Wonderful, cool, lots of pockets (some detach) They no longer have the flagship store in Pioneer Square but they do take appointments for fittings at their current location in Seattle just off Elliott Ave near the cruise ship port. The fitter was funny, efficient, and discussed history, types and even showed us the original utilikilt! High quality kilts. Three main types: Spartan Workman Survival (I got one of these in a two tone - love it!) If you want Carhartt quality, go with the Workman. Wow, those have some hardcore fabric from the same mill as Carhartt and are heavy duty! They might seem expensive but when you break down cutting fabric, sewing, attaching hardware, it's really worth it. It takes 1-¾ hrs just to sew one. Oh, I am definitely a pirate! read more

9/9/21 Visited this place with my wife back in 2019, before the Coronavirus Outbreak happened.   We happened to be walking around downtown Seattle and found this store by mistake. I enjoyed the many varieties of kilts, and loved the utility Kilt.  It reminds of the times I wore my other kilts and thought about the need for pockets.  I thought about the guy I met on Halloween  who was wearing a utility Kilt.  I liked the look and had the nessasary pockets to hold your personal stuff. The kilts I have now don't fit me and I would much prefer a Kilt with pockets.  I would also prefer it not have clam colors. When my wife and I saw the store, she was a little offended that we were ignore in the empty store by the associate who was there.  As soon as a Caucasian woman walked in, he was all smiles and eager to help her.  I did not really notice this, because I was looking at the kilts.  I do believe I saw the Seattle Seahawks Kilt while I was there, but if not, I did see it on Yelp.  I like the look.  I could just imagine what a Baltimore Ravens Kilt could look like. I don't remember the prices, but they were less expensive that the traditional kilts I bought.  Should we...maybe I get a chance to check out this store again,  I will end up buying one of these Utilikilts. I noticed a Utilikilts for the mail carriers.  I wonder what else I will see on your website.   The possibilities are endless. Stopped in to visit Utilikilts to try on one of their kilts - the "original" model. As others have stated - there is no dressing room - an employee will wrap the kilt around you and you then drop your pants and snap the kilt in place try it on. I was surprised at first and thought they were kidding - but quickly realized they were not and got over my mild discomfort. The Utilikilts are awesome! Found my size with the help of the guys. I own a couple of traditional kilts - but soon will be buying a Utilikilt or two. Can't wait! read more

I freaking love this place. I went here for the first time 2 weeks ago to gain some insight on kilts and whatnot. I get married in September and plan on wearing one then so I wanted to get an idea and gain some knowledge of traditional and utility kilts. This was definitely the place to go! I'm bummed I can't remember the gal i talked to but she was super helpful and knowledgeable throughout the visit. She wasn't just trying to sell kilts, she wanted to make sure I was happy with the purchase and found something that worked for me. Utilikilt has so many great designs of non traditional kilts with many different colors. It also appears they are more than willing to handle custom orders with the right time frame of course. She helped me understand the fit of the kilt as well which was huge since I was struggling to understand where it should fall and whatnot. I will definitely be back! read more

