Neither staff member working felt remotely burdened to move the long line along any faster than they wanted to at their unhurried pace, which meant a half hour wait for a 2 min. transaction with zombied staff on autopilot. When the "survey" popped up on the little screen asking about my experience, I booped on the sad face to which the staff member - who was clearly watching me select my answer to the survey - replied, "Oh. That's funny. Real funny." She voided the transaction (that had gone through) after I left the building and my parents' Christmas present was returned to my house the following day. In case you ever wondered who's that vindictive, she works at the Elmwood Post Office. One wonders what oversight management plays here. read more

They should receive below zero stars at this Post Office. The workers here have done nothing less than try to sabotage my life. It's a long story and I don't want to write it all out. After horrible, aggressive and rude and dishonest treatment and service I decided to move my PO Box to another site. However, they were delayed by months in forwarding my mail, the majority of my mail was returned to sender, only random pieces were forward once in awhile. Yes, I have contacted people who send me mail but for sure there's places I have missed. I have made complaints to the regional office and they misinterpret what I have told them. Nothing at all has been done to correct the situation, It has cost me $100's of dollars and lots of lost time and aggravation. Even the clerk at my current Post Office commented that the Elmwood site is the absolute worst because she sometimes has to work there. I give them negative 100 stars. read more

Quick service, with no line. Not quite friendly, but I won't complain because it was very efficient. There are only seven parking spots and the parking lot is often full. Usually it turns over pretty quickly, but I doubt that everyone parked here is actually in the post office. read more

Poor customer service. Walked in with my husband and we were not even greeted . The two employee were having a conversation between them and completed ignored us. Even after I greeted them. When they finally helped us (after they were done talking to each other) they had attitude like we were a bother. We will avoid this office in the future. In all my years going to post offices, I have appreciated the courteous, friendly service. This was an exception. I was trying to decide between two postage stamp designs, but the clerk charged be for both. It was a simple misunderstanding. But when I told the clerk that I only wanted one, she became incredibly rude to me. And when a window appeared on the touch screen appeared asking me to rate the service, she herself reached in and touched the smiley face (top rating). I wonder how often she has done that--giving herself top rating instead of allowing customers to rate her service? In the future I will use a different USPS location. read more

I've had mixed experiences at this, the closest post office to me. Some of the employees are friendly and very good at their job. Some, not so much. Last year I had dropped off two packages at the counter, then was told they didn't need to be scanned at that branch but when it gets to Oakland (not true) and there was nothing I could do about it. I investigated, made a call and was able to get one tracked to Georgia and the other was lost. More recently a couple of weeks ago, the same worker was at the counter. I was third in line. He took a long time with the person at the counter. During that time more folks got in line so there were five of us. As soon as he finished with that person he said he was closed because they were short staffed. We were all furious. I understand being short staffed, but he couldn't even tell me when he would be back. He could have informed those waiting in line that he had to close after his customer. Instead he waited until the line built up, then told us he was closed with no further information. Very unprofessional. Even with prepaid packages I wait in long lines to make sure they actually scan my packages which wastes a lot of time. read more

Officially my favorite post office location! This location in Elmwood is so convenient and the service is honestly top tier. I used to frequent the larger Oakland location on Telegraph but finally got tired of dealing with the nightmare that place is. No parking, super long lines, and rude service. Yeah, no thanks. I'll stick to the wonderful staff in Elmwood! I love that they have a dedicated parking lot. You don't always see this in Berkeley, so it's definitely convenient. Sometimes it does get full but there's also several places to park out on the street. The lines can be hit or miss; sometimes there's no line and other times it can get pretty deep. But one thing's for sure; they keep that line movin' and groovin'. The lines usually move pretty fast. And the best part about this post office?! The customer service! They've consistently provided excellent service here. Even when the line is out the door, these folks are always cool, calm, and collected. The staff is so friendly, helpful, and polite. I never feel rushed and they're always willing to answer any questions that I may have about costs and services. I don't think that anyone gets excited to go to the post office these days, but it's always nice to have a pleasant experience when you have to. read more

