I've been eating lunch here for about 15 years and I keep coming back for a few reasons: The food is exceptional; the chicken and ribs are the best in Newark by far, probably the best in the state. The yellow rice is a personal favorite of mine and the portions are always generous. The staff are all very friendly, even when it's busy. I'm always greeted with a smile and taken care of promptly. Cleanliness! I've been to plenty of places in the area and not all of them are concerned about cleanliness and hygiene. Pulaski is always sparkling clean and the staff is constantly cleaning every inch of the place. Prices are very fair and well worth it. I always get more food than I can eat in one sitting for between 10-15 dollars. They recently completed a total renovation of the restaurant and it's beautiful! They've really stepped up their game! Went today warning of your a Caucasian be prepared to get screwed . Waited 20 minutes for my to go order when it was ready they forgot the steak sandwich which of course took another 20 min was not waiting took off without it . Asked for a couple of rolls after spending 125 bucks for lunch said nope no bread . Get home to eat it and had a funky smell , fries are soaked in grease no where near what the old place was . Went here after a day of exploring the ironbound and the waterfront park in Newark. We had the full order of ribs. The flavor was decent, slightly smoky and cooked a bit too much. The sear was excellent but the meat was very dry almost jerky like. The rice and fries were pretty good and well seasoned. Portions were generous. Service was good. The bathroom is very clean. I want to call Pulaski Barbecue a hidden gem, but it's not hidden. I have spent a lot of time waiting in their small space, smelling the amazing food, cash in hand, getting impatient for my turn. The people who run this joint are meat magicians. They take simple food, put it over hot charcoal and turn in into something amazing. My family always gets chicken and ribs. The chickens are smallish, but they absorb whatever the sauce is that gets smeared on while they rotate in their little cage over the heat. The ribs are tender but chewy. These aren't overcooked, fall off the bone ribs. These are caveman worthy, gnaw on the bone ribs, full of flavor. Sometimes we get shrimp and garlic. Sometimes we get picadillo or febras. All of it is good. Oh, and get the garden salad. It's incredibly simple and perfect in its simplicity-- iceburg lettuce, sliced tomatoes, thin sliced onions and black olives, lightly dressed with oil and vinegar. I dream about it. Yes, a garden salad. I drive for 3 hours from Pennsylvania to get this food. The entrees can be accompanied by french fries and yellow rice. The potatoes are handcut and soaked in water before being fried. I love them fresh. They smell and taste amazing. But Pulaski gives you so much, there are always leftovers and I love to reheat these by flash frying them so they get really crispy. The yellow rice is perfect. I've seen their pots on the stove where the rice has expanded over the sides and lifts the lid off. Each grain is perfectly cooked and individual. It's not sticky, or crunchy, or mushy. It is absolutely perfect. (And also reheats really well). My favorite special little touch is that they throw a handful of giardinera (pickled vegetables) and black olives in the tray before they seal it and hand it over to you. It's my favorite part and my sister and I fight over it. Be aware they only take cash but there is an ATM inside. If you try to call and order ahead, you may have difficulty. Pulaski Barbecue is on of about a thousand Portuguese barbecue spots in the iron bound and the food was decent. I ordered the garlic shrimp with the usual yellow rice which also came with fries. I'm not a big fan of the fries with barbecue because even though they are tasty they always get soggy. The shrimp was good....but I am a big fan of garlic and I thought they could have had a bit stronger of a garlic flavor but that is nitpicking I guess. The rice was good too, maybe a little light on flavor but not bad. The prices are very reasonable and the restaurant at looked clean. The parking is horrible but welcome to Newark.....lol. I've been In a newark going on 3 years and this is the only Portuguese BBQ spot you should ever go to. I have ordered the beef short ribs, chicken, and pork ribs. All are always good. The rice is soft and flavorful, the fries are thin and good, and the meats always have a good flavor and cooked well. This spot has soul and that is to me the recipe for success when it comes to a business. The portions are unbelievably large and prices have gone up since all the inflation(who told us to take stimulus and raises). After all it's still reasonably priced for take out since you can easily feed up to 4 people. read more

