Awesome little shop! I was visiting my sister and her family for the weekend and wanted to get them a couple of pastries to thank them for letting me stay over. I picked up two eclairs (one chocolate hazelnut and one buttercream, the chocolate was better) and a chocolate hazelnut cream puff. It was excellent! Not only were the pastries delicious, but the staff were super friendly! My family and I loved them, so much so I decided to swing back by there before heading home to Florida to pick up another eclair for my fiance. It was well worth the trip. If you do go here (and I highly recommend you do) it is in a little trailer just past a few building, you can't miss it. read more

I've been wanting to try Utica Bakery for a while now and finally make the trip over last Saturday. The dessert trailer was easy to find and there were plenty of signs clearly marking where to turn if you weren't using your GPS. I'm from New England and am always on the hunt for some good Italian pastries which you can't seem to find much of in NC. Seriously, it is so hard to find a good cannoli! I liked how they displayed all their tasty treats behind glass so you could easily figure out what you wanted to order. My husband and I went for three of their stuffed rolls and a sampling of desserts. The pepperoni roll was my favorite and something I would definitely get again. The sausage and ham rolls were good, but for me pepperoni reigned supreme. On to the sweet treats! They unfortunately left one of my cookies out of the box, but the lemon drop cookie was awesome. Just what you would want in this classic Italian treat. I also thoroughly enjoyed the cannoli. It was definitely the closest to what I'm use to up North that I have been able to find in the South. I have literally been craving a lobster tail for years and their flaky delicious lobster tail layers did not disappoint. They have different fillings you can chose for the lobster tail. I asked what the traditional filling was (since that is what I was craving), turns out it is pastry cream mixed with whipped cream, I went that route! You could also get a chocolate hazelnut filling which also sounded delicious. My husband went with the cheesecake with blueberry compote. The cheesecake was good, but the amount of blueberry compote they include on the side was way too tiny. I know they have a different name for it here, but I wish they sold their part pizza in strips, not just by the half pan. I would have loved to try out a slice for lunch, but didn't need more than that. For those of you not from up North, party pizza is as the name implies a birthday party staple. It's pizza dough with sweetened tomato sauce and that's it. No melted cheese so it's perfect for a party since it doesn't rely on temperature. I look forward to heading out here again when I'm craving some tasty Italian baked goods! read more

Absolutely unbelievable pastries and breads. My family loved the stuffed rolls - especially the pepperoni but also the spinach Asiago. My favorite sweet was the tiramisu, and my husband's favorite was the cheesecake. My stepdaughters liked the sfogliatelle and lobster tail, and my stepson loved the cannoli. Great place to stop by for a treat in an adorable location! The workers are incredible friendly, and made sure that we were happy with the product. I tried a cold brew and cream puff with chocolate hazelnut cream. The coffee was flavorful and I didn't need any flavor or cream added (even though there are lots of options). One of the "neat things" about traveling is those little reminders that bring you back home. The name of this Apex, NC bakery is spot on as the owner(s) have roots in the Utica, NY Italian bakery business. Some of my first experiences with Italian bakeries (and specifically tomato pie) were when I traveled over to Utica from Syracuse. Owner was handing out amazingly good samples of Focaccia bread. Either he recognized folks waiting in the blistering heat, or he simply wanted to spread the love of his cooking. Either way, all who sampled seemed very appreciative of his kindness. As we arrived later in the day on a Sunday, many options were sold out. Not to be deterred, my son and I enjoyed two delicious cream puffs with chocolate hazelnut filling. Would not hesitate to go back here again. Highly recommend! read more

I came here on Christmas Eve to try and recreate an NJ tradition in NC. My dad and I used to pick up pastries every Christmas Eve together to enjoy that night. I definitely had high standards heading into this trip and was surprised to find that Utica bakery did not disappoint! We waited 1.5 hours in line in the rain (I should have gone much earlier in the day!). I was impressed with how they treated their customers in line - they had umbrellas available and one of their workers came down the line with free cookies at one point. They were out of the chocolate hazelnut puffs when we got to the front, but we were able to get everything else I was looking for. Eclairs, pastaciotti, canoli, and rainbow cookies. I thought I wasn't a fan of rainbow cookies, but these were delicious! The eclairs were huge. I didn't try the canoli, but my favorite might have been the blueberry pastaciotti. I had never seen blueberry before! The only disappointing thing was the spinach bread. It was very expensive for the amount they gave us. I won't get that again. Otherwise, I look forward to going back, maybe on a less busy day! read more

I haven't been to the actual bakery as they delivered samples to the local emergency room I work at. The black and white cookies are A-MAZ-ING. This is my favorite dessert place, I literally clap every time I come and go from here... which if I weren't trying to stay in my same pants size would be more often! Utica is an Italian pastry shop with all of the classics (cannoli, baba, wedding cookies, sfagliotelle, etc). In my opinion, Italian pastries are the best. They typically feature lemon, almond and cream and are not overly sweet. My favorite pastry is the lobster tail which you can select to fill with whipped cream, pastry cream or cannoli filling (any are a good choice). Here's the thing, when I have a good experience, I give credit where credit is due. When I have a bad experience, I have to advise of that as well. We're having company for dinner and I decided to stop at the bakery I had heard about. I ordered 4 cannolis (plain) and 1 chocolate eclair. As you can see from the pictures, the filling in the cannoli is runny and oozing out into the box (for context, it took me 10 min to get home in 40 degree weather, so it didn't melt in the heat). Furthermore, the filling isn't traditional plain at all, it is lemon-flavored and very unappetizing. On to the eclair. What the heck with the size?! Pen for scale. Bigger is not better. It is over baked and crunchy inside and out (not the desired texture ) and has a mountain of pastry cream. It is inedible. Husband I decided to just throw the whole box out rather than serve it to guests. This was my first experience with Utica and maybe they were having a really bad day, but I personally won't be giving them a second chance when I can drive 15 minutes further to La Farm and be guaranteed an excellent product. read more

I liked the concept of this food truck/ store front and the staff is really sweet, they answer all your questions really well and even gave us a free half moon cookie. However, I don't think the pastries were worth more stars. The portions are huge, the cream puff was sufficient for 4 people to share hahah, and the almond croissant was nice but a little too sweet. The hazelnut cream mini puff was alright, but I do not think the pastries are as special as they're hyped to be, they're more of a sugary dessert than anything else but I hope they continue to innovate and improve their offering as there is a dearth of good pastries and bakeries in the area. read more

My pastries were surprises. ( I asked the cashier to just give me anything good) IThe cashier was super friendly. When she said "I hope you enjoy your surprise pastry" I knew they deserved 5 stars before I even tried the food. Great customer service and employees, very upbeat and welcoming. I've tried a couple of things and I can recommend the cheesecake, eclairs and the cannolis were fantastic! However, the tiramisu was not a tiramisu. It's more like a super sweet dense chocolate cake (cake couldn't eat it) I propose that the name be changed to a avoid major disappointment and unnecessary cost. I would love it if the bakery would make the real delicious tiramisu. The lobster tail and the sfogliatella were mediocre, the shells were stale and rubbery.