On 4/24/23 at around 233pm, I went to drop off an envelop for certified mail. Thinking it would be a simple encounter, it turned out to be an encounter where I was racially profiled. At the encounter we asked for certified mail. We were handed a small slip to fill out the address where it will be sent (a simple quick task but we were quickly dismissed and told that we weren't ready to be in line). We were immediately told to go to the back counter around the corner to fill it out. There was only one white person behind us. The two customers that were ahead of us were white and one even was refusing to put a return address on the package she was shipping. The USPS person Roy however was patient with her and eventually got her to fill it out with him at the register. Because we were asian we were told to go to the back counter. Roy and the other USPS employee (without a name tag) started to bad mouth us. While my partner was filling it out in the back I went to wait in the front area. I allowed another customer to pass me. The employees both started to yell at me why I am waiting there when they told me to go to the back... USPS please review video footage and investigate why they are treating asian customers differently. Given what I shipped was for Alameda county I am hoping my envelop is not destroyed by these employees? Assuming this would be a federal offense. read more

Maureen. She is the meanest person. Horrible customer service, belittles you!! I asked for help, she didn't give it to me, charged me for an envelope I told her I brought with me from home and came in a day earlier to buy it and said I never did. Gave me the wrong tape, I had to take it off and generate a QR code luckily. Literally a terrible terrible person. I work in customer service and we are in charge of how we make others feel or how their day will go and she put mine in the worst mood. Was literally harassed and threatened by Roy, wanted a normal envelope to mail out since I had a lot to write on, he refused to give me one and said that's the only one we have, than I asked the woman who gave me one right away! glad the employees enjoy their job so much that they're able to chit chat and take their sweet time when there's a sprawling line out the door. the only woman working at the counter spent an alarming amount of time helping each person in front of me, with a growing line reaching the front door behind me. her service included but was not limited to, commenting on the name on the package, asking about the city it's going to, double, triple checking every detail. she was getting a thrill out of the impatience throughout the room and behaving so passive aggressively. i've noticed a general attitude of entitlement among USPS workers that needs to be addressed and unlearned. read more

Let's be honest-I don't think anyone goes to the post office looking for a good time (unless you have a stamp fetish or unusual thoughts about post office boxes). I'm always dreading the long lines and figuring out the arcane intricacies and pricing related to mailing. On a whim, I decided to be brave and go to this Rockridge office instead of my usual Berkeley/Oakland branches. I should have factored that everyone is mailing everything with the holiday season upon us, and the line was already by the front door when I entered. However, there was a warm greeter who asked if I was here for mail pickup vs. mailing items, and the line moved expeditiously. By the time I got to the counter, I was pleasantly surprised at how patient the employee was despite the hustle and bustle happening around her. I'm definitely gonna come back here! read more

I recently received someone's mail in my box that was sent from Alameda County Superior court. This person's box number WASN'T EVEN CLOSE to my box number. I am sure that this poor guy's mail was extremely important coming from Superior court. I don't check my box often so I have no idea how long that person had been waiting for their mail. With that in mind, it makes me question this post office's attention to detail and accountability. It makes me uncomfortable that the person putting mail in boxes may either be dyslexic or just doesn't care where their placing the mail. This post office needs to make it a priority that mail is being placed in the correct boxes. read more

I have been to this location two times and both times had a good experience. The staff is friendly and there are two people behind the desk usually. They are very helpful and answer all questions which is very nice. I was sending an envelope to another country and the staff guided me on the best possible options ( time and money) for me which is appreciated a lot. Usually people will just try to rush you so the line can move along but here they actually tried to help me which was super ! A small line usually forms because the hours of operation are limited. The post office is located in a nice neighbourhood surrounded by lots of restaurants and cafes. They also sell stamps ( very cool ones actually), shipping supplies and greeting cards. Had a very positive experience at this USPS. Service was quick, there was no line at all (around 11am) and despite the size, there was a significant amount of inventory for postage items you may need. It was well cleaned and organized and I was in then out in under 5 minutes. Will definitely come back again. read more

I am very upset with the customer service at this post office. I arrived at a few minutes before 5, yes, but only because I was struggling with the USPS website that I use all the time but refused to print a Priority Mail label for me. The employee looked at me and closed the gate when I arrived. I asked if I could come in and she refused, talking to me through the closed gate. Could they have not taken 2 minutes to help me? Between terrible service at the post office and online systems that are not reliable, I don't know how the post office thinks it will stay in business. I'd give them a zero if I could. Absolutely horrible women that were in charge of answering the calls. Had an issue with the package being marked as delivered but was never delivered (it seems that I'm not the only one who's had this happen). The woman on the phone made it sound like there was no way her carrier person could've made a mistake and won't even bother looking into it. Told me to call the police for stolen package but there has never ever been a stolen package in my neighborhood. If I were to call the police it would be to report that woman for lying to me and I would sue her for my missing package. I have a live critter in the package and to have it not delivered on time would result in its DEATH!! No apologies were given for my missing package but a tone of "well, you're screwed then" attitude. They should fire the people there and hire new workers that actually need a job and are willing to do their job respectfully and responsibly. I had alway had an order of a live critter ordered and shipped correctly back in San Jose. This makes me see Berkeley as a horrible place. I'm already tallying up reasons why Berkeley would not be a great place to live in and this would be one of them. Postal women workers with attitude are not acceptable. Next time I'm going to have to pay extra for insurance but at least if it's lost, it'll be their office that forks out and apology and payment. read more