A while ago I caught sight of Utilikilts but they were closed so I recently made a point to go back when I was in the area. I mean you just got to love a store that is entirely devoted to kilts! The selection is wide and vast and amazing to browse through! The material that makes up the kilts are sturdy, they are very well made! There are so many kinds to pick from! Black ones, khaki ones, denim ones and more custom made ones like with paint splatters or reflective strips like you see road construction workers wearing. So when my boss bought a few of these Utilikilts a while back, we all thought it was pretty funny (especially the kind with a special "beer cut" for the more zaftig utilikilt afficianados). I had no idea they were in Seattle, but when I saw them on the tourist map I told my friend we had to check it out. So we made our way to Pioneer Square to visit the store like a couple of religious pilgrims or something. It turned out to be a hoot and a half--lots of funny/cool stuff to see (check out my photos). The one dude working in the store was really nice and I chatted with him a bit on how I made my way to his store and he said my boss should send in his pics so they can display them on the TV in the store. Back when I lived in Seattle I knew their Flagship store was here and truly knew I wanted to check out the joy and freedom of wearing a kilt. At that time their sizing was rather precise and didn't give much leeway for eating an extra helping over the Holidays so I deferred. Fast forward several years and I had some rather serious and stern motivation to lose weight and, generally, start some healthier lifestyle choices. Figured that when I got to my target weight, or pretty close to it, that it would be time to do it. We found this amazing AirBnB right in Pioneer Square that we stayed in last fall right when I started the fitness/healthier eating adventure but we were back for a professional conference in March and I figured this was the time to do it. Super friendly and helpful staff, even offered me a free beer from the fridge while I shopped. They have redesigned their kilts for a bit more flexibility, glad I went in and tried them on as I was a size smaller even than I thought I would be. Had what I wanted in stock plus lots of other great accessories. Even gave me a free copy of a great book, "The Scottish Buddhist Cook Book", has some great little anecdotes and even a recipe or 2. I personally think they are a nice alternative to pants and shorts and I know that the gals I've dated just loved 'em...not to mention the easy access...YEAH BABY! I've gotten the "Nice Skirt" comment a time or two, snickers and the double takes, not just from strangers in public, but from friends as well, but I'm not wearing it for them, I'm wearing for myself and because it's hella comfortable. As for the company, they do treat you well and because it's all about word of mouth as most of the advertising is based on their customer base, they are as down to earth as a company can get. I actually like Utilikilts on men. I think they're sexy. Most of the guys pulling these things off *well* just seem to exude confidence. (By the way fellahs.. there are those of you who really don't pull it off well. You should take an honest look at yourself and figure out which category you fit into and act accordingly.) Anyways confidence in yourself is key to picking up women and the woman attracted to a man in a kilt is probably some thing special. Yeah, so Utilikilts are a bit odd. But hey I like a little... oddity... now and then. Besides, these kilts are not for the uptight, trend following slaves to corporate fashion. If you are into to Dockers or Levi's, these really aren't for you. Gothy, industrial, punk guys... I'll reckon you'll be far happier wearing one of these than some hapless fellow snatched from his shopping trip to the Gap. The quality of these things seems to be top-notch. They are heavy-duty reinforced canvas pleated kilts with these cool little rivets. Well made to be sure. The help we received in the store was polite and knowledgeable. Proper fit was insured. Ok - so 4 stars for overall product idea & execution. Here's where Utilikilts begins to lose stars: how you treat the women who want to wear your kilts. For the love of god we just want to support your damn business! Don't ask us to pay your high prices only so we can alter these ourselves. Can't you just make some that fit us properly in the first place? I know you have some weird idea that women wearing these things will turn them into skirts and hurt your manly image, but for crying out loud... women wearing pants doesn't make pants any less manly. I love this place. We recently stopped by on the Yelp Scavenger Hunt. We hadn't even crossed the street when dude runs out and screams: "HEY!!!! SCAVENGER HUNT"??? "YES"! We yelled back. "GREAT! YOU! (points to team member #2) GET IN HERE AND DROP YOUR PANTS"!!! We walked in and within mere seconds he had team member #2, without pants, measured and into a Utilikilt. Impressive. Even more impressive? He then told us about the Utilikilt that holds 20 beers. Not 5. Not 10. 