Came to Solar Do Minho for the first time for a late lunch/early dinner at 3pm on Saturday. It was pretty much empty until later on around 5pm. They had valet parking, and there is some street parking. Street parking might be a little difficult when it is busy. I did not see what the other side looked like, but the tables were all able to see the cooks cooking the meat, and the seating area was not so big. My table ordered a few dishes including ribs, churrasco mixto, fix, and soup. 3 of us also got the rodizio. It took about 40 minutes for the food to come out. Overall the food was good and came in big portions. The chips that came with the fish were a bit soggy. The rodizio included a large variety, which we did see all of the options until more people started coming in after us. The rodizio came with fries, rice, and a fried banana. Every cut of meat was flavorful and tender. The only tough one was the filet mignon, and the chicken was dry. It was interesting that they asked each of how we would like our meat to be cooked (I ordered medium), despite it all coming out only how one person asked (my brother asked for it medium rare). I was okay with how it was cooked, but I did not see a point in asking everyone individually if we were all going to get the same ones. When we're paying it was a bit awkward because the waiter insisted that we "lost" the 4th check, but we counted and made sure before we handed it to him.

It's been a while since I came here. Everyone enjoyed their meal. My Gambas were ok. Nothing spectacular. But the fish plates , the othered kept raving about it. Our server was very attentive and had our to go order ready when we left. It wasn't crowded yet for a Sunday.

Came here for lunch with friends and ordered: Paella Valenciana, Octopus with Olive Oil (Polvo a Feira), Skirt Steak (Entranha), Fillet of Flounder, Churrasco Misto. The highlight of the place was the skirt steak. It was amazing, cooked properly, and juicy. The presentation was superb as well. All the portion were big and we had leftover for a party of 4. The ambiance was superb and they allowed and accommodated us having a lovely dog as one of our companions. I'd say amazing service Street parking might be limited but shouldnt stop you from checking out this place and enjoying its food offering. One thing that I disagree on this place is that it didnt allow Rodizio and Picanha to be shared. Perhaps we should come another time and everyone order these dishes...

We have been here twice in two weeks, and we absolutely love it. Three of us get Rodizio and three of us get regular meals. Now let me say that the service is amazing, we have had Larissa both times and she is always happy and ready to help. She is very quick. The Rodizio is prepared specifically for your table and what we really like is that they don't just bring it out fast, they bring it out when your entire party has their food as well. So everyone eats together! The restaurant is nice, well lit, and a full filled atmosphere. I highly recommend! We will be back soon. For reference my 9 year old loves Rodizio never had shrimp before, ate shrimp here for the first time, ate a chicken heart, and everything is full of flavor. Larissa is amazing, and quick to give recommendations. Our party last night who didn't get Rodizio, had pork chops, chicken stew and steak. 100/10 recommend!

Bacalhau à "Solar do Minho" aka cod in red sauce with peppers

Service and venue very nice. Food meh for the price. Ordered the cod fish solar Do Minh which is a giant piece of cod fish deep fried and the. Smothered in red sauce and bell peppers. The sauce excellent. The fish stayed in the deep frier too long and turned to leather. Great concept not great execution.

This southern guy decided to visit Solar Do Minho in Belleville NJ. I ordered the Rodizio and There was so much meat. I thought I ordered a whole cow.! The red sangria was flavorful, fruity and well balanced. The chocolate mousse was chocolatey and as light as heaven and the espresso was made perfectly.! I will be visiting this restaurant in the near future!!! My waitress Bianca was excellent and provided me with great service!!!

The accoutrement from the Rodizio - A meal featuring rice with fried fish, French fries, black bean soup, and baked beans on a table at a Portuguese restaurant.

We hit Solar Do Minho last night for my 50th birthday and they did not disappoint. Luckily we got there just in time as we did not have reservations and it got crowded very quickly. This is at 7pm on a Thursday evening. We started with a pitcher of sangria. It was very well made and the amount they give you seemed bottomless. The pitcher is huge. My wife and I never have a problem taking care of a pitcher of sangria and this just seemed to never stop flowing. For an appetizer, we got the calamari. Excellent with a little spicy marinara sauce on the side. Myself, my wife and our older son got the Rodizio which came with white rice, black beans and yellow rice with red beans. They just keep coming around. Steaks, chicken, turkey wrapped in bacon, Lamb, ribs, sausage. You won't leave hungry. Our youngest got the filet mignon which they finish off on a Portuguese tile at the table with butter and of course for his sides, he opted for a double Order of fries. It looked excellent and very tender and being that he ate it all, it must've been good. For dessert, I went with the dulce de leche and a cappuccino with a shot of 43. How else could you end the night?

