I see that there are basically two kinds of reviews of this post office: either it's the worst place you've ever been, or everyone should lower their expectations about the experience they'll be having at the damn post office. Count me among the second group. You can help yourself have a better time at the post office, everyone. First, plan on it taking a little while, and try not to go at the worst times of the day, week, or even school year (like early September, as someone below found out). Second, GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER. I was in this post office a couple days ago and some girl was explaining to the guy behind the counter that if they would just take her package directly from Berkeley to Claremont and not to the distribution center in Oakland, it'd be more fuel efficient. Give. Me. A break. While imperfect for sure, I don't think the post office needs lessons in logistics from Berkeley undergrads. Not great. Always seems to be understaffed, wth under enthused workers. Today I came in to see a single man working behind the counter and a long line, along with a few random people standing off to the side. Normally, you pull a number and proceed to the counter when your number is called, but apparently this guy wasn't having it - "I ain't callin' no numbers," was his reply to being asked how the line was being managed. Thus it was the responsibility of all of us in line to discern who ought to be served when. Extremely unprofessional, and I have no idea why there ought to be only one person working at a freaking post office. Very unimpressed. read more

A. Walker was rude initially, his tone was very disrespectful. I told him the Amazon center redirected me to this office and he told me, sharply, that they provided wrong information and that he deals with "my people" all the time. He then rudely stated if I didn't have a po box then nothing would be there for me, and then I told him I'm just doing what was suggested. He gave me the number of another berkeley branch to call, so I did so, but before I was done he told me to leave because he had to help other customers. Really disappointing customer service from "regular" counter postman. I come to this post office on a frequent basis, often with prepaid postage and with a cheery demeanor. However, almost every time, Mr. Walker is rude and dismissive, making me feel bitter about the experience. Presumably he often needs to cope with students who are unfamiliar with the USPS and it seems as though the repeated explanations have tainted his attitude. But this isn't a valid excuse for the poor customer service. However, Deborah, another sales associate, who I rarely interact with, has always been a pleasure. There are other post offices in the area that benefit from helpful, positive CSRs, so I would recommend avoiding this one. read more

While every knows (or should know) that the USPS is one of the worst corporations in terms of customer service (they routinely lose or mangle packages and letters and then blame it on machine malfunction, make sure you get their insurance!) this lovely little office makes the rest look like they employ former butlers who dote on your every whim. This place is horrible. And the employees move as slow as they can to clearly show you that they could care less about the fact that you would like to do other things with your time (like writing a yelp review) then standing in a line at the post office for an hour (which I did, maybe it was more, I didn't really keep track). 1:30pm 11/21 This post office SUCKS. Every time I go in there they are out of numbers, and there is only one person working the desk. Today however, I had the honor of having a woman open up her area for me. She called me over, obviously having a crappy day, no eye contact whatsoever, and just looked at my pick up slip and mumbled something at me. After having to ask her to repeat herself she said that I needed to go to another office to pick up. I just waited in line to hear her rudely tell me this, 5 words, no eye contact, didn't even give me a complete sentence, and treated me like a complete waste of her time. The only good thing about this place is that it is easily accessible to campus and where most students live. I have friends who avoid this place because of certain workers who stare at her intensely and strangely. It takes forever for them to do something and/or understand what you want but it does get the job done ultimately.... In my 4 years here I've received some major stinkers and some decent service here. And I've heard of my friends having the same experience. Employees who rush you, don't explain anything they're doing when you want "something sent to ___ and make for me to make sure they got the package/letter", upsell you off some muttered reason and don't even look you in the eye while doing it. Oh and on a good day this is after a nasty wait too. I suppose being near a college makes it OK to take advantage of people my age. And then there are a few nice ones here, even some humor. Just yesterday I got a good one and today a major stinker. I wouldn't accept such inconsistent service nor poorly explained pricing or product descriptions out of an eatery so why should I out of a mailing service? Because they're the only game in town. Go elsewhere, seriously. I've had good experiences with Fedex in 2 different states, 4 different facilities, 5 different USPS offices. Use the one on Allston or the on further north on Shattuck. I just had a parcel put in my mailbox. Not my name (not even close). Not my street. Not my number. Obviously a prescription. Couldn't find person's number online without joining a site but did find out they're either 81 or 91 years old. Why isn't there an English competency test for postal carriers and a test of ability to read numbers? (I called the Berkeley post office without reaching even a machine, called the number on the USPS site and heard that there was a wait of 13-20 minutes. What a pile of crap. I strongly suspect that this post office is a portal into another universe, and I thoroughly enjoyed my all too brief visit. I would have stayed longer, but after about 15 minutes, someone else came in and disrupted my solitude. No, I never was able to buy stamps or mail my package, but I didn't really care since I knew I could do that else where. But I knew I was in a special place when I saw the sign that told me the window was open Mon - Fri (9 to 5) and closed Sundays & Holiday. Hmm. I was there on a Saturday, so the window was neither open nor closed. One does not encounter that level of emphatic ambiguity all that often. Not even in Berkeley. I also liked another sign that told me mail would be distributed in boxes no later than 1 a.m. Not even 1:00 a.m. Just 1. (a.m.) I do not know when the mail arrives there, but it must be a happening place right around midnight when the staff is scurrying to get the mail into all the 18 or 20 boxes. Even more fun: A defective stamp machine which has been labeled as slated for removal on Dec 5, 2008. Whoa! Time warp! See what I mean? The hits just kept coming. And an empty and seemingly ancient box that may once have actually held voter registration forms. Not enough visual stimulation for you yet? Check out the "ring bell" sign for your packages: It can only be a group art project, and if you don't like it in its current version, it's up to you to go add more festive tape and additional stick on letters and numbers. I'm really curious, too, about the spot on the wall where a sign is missing but you can see the history of the little P.O.'s many paint jobs. How cool is that? I encourage you to stop by, recite a poem, read a little Eudora Welty, do a little dance, throw some money into the gaping hole in the stamp machine, and make a wish. I recommend visiting on a Saturday between the hours of 8 and 3. Take your camera and some voter registration forms. And if the portal to another universe does open for you, send me a post card when you get there. read more

