First, I want to start by saying I was a huge fan of Upstream and they were always delicious and had friendly, helpful staff. However, this is my second visit in a couple years that has made me decide that I won't be revisiting the restaurant. This visit, today, Jan 15, 2012, was subpar, to say the least, and it was to their downtown location. The one out West would get the same review from me, fyi.
While the atmosphere is great, I base my judgements of restaurants off food and service. Let's start with service - first, they placed us by a buffet after I stated I wanted to look before I decided where to eat. I looked at the buffet and it looked awful. I couldn't believe how poorly they'd presented their food and not to mention, the type of food wasn't even what I've come to love and expect from them. They should stay away from the Sunday Brunch business. Also, for the price of $17, that's the exact same price as a few miles away at all the casinos noting Harrah's has the best Sunday brunch buffet which a much better selection of food, desserts, and even a mimosa bar.
So we left the area by the buffet and went to the front to kindly ask to be seated somewhere else. The man was confused but obliged and took us upstairs where I was hoping it'd be more calm/relax. Funny I say that because that's exactly what I got...it was so calm/relax that the waitresses never bothered to visit our table for 10 minutes (no exaggeration). There was a table right next to us that also didn't have any wait staff come visit them in their time. There were a few other tables by the bar that I'm not sure if anyone visited and then there was a table off to our left that did have a waitress attend to it about 3 times while we sat there. I was confused that no one came up right away to ask us for our drinks - isn't that was your number one job at a restaurant is - to ask for beverages?? I swear to you we were so close to leaving but, I think the bartender heard me because I saw him go over to a waitress who was standing around twiddling her thumbs and told her to come see us. Keep in mind that for the first 5 minutes of us sitting there the 2 waitresses and bartender were all standing around chit chatting - literally 20-30 ft in front of us so they could see us and we could see them. I wasn't too annoyed except when I learned that one of the waitresses was suppose to wait on us.
The waitress who was assigned to our table never did come. We ended up having the other waitress who was pleasant enough and did apologize for not coming sooner. Ok. Fine. Let's order and eat. Beer - raspberry one - not so good. I will say it wasn't as bad as the last couple of times I've had it but, never as good as the first year Upstream was open - in their first year they were awesome. And, as I said in the beginning, it's a continual downhill move...
I ordered mac n cheese which they've been known for making an awesome dish. The kid ordered cheese pizza. The dad ordered pot roast. Everything but my mac n cheese was cold, and nothing tasted good. Pizza didn't have pizza sauce on it and just tasted like bread with cheese - again it was cold and cold pizza is not something I enjoy. The pot roast was cold and dried out tasting. The mac n cheese just didn't have that zing that it once had. It didn't seem like they baked it at all - just threw some cheese and cream in a pan with noodles and added some green onions and ham. I could have made that! The only thing good was the mashed potatoes and even those were starting to get cold and bad by mid-way through the meal.
The only good thing we ate was the orange cocoa chocolate cake for dessert. The only reason we had dessert (instead of running out of there screaming) was because it was my birthday. Oh, yes, did I mention that? I had chosen Upstream because they used to be so delicious and I wanted the gnochhi which is one of the few places in town that makes it and makes it well...however, they would not serve that at the lunch time (apparently it's a dinner time?). I did try to keep a positive attitude and kept giving them the benefit of the doubt since it was MY birthday, the one day a year I get to spoil myself...Anyway, the cake was delicious so if you're looking to find a place to shoot pool, eat a good dessert, then that's about all they have going for them. Hence the two stars...
Don't drink their beer - it's not good anymore and don't eat their food - it sucks and is cold.
Also, if you know the waitress with dark brown, curly hair that works at downtown Upstream, tell her to pull the stick out of her butt and do her job. Maybe try to smile once in awhile and most importantly, wait on the table you're assigned! read more
