I have eaten at this restaurant many times for work, family and friend gatherings. It was always one of my favs till last night. I ordered the special, soft shell crab franchise. The crabs still had the cartilage attached. It was completely inedible plus the crabs were not cleaned at all. When I spoke with the waiter he was very rude and told me you eat all of it because that's how it's cooked. He finally sent the food back and I was able to reorder something else. My daughter ordered chicken in tomato and wine sauce. She received veal that was incredibly chewy. There were flies all over the place which made the experience so much worse. With all these issues the total of the bill was just the cherry on the cake. It was so overly expensive I was better off going to a 5 star in NYC and we skipped coffee and dessert. I usually give restaurants another chance but the way the waiter acted and the flies I will not be going back there again. read more

This establishment is one fine place to dine. Authentic meals and a lot of specials. Had a lobster special and it was delicious. Garlic soup was not creamy as anticipated but was still a tasty treat. I watched as the waiters brought other people's food out too and all of the other meals that exited the kitchen looked pretty darn good too. Definitely would recommend for a night out. read more

I ate here for the first time last night a d I was not impressed. Service was fine but the food was not great. I had the shrimp and garlic appetizer and it lacked seasoning and overall flavor. The shrimp were not cleaned. I had the paella valenciana. Nice presentation but not great ether. Definitely not fresh seafood. Sangria was just ok. I don't want to sound like a big complainer bit I'm just used to good Portuguese valid from the iron bound section of Newark. That's where I would recommend to go read more

The food was very good, portions are very large and sangria is not your usual, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The vegetarian paella was very good, lobster was cooked to perfection. On the table they give you sides to go along with your dishes, Spanish rice, potatoes and vegetables. I will definitely come back. read more

I was truly disappointed in Villa Verde. I had a rare occasion to go out to dinner alone with my parents last night while visiting from out of town. It was so loud we couldn't hear each other, it was freezing (so if you do go bring a sweater) and the service was terrible (including 15 minutes before our drink order was taken and sitting with plates in front of us for thirty minutes after we were done). We'd planned to have coffee and dessert but no one ever asked and we couldn't get our waiter's attention no matter how we tried. We all agreed we won't be going back. read more

This place is amazing. I used to go with my family for special occasions, but now that I moved 5 minutes away I have been there twice in the last two weeks. I have never had a bad dish there. All of the meals come with amazing side dishes of homemade potato chips, yellow saffron rice, and delicious grilled vegetables. The bread and olives that they give you to start are great, too. You can't go wrong with any of the fish or veal options. They have great appetizer and entree specials, and the service is fantastic. The waiter remembered exactly what I ordered the last time I was there, and he gives great recommendations. The portions are really big with all of the sides so don't go crazy ordering appetizers unless you want leftovers. Also, there's additional parking across the street if their lot is full. I can't imagine anyone giving this place a bad review. I've been there literally dozens of times. It's casual (you can go without a reservation), yet pleasant looking, with a nice bar and outstanding service. The Spanish/Portuguese food is better than that you find in the Ironbound section of Newark. The potatoes aren't greasy and the seafood is delicious. The best thing is the consistency! We have never had a bad meal, whether it was a small table or a huge group with kids. We even had a great meal on New Year's Eve, and that's unusual! I've never tried a non-seafood item, but I'd be willing to be they're good. read more

First time there on Friday night. The best part, as always, is being with my grandson...a 15year old Foodie. Excellent service...not smothering, not invisible. The blue point oysters on the half shell were on point!!! Deliciously fresh, ice cold plate, just excellent. My grandson's dessert was crème brulee, which was simply wonderful. Just an excellent, homemade dessert to finish the meal. There were a couple things with the meal that could have been improved...hence the 4 stars not 5. Took the mom here for Mother's Day and made reservations, they had great service , great food , the sangria was okay , was looking forward to the " best sangria" but I think don pepes has them beat. conveniently close to home, my girlfriend and I go here for many occasions. we always order the garlic shrimp, it's definitely their specialty. tonight we ordered the steak on the specials, a 36 oz..it was probably 20oz of bone and fat, very disappointing. It also came out verrrryyyy rare in the middle (ordered medium rare) the bread is just plain bread, pretty blah, not worth wasting your appetite on. the red sangria is probably the best around, great flavor and strong!! overall a 3 until they get better cuts of steak and cook it a little better, maybe try a reverse sear. read more