I believe this place/new manger is discriminating against Roy because of his Gender. She won't let him wear his post office hat, and continues to harass him. I think she's trying to force him out because he is the only male that works there. This is discrimination and I would get an employment lawyer. When I go in there there is always a problem unless Roy is there. They " lost " my passport for 3 weeks. I asked Roy to look for it and he found it in two minutes. It was in the box next to mine for three weeks. I had the State Department tracking my passport because they thought it had been stolen. Let Roy wear his hat. The people of Berkeley love Roy, and Roy is family. If Roys not happy, we aren't happy. We want new management. We want Roy to be the new manager. read more

So, my mailbox has been in the same location for the last 60 years (presumably, the house only had one previous owner and we did not change the location) and for the last 19 years (definitely). On Dec. 15th, 2020, I received a note stating that I needed to move my mailbox for a variety of reasons (set back too far, not facing the right way, inaccessible without getting out of vehicle, and obstacles in the way [an outright lie]). Of course there was no mention of 'where' to move the mailbox. There's also the fact that most mailboxes (including my immediate neighbors and a host of other houses on my street) violate some, most, or all of the stipulations that were given to me. USPS followed through on their threat to suspend my mail on Dec. 21, 2020 if I did not switch the mailbox to a different (?) location and I have not received any mail since then. One has to wonder, who signs off on suspending someone's mail service a few days before Christmas in a pandemic? Is this really someone we want in public service and where is the accountability?! Why is the USPS not spending this much effort and energy on more pressing matters, such as rampant mail theft? read more

The service provided by USPS overall and by this location in particular is excellent. I generally use USPS for all my shipping needs, both domestic and international. The website is really convenient. If you have a good scale, you can print labels at home and skip the line. Oh, by the way, you get a nice little discount for doing that! Especially given the price, USPS is reliable and speedy. I also discovered it's far more secure for valuable shipments. I wanted to ship a piece of jewelry. Went to the big commercial shippers first (UPS/FedEx). They would not insure for more than $1,000. If they don't trust themselves, why should I? I went to USPS and asked what the best option would be. They told me the Hope Diamond, worth more than $200 million, was shipped via USPS registered mail. The person I asked was so kind and really went out of her way - she provided me a box, and did all the taping herself to make sure it would be right. Do yourself a favor and support your local post office! read more

I went recently on a Saturday to mail three items: 1) A prepaid, and prelabeled return package: No problems dropping it off. 2) License plates back to another state: I needed a legal sized flat rate envelope. They did not carry the legal size there, so I went home and ordered it online for free (a pack of 10). 3) Documents using Priority Mail Flat Rate International (to Canada). I had the most problems with the third item. I always go to the post office knowing what I need and how much it costs. The USPS website very plainly shows that Priority Mail International Flat Rate costs $23.95 and includes USPS Tracking. I requested this envelope from the employee at the counter, and she said it would cost $30. When I said it was $23.95 online, she said "Ok" and gave me the flat rate envelope, address label, and customs form to fill out. I stepped aside to fill in the form and seal the envelope. When I was ready, she took me back and rung me up. I asked for the tracking number, and she insisted that tracking was only available on Priority Mail International EXPRESS. The International Flat Rate Express envelope costs $39.45. I told her the USPS website said Priority Mail International (not Express) includes a tracking number, but she refused to accept that. I asked for my envelope back and went home. Now that I had the Priority Rate envelope, I went to USPS.com and printed my own label using Click and Ship, paid $23.95 as expected, and dropped it off at the Downtown Berkeley Post Office on Allston Way. The label printed with a tracking number, and I can see using USPS tracking online that it's already been mailed out of the country. I would not recommend this post office location if you are doing anything other than dropping off pre-paid and pre-labeled mail/packages. Clearly, there is a knowledge gap, and failure to acknowledge that knowledge gap. For every other person she helped in line, I wondered how wrong she was whenever she told them what service they needed and how much it cost. read more

