Wow. So did not expect this restaurant in a small NJ town. Passed it on the way back to my friends house; asked if she ever tried it, even though I knew she say no. I ordered Camarones (Shrimp) with sautéed onions and peppers in a light tomato sauce. It came with both potatoes and rice. My friend ordered chicken francais. Her chicken (3 filets) came with mashed potatoes. It was fork tender Not only was this food outstanding, each dish could easily have fed two or three people. Not knowing that I had fried calamari to boot. Served with warm marinara sauce, as it should be Too bad I'm only visiting, there is much on the menu I'd love to try Good service, good atmosphere once you get inside. Garlic shrimp, garlic shrimp, garlic shrimp! For years my wife has told me how good the garlic shrimp is at Spain Rincon, and last night I got to see for myself. It was outstanding! The spice and the sauce was so good, especially for bread dipping when the shrimp was gone. As far as everything else with the restaurant, not too impressive. I was warned that from the outside the place looked like a dive, and the inside wasn't much better. That didn't bother me. What did bother me was that we felt rushed through the entire meal. This on a night when there were only a couple of other tables with customers. Besides the shrimp, the rest of the food was good, although not as impressive. Your meal comes with complimentary soup which was nice. Last night it was chicken noodle. For entrées, I had the stuffed scallop special and my wife had chicken francese. Plates of rice and potato chips are served on the table. We also had a small pitcher of sangria which was pretty weak. My recommendation is to stop here for takeout shrimp and go home and enjoy it with a nice bottle of wine! read more

They give tasty complimentary soups upon arrival (varies). We've tried their beef dishes, shrimp in garlic sauce, chorizo, paella, and sangria - all have been delicious! Updating this review as the last few times I went here it's gotten worse & worse. The soup is always great, nice bread, & we like to order a bottle of Spanish wine. Service is always great but the food unfortunately has gone downhill. The garlic shrimp app is delish - definitely a must order. The parrillada which I always order has gone downhill - the seafood on it is A LOT less than what it used to be & the sauce has totally changed which means the chef has changed & not for the better. The interior is dumpy & I will never order the sangria as I watched them make it one night & there is hardly any alcohol in it. Food is pretty good. I got a chicken and shrimp dish then was delicious. They give nice size portions. Prices are reasonable. We love their sangria!!!! Of course it's always better to eat in but we had a long day and got take out which is just as good. I would recommend getting there early because it's not a very big place. read more

Ate here on a recent Saturday night with another couple. It was a stormy night and it wasn't that busy in the restaurant. Service was prompt. Ordered a pitcher of sangria. My wife and sister in law said it was good. Ordered Portuguese sausage and garlic shrimp for appetizers. Both were very tasty but both could have been hotter. Appetizers should be piping hot when served. They also give you complimentary lentil soup which was very good as well, but again the temperature of the soup was not hot. They have bread on the table. I ordered filet mignon tips with garlic shrimp. The meat was tender but I don't know what method they use to cook the meat but I don't think it's a professional broiler. See pics. Steak should be charred on the outside. I ordered mine medium rare. The meat was actually like cubes, instead of sliced steak tips. My brother and sister and law ordered the same thing and both said the same thing, the meat wasn't cooked right. My wife ordered filet mignon tips in a mushroom sauce, well done and hers actually looked good. With all that said, I would come again. read more

Had a reservation for three there are note said 2. But they were able to sit us. It took 10 to 15 minutes to gat a waiter to place our drink order, my son order a Miller Lite after 15 minutes we are out of Miller lite. They seem to cater to the big tables, our of 3 was small. Gave this place another try food was good (better than my last try here). The decor though still needs help--inside and out needs some updating. It has a dive bar type of vibe (run down) although that not what they are trying for/certainly not dive bar prices. What concerned me most was the lack of a working woman's room. Literally there was a hole in the floor where toilet was and there was no signage alerting you about the situation. What happened to this place, last time I went I got the paella, it was not good. This time I got the veal Marsala and filet medallions, not good, Veal was chewy, even the rice was a bit gritty. Had the stuffed scallops, paella, flan and Tiramisu. This was my 3rd visit. Service was excellent however I thought the paella lacked some flavor. The tiramisu was way better than the flan. The give you soup and bread gratis which I think is nice. read more