It seems convenient because it's near Sather Gate, but it has horrible hours, and I've come here a couple of times before the posted closing time only to find the doors locked. If you don't know what you're doing, you're gonna get called out on it by the workers here. They're not gonna sugar-coat anything for you or care about your feelings. If you buy a pre-paid label for a box that weighs one pound and end up going over one pound and the guy yells at you.. that's your own fault! I've watched this happen more than once. This place is your typical post office, and out of the many times I've been here, there's nothing particularly bad or good about it. It's just a post office. I did knock of a star because the male employee that is usually there can be rude. He gave me a hard time while I was picking up a package and sat there lecturing me about the proper way to send it, as if I had anything to do with sending the package. With the exception of that guy, the other employees have always been polite enough. I agree with another commenter that said there's only ever really a problem when customers come in without a clue and expect to have everything explained to them with every detail, which I understand is necessary sometimes, but you can at least fill stuff out before going to the counter... read more

I send packages from here at least twice a month. I usually try to get there in the mornings when they open, so there is no line. If I get there later and there is a line, the USPS employees are cheery and helpful, which makes up for it. Advice? Grab a number and bring a book if you can't stand long lines. read more

Ok, I use the post office pretty regularly back home in San Jose. This post office SUCKS!! The mailboxes outside are always jamming and the customer service is absolutely terrible. The line is ALWAYS long and also, the tech there is super outdated. The postage machines don't work. I advise you to weigh your packages at home and purchase postage online and save yourself a lot of time! After reading all the bad reviews about this place, I walked in for the first time yesterday to set up a PO Box, because it was either this or the downtown post office which has even worse reviews. The wait time was actually not that bad, but this place has very rude and unprofessional employees. The employees get the job done, but they talk to you in a very robotic, annoyed tone of voice. They don't even bother to smile and they make it very noticeable that they don't give a shit about you. Yes, the people behind the desk could be more warm and fuzzy. But...considering the customers they have to deal with, I'm surprised they haven't gone bonkers. "I have five unsealed boxes of biohazardous material and rum that I have to ship to Turkmenistan. Can I send two of them by Priority and three by Global Express? How much is insurance? Can I have delivery confirmation on two of them?" You get the idea. Echo the rude staff... After waiting in line for 30 minutes, the gentleman at the counter says, "I can't help you. You have to do it online." The reason I was there is that I shipped a package that has been stuck in Bell Gardens, CA for 5 weeks. I can't file a claim online, because I shipped it economy mail. He then tells me they have no supervisor, so no one can help me at this location. Really? They could at least have the claim form available. I learned that you have to call a telephone number for that and they mail it out in 3-5 more days. This is the second package I mailed in Berkeley that was lost. There is a right way and a wrong way to deal with people and this just is not it. From here, I go to the Post Office downtown, which is worse. There is a sign up that says, "Customer Service and Manager in Room 108 and 109." There is no Room 108. Room 109 is locked. The woman at the counter tells me they no longer have time to look this stuff up. Soooo, two hours later, I have gotten no where and I am back to the telephone, which I have called five times and no one answers and you cannot leave a message. Can we give no stars? read more

If i could give 0 star, i would serious do. Not to mention the long wait and the lazy clerks who work inefficiently and ultra slow. The customer service was extremely horrible especially the male clerk. The male clerk was rude and absolutely no customers service at all. The first time i went, i thought he was just having a crappy day but the second, third, fourth, fifth times and etc...i had experienced the same horrible customer service from the male clerk(yeah, very unfortunately, he seemed to be permanently working there and happened to serve me every single time) and never a single time was good or even just average. By looking at the other ppl's reviews, the bad customer service is indeed common enough in this post office and becomes a serious problem. Hope one day USPS can train this particular employee how to do customer service. read more
