I've been here twice now and will probably find a new place to go after this visit. When making the appointment I had to spell my name 5 times before they found my name in the system. They also scheduled me for the wrong time which annoyed me even more because it was a long drive for me. The doctor is good, but I will be looking for a better place next time. read more

Great service and open on Saturdays. They take most insurance and the office is very clean. They would earn 5 stars if the selection of glasses were larger, but since I'm not a hipster I don't need over the top choices. read more

I have been a patient at Anderson Lane Optical for almost 4 years. I have always had to wait at least 30 minutes to be seen at every appointment I have had with them, but felt I could deal with the long wait once a year. Once I was finally back, Dr. Schaper did take his time and was very thorough. I am not one to take the time to write a review unless the service I had was exceptionally great or exceptionally bad. Yesterday I called 1800contacts to order contacts (I am on my last pair) and was informed that it had been a year and am due for an eye exam. Scheduling an eye exam was the last thing on my mind because I recently had a baby (3 months ago. also have a 4 year old). 2 days ago our AC went out at our house which caused extensive damage, so I loaded up the kids and we came out to my moms house which is about an hour and a half outside of Austin. The customer service rep then suggested I call my doctors office and schedule an appointment and ask them if, because of the situation, they would be willing to approve an order for one box of contacts (said that most doctors have no problem doing this even without a situation like mine). So I called Anderson Lane Optical and explained my situation to the lady who answered the phone. For some reason I was suddenly placed on hold mid-sentence. When she returned to the phone she was very rude and just had a bad attitude for some reason. She told me that no, they will not approve one box of contacts that I could come by their office and pick up a trial pair. (They have never had my contact prescription in stock before, in almost 4 years but not the point.) I told her AGAIN that I was out of town at the moment and would probably be out of town for a while as there was damage done to my home when the AC broke and it all had to be repaired before I could bring my children back into the home. She said "welp, sorry thats all we can do". So in other words, not her problem. At least that was her attitude. I was very disappointed they would do something like this to a loyal patient and because of this I have made the choice to find a new optometrist in Austin and you should too! read more

I was pleased with 2 appointments. Staff and both doctors were friendly and thorough and spent ample time with us. The appointments were much longer than I expected, but I greatly appreciated the extra time they took helping my son work with contacts. It was not time wasted. I saw Dr. Schaper for myself and he conducted a quality exam and confirmed my prescription without any hidden costs. The staff was fine and I did not have to wait long to begin. Dr. Dres and his team saw my son for his first eye appointment as a teen and I thought it went great. Everyone was supportive of his nerves. I wish I had the same patient help when I was that age getting my first contacts. They even double checked my insurance details just to be sure I was right about not having some coverage on things. I thought that was nice to make the effort, after I already assume I needed to pay out of pocket for my own exam. read more

They must have had a staff meeting. Staff was much friendlier and helpful at this year's check-up. Plus, the price of my contacts actually went DOWN. Yeah! read more

I have to say, my experience here was great! The Dr. was excellent, and Jeanette was fabulous. All the ladies I talked to were very friendly and helpful, so I'm not sure where all these nasty reviews are coming from. Either way, I know I will be back, and in the meantime I will enjoy rocking my awesome new Prada frames! read more

My name is Ken. I went here about 1 year ago to find some new glasses. I had a scratch on them and since I bought the warranty they assessed them while I waited and ordered me a new set of lenses before I left. I spent a little more than I wanted to but I usually tend to like the best of the best so I paid with my c.c. and before I new it I could see. After reading the post below... I can just say that when I went there. They attended everyone in order and didn't leave their side until they were handled. That's my 2 cents...I would recommend this place to family anytime,. To be clear, I never actually made it into the office...... Called to make an new patient appointment. The receptionist began gathering basic info then asked me for my social security number, before she even asked me for my insurance number. I told her I'd rather give her that info when I come in for my office visit. She told me they had to have it to verify my insurance. I opted to take my money elsewhere. read more

I have been a customer for many years, and once again, they came through for me when my glasses broke at work the other day. Always professional and caring, I am grateful they've been here all these years and hopefully, will be for many more. Kathleen M. read more

Today was my very first visit here and I will definitely go back. The staff is very friendly and seems to go the extra mile to help you get what you need. I saw Dr. Hearn and LOVED her...she was very sweet and very thorough. Now I can see, I learned things about my eyes that I didn't know before and I have picked out a rad pair of glasses from their large selection...I even called my dad after my appointment to recommend them to him. Ok, bye. read more

The doctors and the staff here are always so friendly. The ladies at the front greet you when you come in and I sincerely think they were almost as excited for me as I was when I picked up my glasses last week! read more

Went there a long while and it was ok. Now no one ever answers the phone and they don't call back to make an appt. how do you run a business like that? Going elsewhere. read more

I went for a pair of glasses, and found the staff to be friendly and -- even better -- honest about the way frames looked on me. And they didn't steer me toward the most expensive. They weren't ready in an hour or whatever the chains are claiming these days, but these also are way better for my eyes (that is, no headaches or distorted vision on the sides) than the pair I have that were made by a chain. Two follow-up issues: There was one miscommunication about the lenses that was actually my misunderstanding, but they offered to correct it at their expense. And when my insurance company reimbursed them more than their estimate, they issued me a refund immediately ... unlike my dentist, who considered it his gain. But that's for another review... read more