So a colleague recommends Spain Rincon to me for dinner one day. I look it up on yelp and the overall rating is good so I think "What the hay, I'll make a go of it." I'll agree that the place is well, misplaced but I wouldn't say out of the way. Get off exit 35B from route 80 and you'll be there in 5 minutes only turning the steering wheel once or twice. It is surrounded by private houses and a soon to be masonry supply, so unless you live in that hood, there is nowhere to walk to in order to stretch your legs after a meal. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, and seeing the old weather wooden door doesn't do much to help. I was met in the vestibule by the greeter, who held the inner door open and welcomed me in. In front of you is the bar area, which looked relatively small and a bit dark. I was dining for one and given the opportunity to choose bar or dining room. I chose a small table in the back of the dining room. The whole dining room probably only holds 40 people or so. At helf full the dining room noise is very low and pleasant. Once it gets to 3/4 full, the noise level gets a bit more out of hand. Since I was by myself I didn't get to see what it was like holding a conversation at this noise level but I imagine it would take a bit of effort to be heard at your own table once the place fills up. Something of note, if you are prone to have illicit affairs this could be a place for you. The main parking log is obscured from view from the street, the lighting inside is dim to dark (it actually flickered a few times while I was there) and the noise level will likely obscure your conversation enough to prevent effective eavesdropping. Onto the meal: House soup was a chick pea soup in a chicken broth some veggies and light pasta. The whole soup was rather thin and lacked any heartiness. some scraps of meat could have made this a little nicer, but in the end, no harm no foul. Two stars for the soup. I had the Spanish Prosciutto Ham appetizer. This was the saltiest meat I have ever tasted, not sure if it's made in house but the curing needs to be dialed down a bit. I could only imagine this is what Bedouins packed as they traveled the dessert. (Do Bedouins eat pork?) Anyway the meat itself had a nice texture and was thicker sliced than I would have expected. Two stars for the appy as well. For dinner I went with one of the specials, pork chops and shrimp. The porch chops seem to be broiled in a tomatoey sauce with shrimp tossed on top. This too was overly salty to my taste. I found the only way to cut the salt was to mix it in with the yellow rice on the same forkful. There is plenty of food so two people could have easily shared all these plates. Judging by the doggie bags I saw others leaving with, this could probably be said for many menu items. You guessed it, two stars Two Accoutrements, the bread soft and spongy. I had one piece and left the rest for the birds. Kettle Chips, not from potatoes (to my mind) I think yucca. These were quite fine and tasty. They also helped dull the sharpness of the salt. Three stars for the chips, one star for the bread. So this adds up a straight two star experience for me. Opinions will differ, but I couldn't get past the salt, it was wicked sharp. A final closing/interesting point. When I was leaving a noticed what looked to be a vegetable plot out back. Maybe they grow their own vegetables??? I didn't see anything sprouting at the time but it certainly looked like a garden. The only vegetable on any of my plates were some asparagus (not a fan) so I didn't try it. Be interested to see if anyone has some good news about vegetables there. read more

Okay so after reading all the reviews here I decided to take a chance. First let me say I planned to come here with my Fiancee and my son. I was here an hour earlier. I parked my car outside and in a matter of fifteen mins I had two people looking at me suspiciously and then apparently one of the two people works there so he brings out two waiters with him to check me out in my car. That was uneasy but I held on for another ten mins. Then decided to go in and wait for my guests and have some appa and drinks. I have to say, I ordered the shrimp in garlic and stuffed mushrooms and they were delicious. Then ordered two wines and they were also delicious. I am now still waiting for my party to arrive 45 mins later and all o can say is that the waiters are gracious and very attentive. I don't feel rushed at all as everyone keeps saying in the reviews. I feel welcomed and I'm looking forward to dinner. Will update when done. read more

Almost like the soup nazi. They have the best bread and the soups are a must. The sangria is the best I have ever tried. This place can't be denied when you see things like the owner enjoying a meal like a regular patron. Now the atmosphere looks like a scene from the movie Donnie Brasco but this adds to the character and authenticity of the place. Now I have not tried every menu item but I have to say that I stand behind the Shrimp and Garlic and the Beef Tips with Shrimp 100%. No need to travel to Newark for Portuguese Food ever! read more

