Nice little bakery here in Davis. They have a good selection of breads to choose from. You can buy "day old" breads at a discounted price. They also sell honey, jam, various nut spreads and coffee beans here. At the front, you can order freshly made sweet pastry goods, croissants and freshly brewed coffee. Minus 1 star because their breads are on the dryer side and is a bit pricey. But they are healthier breads indeed. I got the Sunberry toast/bread and a bag of croutons made from mixed bread varieties + herbs/olive oil. The croutons were so good - everyone at work asked to try some and loved the herby fragrance from it. Will be back for more croutons and to try other types of breads. read more

I adore their Raisin Pumpernickel Bread. I've had it numerous times delivered as part of a Farm Fresh to You order. I ended up near Davis and stopped in excited to sample some of their sweet offerings. Lemon Meringue tartlet: the meringue wasn't cooked enough and ran all over the place, and there wasn't a good contrast (that I prefer) of tart to mildly sweet, the meringue was overly sweet. The person at the counter, perhaps she was new, but she didn't seem to know anything about any of the items in the cases. Hopefully just new and learning the ropes. Ordered a couple other things and sadly they weren't memorable. Disappointed, but that R-P bread is still the bomb so can easily give a 4 star. If only one of their desserts was better I'd gladly give a 5. If I'm up in Davis again, I will give it another try. Yeah, I'm not a local. read more

Upper crust is always my go to bakery when I want a high quality loaf of bread. Normally I go to the farmer's market to purchase some but today I stopped by the store location for a Yelp event. I've had the sarmentine baguette before and it's interestingly shaped because the ends are split and it looks like a claw. Taste wise, it has a significant sesame flavor and I think it's great by itself or with cheese. It's a pretty hard bread which takes some effort to bite into. My personal favorite bread is their salted rose(mary). The cookies here as well as their other pastries are high quality that you can taste (although they are a bit pricey). Highly recommend trying some of their goods if you're into premium baked things! read more

Amazing bakery. Their pizzas are incredible, their bread is fantastic and the owner/master baker/entire staff are all exceptionally friendly. What really puts this place over the top is I've had hundreds of croissants in my life. East coast, west coast, French boulangeries, patisseries, shops all across Europe and France, etc. This place has the best croissant I've ever had. It's my favorite thing they make. Came home yesterday from Sacramento's Farm-to-Fork Festival with a loaf of Salted Rose bread and a Chocolate Babka. Some prices of the breads were posted. The salted rose bread was $6.50. No price was posted for the chocolate babka. I was shocked when I was charged $8.00 for the chocolate babka, which is a 2" x 6" loaf. Very small and the size of a large pastry. I like to support local small businesses. Paid for my bread, but if I knew this little loaf was $8, I would not have picked it up. Either this was a mistake or it was super over-priced. We were excited about our salted rose bread, but found that it was like day-old bread. It was hard and the inside bread was super stiff & tough in texture. Guessing that we had gone to the festival on the 2nd (Saturday) of 3-day festival, bread was probably baked before Friday, the start of the festival. read more

