It seems like there's a general consensus that this place is excellent; my review is no different. Therefore, I will try to specify on the slices that I have tried: Spicy chicken slice - my favorite, and The Girlfriend's second favorite. Although the ranch and pizza combo is a bit greasy, it tastes great. Not particularly spicy, but still my first choice. Margarita slice - The Girlfriend's favorite. In her words (or, so I have paraphrased from memory - hopefully still accurate), the sauce tastes great, and the slice isn't oily/heavy, which is a plus. She wonders why they don't make pasta with the sauce; I guess she really likes it. Chicken bacon ranch/bacon chicken ranch/bacon chicken ranch etc. etc. with all its permutations (I can't recall what the sign read) - similar to the spicy chicken slice except without the spicy and with the bacon. Equally great, just a little too samey in terms of taste and greasiness between the ingredients, so I prefer the spicy chicken. Chicken tomato slice - my personal "dark horse". I'm not a fan of tomatoes on pizza slices, but this one takes the cake (or the pie, am I right? sorry). This would probably be my go-to slice if I didn't have a bias towards anything spicy. Pizzas great but the tall guy that handles the pizza is disgusting. His nails are dirty and I've seen him throw out garbage and go right back to handling pizza with no gloves. I really wanted to like this place and the reviews are excellent so how could I go wrong. The place is nice and clean and pretty busy. The gentlemen behind the counter are friendly and pleasant. We ordered a Grandma pie and a half chicken bacon ranch and half olive pineapple and mushroom. The Grandma pie was good but not great. It was much flatter than the grandma pies I'm used to but it was good so I can over look that. The chicken bacon ranch had great flavor even better than my go to spot for chicken bacon ranch the problem was the chicken wasn't fresh and it was chewy. The other half which was the pineapple olive and mushroom was terrible. I am not a fan of canned mushrooms and it was my fault for not asking ahead of time but then I realized instead of olives they put onions on my half. Uggh but we were already home and so I pushed through. This half of pizza had no flavor at all. The pineapples were not sweet and even the onions had no flavor :( We also had upset stomach all night (3 people). I gave 2 stars for great customer service when ordering and cute clean place for a pizza shop. read more

I'm firmly of the belief that Long Island pizza catches a bad rap, the only time I feel slighted by it, is when I have to plan for travel time in an effort to obtain it. VIP pizza has been banging out a full traditional pizzeria menu from this location for seven years, their second of two locations. First litmus test has always been the 'Ole 1 & 1' and I'm not talking free throws. Out they came super fast, super hot -- I missed the license plate of the oven that singed me, patience has never been my strong suit. The crust for the regular slice cast no crumbs, I checked my lap twice too be sure -- a definate trademark of Long Island pizza. But the sauce really impressed me, just a pleasure to have in your mouth and easily could (should & probably Is) put too good use in the dinner menu. The Sicilian slice bearing the same cheese and sauce and crumbless crust, was nicely designed and rolled out to be low profile. Meaning that the dough didn't take over as the dominant ingredient. First of all, after reading prior reviews mentioning how RACIST this pizza shop is, confirms how I felt while being there. I debated whether to leave a review or not but decided to do so in order for future customers to know the environment they're walking into. While waiting to pay for my slice I noticed there was a small business card type message carefully taped(from their side of the counter). It had info on how to access an uncensored, no monitored chat site called INSTACHAT1. On that taped message you'd find information on how you can share your opinions and thoughts without judgment and censorship. I found this strange just thinking about all of the potentially racist and predatory conversations that may be taking place there. I noticed the pizza guy had noticed I was reading the card and he just stood there watching me as I reviewed it. I walked to my table and noticed the tv was min FOX News at a very high volume. As a Hispanic, I'm sitting there listening to views on immigration, Joe Biden's administration etc. I felt it was done purposefully as before the volume was low and you barely realized what was on the tv. Clearly this is a republican establishment AND THATS OK! But what I don't like is walking into a business and having to deal with their political views shoved down my face. It creates