O Pipo remains my favorite restaurant. This afternoon, I introduced my in-laws to it. They absolutely loved it! Tony treats everyone like family and this was no exception. We arrived at late lunch time and were seated after a brief wait. There's always an energy to the place, an authenticity that you want to be part of. Add to that, there's absolute magic going on in the kitchen! We went with obvious hits like the chourico, lamb chops, and short ribs but we also added the octopus salad. Everything was perfect but the octopus salad was unbelievable! Not even sure how they delivered that tenderness! We also made sure not to go without the potato discs, absolutely delicious! Was passing thru Newark airport and stopped for something to eat. Found this restaurant on yelp. Nice corner restaurant. Very loud as all the tables were full. A bit of a wait despite getting there at 6:30. However, well worth the wait. The waiters were friendly and helpful. For example, we ordered a salad and a paella to share and when we were about to get an appetizer, the waiter said: "wait for the paella and then we'll see". Boy was he correct. The paella for two is really for 3-4 and they were so generous with the seafood and it tasted exceptional...the best paella I have ever had. I hesitate to post this as I don't want more competition for a table the next time I go. However, the owners, chefs, and staff deserve others knowing about this gem. read more

Ummm well it was food, and I was starving! This is a family owned and operated restaurant. They were slammed! We were seated quickly without an issue but as we sat there the place filled to bursting. Clearly a very popular neighborhood place. Our server was probably the owner. You could tell he really cared! And he was super generous! Bringing things to the table we didn't even order, like a family style dressed salad. Fresh warm bread and a decent sized bowl of olives were complimentary. Honestly, the fresh hot crusty bread, olives and salad was by far the best part of the meal. I ordered the Vitella Madelena (probably spelling incorrectly), it just wasn't good. The meat was tough and in some cases un-chewable and it was dry to boot. This could not possibly have been veal, I absolutely refuse to believe it. It brought me back to childhood nightmares of London broil, just cut into cutlets. Even if they overcooked veal, it still could be chewed. I was grossed out. The Madelena sauce was interesting, I liked it! The rice and beans tasted like nothing and the "fries" were unseasoned and baked in the oven. No crisp, no structure and most notably of all, no taste. We didn't order dessert. If you really want to try this place, order seafood. Apparently that is a much better idea. read more

Dined here for first time last week for lunch. Outstanding. Promptly greeted as we entered, place was busy but we were lucky to get two seats at the kitchen end of the bar. As we sat down the bartender warmly welcomed us and gave us each a bowl of garlic marinated olives and fresh Portuguese rolls. Place is bright and cheery. Very lively. I believe we were the only two in the place that did not speak Portuguese including the talking heads on the TV, but it was of no concern to us. There is a warm neighborhood vibe even though we were not locals. We ordered the seafood platter for two. A little pricey but wow, great value. I had a couple glasses of the house red which was very quaffable and very reasonable priced. When the platter came out, I could not believe how much food was there. Very generous portion. A whole lobster, four huge prawns, at least a dozen jumbo shrimp, a dozen clams and mussels. As we began to work the pile, I noticed a pasta sized bowl underneath all the shellfish. In it was a pile of octopus, scallops, more clams and mussels, and calamari in a fish sauce. We hit it pretty good but there was still plenty leftover which we took home. Could easily have fed two couples. We will definitely go back as there is much more on the menu to explore. As it was lunch, we refrained from cocktails, but the selection of portuguese brandies looked pretty good. When we go back with the girls, I will definitely try a few. read more