I agree with reviewer Samantha W.--five stars for the docs, one for the staff. I've been wearing contacts for 30 years, and I've seen Mark Schaper for my contacts prescription several times over the last 10 years or so. He was always fine for my nearsighted-only contacts, but his skills have really started to shine since I switched to bifocal contacts. They can be very challenging to fit, and in fact I most recently went to him when the ones I was prescribed by someone else (in another city) didn't seem to be working well enough after about 6 months of wearing them. He told me why he wouldn't have prescribed that particular kind and switched me to some others. Those were fine for a few months, and then didn't seem to be working well enough, so I made a follow-up appointment. He tried a slightly different prescription, and the bottom line is that bifocal contacts are an imperfect solution for me, but he laid out the options and pros and cons clearly enough that I could make a decision I'm content with. He also seems to respect the knowledge I've gained from wearing contacts for so long, which I greatly appreciate. The staff, on the other hand, doesn't seem to know what they're doing. I've never gotten glasses or contacts from them, but whenever I've interacted with them, there's always a hiccup in the proceedings. I once called to reschedule an appointment and they had no record of the original one. Twice now, they haven't been able to find me in the computer--once when I was making the appointment and once when I was in the office. And this latest time, the woman tried to schedule me for a follow-up when none was necessary--I hadn't gotten a new prescription. At least one of those women has been there forever, so apparently they like her, and I suspect she's not going anywhere else soon. It would be great if the staff were as good as the doc, but if I have to choose, I'll take the talented doc any day. As for the signs in the waiting room mentioned by Carolota G, I've noticed two: one asks people not to yak on their cell phones, and one asks people to keep their kids under control. I guess they've had one too many people talk on the phone while their kids play dress-up with the glasses. I'd put up signs, too, and they probably wouldn't be as diplomatic. read more

I have found my eye doctor and glasses store. I'm not sure who the folks with the bad review talked to, but I had only pleasant experiences there. My daughter and I got glasses there last year. My daughter picked a french designer frame which apparently was not made for her active life style (she is a competitive figure skater). Her frame kept braking and the ladies at the store were extremely helpful in getting replacement parts ordered asap and they kept the repairs affordable too. While we will never pick frames from that particular designer again, we made our next appointment already. :) read more

Took my parents, ages 84 and 90 here. Dr Schaper was fabulous -- extremely thorough and patient. They both got glasses, and I went back myself for a routine checkup, dilation, tonometry, and field and acuity exams and ordered contacts. One of my children has regularly seen ophthalmologists for twenty years because of a vision disorder. Dr Schaper's exam could stand up to any of those. The office staff was friendly and professional. Glasses and contacts were ordered, and I was called to pick them up, I will certainly return. read more

start with the bitter, snotty receptionist who has never heard of the concept of customer service, then wait for an eternity beyond your scheduled appointment even though there is only one other person in the waiting area, then finally to the cold, inept Dr. Shaper who has no regard for creating a comfortable or professional environment. what a winning formula!! how does this place stay in business? So I paid to get a prescription for contacts which I have worn for 30 years and never had such difficulty in fitting. first this Shaper character couldnt figure out how to come up with some contacts that I could actually see with. I had to go back repeatedly maybe 5 or 6 times. I ran out of time and was on the road for work over the next several months and never was able to actually get my prescription from him. when I finally got a chance to go back for my prescription the people tell me I will have to pay another fee first because its been so long . well it had been about six months so the prescription is still valid and I already paid for it once. so I refused and they refused to give it to me. so they got my money and I got nothing in return. sounds like a scam to me. read more

I went here for an eye exam and to see about a new set of glasses. I'd just moved into the neighborhood and was hoping to keep Anderson Lane Optical as my eye-care provider, but that won't be the case. The eye exam I received was routine. Neither the doctor nor I had much to say. The women operating the front desk and the sale of eyewear were, however, very unprofessional. The selection of frames at A.L.O. isn't bad, but many frames had brand logos or designs on the sides which I'd rather not have, so I asked to see a catalog. This disgusted the woman working with me, who insisted that I wouldn't find anything they didn't have in the store. When I did, she admitted they're stock had been pretty "picked over." Then, as I was paying and about to leave, another woman behind the desk had the gaul to ask me, upon discovering from my insurance card that I'm a local teacher, why so many teachers think it's appropriate to have sexual relationships with their students. Thankfully, a woman and her young daughter who'd been in the waiting room before had already left, or that would have made the situation more uncomfortable. I asked why she thought it was so many, and if this was something she normally brought up with her customers who were educators. She explained that since I'm a man on the younger side (30) that she wanted to "grill me" as I'd know best. I told her as simply as I could that I thought such incidents have always occurred, but that we're finding out more often because of technology and media coverage, and gossip, and that hopefully she wouldn't let a few horrible people affect her opinion of all teachers. I'm not sure what made this woman think this was an appropriate topic to bring up at her workplace with a paying customer, but I've already begun to steer others in my neighborhood who referred me to A.L.O. away, and will do the same with my co-workers once the school year starts again. read more

