Bacalhau Croquettes

Innovative cuisine, impeccable and warm service, quaint yet sleek design. Bacalhau croquettes light and perfectly salty- monkfish soubise rich yet allowing the fish to stand out. Piri Piri Quail...TO DIE FOR! Generous portion of Quail perfectly cooked with multiple layers from soft and savory to crisp exterior. Piri Piri sauce just the right spice- can't imagine anyone unable to handle the heat, with a Blue cheese sauce delicately on the side to likening self-portion. Offers CA winery selection at reasonable prices yet also BYOB (offsite retail sales outlet as allowed in our beloved Jerz). Def not a taco shop (as labeled here) Double def one of the top spots in an amazing foodie town... thank you Robert for coming to Montclair!!

The parking was actually full when we arrived, possibly because of the bar using the same lot. But there is an elevated connected lot for the bowling alley that has plenty of parking. I have to say that the best thing about this place is the service: everyone was very friendly, and quick to attend us. Food was great, except maybe the flake fish (first course). Seemed more Spanish to me than Portuguese though. Portions were huge... actually had leftovers from a dish, which is the first for me from a tasting menu. The prices were reasonable In terms of why I'm giving this 4 star instead of 5: -we were seated at the "Chefs counter", but did not really have a view of the prep, which was really far away. Basically could just see the fireplace. The sister restaurant Heirloom is a much better chef's counter setup where you are seeing everything -Dishes seemed to be regular menu type dishes (just smaller portions), as opposed to super interesting types that you would expect from a tasting menu -Beverage pairing was okay... didn't really love the wines For these reasons, I'd likely return, but just stick to the regular menu/ experience.

Well, let's get started: We sat down. Water and menus came, a drink order was put in, and before we knew it, bread, olives, and a salad (all unordered, all appreciated) appeared. The bread was warm (as God intended) and the salad nicely done up, already with an Italian dressing. The olives were spicy and yummy! Ok - not ordered, but I wasn't going to argue! We ordered a seafood paella - holy moly! It was like a 14" in diameter deep dish when it came out! Tasty, lots of mussels, shrimps, scallops, even a bit of lobster..... wow. I ordered chicken picatta - expecting thin strips of chicken in a nice sauce on top of pasta....damn. I got two flat, pressed chicken breasts on pasta. Can anyone say too big by half??? Wow. Couldn't finish it. And here's where the "food being thrown to us" came in- we got a side of green beans AND a side of seasoned rice AND a side of homemade potato chips (that needed salt but still). Damn. After declining dessert, they STILL brought us 6 little churros with a dark chocolate dipping sauce. WOW. Call me totally amazed. The pricing wasn't outrageous, and the food was absolutely BOUNTIFUL and yummy! The ambiance was amazing- old school in a classy way. And the service was absolutely ON POINT. Can't speak highly enough of this place! Nicely located in Ironbound and close to Newark Penn - will I come again? Yes. But I'll need room at the hotel for the leftovers! Yummy.

Served al dente with a nice cream / cheese overlay - shrimp in garlic. Very nice flavor with a light garlic and olive oil taste that did not overwhelm the shrimp - rib eye : simply seasoned that really let the meat flavor rise. Rum: they had Zacapa 23 year. A good recommendation to sip along with a tremendous meal. One note: the medium rare was closer to black and blue, and the medium was closer to medium rare. It may depend on the chef, but if you are between temp levels, take the over. I could have come here for dinner every night and been very happy. Plenty of amazing looking items on the menu.

THE GOOD ----------------…read more+ Solid food and pretty fresh seafood. ++++ Parrillada - For the price, a fair amount of mixed broiled seafood - large clams, mussels, a lobster tail and claw, mini scallops and (what looked to be) a filet of sole. All of the seafood was fantastic, except maybe the filet of sole, which tasted a bit tooooo gamey as in ocean gamey. It also came with a side of yellow rice, vegetables and large chips. ++++ Surf & Turf - You can't go wrong with this and the portion was MASSSSIVE with yellow rice, vegetables and large chips mixed in. The 12 oz lobster tail was big and 10 oz of steak is a meal onto itself. Once again, fresh and delicious. The steak was a littttttle overcooked, but still good. ++++ Paella Valenciana - PHENOMENAL! A greaaaat paella. Rice was super delicious and flavorful. Plenty of seafood mixed into the dish and, best of all, as is expected with most paellas, the portion was BIG! ++++ Sides of Roasted Potato and Spinach - Solid sides and there was plenty of both. There was nothing surprising here, but they were good. ++++ Coppa Pistachio - GET THIS!!!! The custard gelato was served in a glass cup with chocolate and pistachio ice cream and praline pistachios. It was addictively good and we totalllly wish we had A LOT more. ++++ Creme Brulee - Solid creme brulee. Can't say we were stunned by any of it, however, it was good. It was definitely on the small side though and should have been larger. + Lots of space and tables inside of this restaurant, including a bar area and outdoor seating patio. + Large private parking lot outside. + Service was quick and food came out fast. + Waiters sang "Happy Birthday" for one of us who's birthday it was. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Unfortunately (or fortunately) they forgot 2 of our appetizers. We ordered it, however, our entrees came out and we informed the waiter that we also ordered 2 appetizers. We ended up cancelling the appetizers, so no harm, no foul, but the waiter I guess forgot to relay the appetizers order to the kitchen. In retrospect, we were kind of thankful it didn't come out because there was so much food in our entrees, so we were able to save some room for dessert ... which was super important! MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = We arrived at 12 PM on the dot on a February Sunday afternoon, which is when they open, so we were the 1st customers of the day, but, we were surprised that the dining room got about half full considering how quiet it was for the 1st 10 minutes after we arrived.

Ok now doe the breakdown Chorizo (5/5) really solid option and the table enjoyed it Lamb chips (5/5) super juicy and tender really flavorful and a great option Broccoli Rabe (1/5) really bland kind of a fail for me sadly Paella (3/5) it is definitely more of a 2 person sharing option if you were only eating this. We had a number of apps and sides so it fed our table well. On its own it was fine but not spectacular in terms of flavor and rice was cooked fine. No major issues just not wow for me personally. Sangria (5/5) really great refreshing and I would recommend the pitcher! Dessert we got the crème brulle which was yum and we also ordered the baklava with iced cream which was delish! Menu is substantial but not overwhelming, value is there and pricing is respectable without breaking the bank. I would come back with an eye towards drinks and apps :)

Checked our reservation and seated us promptly AMBIANCE - very rustic and Sevilla looking. They updated the decor a bit and it's nice. CAPACITY - the place is still small like 30 tables so a reservation will be needed for Friday night and weekends MENU - great choices and appetizers. You are covered for many authentic Spanish dishes SERVICE - great waiter and bus service. Never an empty glass and offered great suggestions for a few of us unfamiliar with Spanish cuisine APPETIZERS - the chorizo was fabulous. The octopus was cooked to perfection. And the shrimp and garlic sauce was amazing ENTREES - the paellas were very good. Many years ago they were a 9 out of 10 for me. I give it an 8 if 10 now. I tried the arroz con pollo which was very good as well. VINO - the Spanish wine by the bottle we tried was very good. They were out of the marquis rascal but the recommendation did not disappoint DESSERT - we had no room for more than coffee. However the list looked great. I'll try the flan next time RESTROOM - although very small, they were very clean and recently remodeled. PRICE - we had a party of 6 with 2 bottles of wine and the bill sans tip was $425.
