Coming here is convenient since it's located within walking distance. The employees are very pleasant and keep the line (if there is a line) moving quickly. For those of us who still send snail mail, it's very much appreciated. What I remember about this P.O. (from two separate occasions) was the bad attitude of the women who worked there. Their service was not only terrible, but it also carried lots of bad vibes. I did not take it personally because it seemed as though anyone who was Caucasian was the target. The "enemy." I did not grow up in Oakland or Berkeley so I knew that it would not be a sleigh ride with everyone holding hands and smiling. Certainly this place confirmed what I had been told. And it was not just a local thing because I'd experienced extreme rudeness at a Hertz rental counter in Chicago. It's very sad because at times it seems that people treat others who are different with suspicion. I've been here for twenty minutes so far. My pizza is growing cold. There are only two workers who work at such a snail pace. The older black male worker was so rude and arrogant to this girl waiting in line longer than I have. She said she needed to get to class and that she was next in line and since this shop works on getting a numbered ticket she was next. Tiny, tiny post office sandwiched in an alley on Durant right by the Asian Ghetto. When I come here, I try to come at opening time, because every other time of the day is packed with a loooooong line, and it takes forever to wait for your turn. I just bring a book or flash cards to pass the time. At least when it's my turn, the clerk gets the job done. Based on my visits, the employees at 2515 1/2 Durant Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 provide good and commendable pre-delivery services, as opposed to bad and condemnable pre- delivery services. They strive to build business on clear and transparent business practices, rather than opaque and shady ones. A short, leisurely five- minute stroll from UC Berkeley and, taking the more scenic route, a 30- minute walk from the Gourmet Ghetto, aka "the birthplace of California Cuisine," this is a fine place to see off your mail, domestic and abroad. I went in just yesterday morning and was immediately greeted by two courteous ladies behind the cash register who secured my mail, and returned a lovely receipt detailing critical facts of the transaction, a tracking number, and a link at the bottom sending customers over to a website with a one- minute anonymous survey for feedback. If USPS wasn't the cheapest way to send a package, I would never come to the post office. The post office here is absolutely terrible. First off, good luck finding the place. It is literally hidden from plain sight and unless a friend points out the location, you will surely miss it. The place is always packed and they are greatly understaffed so you have to wait upwards of 30 minutes to get to the counter. On more than a few occasions, I was told to fill out a form or whatever and the person told me to line up again! Fast forward another 30 minutes and I have now sent off what I needed. If you do not live right next to this post office (as I do) GO ELSEWHERE. This has to be the most dismal and hostile post office I've ever set foot in. There is always a long ass line that is serviced by only two extremely slow and unproductive workers that relish in torturing customers, making them wait for nearly an hour, and losing their packages. I've mailed several boxes from this location and two of them never made it to their intended destination. Pitiful. UGH... That pretty much sums up my experience at this establishment. I tried to go in with an open mind, even though my previous visits to this post office have been unpleasant. I would hate to work at such a gray, poorly lit, and overall depressing office, but still good customer service should be possible! So on today's visit there were two attendants, one female and one male; being understaffed the line seemed to exponentially grow at a rapid pace (boo). I stood there patiently waiting to send my package express mail and prayed to get the female attendant because she seemed much more cheery than the other worker. I was in the middle of filling out my express mail tags when my number gets called. Unfortunately, it's the male worker. As I step up to his desk, in an impatient and condescending manner he tells me to step aside until I finish writing the labels. Sir, I am not a five year old, so please don't speak to me like I'm one. Honestly, you can't wait five seconds for me to finish writing one more word? I tried to remain calm though because I needed my mail to get to my destination on time. So then I walk back up to the guy, and he gives me this very "bored" look as if I'm greatly inconveniencing him-whatever... so I put my package in a special express mail envelope and hand it over to him, and yet again he says in his condescending voice, "close it PLEASE"... I do as he "asks", and he continues to callously treat me like I'm an incompetent child. All I could think of as this transaction was occurring was "Man I cannot WAIT to go back home and Yelp this". I