Nice people! A dog broke the sunglass "clip ons" to my glasses. A different dog had destroyed my $600 Stars in Your Eyes prescription sunglasses a few weeks earlier. That wouldn't be a problem except that the sun has finally come out in Austin and I had no sun protection for my eyes. I thought that I could just waltz in to Stars in Your Eyes and my problems would be solved. Not so - the only optician was still at lunch at 1:15 and the dollars that I have previously spent there meant nothing to the receptionist - left alone to deal with the public. So the next day I went to Anderson Lane Optical with limited expectations. It took the gracious lady a while to fix my $90 clip ons, but fix them she did - and for free! My wallet has a long memory. read more

Doctor was great, most doctors say I have some of the worst vision they've ever seen and I end up having to pay ~$400 for a box of contacts. This doctor managed to get some Acuvue contacts that work great and now I only pay $30 a box. I'll never go anywhere else. read more

I was very disappointed with the quality of service I got from these people. I chose to try them because i figured that I would rather give my money to a small business as opposed to a national chain. They were very undeserving of this decision. I had the absolute worst customer service experience I have ever had. I have been a receptionist for 12 years. If one of my staff treated a customer the way they treated me, I would toss them out on their butt. When I came in for my appointment, There was no "Hi how are you today?". No "How may I be of service to you today"? I stood there and waited about 10 seconds for the receptionist to acknowledge me. She was doing something on the computer that obviously was more important. She never smiled. She just asked me "Last name"? I gave her my last name . "First name"? I gave her my first name. "Fill this out. Have a seat over there". Very robotic. Very RUDE. This was the same person who performed my pressure tests and such. There was an elderly lady ahead of me. This employee escorted this old lady into the room for her tests, then a minute or two later, the employee steps out of the room in the middle of the exam to answer her cell phone, and just left the poor old lady in the room by herself. Again, I would have slapped that damn phone out of her hand if she worked for me. I was there for almost two hours. No idea why things took so long. The exam itself was routine. The doctor said very little. At the end of the visit, the same rude person checked me out, took my money, and said that they would call me when my contacts came in, which would be in a week.....Two weeks passed and still no call. So I showed up to see what was taking so long. The lady behind the desk asked me if I had been called to picked them up and I said no, that it had been two weeks since I had been there and that nobody ever called me. She looked completely confused. Here is the absolutely laughable part, it turns out that I was never called, because my contacts were never ordered. They were never ordered, because they had been in stock the whole time!!!! I could have walked out with my contacts in hand, if those morons actually knew what they had in stock. I don't trust these people with my eye care. Long story short, these people are absolutely miserable at their jobs and it shows. They are unhappy and it shows. They are incompetent and it shows. EYEMASTERS HERE I COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I scheduled my exam in early June with Jeanette to see Dr. Schaper in July. Upon arrival on the day of my exam I was told that Dr. Schaper was not in and that I would be seeing Dr. Hearne. I went ahead with the appointment because I had waited so long; Dr. Hearne turned out to be very nice, but not very thorough. I feel I should have been contacted and informed that the doctor I had scheduled to see would not be there: this is a common professional practice in all the doctors' offices I have ever been in. The reception staff ignored me and did not assist me with glasses; I had planned on buying a pair, but since I received no assistance, I did not. I feel my money for he exam was wasted here. I am glad I did not spend more on a pair of glasses; the staff's incompetence did help me in that aspect. Bottom line, they get a thumbs down from me, I don't plan on going back. read more

I drove 45 minutes to this place because my insurance suggested it. I got to my appointment 10 minutes early only to be told I was 20 minutes late. I KNEW that was incorrect because I went over it 3 times after I wrote it down with the person I made the appointment with. I have a blind autistic child with whom I have been making appointments for monthly (sometimes weekly) since she was 3 months old, I have learned to ALWAYS triple check because being late and made to wait or being too early can be a nightmare. The front people were VERY rude to me about it and told me to fill out the paperwork "you will just have to wait until we get to you" , I had 4 kids with me. After waiting about 30 minutes I inquired about how much longer it would be, I was told maybe 15 to 20 more minutes, seeing as the place was practically empty I didn't get it. I got frustrated and basically told them "look, I know my appointment time was correct as I had it" then told them about my daughter. One of the ladies literally rolled her eyes at me and gave me a dirty look because well, she was on the phone and just was too bothered to let me complain about my appointment being messed up to her co worker with whom I was speaking to. Her Co-Worker was very apologetic and saw to it we got right in but the other lady was rude the rest of the time we were there, always giving dirty looks when I looked her way. She was probably one of the most bitter human beings I have ever met. If it weren't for the fact that the Optometrist seemed to be on top of things and pleasant enough I would have completely walked out. My idea about this place is that they cater to older people and not children, they have NO CLUE how to deal with children and are in no way set up to handle children. So beware, I wouldn't take kids to this place! Once we pick up our glasses I will never walk back in again. Worst customer service experience EVER! read more
