I always try to give government agencies, such as the United States Post Office, the benefit of the doubt. They are underpaid, overworked, super stressed out and running at the mercy of an antiquated system. They are frustrated, to say the least. So whenever I visit a USPS location, I go in with a big amount of patience. Usually, I find it pays off, and the wait/hassle is not as bad as I imagined. That was before I began frequenting the Hawthorne USPS location on Inglewood Blvd.
I'd love to do a pros and cons list. But that's nearly impossible here. So I'll just list off a couple features they have, then get to the "cons:"
They do have an automated stamp-buying machine, and they also have a dedicated window to dropping off pre-paid postage items. No line, no wait, just go in, drop your item off, and go about your merry way.
Umm... yeah that's about it. So on the "cons."
Parking sucks! There is a parking lot in the back, but I only discovered this by accident one day when driving down the next street over. There are no "clear" signs to tell you that there is another, much larger, lot in the back. And from the front, you cannot even see that there is another lot.
No exterior drop-off boxes. Okay, look, I'm not complaining about not having a drive-up box (which would be nice), I'm talking about no boxes at all outside of the branch! WTF!? Even if all you want to do is drop a letter off in the mail, you have to park (good luck) and go inside. And if you end up having to park in the back, this means a long walk from the back to the front to get to where the mail slots are. They have actually added two blue mailboxes, but they are still INSIDE the building!!! That makes no sense!!! And the walk is a long one (to drop off a letter if you park in the back). I'd say a good 100 yards from car to box round trip. That's football field length.
The layout is horrible. If you need forms or envelopes or boxes, and you haven't been to this branch a few times before, good luck with trying to find what you're looking for. There is no clear organization scheme at work here. Just get in where you fit in. And unless it's not even slightly busy in there, forget about finding anyone to help you.
On my last two visits, I listened to people in line talk about how they came in to drop of some mail (a packages in one case, a letter with an important check in it the other) and experienced a nightmare. The package was not delivered until after the person trying to mail it came back in about a week later to inquire about it, at which time the package was "resent/reprocessed." As for the person who'd sent the checks, she mentioned they arrived three weeks later even though the city they were being mailed two was only about an hour and half drive from Hawthorne (with traffic). If I'd heard these stories a few months apart, it wouldn't be a big deal. But to hear two stories like this in 8 days time???
Okay, now let's get to the service. I'll have to break this up into sections:
SPEED - there is none. There appears to be only one worker there (usually at the left-most window) who works at a quick pace. The rest are snails.
POLITE - forget about it. Though I've never experienced this, I imagine the politeness of these workers to be on par with an ornery Catholic School Nunn with a penchant for slamming Bibles on kids' hands.
CURETEOUS - hmmmm. Remember what I said about the conditions they work under? Just keep that in mind. That being said, I've seen them "all" ignore people in line who were just trying to get close to the window to ask where they might find a form.
KNOWLEDGABLE - to an extent. I have experienced it myself, and witnessed others go through this as well, getting to a window only to be told what I was trying to do wasn't possible. Then to be guided to one worker (I'm guessing a manager???) who magically fixed the problem in just a few seconds. I'm just sayin...
So yeah. If you need a Post Office, go to another. Trust me, you're better off taking the time to drive 10 -15 minutes away to another USPS location if you need the full service. Your wait time here is going to be more than that anyway. And if you need to just drop a letter (not a package) in the mail, save yourself the hassle and drive up to Hawthorne BLVD, west side of the street between Bank of America and Chase, and you'll find a blue USPS mailbox sitting nearby. read more