politely asked for a number of stamps multiple times and the clerk wouldn't give them to me because he said it might not be enough for what I wanted to send. When I asked him how much it would be, he said he didn't know - but apparently he knew enough to keep saying it wasn't enough! Basically I was held at the counter for an extra five minutes (not exaggerating) because he wouldn't just give me the stamps I wanted. It was worse because he was so condescending. This place is a hit or miss - but mostly a miss. I've been coming to this postal location for shipping and mailing purposes during all 4 years of my undergrad career due to its proximity to Cal and nothing else. I always dreaded stepping foot in here. The customer service is very indifferent, and sometimes even hostile and condescending. The workers tend to answer your questions with mocking tones and impatience. I try to attribute this to the large influx of students who need USPS services and the understaffed workers having to deal with the nonstop business, but I still dislike what I have to face. On more than one occasion, they have lost my mail and refused to assist me, or directed me to dead end resources. This is a very small location nestled between a convenience store and IB's. Overall, it gets shipping and mailing done and is a quick and relatively painless task if you refrain from asking the workers questions and know exactly what you need. Yes, I understand some people have genuinely gnarly experiences at USPS's. You can't excuse bad attitude. But those who complain about slow service between 4-5pm on a Friday? What the heck do you expect? It's one of the most congested times to get anything done. It's unfortunately the only time some people have during the work week to run errands like, oh, mailing packages...and stuff!? You wouldn't write a bad review for the Bay Bridge because it was slow and CONGESTED when you chose to crawl across it at 4:30pm on a Friday, would you? Thought not. Deal with it! I had a pleasant and uneventful experience at this branch. Came on a Thursday around lunchtime, 12:30pm. One woman running the counter. She was very courteous and I saw her be patient and helpful with several customers prior to me. Including a clueless girl clutching a pile of papers wondering how to pick an envelope. Including the couple who was there just to find out how much it would cost them to mail a shit ton of stuff to Germany. Pleasant, patient, efficient, helpful. With other customers, and with me. Took me less than 10 minutes to get in and out. That's good service if you ask me. TIPS: Grab a number. Try not to yank off two or three from the roll. Wait patiently. Try not to come at peak hours (read: Friday 4-5pm). If you do, don't complain about the dang line! read more

Rude staff. Came on a Monday morning to drop off a pre-paid package, got there a little before they open at 9 so I could get out of there quick to get to class. They opened the outer doors at 9, but didn't open the inner doors to start servicing anyone until around 9:10. Time is money when you're a student. At the front of the line I asked to verify if I could just drop my package at the front, since it was already paid for, and bounce out of there, but the service man interrupted me half way and in an irritated tone said I needed to get a number so he could look at it. After I'm done, I breathe a sigh of relief to leave. I stopped going here once I found somewhat better service at the Downtown Berkeley post office. This is by far one of the saddest US Post Offices I've been to (after the Fairmount Station one in El Cerrito). Utilized it for the first time yesterday to mail one letter because I misplaced my book of stamps, and had to mail the letter out by a deadline. It is the closest one to my work, and within walking distance. First of all, if I did not know it was there, I wouldn't have been able to find it. It's hidden in between Johnston's Market and Durant Cafe-- both of which stick out much further than the Post Office. It's basically tucked into an alley. Even though I knew where it was, I still ended up walking passed it! I went around 11:00-ish in the morning and was there nearly 45 minutes waiting in line. Not exaggerating! There was not self-service machines. Not even a stamp dispenser Just post office boxes and the ONE postal worker. The line was nearly out the door. ONE postal worker. At a post office one block from UC Berkeley's main campus. Serving thousands of students. What are they thinking? Severely understaffed as others had mentioned. But also to the poor postal worker's credit, he was dealing with many noobs trying to mail packages out of country. I heard the poor postal worker explaining to a customer that they would need to fill out a customs form for mailing packages out of country. So why is it that 3 other people after this guy missed it and all had to be told the same thing? You'd think standing in this long, slow moving line one would have plenty of time to complete the form so that when it was your turn, it'd speed up the process instead of holding the line up even more! Not sure how the postal workers at this location make it through each work day. I was losing patience the 45 minutes I was there. Most likely NOT ever returning except in cases of urgency and I cannot get to any other post offices conveniently. Also, metered parking if you're driving. read more