The only thing I don't like about this post office is that there is not automated stamp machine, but that's not their fault. Thus, -0 stars. The employees here are so friendly, and they are efficient. If you think it's taking a long time to get served, just watch the counter. Okay? Now wait for a long pause in the transaction. Great. Now see who's holding it up? It's the guy who thought he could ship a cat in a paper bag. Just stuff the cat in the bag, put a label on it, good to go. So the employee has to wait while the dude gets his cat parcel-ready. Not the employee's fault, -0 stars. Once I was the last person in the post office after closing, and the youngish guy behind the counter spent about ten minutes sharing some *very* valuable life advice, that I simply cannot repeat here. +20 stars. Oh, back to those postage machines. For a while there was an official sign on the inoperative machine that said, approximately, "For your convenience, this machine will no longer be in service." We made a stop after one of my regular kaiser appointments. I had a pkg to mail to my brother and a couple of pkgs for people from my paperbackswap.com club. There was no line! A very pleasant clerk helped me. She patiently counted out the postage on the assortment of 37cent and 39 cent stamps I had affixed to the pkgs. I picked up some Batman forever stamps--YES! She commented in disbelief how the majority of customers did NOT want the Batman stamps. I totally agreed with her. read more

I got here, grabbed my flat rate box, went to my car, stuffed the box, sealed the box, went back inside, took a number, went to the counter when my number was called, completed the address info on the box, paid, added insurance, got my receipt, and strolled on out the door. Having the number system lets you know this place is about organization and order. The employees behind the counter are pleasant and cordial and they make it easy to get in and out quickly. This is the worst post office I've ever been to. A few months ago I witnessed two workers arguing with their supervisor about time they could leave or take their break - it was around noon on a Saturday and completely busy. It led to the employee and supervisor going into the back, arguing and screaming so loud. There's also always a line here - they usually have only one register open, with another employee wandering around the desk and back. Also, it seems that around 95% of the employees here do not care about being here at all. Some are way worse than others. It's sad that our postal system has come to this. read more

Over the last two years the US Postal workers working at the distribution center have stolen approximately $4000.00 worth of silver coins from me and they have also cut open one package and resealed it leaving no note of explanation. Apparently the Postal worker wanted to see if the coins were valuable enough to risk getting fired for taking them. There was one incidence of the entire package of coins from Australia being stolen and one incidence of $2300.00 worth of silver Canadian maple coins being taken from the box and left for the mailman who delivers my mail to be blamed for stealing them. A resealed empty box was left on my door step. I guess I was supposed to believe a thief on my doorstep would be taking contents of a package and then sealing it back up. Packages can not even be seen on my doorstep from the street or sidewalk because there is no line of sight. A lame excuse was given to me that the mailman was allowed to claim he obtained my signature even though I was not even home at the time due to "covid 19". The coin dealer did not refund my money as the post office lied about getting my signature. There was then a third instance where the package was ripped open and entire contents of coins were stolen by the postal worker. The supervisor at the local Post office told me the package was already ripped open when he received it from the mail transfer center. I reported all of the thefts to the Postal Inspector General who failed completely to arrest the Postal worker or workers commiting these thefts. I thought theft of the US mail was supposed to be a Federal crime but apparently in the city of Oakland California the Postal workers are allowed to take anything they want with no consequence. Perhaps they can use covid-19 as an excuse to allow these thefts to continue? If they can not figure out which worker is stealing the mail it seems to me they should just fire everyone and start all over. read more

I waited 20 mins in line for one person to be serviced, but then when I stepped up to send my package the jerk woman who worked there started checking other packages behind the counter in. There were 7-10 people in line behind me (including a blind man) who sighed and asked if she could help us first. She frowned and pointed to the counter behind and snapped, you should already have that filled out. I said, "fuck that" and walked out. I will be using FedEx or a private mail services from now on. Attitude. Attitude. Attitude. Worst customer service I have ever received. The two workers at the counter were super condescending to not only me, but everyone in line ahead of me and behind me. They made it apparent that they hated their job and everyone they were helping. When I asked for postage tape to tape my return box and the label onto the box, the man helping me tried to sell me an entire roll. It was not until I tried to explain to him that most post offices offer complementary tape that he then offered a cheaper option of tape strips. read more

This post office is often out of stamps. Front counter needs to get an upbeat service attitude. A bit friendlier, please! I wanted to send a box. It was tapped with clear tape and duct. "NO DUCT TAPED boxes at the US post office !!!", You need to do this and this......" Thanks but no thanks, I went to the UPS store down the street and got my package on the way with a smile from the person behind the counter. Nice! Consumers do have Choices. These experiences with the post office lead me to the conclusion that It may be a good idea to privatize the Front office of the Postal service. read more
