. Like other reviews on here, I HIGHLY recommend the Chili Crab Spaghetti. It has some heat so be prepared but absolutely delicious! I probably had too high of expectations for Voyager because I love seafood. I enjoyed my visit and the food was excellent, but I thought there would be more pure seafood, as in not all souped up. They had swordfish on special, but the only other straight up seafood on the night we visited was oysters and shrimp. Maybe we ordered the wrong things but we got half the menu. I kind of wanted more fish or something that wasn't doused in butter. The swordfish was awesome and cooked perfectly and probably my favorite dish. Everything had a great flavor like the hushpuppies and crab fried rice. The trout appetizer was also excellent, though I'm not sure serving it in a can is the right move. Sure, that's the local thing to do in Portugal but... it's Ferndale. Overall, the food is good and the service excellent because we also ate with some vegans and Voyager pretty much made them whatever they had in the kitchen including a hummus concoction. I would've loved to try the scallops on my visit, but I guess I'll have to come back and hope they make the menu. Most of the dishes we ordered had a nice flavor to them, but it's always a bummer to spend over $150 and leave hungry (and no I am not a glutton). The $13 scallop and the $15 spicy tuna crunch appetizer were the most ridiculously priced items for the portion size. The scallop was comical- just one scallop sliced into 4 or so pieces. Cmon now. My actual favorite dish was the cheapest and most filling- the sardines with Dijon and toast. Man I am so bummed to write this review but I need to be honest . I was told by a friend that , yes it looks good but the flavors are not there . Still I needed to try it for myself.. I mean the photos look amazing ! Well the oysters , fried , baked and raw were very tasty. The chilled shrimp was just awful . Although it looks pretty it was undercooked and the seasoning was off. I love fennel but it just tasted like black licorice. The catch of the day "swordfish" which was supposed to be lightly breaded .. was deep fried thick . Then the sauce was on half the fish . Just a odd way to serve it if you ask me. What happens if I loved the sauce and wanted the other half of the fish to have some ? Or what if I hated the sauce , like I did . Lastly the soft shell crab sandwich. Don't even waste your money . Honestly I'm not one to say this but if you are iffy on going just don't go , or just do happy hour . Seriously SO GOOD! My husband and dined had the best experience. The food was fantastic, the service was awesome and the drinks were tasty! We ordered our diner in shifts and with the idea of sharing in mind. The fisherman's platter was outstanding. The right amount of everything. I live oysters and LOVE sardines! The hush puppies had the right amount of buttery goodness... the soft shell crab was unlike anything I've ever eaten... seriously never knew a funnel cake could taste so good. And the steak tartar... We came Saturday for delicious happy hour oysters and cocktails. The east coast oysters are always delicious. The special of the day was a Dungeness crab, the shell hollowed out with a creamy crab sauce to use instead of butter to dip crab legs. It was absolutely delicious! It was a bit expensive but it was big enough for two. I highly recommend trying this when they offer it on special. read more

I had very high hopes for this place looking at these reviews - when reality asserted itself, I was $87 poorer and experienced one of the worst dinners I had in last decade and that is not exaggerating. We left 90% of food we ordered and they did not even bother asking why. We had: White fish spread - so salty that I gave up after one bite. Cucumber salad - think skinned cucumbers in one of worst ginger dressings I had. 2 pieces later I threw in a towel. Tuna toast - very greasy (greasy bread, mayo) and not very tasty. Gave up. Whitefish dip was so salty it was disgusting and uneatable, cucumber salad had huge chunks of thick skinned pieces with disgusting sauce, completely uneatable. Backstory: We had been wanting to come to Voyager for over a year but they didn't initially allow reservations for small parties. The place is small, and our party of four tried without reservations a few months ago and found a 2 and a half hour wait on a weeknight. When we found out that they now take reservations, we were excited to finally try this place out. While we knew the menu was limited, we figured based on the rave reviews and wait times that it was a must try. We were wrong. SO WRONG. Easily top 5 worst meals I've ever had. We started off with assorted oysters from both coasts. The west coast oysters tasted very fishy, which our waitress assured us was normal. We eat oysters on the regular and vacation in Charleston, SC every year so we know what good oysters taste like. We've had west coast oysters multiple times at other local restaurants and they've never tasted fishy. These weren't it honey. We also ordered 2 orders of the chili crab spaghetti, the spicy tuna crunch, hush puppies, and a buratta mushroom toast. The hush puppies were the best thing to grace the table but honestly, it's fried dough, you can't mess it up that bad. The chili crab spaghetti we were told ppl love or hate due to the spicy/tingly feeling it causes. We love spicy and lots of people mentioned how great this dish was in their reviews which is why we ordered 2. It honestly didn't taste spicy but like my mom's spaghetti from 3 days ago that dried out and had a cheap, strong, herb-like substance poured onto it. Gross. Honestly, we love seafood and small plates and really wanted to love this place. The service was good but other than that the night was a fail. We left hungry and disappointed. I really want to know how all these people left great reviews. Went here with my husband just after 4pm on a Saturday & sat at the bar. Waitstaff was great & super friendly. My husband had 3 different types of oysters (East coast & New Zealand) and thought they were fresh tasting and delicious. The whitefish sandwich was the best I've probably ever had: perfectly crunchy, moist, and flavorful. The scallops and sweetbreads was a smaller plate but really, really good. 100% would come back try the other amazing stuff on their menu. Tip: the menu on their website is slightly different from the menu at the restaurant- guy at the bar told me they change it up a lot. My only regret is not having room in my stomach to try the baked Alaska, which sounded amazing. read more

A friend recommended this gem and we loved it. It's a very small place but has a very cool vibe. The staff and service was unbelievably kind and efficient. The food is family style and comes out when ready but the server did a great job of staggering the dishes. We never get rushed or like we were waiting. I read about this place on Facebook listed among the top places to order from during the Coronavirus. Drove from West Bloomfield to Ferndale for the take out order. Boy was I disappointed . Two orders of fried whitefish dinners with 2 orders of hush puppies with tip came to over $60 and it was a waste. The whitefish was heavily breaded with a tasteless coating . Two little lemon slices in the bag. The hush puppies were made with a jalapeños which would be just fine but then coated with a finishing salt that made them inedible. The slaw was bland. For my money, this is currently the best restaurant in either Ferndale or Royal Oak. Reminiscent of some of my favorite seafood centric restaurants scattered around the country (The Ordinary, Walrus & the Carpenter), it has bargain bin modernist décor, and killer food. Went recently for the second time, the first was made memorable by the absolutely amazing fried fish sandwich (which unfortunately no longer appears on the menu). This time we sprang for a few dishes to share, beginning with some perfectly fried oysters. Massive and juicy, every meal here should begin with this particular crustacean in any form. Moved on to the crab and celeriac salad with caviar. The brown butter vinaigrette was perfect and it's one of the tastiest plates of food I've had in months. Next came the chili crab spaghetti, good, and love the numbness of the Sichuan peppercorns. To follow came the paella with chorizo, topped with a bright fennel and cockle salad to cut through the immensity. perfectly fried rice, it was a spectacular and flavorful plate. Last was the simplest in form, but utterly perfect in execution with a special cod served meuniere style with brown butter and caper sauce that you could have drank with a straw. Just a spoon dropping perfectly cooked piece of fish. The sauce hit all the earthy, savory, acidic and spicy notes you want. Nice wine list with a good selection of seafood pairing whites and sparklings. Attentive service. While certainly not the most luxurious place to dine, the food coming out of the kitchen can stand up to anyplace in Michigan. A big favorite. read more