It usually gets the job done, although wait times can get up to around a half hour sometimes. As other reviewers have alluded to, the customer service situation is depressing. There will be a maximum of two workers serving the line and they tend to take mini breaks on a whim. Once your "number" is called, the experience turns into a combination of security screening, sales pitch, and elementary school-style scolding. Usually goes something like: "Any hazardous liquids or perishables? Do you want any stamps today? Do you want to buy insurance? Do you want delivery confirmation on that? You shouldn't have put tape there!" In all fairness, one of the employees is more friendly than the other. To put it simply though, they just seem pissed off at having to help you. I f**king hate this post office. Sending mail has never been so difficult. The reason I'm not giving a 1-star review is because I respect most businesses for their effort and hence deserve at least 2 stars. This is the most convenient post office for students living around the UC Campus area, but it's also the worst. First of all, it's located in a sketch-ass alley that seems like you're about to walk into a crack house. I'm pretty sure this alley is where shit goes down after-hours. The inside is lot smaller than other post offices and has fewer packaging materials. I've been to this post office a number of times when I needed to mail stuff out, and I agree that they get the job done at the bare minimum. However, they lost my packages on two occasions, and I ended up almost losing $100 because of it. I later learned that it could've been my fault for not packaging my mail correctly, but they made no effort to correct me on it and if they did, they told me that they'd take care of it, which they clearly didn't because the recipient never received the package. Now I'm a bit more cautious when sending out packages here and make sure I get tracking and hold onto the receipt. Make sure you package your mail ahead of time and do it right or they'll get all Squidward on you. That's not even the biggest part. The two employees (y'all know who I'm talking about) up front clearly have no interest in you or your mail. I've done transactions with one or the other every time I'm here, and I'm mixed with the both of them. If you know what you're doing, it'll be a quick and painless transaction and they'll get it done, but if you have questions that require more effort on their part, they won't be too pleased. I once asked the man about which mailing method to use to save a money for mailing a textbook, and he just came at me all rude. The woman is more or less nice, but it's obvious that she's been in the business for too long that everything she says is scripted, hence the apathy. All these other reviews are talking about giving the employees here a break. I totally understand where they're coming from, but why they trynna sympathize for? I work in customer service, and even though helping customers isn't necessarily my calling, it doesn't give me the right to act like a shit show. This ain't Bon Qui Qui! As other reviews have already covered, the service here ranges from indifferent to hostile - but at the end of the day, it's the post office, and I'm really just here to get my mail from point A to point B. This location has shorter lines in the afternoons - whereas the Allston main branch is just busy every hour they're open. Their queuing system is confusing - they give out numbers, but people also line up, and they seemingly arbitrarily call numbers, and then people from the queue. There a little things they do to make the line go faster, like having Express mail forms ready for you to fill out, and if you haven't filled out your package right, they'll ask you to step to the side while they help someone else. I definitely appreciate these little boosts of efficiency, since no one really likes hanging out at the post office. Utility mailers and bubble mailers are often sold out in the size you need, and they're pretty expensive to begin with anyway. If you're mailing packages semi-regularly, buy a pack of mailers on Amazon for a fraction of the price the post office charges (and save old boxes from those online purchases!) They don't provide tape or anything (unless you want to purchase a roll), so save yourself the trouble and bring your own packing tape! read more