Awesome authentic Spanish restaurant! The food is delicious I've never had a bad meal, their very consistence. Service is phenomenal, staff is very friendly and remembers me every time I go. I highly recommend the garlic shrimp appetizer, I can literally eat the whole dish it's so tasty. The lobster and steak is awesome. Drink prices are very reasonable as well as the menu prices. Great service and tasty dishes... unless you have a problem. Then, prepare to be treated rudely. We paid over $110.00 for two 2 pound lobster take out dinners and appetizers. One lobster came with a huge hole in it's big claw. Looked like it had been shot. All the meat in that giant claw was soggy and riddled with black spots. It was truly disgusting. For the past 30 years I've spent lots of time in Maine eating lobster. Damaged ones like that have the damaged claw removed and are used for lobster roll meat, sold with one claw at a discount or are used in bisque. They are never sold to be eaten. Both men there raised their voices as the (rudely) insisted that they always serve them like that. Just completely untrue and if you were dining in you would never be served a lobster in that condition. For $40 I expect and deserve edible, top quality seafood. The garlic shrimp appetizer and paella were enjoyable, but nothing to rave about. The sangria was good, but not so great that we'll be returning anytime soon. My Wife Surprised me for a Birthday dinner hear. I was very excited because I love Portuguese/Spanish food. This rest delivered with excellent food and the Sangria was great. The location is ideal for us since we moved to Pompton Lakes, the food is on par with the rest in Newark's Iron Bound.Waiter was ok and not the friendliest but the food made up for that. i have been here on many occasions and have never been disappointed, there is a bar area that is not in the dining room which is nice when there is entertainment. Its a great date spot and is not noisy or overcrowded so you can converse and enjoy the evening while enjoying an awesome meal. I've been a customer here for years. If you live in the area & you have not been, you must try this place. The staff is always attentive & friendly. So much so, that during our waiter's reading of the evening's specials after he announced a specific appetizer (fried octopus to be exact) he paused himself to overhear that in fact they were apologetically just out of the appetizer. My date & I were disappointed as this is a personal favorite of ours', but no worries, we understood. Later, when they brought out our appetizers, voila! The waiter made arrangements on the house to bring us some of the octopus out. What a treat! Last is the food, delicious! Best paella around and I don't believe there is an entree I've ordered to which I haven't been absolutely satisfied. Order some sangria, it's very good and they bring out a nice sized pitcher to share in. Last, the cost of a dinner will run you a few dollars, but it is well worth the price. I recently went to Vila Verde last week for the first time 3/3/17. I was not impressed by the quality of the food. The rice tasted like instant rice. The texture was water-down and the flavor was bland- I'm Spanish and I know how a good home made rice should taste like. The potato chips were not from real potatoes. They were from a bag. I ordered a steak. It was very big but the quality was poor; It was way under cooked, no flavor, stringy, fatty and very expensive. The vegetables was the only thing I was able to eat. The portions are generous but the quality of the food that my husband and I ordered was poor. read more

We asked the waiter 5 times about the status of our food. Eventually the waiter told us that they messed up in the kitchen and did not get our order he had put in. The owner came over and offered us a salad or dessert for the inconvenience... we did not care to wait for more food. Our meal should've been comped. We have been regulars at this restaurant. My family dined at Vila Verde for the first time and I can't say enough good things about it. The waitstaff was wonderful and the food was amazing! Our waiter asked us what kind of food we might be in the mood for and then proceeded to make a few recommendations. Each of us decided to choose a recommended dish: For appetizers: [shrimp in garlic, stuffed baked clams casino, and mozzarella with roasted red peppers and prosciutto] For dinner: [stuffed salmon, rack of lamb, t-bone steak (34oz!) and lobster 2-3.5 lb] Everything was delicious, and the sangria was the best I ever had. I really wanted to like this place but it just didn't do it for me. I felt like I was in a catering hall. Portions were ridiculously huge but the flavor wasn't quite there. We had a cheese and prosciutto appetizer but the ham was too cold, flavorless. And instead of paper thin slices was cut in thick unappetizing slabs. My companion enjoyed his duck entree but my paella was disappointing. No crust, mushy rice, and over cooked seafood. I was expecting Ironbound but it just didn't deliver. Went to Villa Verde for New Years Eve. Had a 7:30 reservation and when I arrived the bar area was knee deep in people waiting to be seated. Some had 6:30 reservations and were still waiting! Obviously they overbooked! We waited an hour to be seated. My husband ordered Paella his favorite. He said it was not edible. Very fishy. with sticky hard rice. I ordered Filet Mingion which was ok. I know it was a big holiday night but very disappointed in how they handled the reservations. read more

My wife and I wanted to go out for a nice dinner Saturday night close to home (Wayne) . We called Villa Verde in advance and made a reservation for 8pm to be safe. We arrived at restaurant at 7:50 checked in because we think of our reservation as an appt. and I like to be prompt. We waited until 8:15 and checked with young lady taking names and she said just a few more minutes . I asked her if they actually took my reservation or is it first come first serve, she replied yes we had a reservation .As we were waiting we saw 2 couples leave and a few groups of 4 as well. We waited until 8:45 paid valet and then left. . We will never return to this place. If they are gonna take a reservation they need to take them seriously . read more

Came very early on a Thursday, so early, in fact, the lights were off! But we were greeted by a very nice man, who promptly seated us next to the window. We ordered some house cabernet, very nice. Fried calamair, pretty typical. Salad with white asparagus, not a huge fan. BUT, then out came the chicken pieces in garlic sauce..delicious! We split it and still wound up with leftovers!