division, and quite frankly maybe in a pizza shop setting it would've been more appropriate to play something neutral and maybe muted? It's a complete turn off to walk into a business who's clearly wanting you to know what their political views are. After that I couldn't even finish my pizza. I left out of there and won't come back. I won't give my money to an establishment that clearly has an issue with people of color, immigrants etc. What's ironic is that these people are here owning a pizza shop because their ancestors from ITALY immigrated here as well. Got the Upside Down Pizza to go. Great slice. Great flavors in the sauce, garlicky and herby. Sauce was made well, not like those cookie cutter flavorless sauces at other pizza joints. I could get a little more cheese on the slice but the sauce is the focus on this one. Dough is crunchy and crisp of the bottom, middle is fluffy, chewy and airy. Awesome textural contrast. I don't understand how this place can maintain such great reviews... First, I would like to say this is not my first time here but I gave this place the benefit of the doubt the first time I received rude service so the fact I received the same type of rude service on my second visit just reassures me my opinion from the first trip is accurate. Second, when you order a slice of pizza well done, it does not usually come out looking like a soggy piece of cheese which is exactly what I received along with a puddle of grease. Third, a medium soda should not be smaller than a size small (tall cup) in Starbucks. I understand the prices for their soda are pretty low given a medium size soda is $1.80 but if you're going to say 'medium' then the cup needs to fit the description. I happily provided photos on their yelp page of my disgusting slice of pizza and my so-called 'medium size soda'. Fourth, last but not least, I was in there for over 5 minutes with no one else in there waiting to order and I was completely ignored. A gentleman that came in after me was serviced first and they took the time to say hello to him & chat with him while ignoring me. After they finally decided to acknowledge me, they ask me if I am ordering anything else and when I tried to order my 'medium soda', the gentleman who came in behind me said something and they completely walked away from me mid-conversation to service him. I am not one to assume people are racist but when 2 out of 2 trips I've been there, you seem to prefer to service someone who looks like you over someone who does not, I'm not sure there is another definition for that type of behavior. I used to come here a lot more when I was younger and still in college, so I was wondering how it would fare after not coming by in a decade or so. The bf and I swung by here for a few slices on a Friday night a few weeks ago. The place was pretty packed, but we managed to secure seats and get our food quickly enough. I got one of their grandma onion slices and an upside down slice, while the bf got a plain slice and a grandma slice. I don't think I've ever had one of their grandma onion slices, but I didn't really think the onion added anything to the pizza. However, the upside down slice was great, and the grandma and plain slices were just as good as I remembered. The whole place is an old school pizza joint, and their pizzas seem to have not changed too much since they had first opened. I'm glad to see that this place still exists and continues to consistently churn out their good pies. I hope it's still around for many years to come. read more

I pretty much only order 2 things. Sicilian slice and/or spicy chicken slice Sicilian is really its own thing. Soft and delicious. Perfect ratio of cheese to sauce. Unlike any other Sicilian slice. The spicy chicken is basically Buffalo chicken. Drizzled with some blue cheese and topped with crispy buffalo chicken. The spicy sauce is not painfully hot but it reminds you that you have a tongue. Pizza is decent here. I would definitely come here on a regular basis just because it's so close to where I was staying. I love that New York thin slice of a pizza. The plain and pepperoni were pretty good. I wouldn't really go for the all meat one or the one that has ranch on it. I wasn't at all impressed. I would say just stick to the basic. I also recommend walking here because parking seems like a hassle. Oh! And there's a boba place right across the street from here. I'm giving VIPizza five stars, not because it ranks up there with John's of Bleecker or Totonno's but because a) it's so far the best pizza I've had in Queens, and b) it's good old fashioned, true-blue, authentic old school NYC pizza. VIPizza has been operating since 1959 -- meaning, the store has seen Fidel Castro come to power, Alaska and Hawaii become states, the first man-made object reaches Moon, and