I don't understand why people love to rate all post offices so low. Post offices are government run places in which to help serve us. I think our society has become one of instant gratification thus only worried about themselves and not thinking of others. This is what I love about Yelp, as a society, the attempt to let other humans know our personal feelings so that one can make an informed decision and not come to just expect instant satisfaction. Now to review this post office. In any case, I find this to be the typical post office with the typical wait. Because its based on a numerical system, its fairly simple your number call, your up. Now, if people want to speed things up, it would really help if you would have all that you need prepared before going up! That is what makes the system slow down!!!!!!! The employees there are good people, you just got to treat them as people, not as indentured servants like so many people i see treat them. Of course they are going to get cross with you if you act clueless and then expect them to tell teach you the ABC's. Just be cordial and they will act the same to you. I honestly don't know why so many people are complaining so much about this post office! I dropped by twice this week to a) drop off a package and then b) buy stamps. Yes, so the employees don't exactly drop everything to help you or smile 24/7, but seriously, this is a post office- do you really expect that? The first time, I was helped in about 10 minutes after grabbing a number. The guy took my packaged cardboard box and bam- I was immediately on my way. Total time spent here? 15 minutes. The second time, I got a slightly grumpy black woman. I was helped about 5 minutes after walking in and asked to buy some stamps. Unfortunately, I got a bit of sass as she grumpily informed me that they were low on stamps and could I "just buy what I needed thanks". Whatever, I got my stamps (although they were oddly Pixar-themed) and went on my way. Bottom line: USPS workers are probably not living out their dream careers, so cut them some slack in the service department. Service absolutely sucks here. Lines are usually long and very slow, especially on Fridays and after 4 or 5, and the customer service is terrible. The two female clerks are usually bored here and won't make eye contact with you, but the male employee is downright mean. I went in unknowingly using a priority mail label instead of a plain one and when I told the clerk I wanted to ship cheap as possible, the guy freaked out at me. "Read it," he said. "Uh... Kimberly Adams, 1200 Maple-" "No, READ IT." "I am reading it." "No, look, it says PRIORITY. Do you want to send it PRIORITY?" There had been a faint watermark that no normal human with regular vision would probably see on the paper. "Bring them back when you're ready." "...FINE." He just stares at me. What a nut! The people that work here have always provided me with great customer service. The customers who send packages and don't know the rules and regulations usually get mad that they have to get out of line and fill out extra forms, or maybe they used the wrong box to send something, well, GET A CLUE people! GET OUT OF THE LINE and FILL OUT YOUR FORM or USE THE APPROPRIATE BOX! The post office clerks aren't going to hold your hand, they have a job to do! For the people that come in prepared, you'll have a pleasant experience. I feel bad that they have to deal with idiotic college students all the time. This post office is very understaffed, but that's not saying much as most of them are. I came in here to deliver a package around 1pm on a Tuesday afternoon and the line was out the door with only one clerk working. There was easily 10 people ahead of me and this poor lady had to take care of everything herself. About 40 minutes later, I finally reached the front of the line. Not only was the lady patient, but she was very nice. I'd have to give her a medal for this because if I were in her shoes, I'd definitely be annoyed at this point. I was shipping something internationally but did not have a customs form filled out. She patiently explained to me what I needed to fill out and asked me to walk back to the front after completing the form. I did so in 5 minutes and came back. She then asked me how quickly I'd like the package to arrive and went through my options. I'll be honest, if it was not for her working there I'd probably give this place 1.5 stars. If you HAVE to come to this post office, I'd advise you to try to stop by before or after lunch time, as this post office is used mostly by Cal students and lunch time always seems to be the most busy. No, they can't supply you with the right tape, you have to buy it - I get that too. But, do you have to be rude about it? Also - the place wasn't busy, no other customers, and I had prepurchased a mailing slip, so I was all ready to go, but the tape was wrong. Once, on a Tuesday at 1pm, I walked straight up to the counter and they took care of me. I was mailing an engagement ring back to my forgetful mother, so I was more-than-a-little concerned about my envelope, and the woman was very helpful. I was in and out in 5 minutes with what I considered to be a complicated transaction. The second time, I came in on a Monday morning around 10:30, and there was a line of 6 or 7 of us (all Cal students probably on our way to 11am class). Honestly, the thing that makes post offices a pain is the CUSTOMERS who don't know that you can get all of the sheets you need for delivery confirmation, etc. on the side and fill them out BEFORE you get to the counter. It would have taken half the time if they could have figured that out! This is a perfectly fine post office. Use it. read more