20, people. 20! If I ever have a need for a Utilikilt or know anyone that does, I would happily refer them here. The 2 people working this day were beyond cool, friendly and helpful! "OOOOOOO...Big Viking Legs.....I like"....says my cute wife. Next thing you know I'm trying on a kilt with pockets that hold 20 beers! I said to the guy there, my wife wants me to try on a kilt...."Do you want to try on a kilt?" he replies. Yeah OK I'll do it. It was pretty awesome and freeing if you get my dangle. I tried one and it was a slight bit small so I tried another with a slight different material. It was funny you just face away from the guy, he wraps you with the kilt and you drop your pants, all right next to the rack. Debbie loved it on me and I was geared up to pick one up thinking, this might set me back a little in the dollar department. "Ok I like it, what is this going to run me?" "$360.00"....ok cool... I'll check out the sale rack or ebay or.....uh, maybe I don't need the kilt that bad. I knew it would cost a little bit assuming $100-160 but....yikes! At least he gave me the tip to order online or check ebay since he said guys drink too much and get too fat for their kilts. He told me I could always check them out at "Dragoncon"....dragon what? I guess I'm just not that hip to this whole kilt culture. All I know is the wife likes my beard and big legs and heritage and I'll do what I can to please.... After all I have the Scotish, Irish, Scandinavian mutt thing going so at least part of me belongs in this Kilt. I'm going to quietly sidestep the very observant point my friend Katy made about Utilikilts- that these have become THE icon of Seattle counterculture. Guys wear them. Girls wear them. I wouldn't be all that surprised to see a Great Dane in one soon. So lets talk about the Utilikilt, and its store in Pioneer Square. You have to be open-minded. First off, kilts are not girly. I dare you to look any of these guys (or their Scottish forebearers) and call them 'girly.' The guys are funny, irreverent and very frank. All the people who work here wear the product with pride. When you walk in, be prepared to turn around and drop trow. Right there in the middle of the store. Fortunately one of the guys is shielding you from the world with a utilikilt and in a few seconds, you are wearing one. There are a lot of varieties and styles- casual, sturdy, dressy. These aren't the woven plaid kilts of yore, they are meant to be modern. I was told when I went in that kilts will run a little bigger around the waist than your usual pair of pants, because they are worn differently. Try one out, at least for fun. Do it on a hot day, and enjoy the breeze. Would I get one? Heck yes. Once I raised the money! They are not cheap. They are comfortable, tongue-in-cheek to mainstream America, and amazingly practical. I am an Utilikilt fan. My first experience with them was my ex who wore an utilikilt when he went out dancing. The whole look makes me melt. I managed to talk my fiancée in to visiting this shop and checking out some kilts. He was instantly a fan. The gentleman who helped us out was really friendly. He spent most of the visits cracking jokes. He was in no way high pressure about closing the sale. He just let us try on style after style and kilt after kilt. It was a lot of fun. We ended up buying a khaki kilt that was set to be discontinued and discounted because of it. We are calling it my fiancée's starter kilt as we know he will be back for more. The prices are on par with the quality running $150-$500 depending on material and style. They are all constructed from thick material that appears very sturdy. These are definitely a man's garments meant to keep up with men doing strong manly things. *swoon* If you are headed in hear though leave your modesty at home because there is no dressing room. They will wrap you up and have you drop your drawers in front of G-d and everybody. It isn't as bad as it sounds. They also give you free beer so how can you beat that! Despite being closed at noon on a Friday, this place sells one thing. Or so it looked through the window... Kilts, but not your standard Scottish fare. They sell the utilikilt, a canvas kilt, made for the militant metal-head, or punk guy. They looked comfy and useful for hot days. I kinda want one. read more

