I haven't been here in a year and it's still amazing. Came with my non vegan boyfriend and he also loved it a lot (which he doesnt say often with vegan food, he usually just says it's okay lol). Veggie Fun is hands down the best vegan restaurant I have ever been to. They have anything any other chinese restaurant would have on their menu, and it tastes just the same, if not better. Veggie Fun is exactly what it sounds like: vegetarian food that's fun. I gotta be honest, I didn't miss the meat at all -- this food is fresh, tasty and really, really well-made. The location is great -- on the far end of Dorrance, away from the hubbub but still downtown, which makes the parking easy and you're still within walking distance of a lot of great shopping, bars, etc. The space is large, bright and airy thanks to huge windows and high ceilings. But enough about that -- let's talk about food. I've had the Orange Seitan and the General Tso's Soy Protien, and both were fabulous. I'd even venture to say they were better than the chicken versions I've had elsewhere as they're all flavor, great texture, served with perfectly cooked broccoli, and very far away from being made with what might be sketchy meats. These dishes are just damn delicious. I've also had the house salad and spring rolls -- in fact, each entree comes with a side of brown rice and salad or miso soup, and the spring rolls are free if you Check-In on your Yelp App (hint, hint). Walked into this place with some expectation that it would be good, based on reviews off of here and word of mouth. I do remember when it was originally Asian Bistro, as they kept the same exact decor. Needless to say the experience that we had was not very fun, nor do I think it will last very long hereafter word gets out. Let me start off by reviewing my dish. I had the teriyaki soy duck on a bed of green beans- if you're expecting it to taste anything like duck you're in for a disappointment, of course, I didn't have any hopes that it would, though I did hear good things about it so I was willing to give it a shot. The glaze that came along with it was really sweet, and honestly there was A LOT of it. The dish came with a small bowl of brown rice, which frankly, I didn't care much for. Final verdict? I guess if I were a vegetarian, I'd settle for a meal like this. If you're a meat lover like myself, the taste is really incomparable. I think I'll stick with greasy take-out duck from now on... So this is where things began to get a little iffy. For the appetizer they had a choice of soup or salad. I chose the miso soup. It's definitely a lot more diluted than most places, not very miso-y at all. I guess for some, that may be a good thing. As I was eating the soup, I couldn't happen but notice a small brownish speck floating around that didn't look like it belonged there. I pointed it out to the others I was dining with and I guess that's when I started making them paranoid enough to inspect their food. Here's where my story stems from my review to our vegetarian friend's... She had ordered some kind of dish with an assortment of stir-fried veggies, it came along with a plate of lettuce. The lettuce had LIVING MICRO BUGS crawling on it- visibly more than one hanging around! This was brought to the attention of the waitress, which frankly was nothing but passive about the whole thing! She came back with another plate of lettuce, very likely the same lettuce that was given, except probably slightly more rinsed off. The only difference? There were the same micro bugs crawling around like they owned the place, half of which were now dead. The waitress' response of the whole thing was absolutely priceless. "This is good lettuce, it's Romaine!" Sorry, I don't care it it's the finest lettuce in the world, NO ONE wants living bugs in their food, point blank. I'm guessing from the embarrassment of the establishment, this incident was swept under the rug and we received no apology from any manager of the place. That says a lot about courtesy. So I like vegetables. But I never thought I would like veggies this much. Instead of the standard Asian fare, I have now converted to Veggie Fun takeout on a weekly basis. The sauce also has a nice kick to it, and it's never super gunky or sticky. They also cook the broccoli just right so it's not too chewy but not limp either. The eggplant and string beans are also pretty good. It comes with a ton of sauce that perfect for pouring over rice. The eggplant is a little bit mushy, but still really flavorful. The green beans, though, were cooked perfectly. I've tried both of their soups. I love the lemongrass soup; it's kind of like a vegetarian hot and sour soup that's not super spicy. However, the miso soup is a little underwhelming. It may have just been my order, but there was hardly any tofu or seaweed in the soup and it was really brothy. YES! and its in Providence RI a bit of away from my Long Island home... this is a really nice looking place dark furnishing cute lanterns and big windows booths ...all good! and nice friendly service what could be better! Down away from the hubbub of downtown and in a neat location where you can look out at the goings on of Pine St. I was expecting a bit more atmosphere, but it was dark and I liked that for dinner time. Ok, I got the Bi Bim bap, and obviously I cannot read and was a bit confused that it was cold. I would have liked that the server confirmed with me that I was ordering a cold dish (this is after she got pushy with my drink order being very strong and reiterating this several times). The kimchi was nice and spicy, the seaweed salad was well seasoned, the chickpeas seemed a bit out of place and unseasoned. It was supposed to be served with hot sauce and sesame sauce, but I definitely received a peanut sauce. The decor was a little lacking, and there were some obvious barriers between the waitstaff and guests. I used to come here all the time for lunch with my mom when I worked downtown. I've only ever had the Pad Thai, but trust me when I say it is the best I've ever had. My mom had ordered other items off the menu and has enjoyed them also, but