Octopus
Michelle O.

Excellent food! My favorites were the pasta with seafood in a white sauce, and the picanha. The paella with seafood and sausage was good too. Octopus appetizer was tender. Skirt steak on the tile was interesting! Order it rare-medium rare as they will keep cooking on the tile. Portions are huge!

Ask the Community - Solar Do Minho

Is there a bathroom in your downstairs seating area?

Yes

Would I need a reservation during the week?

Hello! We always recommend reservations! Please call 973-844-0500. Thank you

Is it BYOB?

They have a full bar. Pretty great selection too.

Is this reservation only? I went around 11:30 and it was closed but it said open till 2 am?

It's not but if you go without one during prime time you could wait good 45 min. I have found its best to just make a reservation in advance.

Shrimp was perfectly cooked and the flavor/texture was robust and unique. The amount was perfect as well. Then for my 2nd course, squid and chourico, which was also so good. Not as good as the shrimp but the portion was pretty good and I was honestly getting full by the end of this. I finished with the duck paella, which was my favorite of the night. It was perfectly crispy while not tasting burnt, with a rich flavor of the duck, sauce, and little peppers combined. Definitely a unique dish - I'm glad I tried it! I sipped on the red sangria and one bottle lasted me the whole meal. It was a good amount and tasted strong and not too sweet! Service was amazing - my server was Amanda. She was super attentive and easy to talk to. My water was always filled and the timing of the food coming out was perfect! The restaurant had a great vibe inside. It was small but not tight. Decor was bright and airy. Seating/tables were clean. Even though their menu changes, it felt like the menu was uniquely curated for an amazing meal!! Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area!

There was a kale salad that was fresh and bright also very good. The quail dish was tender but succulent. The octopus dish was nicely done but if you like it very tender this might not be to your liking as this is prepared with a bit of chew. Overall food was great but portions small. Now these are tapas so if you tend to eat a lot or you skipped lunch you probably will leave still a bit hungry. The prix fix price of 85 is a bit much I thought for the portions (quail was four small pieces, octopus had three pieces) but given the quality I would still go back. Service was good with water filled without being asked and we were asked if everything was good more than once. One thing to note this is is a very small place so the tables are very close. You will definitely hear conversations of your neighbor. So if you prefer more privacy this may be a problem. Tasca is an excellent addition that is unique in Montclair.

The parking was actually full when we arrived, possibly because of the bar using the same lot. But there is an elevated connected lot for the bowling alley that has plenty of parking. I have to say that the best thing about this place is the service: everyone was very friendly, and quick to attend us. Food was great, except maybe the flake fish (first course). Seemed more Spanish to me than Portuguese though. Portions were huge... actually had leftovers from a dish, which is the first for me from a tasting menu. The prices were reasonable In terms of why I'm giving this 4 star instead of 5: -we were seated at the "Chefs counter", but did not really have a view of the prep, which was really far away. Basically could just see the fireplace. The sister restaurant Heirloom is a much better chef's counter setup where you are seeing everything -Dishes seemed to be regular menu type dishes (just smaller portions), as opposed to super interesting types that you would expect from a tasting menu -Beverage pairing was okay... didn't really love the wines For these reasons, I'd likely return, but just stick to the regular menu/ experience.

I've always felt the food has been very good. I have no issues with the quality or quantity of food. Its prepared and served well. It is on the expensive side but you're not coming here for a bargain and I know the cost of food, labor and general overhead has been rising in recent years. I paid a lot but don't feel I was overpaying for what we received. The service is attentive and efficient though I would not characterize it as warm or engaging. There is a vibe of arrogance that comes with it that is difficult to characterize. The examples would seem trivial but cumulatively leave an impression. The location is easy to get to with abundant parking very close . Some of our group is older, with limited mobility, travelling in multiple vehicles so this is a big plus for us versus comparable places where you might be looking for street parking. The one thing that surprises me that I have encountered on more than one occasion is that, even having renovated significantly in recent years, the first thing that hit me last night as I walked in the front door was a strong smell from the bathrooms that permeates the lobby, hostess stand and likely one end of the bar, a huge turn off considering what the place aspires to be. The bathrooms are nicely renovated but smell awful. I don't know what the problem is but it is worthy of investment in better ventilation/frequent cleaning because its a tough first impression. Fortunately the dining room is far away.