If you're staying near Newark Airport and trying to figure out where to have a great meal, do yourself a favor and take the short 10-minute ride to O Pipo Tavern. It was hands down one of the best dining experiences I had in NJ. The atmosphere was incredibly warm and welcoming -- the kind of place that immediately makes you feel like a regular (even though clearly you aren't !) . The food was outstanding and truly authentic Portuguese cuisine, with huge portions and everything tasting incredibly fresh. Antonio, recommended a lovely Portuguese wine that paired perfectly with the meal. The flaming sausages were such a fun and delicious start, the Portuguese style shrimp ( and more ) flavors were amazing. And don't skip dessert -- the port wine poached pears were absolutely scrummy and the perfect ending. Wow, this place is fantastic! A friend and I were looking for some place to go in the Ironbound and someone suggested this place. I'm so glad they did! The place isn't big and luckily we were able to get a table right away, I think because it's summer. As we were leaving, people were waiting for tables. My friend ordered the pork chops, I ordered the octopus Don Luis and we shared a pitcher of white sangria. The grilled octopus was tender and tasty, served over potatoes with onions, and it was deliciously seasoned. My friend's pork chops were also phenomenal. Tender, juicy, and as you can see, it's a very large portion. Everything was served with rice and beans. We didn't have dessert because we were planning on going for ice cream, but we did have coffee. I had a cappuccino and he had an espresso. They do add A small charge on credit card bills so you might want to bring cash, but I still think that the prices here are very reasonable, especially for what you get. I thought that the parking was easier than expected, we found a spot around the corner right away. Parking in other parts of the Ironbound is usually impossible. Thank the Lord! Some things don't change. This wasn't my parents go-to but we came here occasionally (they were my adoptive parents but both authentic Portuguese). Both have since passed. The courses! The bread! The amazing joy in the room and from the staff. I was almost in tears leaving. The red onion salad: basic and salty and amazing. The clams casino was tasty and perfectly balanced and HOT. My veal and my daughter's sea bream were absolutely perfect. From olives to espresso this was off the charts amazing. I hugged my server who actually remembered my papa Luis! Had dinner with friends at O Pipo on a Thursday night having never been there before. Prior reviews were very positive. We all had a great experience- the food was outstanding(Grilled Sea Bass, Strip Steak, Garlic Shrimp, Crème Brûlée, Coconut Chocolate Mousse) as was the Portuguese wine. But....the highlight for all 4 of us was our server Tony. Amongst the best we've ever had anywhere. We asked about the goat having never had it- he brought us some to sample. We were unsure of which wine to order, he brought us healthy samples. A place for when you don't feel like cooking, or when you want a snack & a drink - or a place for a date or a celebratory meal. Oh, you've stolen my heart! After being delayed 2+ days from the end of my journey from Spain and sent to a voucher hotel... I had low hopes for the next 24 hours but then I grabbed an Uber to O Pipo Tavern and everything turned around. I got there a bit late for lunch (2:45) but the place was still hopping. The women's Euro cup match was on and lots of folks were finishing their multi-course lunch. Almost everyone was speaking Portuguese or a mix ...but no worries that I only spoke English. Quickly a dish of fabulous olives and bread appeared. I was asked if I wanted Portuguese wine (of course! everyone else seemed to be enjoying it) and we were off to the races. I ordered the grilled sea bass and it was one of the better meals I've had in my life, to tell you the truth (and I'd just gotten back from 6 weeks in Europe and I've been to Portugal :) ). Over the next 100 minutes, family dramas played out around me and Norway beat Sweden (yay), and I loved watching Tony, who had been serving me, sit down and thoroughly enjoy his lunch (sea bass and wine, as it turned out); other stellar men took good care of me while he did so. I am still smiling from the warm community of this restaurant. It wasn't just the gorgeous food and kind waiters (a complimentary shot of something delicious and spicy? Sure!) but the whole package. As my wife said while we were leaving "See why can't all restaurants be as friendly as nice as that place" We had the pleasure of being served by Tony and he was such a nice person. Actually everyone that came over to our table was extremely nice and friendly. Ok food; we started with the clams and if the service wasn't enough these clams definitely were the biggest flex. I'm trying to cut down on bread but I could have easily used all of the bread in the bread basket and soaked up the broth, delicious. We got a small 375ml bottle of red wine that was perfect for just two. Entrees: T bone Steak Com Camarao {T-bone with shrimp} and Parrilhada Do Mar (Grilled Mixed Seafood) both entrees were delicious! So as we were getting ready to pay Tony asked if we wanted any espresso and/or shot of liquor, we said no and he brought us both a shot of Creme de Pastel de Nata anyway :) Again super nice guy. First, this restaurant is Ironbound, O Pipo only has on-street parking, so you might have to drive around the block a couple of times for a parking spot. This is a lively old school tavern / restaurant with an incredibly friendly and helpful staff. When we were there on a Thursday evening, almost every table was taken. It is a bit loud, which only adds to the lively atmosphere. Even being so busy the wait time until food came out wasn't long; like 15 minutes. They have a daily specials menu in addition to a regular one. Many hard core Portuguese dinners on the menu, that night cod cheeks was a special. I was really tempted, but was starving and worried about portion size. So I had an delicious,huge portion of Beef Picadinho with Shrimp which was over the top good. My wife had Bife a Portuguesa which is Steak Portuguese Style. She loved it. The portions were so large that we had delicious leftovers for the next day. Should've had the cod cheeks! O Pipo is an absolute hit. You can't go wrong here. Parking is hectic, the restaurant itself is on the smaller side, there's usually a wait to get in - but trust me is it worth it. Service is great, these guys are busy and they know it. They're high energy and great with their patrons, they really know how to run the place like a well oiled machine. I came here for a gals lunch with my mom, aunt and a close family friend. My mom and I shared the monstrous seafood platter for two. Which really feeds about 3 or 4 with the sides. My aunt ordered the salmon and shrimp and our friend got the picadinho which is clams and pork cubes with potatoes. Everything was absolutely delicious. The seafood is some of the freshest I've ever had. Prawns the size of my face, delicious tender lobster, scallops, clams, mussels, there's a little bit of everything in this seafood platter and it's absolutely perfect. The salmon and shrimp was great too, very tasty and everything cooked to perfection. The picadinho is always a fan favorite too - the garlic sauce with the clams is just unmatched. Everything was also served with their delicious rice and crispy potatoes. The prices here are incredibly reasonable for what you're getting. It was a crowded night but the restaurant handled seating us fairly quickly and served us very quickly although one person's order was mistakenly given to another person and they took too long to serve him. Oh wow. I have never been to Portugal so I cannot truly comment on this restaurant's authenticity, but it certainly feels authentic. This place was completely packed and hopping on a random Thursday evening. It felt like everybody in the restaurant was a regular and everybody knew each other. I heard a lot of Portuguese being spoken and there was wine at every table. We had the Portuguese sausage, the shrimp with rice, and the bitoque a pipo (steak platter). It was a LOT of food for a low price. The shrimp with rice ($22) was a large stew with a bunch of shrimp that probably could feed two. The steak platter ($20) was a good sized steak and potatoes with egg, gravy and pickled vegetables that probably could so feed two. All of it tasted amazing! The garlic shrimp appetizer is amazing, great flavor to the garlicky oil, which soaks up in the side bread perfectly. For entree, we shared seafood paella. It is $38, and they say it's for two, but we could have easily split it among three and still had leftovers. It is huge. Also tasty. Tons of clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, and a couple lobster claws. One of the better paellas I have had in a long while. If you have room for dessert, the serradura is great. read more

If you do the same, there is no where else that will top your meal and dining experience than O Pipo. Upon being seated, you are greeted with delicious hot bread and olives which starts a memorable meal. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu! We had the veal chops and sea bass which were fantastic! I wish we lived here to regularly come back!!!!!