Good place, I have been here multiple times in the past. Many friends like it here. They have one of the best pork ribs and roasted chicken. The order of combo (includes pork ribs and chicken) is enough for 2. We ordered also with fries, yellow rice, and black beans. Price is reasonable for all the food we get (around $25). There is no designated park area, but street parking is plenty. If I am in Newark, I would consider going there. They also have flan which is great as a dessert. Excellent food! Took a chance since I was nearby and saw all the great reviews. They all speak the truth! I had the pork sandwich with onions and cheese- yum. I wanted to save half for lunch the next day but failed as I could not stop eating. The sauce had a nice sweet savory balance that just worked so well with everything. First of all, finding a BBQ spot in Newark is like shooting fish in a barrel, especially in the Ironbound area. 2 of my boys and I came here with cavemen appetites, as one of them raved about the portions they serve. Upon arrival immediately you can tell its one of those family friendly joints where you can bring lets say a group of 8-12 and be seated almost immediately. We ordered just one combo platter for all of us and we wanted to DIG IN, when we finally got our platter, my friend was right! Been here a few times now for lunch. Food is good and place is clean. I usually get a steak sandwich with fries. The fries are the best part. There are a few things that I don't like about the place. 1. You can't substitute anything. Example: most orders come with rice and fries. Substituting a salad is not an option. 2. I understand it is in the iron bound but only one of the waitresses there speaks a little bit of English. Most of them can't speak a word. This place is even better than what I remember. After moving away 10+years, I came back looking for this place. They moved to a bigger location and making a whole lot more. On weekends, the line is long but worth the wait. The receptionist/cashier doesn't speak much english. Before taking a number, keep in mind who is in front/back of you. That way, if you don't understand what number they're calling, go to the front and show the ticket. They'll take good care of you. First of all, people, it's spelled "Barbecue." Not worth making the correction, but come on, the entire Yelp food category is "Barbeque"? Ugh. Anyway. This is my first Ironbound/Portuguese BBQ experience, and it leaves me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I feel like the meet was drier than I would have liked, and rather salty. On the other hand, the salt made the ribs taste like I was eating bacon off the bone, and the crispy saltiness of the chicken skin gave way to moist, tender meat underneath with a complex myriad of flavors. The rice was also dry and a little bland, but overall fairly well balanced and flavorful. I'm not a fan of having fries with BBQ, understanding that all the places around here seem to serve it, but they were tasty and not very oily; unfortunately, they were mostly limp. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. My overall experience leans 3 stars, but then I think of the flavor, and then I think again of the price - under $40 for four people, including bottles of Brazilian soda. I may have to try a few more BBQ places around here before I settle on the ultimate review. For now, not bad, and it was fun to try something new. read more

The place has not changed much since I was last there. Which is great as there was not much to improve on. My dad went in and out quickly. Which was a surprise because on a Friday evening I thought that we would be waiting a while. We ordered ribs and chicken with rice. It was delicious. I loved everything except for the chicken as it was dry. I don't know if it was sitting in a warmer and overlooked or it was on the grill for too long. I think you just had to be there to choose the "right" chicken. Not a total lost as this cooking style is a type of BBQ that you won't find in the South. No sauce to mask the flavor. I was just driving around Newark looking for a place to sit my fatass down and eat good lol...than I stumbled upon pulaski BBQ...as we all know parking in Newark is horrible...but I got lucky as someone was pulling out right in front of the place on walnut st .. JUST KNOW...the place only takes cash, and thank god when I sat down I seen the sign say cash only ATM here....so that's the first thing I did, I went to get cash out...back to the food, the dining menu is short, only one page, it's a BBQ joint so go with the BBQ!