Their food is very good. Don't let the exterior fool you. The restaurant is relatively small. Extensive menu, excellent service. Prices are pretty standard. They do have a kids menu and chicken tenders which is a lifesaver for my family. My favorite dish is their garlic shrimp dinner. It's amazing! I'm fan of garlic chicken so while in the area i figured I'd try this place out. The chicken was boneless and sitting in a soup like container of garlic soup per say. The amount given was very good however the flavor was nor as good as other places I been to. I believe it should of been cooked on the bone which gives it more flavor and it would of been more tender. It also should have been garlic soup not soup which clearly was mixed with water. Which takes away from the flavor. The food wasn't bad but nor foos enough for me to return. read more

It seems there may be new owners, the food is just as good as it was previously generous portions. The lighting was changed so it is brighter. The restrooms have been refinished and it seems a bit cleaner. They are still getting a few bugs out of the service but no harm done. read more

I am a 20-25 year customer of this place. Always enjoyed the food here over the years. Decor was never great, but the food was always good. Went here the other day and we ordered our standard dishes, chicken in garlic sauce and paella. The chicken was extremely dry and over cooked. The inside was pure white. Over the years, the chicken had been sautéed absorbing the garlic sauce inside the chicken. It was delicious. This time seems like a rush job with sauce poured over the chicken and simmered briefly. The paella had the shells of the mussels cracking into pieces when picked up and were overcooked, clams were not great along with the very dry and over cooked chicken pieces as well. Prices have gone up which is understandable given the pandemic, however, how can the owners let the quality suffer. Unfortunately, this was probably the last time I will have gone as I can't see spending my money on increased prices and poor quality. It was a good run, but I will no longer go back. I visited Spain Rincon yesterday, based on all the positive reviews and my positive experience with little hole in the wall places. I had a craving for some good paella. First, in my opinion, this place is not on par with Newark's Iron Bound restaurants. I've had great paella in Newark, not the case here. The paella, though nicely presented with lots of sausage, chicken and seafood, was somewhat bland. The chicken was dry and the fish (lobster, scallops, clams, muscles and shrimps) were overcooked. Some of my clams did not open. It was lacking something more than flavor. I was very disappointed. I also left with a bad headache. Before my food had arrived, I was given a thick broth of some sort (waiter did not know what it was) that had spinach and bits of what appeared to be salami. It was pretty tasty, though a bit too salty. The appetizers -- stuffed mushrooms and clams on the half shell -- were good. The place itself is a hole in the wall. It is very small as is the parking lot. It is in the middle of a neighborhood, on the corner of a somewhat busy road (Mt. Hope Avenue) depending on when you go. The inside is about the size of a large living room. It has a small patio with outside seating for the warm months. There are no windows and the lights kept flickering. This had me concerned so I doubt I'll ever sit inside again. If you are claustrophobic this will not be the place for you. I may return in the future to try their other dishes, but not until the summer so that i can sit outside. PS: The waiters were pleasant and the noise level was very high. Hard to have a conversation. UPDATE: I visited again on Wednesday, November 1, at a friend's request. This time the food was much better, minus their red Sangria, which I did not like. We started with their black bean soup of the day, which was good. I had the Mariscada (seafood) with salsa verde (green sauce), which was delish, it had lobster, scallops, mussels, clams and lots of shrimp. The fish was cooked perfectly, but, WARNING: lots of butter! It came with yellow rice on the side, which was very good and flavorful. We also ordered some pork and clam special, which was stewed pork w/clams. Came with cut up potatoes and some pickled cauliflower. It really was good. We also ordered the Portuguese clams, which were good, but tasted like regular middleneck clams. Maybe the way it's made is Portuguese. It all came with their popular potato chips. Those were okay. They were bland and a bit oily for me. My bad for not putting salt, just didn't know I had to. Just honestly don't understand why folks go bonkers over these, but I guess to each his/her own. So overall, everything was really good. However, still a bit too salty for me. I would go back again, once I get all this salt out of my system. I love the salt shaker, so when I say the food was salty, it was. PS: Correction: they do have a window, albeit one small one. Their lights kept flickering again so I made sure I stayed close to the door. Oh, and the price for all we had was $76, which is decent and there were left overs! read more
