That being said the $5.50 Taco sounds expensive but it's VERY large so to me it's worth it! I'm rounding up from 3.5 stars. This place is clean, the food comes out fast, looks great. Love that the salsa bar is available and has pickled red onions and pickled carrots and onions. Saw someone eating some delicious looking tacos and immediately regretted my decision to order burritos. My issue was that the salsas were so spicy as to be basically inedible (and I generally love spicy food!!). My husband licked the top from the light orange salsa and said it was so spicy he couldn't taste anything else while eating the first 1/3 of his burrito. The carne asada in the burrito was heavily spiced, maybe a little too much so. Just discovered some good eats at Valerie's and have to share. This one location in particular was highly recommend by a local including but not limited to burritos (Surf and Turf), tacos Al pastor, Diablo taco w/ battered shrimp, grilled shrimp, grilled mahi, and sides. Tortillas, drinks, etc are all made in house. But the churros stole my heart with their warm cinnamon sugar crispy outside and a creamy center. Loved them so much so I had the husband order several more for midnight snacks. The unlabeled sauce bar needs to come with big letter warning: the pop small cups will set mouth on fire. Valerie's Taco Shop is located right next door to the Board and Brew Restaurant. I wanted to pick up some Mexican food for my dinner this evening at 5 p. m. This is the first time I have gone to this Oceanside location. There was a lot of customers walking in to order their food items and then taking home their Mexican food orders. I was already (Full) from eating a Huge Sandwich earlier today so I only ordered one Food Item. I chose the Carne Asada Burrito with extra Spanish Rice and extra Refried Beans. I really wanted to have a side order of the Spanish Rice and the Refried Beans on a separate plate not inside my burrito. Then I received one mild chili sauce with my Carne Asada Burrito. The total cost was $10.27. Tonight I only ate half of my Carne Asada Burrito because I was still full but I wanted to eat some Mexican food. I heated up my burrito in the microwave oven for one minute and 30 seconds to warm up the burrito. Then I picked up the Carne Asada Burrito and took small bites of it, there is too much oil that was used when cooking the steak on the grill because this oil has soaked into this tortilla and it makes the burrito soggy. I can taste the oily flavor every time I bite into this Carne Asada Burrito. I should not have asked this Spanish woman Cashier to ask the cook to put extra Spanish Rice and extra Refried Beans in this burrito. The burrito was overloaded with too much ingredients. It didn't taste that good. I gave this review a 3 Star Rating because of the heavy usage of Oil in this Carne Asada Burrito and it soaked into the Tortilla. Plus too much added ingredients like the Spanish Rice and Refried Beans. I will continue to eat at the Valerie's Taco Shop at the North Emerald Drive location in Vista, CA. I ate the Carne Asada Burrito at the Vista location and that burrito was very delicious with no heavy oil usage. read more

Meh. Very uninspired and not very tasty. Ordered the California burrito and a grilled shrimp and grilled fish taco. What it says on the ingredient list is what you get. Nothing more. So the California burrito had beef, French fries, and cheddar cheese. No rice, beans, lettuce. Add your own salsa. Extra for sour cream or guacamole. The grilled seafood tacos were sopping in a not so tasty creamy sauce to the point where the tortillas were unrecognizable mush. We ended up scraping the cabbage and proteins off and left the tortillas stuck to the box. Rather underwhelmed. read more

In no particular order, here are the reasons for my poor review: * Salsa bar with no labels... no idea what anything was. * Tiny little salsa cups... are they afraid someone will stock up for home? * The "Veggie burrito" has Rice, beans, and lettuce. I asked if they offered any grilled veggies, like bell peppers or onions, and the guy looked at me like I was from another planet. * The loud and obscene music could be heard from 4 doors down. I'd hate to be their neighbors. New favorite taco shop in North County! I would describe Valeries as a cross between The Taco Stand chain and your favorite taco shop in SD for drunchies (drunk munchies). I came across Valeries while going on a Target run during my lunch break. Valeries is right next to Board and Brews near the Target that borders Carlsbad and Oceanside. Highlights of my visit: This taco shop was so clean. Very generous portion of protein. Loved the fresh kick of cilantro and cotija cheese on my tacos. Legit Adobada cooking in front of your eyes. FRESH homemade corn tortilla. You can see them making them and you can for sure taste the difference. It's so soft. I can just eat their tortilla with cheese, avocado, and their hot sauces. SALSA BAR WAS SOOOO GOOD. I really loved the salsa at their salsa bars. All of the HOT salsas were on point. My nose was running. I was slightly sweating. Great signs of a delicious, well made hot sauce. The neon creamy orange hot sauce was the best. The prices were very reasonable. Two huge tacos with a bunch of meat for less than $7. Areas for improvement: The meat was slightly overcooked. The spicy carrot tasted canned and too soft. The horchata did not taste as authentic as it looked in the jug. Limes were dry.
