Stopped in to visit Utilikilts to try on one of their kilts - the "original" model. As others have stated - there is no dressing room - an employee will wrap the kilt around you and you then drop your pants and snap the kilt in place try it on. I was surprised at first and thought they were kidding - but quickly realized they were not and got over my mild discomfort. The Utilikilts are awesome! Found my size with the help of the guys. I own a couple of traditional kilts - but soon will be buying a Utilikilt or two. Can't wait!

So when my boss bought a few of these Utilikilts a while back, we all thought it was pretty funny (especially the kind with a special "beer cut" for the more zaftig utilikilt afficianados). I had no idea they were in Seattle, but when I saw them on the tourist map I told my friend we had to check it out. So we made our way to Pioneer Square to visit the store like a couple of religious pilgrims or something. It turned out to be a hoot and a half--lots of funny/cool stuff to see (check out my photos). The one dude working in the store was really nice and I chatted with him a bit on how I made my way to his store and he said my boss should send in his pics so they can display them on the TV in the store. If you're in the area it might be worth popping in to check it out.

Back when I lived in Seattle I knew their Flagship store was here and truly knew I wanted to check out the joy and freedom of wearing a kilt. At that time their sizing was rather precise and didn't give much leeway for eating an extra helping over the Holidays so I deferred. Fast forward several years and I had some rather serious and stern motivation to lose weight and, generally, start some healthier lifestyle choices. Figured that when I got to my target weight, or pretty close to it, that it would be time to do it. We found this amazing AirBnB right in Pioneer Square that we stayed in last fall right when I started the fitness/healthier eating adventure but we were back for a professional conference in March and I figured this was the time to do it. Super friendly and helpful staff, even offered me a free beer from the fridge while I shopped. They have redesigned their kilts for a bit more flexibility, glad I went in and tried them on as I was a size smaller even than I thought I would be. Had what I wanted in stock plus lots of other great accessories. Even gave me a free copy of a great book, "The Scottish Buddhist Cook Book", has some great little anecdotes and even a recipe or 2. Check out the amazing hand made set of bagpipes on display, quite amazing story about how he made them.

We walked in and within mere seconds he had team member #2, without pants, measured and into a Utilikilt.

Chrissy then created the dress from scratch, with customizations and specific colors I requested. Chrissy is very nice and a joy to work with, and I got many compliments on my unique and beautiful dress. Highly recommend Chrissy and Wai Ching Studio. P.s. in addition to gorgeous, high-quality dresses, she also makes amazing silk face masks.

There's off-white, cream, ivory, blush and so on and so on, but lavender is a runway color that isn't mass produced. You can imagine my disappointment to find out my options were bridesmaid dresses that didn't have the right 'look'. Then, someone on WeddingWire (forum) recommended looking into a custom made. I wasn't ready to break the bank, and any time I hear "custom made", I freak out a little bit inside. Then I reached out to Chrissy who assured me I can have the dress I want AND it would be affordable. Chrissy was flexible, polite, professional and took all of my ideas into consideration and collaborated on a design with me. The dress needed to be able to withstand humidity as it was going to be designed for a destination wedding in Miami, and accommodate to my dancing (which I did plenty of). During our first fitting, we realized fit-flare just wasn't going to cut it and Chrissy asked how I felt about going closer to mermaid or trumpet design. I was hesitant, but knew I would be in good hands. When I tell you my husband damn near fainted when he saw me, and how our guests' jaws dropped, I can confirm it was all worth it. Chrissy designed a dress that was just for me: simple, elegant, lace accents, and lavender. The wedding dress of my dreams.

I wound up changing a handful of small details such as the shirt I was wearing as our venue decorations changed so this isn't 100% the suit I got. Jeff's attention to detail though was fantastic and my changes certainly don't reflect on him or the quality of this suit which is impeccable. I spoke with a few bespoke suit places and Jeff just got my style the best. While other suits were beautiful, I think the small details Jeff payed attention to and some of his designs for the more modern person. Pockets for days! Jeff was super friendly, accommodating and helpful. My lady requested a swatch of fabric to help tie together the Father's and best man's suit with mine and he was able to accommodate. All in all...I highly suggest giving Jeff a try. He was great and look forward to the next one.

The "funny" thing is I was wearing one of the suits I purchased from him in 2008. Still fits great. I wore a different sport coat and slacks into the office earlier this week from closer to 2006 and my office mates thought I got new clothes. They might cost more than an off-the-rack suit but I promise you that once you wear a custom suit, shirt or slacks you won't want to go back. And of course the cost per wear is pretty low after almost 20 years. And they aren't being removed from my closet. Jeff is super personable and not pushy. He knows his stuff and you'll look great and feel great because looking good is feeling good.