the Twilight Zone airs its first episode. Now that's old school! The store has that old-school NYC feeling of the larger pizzeria (you know there were some pizzerias that were nothing more than a counter with circle seats? This place looks old-school, but has tables.) A scan of their offerings shows they are definitely not skimpy on toppings, and they have many, many offerings. I wanted to know how good their pizza is, so I opted for their regular slice, which I'll get to in a moment. Unfortunately, they don't take credit cards, which sometimes makes me wonder about unreported income, but there are some restaurants that are so good and successful that missed profit due to lost sales doesn't bother them. They specialize in pizza: They sell pizza, calzone, garlic knots, and nothing else. Since this is 2015, and not 1980, they do offer the modern stuff like grandma slices, spicy chicken toppings, etc, but I prefer to review the base of their offerings, which in the pizza world is a "regular slice", the kind you used to get for fifty cents in 1980. Regular slice: A- A common complaint I have about modern NYC pizza is the cheap and tasteless mozzarella. You bite into the slice and get a mouthful of flavorless oily gummy cheese. Yuck. The mozzarella at VIPizza has great flavor. Tastes very fresh. The pizza has a little oil drip, but not overly much. I wouldn't call it an oily pizza. Pointing my pizza downward, I only had 2-4 drops, which is pretty good. The tomato sauce is old-school NYC: fresh and dynamic but slightly bland. I would've liked to have a slightly more punchy tomato flavor. On the other hand, the tomato sauce was definitely *not* sweet, which is something I've come to hate about modern NYC pizza. The ratios of cheese to sauce and sauce to crust is perfect. They have obviously been perfecting that for over 50 years, because I don't think it can get more perfect. The crust is obviously fresh. It's a no-brainier that they make the dough there on the premises. The under crust is very thin. The outside crust is also thin (a pet-peeve of mine is the big "fluffy" outer rim crust you see on pizzas from abominations like Domino's). In fact, I daresay that the crust here is nearly perfect for this type of pizza. My one complaint is that the crust is a little too crusty when they take it out of the oven. When you fold the pizza in half, it cracks a little too much. I think this indicates their oven temperature might be too high for warming pizza. But it doesn't really matter because everything else is so perfect. read more

Taken me forever to post this, but in our quest to review the best and the worst of Bayside, I'm finally getting to it! This place is a solid 4-stars. Lots of nostalgia for lots of folks in the area and when you visit this place, you can understand why. Tons of photos of celebrities on the wall and you can tell there's alot of history behind this place and the guys who work here. I must admit, beyond the rave reviews, I was a little hesitant to come here since I know that "Baysiders" love their nostalgia and hold onto it for dear life. So I wasn't sure if I was being misled. We ordered a pretty tricky pie to successfully execute....half extra cheese and half no cheese with sauce and pepperoni (due to a cheese allergy). As you can see, from the photo, it was truly a work of art. The crust was delicious, crisp, and a bit chewy. A little on the dark side, but not burnt. The sauce too was solid and had a very authentic taste. And the cheese was gooey, stretchy and plentiful. As for the side without cheese (sauce and pepperoni), from what I tasted, it was pretty delicious as well. This pizza also reheated very well the next day and it seemed to get even better with age. Very good NYC Pizza, here in the heart of Bayside, Queens. I had the opportunity to get back to the home borough with my favorite cousin who is just THE most passionate person about food in the world. He loves this place and I can see why. The pizza is excellent and the service is even better. I asked for my usual, Very Well Done Pizza and (for a change) the young gentleman got it right. My slice were nice and dark. The best part of my visit came when I was alone at my table. A grizzled, gruff typical New Yorker came up to me, looked me very seriously and unsolicitedly said (with the same passion that my cousin possesses), "the regular is exquisite today!" as if he was describing a particular year and vintage of fine wine. The slice. It was amazing. Sauce was perfect, the bottom had the desirable slightly charred crisp. The cheese (great cheese btw) was melted perfectly into the dough. I wish I was hungrier so I could sample more. Sicilian slice, grandma slice, whatever you call it. Cheese on top of dough, and sauce on top, that's what I came for. This is better than L&B.
