I hate to give this place 4 stars because it was more than good but thinking about it, I don't think this place was "great" either. I think there is potential there but it doesn't hit the mark and when Michelin does come to Rhode Island, they are going to have to step their game up if they want more than 1. We were sat in the back dining area, near the kitchen, which I love because I love watching people work in an open kitchen. You'd think I'd hate it because it makes me think of my own job but I think that's why I like watching so much, to see how other people work. Our server was casual and relaxed and very personable. She gave good recommendations and really made us feel comfortable and engaged. The problem was service was slow. There were so many servers standing around and chitchatting (including ours) but we never got a water refill and we didn't order as many drinks as we would have because she didn't come by very often. There really was a lot of standing by the kitchen and not touching tables. Also, food service was slow. It took 20 min between first set of cocktails coming and the apps. Second course came 30 min after the first. Our main, which was supposed to come with the second course came 10 min after the pastas. Dessert, which we pre-ordered, came 30 min after the steak. This was a long meal for no reason. The food was excellent. The tartare, the black pasta, the agnolotti and the steak were absolute perfection and tasted amazing. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the dessert. Which is so disappointing given that I am a pastry chef and that we had to pre-order it. It just wasn't good and didn't live up to the rest of the food. The pastry wasn't cooked all the way so it was soggy and a bit raw, the cherries were flavorless. And it was ugly. The pastry person needs to practice making quenelles. It also took forever to get the check. We waited 20 min after the dessert to be able to leave. read more

We are from out of town, but whenever we stay in Providence we go to Persimmon. It's just a rule we have. We torture ourselves and regularly frequent their Instagram page even though we know it could be several months before we return. We love this place. We always request Craig whenever we make a reservation but regardless if we get him the service is always good from whomever we have. The menu always changes though the beef tartare always seems to be on the menu and for a good reason. Also, the desserts are always killer. We have never had a desert that wasn't great, in fact one of the best deserts we ever had was a few years back at Persimmon. We talk about it til this day. Been wanting to try this place for sometime now and saw that there was an opening for Friday night at 7pm and made reservations. I got there a bit early and was seated right away. Initially, I was only going to get three items, but decided on the tasting menu. Food was aesthetically, pleasing, and tasty. My server was very knowledgeable with explaining the dishes. Came here for our anniversary - it's our second time. Love being able to sit and look into the open kitchen. My husband can't have anything cooked with alcohol and our waiter was so great about double checking everything we ordered with the kitchen. What's also amazing is that the bar can recreate any cocktail w/ zero proof spirits. They are amazing. The food - as always was delicious and interesting and always seasonal. For a place that's so upscale the vibe is always comfortable. TL;DR: If you or anyone in your party have a food allergy, skip the tasting menu. I debated for months to write my first ever bad review.... I've eaten at Persimmon multiple times over the past few years, and until recently, I always left impressed. The food is (usually) thoughtful, the ambiance lovely, and the staff (usually) attentive. It (usually) strikes the right balance of elevated and not stuffy. That's why in May - I choose it for a birthday celebration for my family who were visiting Providence for the first time & my parents! We were excited to try the tasting menu, but despite clearly noting my odd food allergy (carrots) in the reservation, the kitchen said they couldn't accommodate it. I wasn't offered substitutions or even a modified version. Instead, I was told I'd have to order à la carte while everyone else enjoyed the tasting. It created an awkward, isolating dynamic. While our table went through multiple courses, I sat with an empty plate. We had to flag down a waiter (after waiting for 1 hour) to get my first plate. As a result, no one could fully enjoy the meal. I've always thought of Persimmon as a place that cares about the guest experience. This time, it fell short. I tried reaching out a couple of times to flag the issue - by email and by our reservation app and had zero response back. Honestly, If no one in your party has a food allergy, you'll likely have a lovely time. But if you do--skip the tasting menu. read more

