For $14.50 I got a plate with two pieces of fried chicken (drumstick and breast), mac and cheese, candied yams with marshmellows, cornbread and lemonade First of all, the lemonade was perfectly balanced. I love lemonade so much and this was a truly great one. The fried chicken had a very thick crunchy coating and the meat beneath was seasoned throughout. The breading was also well seasoned, with lots of black pepper and other spices. The Mac and cheese was more than just American cheese. There was some other more complex cheese in there. Along with rich, cheesey flavor, there is additional spices and seasoning. I've never had candied yams with marshmellows before but these were incredible. The yam is so rich and creamy and buttery. The dessert like sweetness is tempered with enough salt for the earthy richness to stand up to it. The texture of the yam pairs perfectly with the soft, melted marshmellow. A fantastic bite. I am ready to go back to Vera's. I missed out on most of the menu items because I arrived at opening. The server / cashier was really nice. I was only intending on leaving with an order of Mac and cheese. She suggested I get the $6 special. I was actually craving some fried fish. My order was the hot honey barbecue chicken which was so delicious. It was juicy and tasty. The mac and cheese was scrumptious. It was a good lunch. Oh I arrived at 11 am. I came to this place to find out if the hype was real. I've been seeing reviews for the $6 dollar holla which consists of rice, chicken of your choice, a side, cornbread and a soda. The staff was cool especially the guy who bags the orders he was funny and cool. It's a small establishment that only accepts cash (ATM machine was off) and is set up for take out only. I have no complaints about my food and grateful nothing is cooked with pork YAY for me! I will say my only complaint is I tried my mans mash potatoes and boy oh boy they were nasty, but that wasn't my plate so it's not going against my review lol. read more

It's a small, standing-room-only take-out spot featuring familiar soul food and some colorful twists. The space is white and bright - making it feel much bigger than it is. There are large black and white vintage portraits above the serving area. The ambient music sounds like Hot 97, not Spotify. A friendly cashier takes your order upon arrival. You're then given a receipt with a number and guided around the serving counter. Try not to drool on yourself while watching the steam come up from all the deliciousness. I specifically went for the $6 Holla featured on @marcosworldnyc (IG) which includes any 1 piece of chicken, seasoned rice, a choice of side, fountain drink and cornbread. Sounds like a steal by any measure! I chose a garlic-honey thigh and collard greens. The thigh was a nice size too. The flavor was underwhelming. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect with garlic and honey. I tasted the sweetness of the honey, but the garlic flavor was fairly mild. Maybe it needed salt to pull it all together? The rice was fluffy and flavorful. The greens were well balanced withjist enough vinegar, spice, and loads of smoked turkey meat. I've never liked cornbread. EVER! Until today I damn near hated cornbread. What Vera's gave me was a moist, super-sweet piece of heaven. I think they've found the cure for depression. Protect them at all costs! read more

Food here is cheap and fantastic, service is great but we did wait 40 minutes for our food. Originally was told it'd be ready in 15 but ended up taking a long time. didnt bother me too much and could've always just chose another side but did want to note that. food is tender and tasty, mac was fire cornbread super sweet and buttery and the honey chicken was juicy and coated in delicious sweet and savory flavor. we also got the meatloaf which was massive and such good bang for your buck. i'd 100% comeback and recommend for anyone in the area craving some authentic soul food. inside was packed and busy but the workers were experienced and knew how to work through the crowd. read more

Hmmm, based off this location imma say NO For now. I know they have multiple locations this happens to be on Sutter. The ground beef presented as meatloaf ( i know) was horrible. It had too many spices in it where it took away from the meat like who eats spicy meatloaf. The yams or whatever they call it was blah and the chicken and Mac really did fight to make the plate lol. Someone needs to tweak the name of this place from Vera's to Queen Vera's cause damn it was so good it commands more respect. This restaurant oozes southern hospitality and cuisine at its best. Right through the door. Warmly greeted by the sweet staff. The place gives the vibe of "come in baby, let's make you a good plate and feed you just right " There are no seats but trust ,wherever you end up enjoying this meal it will transcend comfort. I was just there to pick up a Too Good To Go order and I was a bit early . ( I was honestly confused because the pickup time said 9pm to 930pm but the website said they closed at 830pm ) I told them I wasn't sure of the time and I was willing to wait but they said they'd make my order right away. They actually close at 9pm on Friday. I took some pics for my review, collected my order and was on the way home. As you know I'm a big supporter of Too Good To Go as it's not only a good resource for food rescue but a great way to try a restaurant's food and get a feel of the service . Now on to the food at Vera's. To say impressed would be an understatement. Everything made my tummy smile. Rice seasoned so well I could just eat a plate of it by itself. Mac and Cheess just the way I like it- baked and cheesy. They gave us fried chicken, barbecue chicken and Honey Butter chicken . I can't choose a favorite they were all great. The cutest little corn bread bites were fluffy and so good. Of course my kids fought for them. I see turkey wings on their menu and that's one of my favorite soyld food meats . I will return to Vera's to try more of the items especially the Collard greens and peach cobbler. The prices are very reasonable . The restaurant was clean, they have an ATM on site too. I very rarely give 5 stars , I have to be really really impressed and satisfied with food ,service ,value and cleanliness among other things. Coincidentally the last place I gave e 5 stars too was another Soul Food place in close proximity . Where to begin? My visit to Vera's Take Out in Brownsville, Brooklyn today was nothing short of amazing. There's good food service, and then there's the exceptional level of courtesy, cleanliness, and customer service I experienced here. The trip was a bit of a hike, taking two hours on public transportation from downtown Clinton Hill to Brownsville, for those familiar with Brooklyn. Upon arriving, I was pleased to find the flat roll-in glass door, which was especially appreciated since I'm in a wheelchair. The accessibility was spot-on. A friendly, courteous gentleman greeted me and made me feel right at home. I mentioned it was my first time there, and he excitedly walked me through the many delicious options. Everything looked fresh, clean, and incredibly appetizing! I chose the fish with mac 'n' cheese and collard greens, as well as the meatloaf with spicy rice and cabbage. I also couldn't resist ordering one of each of the eight sides on the menu. After the long bus ride back home, it was finally time to dig in. The meatloaf was tender and flavorful, while the rice and collards were just right. I almost ate my dinner plate in one sitting! As a cabbage lover, I was thrilled with the cabbage, and the yams with marshmallows reminded me of my childhood. Everything was superb, and the service rivaled the food in excellence. I was especially impressed to see that this is a Blackowned business in a Black neighborhood. They've worked hard to offer quality, respect, and a top-tier product. The mac & cheese is baked to perfection, the fried chicken is seasoned all the way through (crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside), and don't even get me started on the yams... sweet, buttery, and made with love. The cornbread wasn't sweet nor moist as I expected & it's a small corn muffin keep it in the warmer at least. Now the collard greens were cook well but had no flavor whatsoever as well as the macaroni it was cook good with the right amount of cheese but no flavor. I say this too say everything could've been a hit if there were to sprinkle atleast alil seasoning the restaurant will go along way. Also the pricing is cheap so you can get full off a $6 platter definitely. read more