I can't personally speak to that. I am always surprised at how empty this place is during lunch. It has become one of my favorite lunch destinations and I'm not a vegetarian. My favorite dish so far is the General Tso Seitan. I've also tried the Sweet & Sour Seitan as well as the dumplings on the appetizer menu. Lunch plates are $9 and you get plenty of food. Actually, VF is full-vegan and as I found out, about nine days after they first opened their doors on Dorrance Street, their compassionate take on traditional Americanized-Asian fare is really delicious. Having gone back for both table service and take out more times than I can count, let me just say three more things: 1. Their staff is the friendliest in town. 2. It is awesome that I no longer have to travel to Boston or NYC to get the asiatic treats I recall from my meat-eating days. 3. If you get bugged out by mock-meats, you will not like it here. We arrived on a Saturday around 3pm and there were a good amount people inside. We were immediately seated and the chairs were super comfy. We each ordered a beer and appetizers. We had the BBQ seitan and the scallion pancakes. We then had the Pad Thai and sweet and sour chicken. Everything was excellent and portions were large. It's not drowning in coconut sauce as you might expect but more on the dry side. The fresh rolls were large and the sauce heavy. I prefer the rolls from Apsara but it's s personal preference. I'm usually not a fan of vegan resteraunts, just because they are always overpriced and serve small portions. However, this place was not too bad. Everything was reasonably priced and they had a whole variety of different foods on the menu. I liked that they had different dishes inspired by different Asian countries, although I think a lot of it is Americanized. Food was decent, but the waitress we had was awful. I have to start out by claiming how apprehensive I was before venturing into vegan cuisine, but I'm glad I started at Veggie Fun. To start my girlfriend chose the lychee mojito, which she enjoyed and a Thai tea for myself which was great as usual. For dinner we shared the edamame, vegetable dumplings, and general tso soy protein. We also lucked out being one of the only couples in the restaurant that night, and had a very small wait for our food. We went here on a sleepy Sunday afternoon, but there were still about half of the booths full. The Kim chi appetizer was nice - I didn't notice too much cilantro, the spice levels were moderate. For entrees, a Moo-Shu Fantasia, aptly named mix of delicious shiitake mushrooms, strips of cabbage, scallions and carrots. Served with four tortilla wrappers. The Malaysian Curry (stew) had a nice, slightly spicy sauce, and large amounts of soy protein strips, broccoli and carrots. The potatoes and brown rice were extras (but more than I needed). The restaurant itself had a nice quiet vibe about it even though it was midday on a Saturday. The staff was really nice and offered a great suggestion for someone who was in foreign territory as far as my taste buds were concerned. I tried the spicy basil dish and found it to be really stellar. The dish looked beautiful and the flavors were amazing. I'm not really a zucchini person but I loved the zuchinni in this dish. After driving by the place many times back to my dorm, I became curious. I'm gluten free and can't have animal products due to allergies. My meal itself was delicious, and my roommate enjoyed the chocolate cake (she can have "regular" food) that I accidentally got thinking it came gluten free. But the amount of food I received was very small to what the cost of the food is. I understand that everything is fresh, but $11 for a small portion of fried rice on a majority bed of kale and broccoli is steep. I arrived early before my friends and ordered the steamed dumplings and a cup of tea. the waitress was very rude. she wouldn't or couldn't take the time to tell me what kind of tea they had and angrily turned to the drink portion of the menu. she said she was too busy to help me. there were no other people in the restaurant. I asked for the bill, I wanted to pay for my appetizer and drink before my party joined me. I clearly stated i was waiting for others to arrive and would be eating dinner and I wanted to quickly pay for my bill before anyone got there. I signed the credit card slip...I did not tip because we would be eating dinner, I didn't leave the table and I would tip later on the dinner bill. this woman literally confronted me..."you didn't leave me a tip!". I was astonished. I said I'm not leaving. I'm having dinner. I started to ask about the soup, she again told me I don't have time to answer your questions. this was the rudest server I've ever encountered. the food was ok but she ruined my dinner with her rude and disgusting attitude. the tea cup was gross. I ordered aged tofu and tempura vegetables, the time on my receipt was 6:42 and server slot namev"Banana". I am a regular with Veggie Fun and it was once a weekly treat for me. I unfortunately was treated very rudely last night by one of the employees, I am not sure of her name but she has lighter her and eye contacts. She asked me my name which was said lowly and with a very thick accent. She then said "NAME MA'AM!" very rudely and loud, and I answered in a calm manner. Another girl started to chuckle (she is very short wore glasses) and wouldn't hand me my food or talk to me. I had to ask someone to take my signature receipt because the first girl slammed something behind the register down and STOMPED back to the kitchen. I let them know that she was very rude and left. This has NEVER happened since I've been a customer there and vegan takeout in the area is not easy to find. I am usually greeted with politeness and friendly smiles. I was very shocked and upset, so I waited until I arrived home and called to speak with a manager. I was told that she/he was not there at the time and that they could take a message. I then asked what time the manager will be in and was told SHE IS NEVER THERE!!!Unfortunately my phone went out so calling the next day is an option...