Really enjoyed our experience here. Extremely impressed with their honey nut squash soup with Parmesan emulsion and the black spaghetti with bottarga di muggine. I also had the pumpkin gnocchi with Maitake mushrooms, turnip, parsnip and sage but would not recommend as highly. Great Old Fashioned. They have a new menu everyday but the black spaghetti is apparently a regular feature. Service was okay but could have been more proactive about refilling our waters. Julia was such a great server! For our first time she was super chill, made great recommendations and didn't make us feel foolish for not having been before or knowing to order plates to share. I wish I had gotten pictures of our app (oysters were the best I have ever had). And my sloe gin fizz was refreshing. We split a pasta dish with scallops - and I really enjoyed the scallops. They melt in your mouth. My mother had the duck and I had the beef. It was perfectly prepared. For dessert we shared the chocolate tart and the apple cake with rosemary ice cream. My mom preferred the apple cake - and I'll agree that the ice cream was top notch but overall I'd go for the chocolate again. The restaurant is set up in such a nice way that each section feels intimate and cozy. Where I sat I could see the kitchen and the food prep which I always enjoy. There's something so cool about a well run kitchen and watching people put the final touches on the dishes as they come out always interests me, there was clearly a level of care being put out. My boyfriend and I went to Persimmon for New Year's Eve and sat at the bar, and overall we had a great experience. We were a little nervous to try it since it is known for being upscale and expensive, and we did our research beforehand. We are giving Persimmon five stars, but no place is perfect. The restaurant was clean and the bartenders were extremely well trained, personable, and attentive even on a busy night. The food was exceptional. Although the New Year's Eve menu was limited, every course exceeded our expectations. We shared appetizers, entrées, and dessert, and even asked for cannolis that were not on the bar menu. The bartender made it happen, which made the night feel extra special. It is definitely pricey, and the portions were smaller than expected, so most dishes are not ideal for splitting. That said, the staff was wonderful and the food was worth it. We would absolutely recommend Persimmon for a special occasion. Really nice date night spot or a spot to catch up with friends. Ambiance is nice and warm. The staff were very accommodating and friendly as well. The food wassss, well it was just okay, but not everything. We felt like everything was over seasoned and couldn't really take many bites of the lobster risotto. The lobster tasted chewy and raw. Myself & a few friends have a wide range of different allergies / dietary restrictions. Our server Emily was AMAZING. She didn't bat an eye, and at no point seemed unsure or like anything was out of the ordinary. Its hard to explain, but instead of going down the menu and phrasing what was okay to eat in a limited way, she did it in a way that was more like "you can have so much!" so it didn't feel like options were restricted. Allergies aside, she was just a great server! All of our food was delicious, and it was a special occasion that we were all getting together, so for allergies (which like, we can't help!) to not influence the food or overall experience meant so much. read more

Never really have any complaints here other than the way your clothes smell when you leave - the open kitchen is cool to watch and worth it though. The bolognese and squid ink pasta are always a must. The foie gras always great, especially the one they served w/ cornbread. Drool. Duck dishes are nice and crispy and the other meats are always succulent. TIP: It's pricey here but worth it. Simply outstanding! As a typical Rhode Islander, I avoided driving out of my normal radius and never visited Persimmon when it was located in Bristol. Now that it's in Providence, I was so excited to try it and can't believe I waited so long to do so. It was one of my favorite food experiences in a long while. Our server was helpful but laidback and low key (the perfect balance). I really enjoyed the Don Johnson cocktail and would get it again and again on future visits. We sampled several items to share, including a grilled cucumber salad, shishito peppers, and braised greens croquettas. Each of these items was incredible. They were all so different yet each was perfectly balanced in flavor and texture. We couldn't find a single flaw. Each of us selected a pasta entree. My friend loved her black spaghetti and I loved my agnolotti. Again, the dishes were flawless. Finally, the summer-inspired Paris Brest was the perfect culmination to this incredible meal. A few weeks ago we returned to dine here with friends from out of town. It's one of our favorite restaurants in Providence. The place, the food and the staff , Andrew R - are very welcoming. We ordered a range of food and drinks, starting with a margarita, Tullemore Dew, cardinal Sin and the curiously named penicillin. For food we shared deviled eggs, croquettes, and a salad. Followed by black spaghetti, lasagna, chicken and duck. We had a bottle of Pinot Noir. And ended with a tasty chocolate tart. One of the very few 5-star places in the city. So aside from the cold burnt focaccia we were served at the beginning of our meal and the long wait between the first two courses and the last two courses, the restaurant was a pleasant experience. We came here on a Friday evening and unfortunately didn't have reservations, so we sat outside. There are a few tables outside around the restaurant and it was nice weather. Service was great. Our server, Emily, was very friendly. My husband ordered a drink and didn't really like it and she said we could switch it for another drink. We ordered the croquettes, beef wellington, and pappardelle. The croquettes are braised green croquetes with dijonaise sauce. The beef wellington is beef tenderloin wrapped in parma ham, swiss chard and mushroom duxelle, roasted carrots and fingerling potato. The beef was very tender. I had the pappardelle with red wine-braised New Hampshire pig's head, native oregano, lovage and yarrow. The portion of the pappardelle was a bit small, more like an appetizer. The food was very yummy. The prices were a little steep, but if you want to a nice night out then definitely check this place out. read more

Finally made it out to Persimmon. For many of us students on College Hill, Persimmon is a Hope Street icon that graces Instagram feeds often, but remains psychologically distant. Many of us pass by it, hear about it, but rarely have occasion to visit. Its aura and reputation (read: $$$ on Google Maps) especially emphasizes the need for an occasion. I had been waiting for an occasion myself, until I realized my time in Providence was coming to an end and time's limited nature itself was a good enough reason ): It's a small plates restaurant which is great for people like me who get bored easily of big-dish foods. My personal favorites of the night were the chicken wing, soft shell crab, and black spaghetti. With the first two especially, I was trying to figure out what goes in their sauces and scraped the plate clean. The cornbread was okay, the beef tartare had me craving for more and the scallops were really good but it was nothing incredibly different from scallops elsewhere. We split 6 dishes among 2 and I (the smaller human being) felt pretty full after walking in starving. There are restaurants that feel like home-cooked meals and restaurants that have every atom on the plate engineered to correspond to a taste bud. Persimmon is the latter and I'm thankful that they're so dedicated to their craft. I'm incredibly glad to have been able to visit before leaving--it definitely lived up to the reputation of being one of the best in Providence. read more