My review is going to focus more on "Utilikilts, the store", rather than "Utilikilts, the product" or "Utilikilts, the website". Concerning the Utilikilt products: Either people like them or they truely hate them. The decision to buy one should be based off of what you, as a consumer wants, rather than some mixed reviews at some website. Disclosure: I own two utilikilts. I like them, and could care less about what others have to say about what I decide to wear. Also, my father, who is in a wheel chair, owns one utilikilt and is very happy with it. I had a great shopping experience at the Utilikilts store. My family and I were in the area as it was one of the stops on the way up to Alaska. We all were fairly impressed by the politeness and helpfulness of the Utilikilts employees. Our sales person was very friendly and did a great job of measuring my wheelchair-bound father. He worked with him to help him select the best utilikilt for him. If you are looking for something outside of the ordinary, and you like appreciate different articles of clothing (i.e. kilts), this would be a good store to check out. As a side note, virtually every Scottish person on my cruise (and there were a lot of them) thought the Utilikilt was pretty cool. read more

Men in kilts are usually fun, attractive and all-around great to hang out with. Utilikilts puts a great spin on kilt-wear, making them easy to wear and completely unisex. You will receive compliments for your Utilikilt. I've yet to wear mine without getting at least three strangers commenting on how comfy and cool (in both senses) the Utilikilt looks. They also make them with "beer gut" measurements, if you need a different "drape" to your kilt. I bought my first Utilikilt three years ago at a Scottish fair. They measure your hips to see what size you should get, then snap the kilt around you to provide a "dressing room" as you (or they!) remove your pants to allow the kilt to drape naturally, comfortably and gracefully. They use the same technique at the Utilikilt store in Pioneer Square. No dressing rooms, just you and your Utilikilt. Note: you may want to wear your snuggy underwear when trying on Utilikilts, lest your lacy underthings get caught on your pants when you yank them off. Not saying that this happened to me...just consider this a generic warning. Um, yeah. Anyway. The only thing reason I lowered the rating by a star is that the staff seemed a little too laid back. There were four of them in the shop that day and only two customers. I was obviously not window shopping as I announced my intention to purchase another Utilikilt....so they should have clued in that I'm a repeat customer. Instead, it took nearly 15 minutes for one of the dudes to actually measure me and when I'd made my selection, another 15 minutes to pay for it. If I didn't really want the thing, I'd have left waaaaay before then. So, be forewarned that you may have to be an aggressive shopper to actually get yourself Utilikilted. The reward is worth, it. These things are super-well constructed, extremely comfortable and the best value for your money. There's no parking specifically for the store, but there are on street parking spaces around and lots nearby. read more

Utilikilts is a fun little store with very friendly salespeople. At Utilikilts you don't use dressing rooms. You put the kilts on over your jeans. Once the kilt is in position, you unbutton your pants and let them fall to the floor. You can then shuffle around the store with your pants around your ankles to see how you look in the mirror. I didn't think I was ready to wear a skirt in public yet, so I chose a Spartan. Spartans are kilts made out of the same shiny fabric used in basketball shorts. Spartans are very comfortable for lounging around the house. read more

Utilikilts are a take-off on traditional kilts, but made less for ceremony and more for everyday wear. They come in khaki, denim, camo, all sorts of colors, and they actually have pockets. I have a friend who works there, and these really are cool, but pretty much for the guy who wants to stand out. I've tried one on and just couldn't come to grips with the air circulating around my crotch :-) You'll see them at all the fairs (they have a booth) but their HQ and store is right here in the Interbay section of town. read more

I was given a quick tour of the products upon entering and all my questions were answered regarding their quality crafted kilts. After some deliberation about the possibilities of me wearing an Utilikilt, I decided to get one. Well, I staggered by in my cowboy hat and Frye boots and decided my jeans had to go for the day. The adequately forceful gal behind the counter helped me strip in the middle of the store and get a nice OD green specimen slapped across my ass. The Kilt seems to be very sturdy and subsequently withstood two nights of being tugged upon in crowded bars. Let's just say it comes in very handy when kissin' handy gals. I docked them a star for belt availability. I really wanted a nice studded leather belt to go with it but they only had Danny Divito and Sumo sizes. Went in this morning after debating whether I wanted to purchase a kilt for the last couple of months. Walked in as soon as the store opened and received amazing customer service, got fitted right away, and had no high pressure sales tactics or other BS that I personally cannot stand when trying to purchase something. The quality of product that I received was well worth the price and you can shop right off the scratch and dent wall if you would like a bit of a discount. I'm a big guy and personally hate shopping for any clothes but even when dropping your pants in the middle of the store you still feel comfortable in this place!!! My husband used to live in the Seattle area, but moved shortly after the store opened and before he could buy one. He wanted to buy his first one in person so he could try them on and get the right size, rather than order online--so we actually planned a trip to Seattle specifically to go to this store. Great, friendly, laid-back & funny customer service. Hubby was briefly surprised at the no-dressing-room, but quickly got over it. The woman helping us was great. We bought one and plan to get more for him in the future. The woman helping us was also wearing a Utilikilt, and it looked so cool on her that I briefly considered getting one for myself.