I loved Persimmon. I made a reservation for our anniversary and asked for a specific table. I was told that they could not reserve a specific table but it if was available when we arrived it could be ours. I picked an early reservation time just to strengthen my offs. We arrive and I'm thrilled to see the table is open. I asked for the table and was told that it had been reserved for someone else. I got to watch the table as it sat empty and then watched another couple dine at the spot I had hoped for for our anniversary. They lost a customer for life and I'll tell this story to any one that asks. read more

What a wonderful vibe this establishment has. Brought my daughter for a birthday drink. The bartender was a great, friendly young man. He gave us menus, which included drinks, which I told him would be overwhelming . So I asked that he make a suggestion. "A passion fruit margarita " was the answer. It was so so good. My daughter ordered a gimlet. She said it was very smooth( which it was). She makes the best gimlet I've ever tasted, so that was quite the compliment. This was our second time dining at Persimmon and it did not disappoint. This time, we decided to try the 5 course tasting menu and we are happy we did! Each course was satisfying and delicious from the appetizer course (which included some wonderful bite size morsels like oysters, beef tartare, and a sun choke soup that was amazing) to the salad course, pasta course, and the main course (lamb, two ways) then finished off with an amazing dessert of white chocolate that words can't describe. The wine pourings were generous and paired perfectly with each course. They even provided homemade chocolates at the end of the meal. Our waiter, Bob, was polite, friendly and provided us with information about each course and wine pairing throughout the meal. This is quickly becoming one of our favorite restaurant choices in Providence and we are looking forward to our next visit. read more

My girlfriend and I visited Providence to celebrate our anniversary and wanted to treat ourselves to a special dinner while in town. Persimmon was hands down the best choice we could have made for the occasion. We were a no res walk in (Wednesday right at 5PM) and were kindly seated by the host at a table for two in the back room where we could observe the chefs firing out orders while taking in the well thought out interior of the restaurant. I definitely recommend going on the earlier side so you can take your time coursing out the dishes before things pick up during peak service. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable and gave us some great recommendations on what to order. He brought us the house focaccia to nibble on as we picked our first few courses. For two people, a few of the appetizers, two pastas and a main entree was the perfect amount. The duck leg confit was by far our favorite dish - cooked to melt perfectly in your mouth, guided by an inexplicably delicious spice glaze. It was truly killer. The pasta dishes were unique. The corn agnolotti brought seasonal flare while still providing that comfort and simplicity we all look for in a good pasta. Can't recommend this place enough! read more

Visiting from out of town so had no notion of what to expect from this spot and was very pleasantly surprised. The menu isn't so overwhelming as there are a lot of dishes I wasn't terribly interested in so easier to narrow down. Started with the oyster with uni and caviar- a flavorful way to start the night. Next was the ceasar salad which was a perfect balance of the ceasar sardine-flavoring, crunch from the breadcrumbs, and creaminess. The salmon belly tartare over crispy rice was outrageous: the warmth and bite of the rice and the fattiness of the salmon belly perfectly paired. Last minute ordered the croquettes, which were so creamy and a nice intermission. We were torn about the pasta and ultimately went with the black spaghetti, which I could've eaten by the bucket. Perfectly chewy spaghetti with the overall flavoring made for an amazing dish. The least impactful of the night was the pork shoulder, but even this was a lovely crisp of pork over well seasoned black eyed peas so was delightful. Finished off with the flan which was a delectable combination of traditional flan, fruit, and spiced ice cream. The only flaw of the night was the house special drink with the essence of milk, which was just extremely sweet and difficult to drink. Having good food is no reason to treat people poorly. Such potential.. but my family and I found no hope on hope st (in our unfortunate experience). Even Michelin star restaurants invest in respecting guests. I'm not sure why that was not the case for us, but we left and i'm sad that my daughter had to witness such intentional lack of courtesy, bordering the line of contempt, that I would be surprised to see from a stranger.. still shocked. Just didn't expect this from (what people say is) a well-rated establishment. I'm not sure where the contempt originated, perhaps staff wanted to go home.. perhaps I could have phrased our dining request in a different way, or made my menu request sooner, but in all cases dining should be a pleasant and welcome experience for all. We are the same, chefs, staff, guests, there are no opposing sides to dining, or there shouldn't be.. Food is for everyone, let's enjoy it together! While we had a bad experience, I do hope that others do not experience the same (hence the reason for posting this unfortunate event) and sincerely advocate for Persimmon management to consider a slight change in their correspondence; perhaps moving away from public shaming and towards a more professional, accepting, or even friendly approach. I think this atmosphere, in addition to your talented back of house would serve your business well in the future. Very nice restaurant in the east side of Providence. Nestled in between historical houses and old trees. The inside is warm and cozy and clean. This place had amazing food and I loved how it was small plates that were reasonably price so you can try a lot of different items. I loved we had to eat, especially the black spaghetti and the croquettes. I also had an espresso martini which was tasty and a good pairing with the food.