It's Amazing that they are open during the COVID19 protocols. I'm from Brooklyn, and the owners are as well. They have staff that are extremely friendly and appreciative that we choose them for our baking needs. Tonight was Pizza night, as usual high demand. The lovely ladies upfront gave cookies and other pastries...for the wait. One lovely lady gave me an apple tart, because my order was 30mins late(I just hung out at the food-coop). I have always appreciated bakeries, and jumped at the chance to come check out the place when a Yelp elite event took lace here. After attending the Yelp elite event here, I have tried several other dishes and am very impressed with the place. You can find them at the farmers market pretty regularly, and their Wednesday pizzas must be ordered ahead (and they run out too). The service was great - and they were very kind and attentive. There are some outdoor seating, but most people take it to go. The ambiance inside smells great, and you can peek into the kitchen to see behind the scene. The desserts range from French Éclairs to American Donuts, and the bread also range from Baguettes to Kümmelweck. Some bread options even include ube! All in all, this is a great place to check out for fresh bread, pizzas, and desserts. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to this bakery. The employees were outgoing and fun to chat with. The bread was excellent! I tried the baguettes, a jalapeño & cheese challah, and a wonderful croissant. The baguettes had a rustic look, split ends, and darker color. They're definitely a step above those baguettes you find in the grocery store. They had a hearty crust and a unique nutty flavor. The challah was light and had a beautiful color in the middle. It had just enough jalapeño to give it a kick but not overpower the flavors of the cheese and bread. The croissant gets a paragraph all its own. It was really something special. It was crisp on the outside and had layer upon layer of buttery goodness inside. I pulled off one end and some of those buttery layers came along for the ride. That's when I noticed how many times they had folded dough during the preparation. I wish I had bough a dozen. One of my favorite spots to pick up a donut or a bagel and coffee. The staff here are always friendly and the customer service is awesome. I've had their bagels and various donuts, and they're all really delicious! The donuts are best early in the morning when they first open, that's when the donuts are warm and fresh out of the oven! They also offer pizza on Wednesday evenings and let me tell you, the pizza is one of the best I've ever had. The crust is the most amazing part! I've been a fan of upper crust bakery for years and have purchased a number of their baked goods at the farmers markets in Sacramento. They have good challah and a monkey bread that's pretty spectacular. However, I had major sticker shock this morning when I purchased a loaf today and it was $11 dollars!!?!!! Shame on me for not asking ahead I suppose. Unfortunately, they never post prices upfront (and it can change occasionally I found for the same item). It was a rye loaf, and frankly, I am disappointed in the flavor, no caraway seeds to be seen, and wish I had done a sourdough or other bread instead. I am all about local small business but I know other small bakeries that charge less-- in the $7-10 range --and those are for artisanal specialty breads. I still enjoy UCB baked goods so will continue to patronize them but I was disappointed in my experience today. And may stick to what I know and ask in advance for the price. read more

Visited last weekend for the 1st time and really love this place! The lemon, almond raspberry tart was absolutely perfect! The almond croissant was a little overcooked and the chocolate oatmeal cookies were stale, but I still love this bakery because: - the tart was so amazing; it's a super cute place; plenty of parking (it's next to the Davis Food Coop); great customer service; and there were a couple small tables and chairs out front where we could sit and enjoy our tart. read more

I was going out of town and wanted to bring a raisin pumpernickel bread with me. (It was by special request), I called and was told "No problem we will put one aside for you and you can pick it up before you leave town." We took a special trip down to the bakery before our flight only to be told "Sorry that bread is only baked on Wednesdays. Came across this AMAZING cookie/bread maker at the City of Hayward's Farmers Market on 2/1 - was greeted by a very nice staff and was offered to try their triple chocolate oatmeal cookie. Was very happy I did and ended up buying last batch and also added the cali raison oatmeal and cranberry sliced sourdough. All were amazing especially the bread. So yesterday I went over to Upper Crust Bakery to try out a few baked goods. The shop is neat and clean, the wait in line was short, and the staff was pleasant and efficient. Now I will rate the baked goods I purchased: Vegetable Scone (9/10) - A really nice texture with a taste of fresh veggies. I would have liked a little tanginess to the dough, as this is a hallmark of a scone. A good scone for sure. Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookie (6/10) - This was a good cookie, for an oatmeal cookie, but there was no peanut butter flavor. A few bits of peanuts, but it was overwhelmed by the brown sugar and oatmeal. A peanut butter cookie should taste like peanuts above all else. This recipe needs adjustment. French Bread Croutons (6/10) - I really like a good crouton, and these have a nice crunch, but they were cooked too long and have a burnt finish in the mouth after eating one. The spicing was hard to gauge with the burnt flavor, but the rosemary is overpowering all the other spices unless that is the only spice, I'm not sure. Overall, it doesn't work on my salad. This recipe and time in the oven need adjustment. On my next trip, I will try some of the bread and other baked goods and update my review. read more

What great service and ambience! A gem of a bakery with sweet and savory. Fruit tart was our favorite!

This is our go-to bakery in Davis. At first, we'd always get the croissants, which are flaky, buttery, and often warm if you get there early. We branched out to their scones, with their yummy flavor combos -- not too sweet or perfectly savory and just the right amount of crumble. My husband loves the cardamom roll. The sourdough is to die for and their fancy pastries and cakes are some of the best I've had -- great for special occasions. Basically, everything is our favorite and we're so happy to have such a great bakery in town. Customer service has always been lovely, as well. Thank you, Upper Crust! read more

Their store is open! I've been patiently waiting for their location to open where the RadioShack used to be over by the Davis Food Co-op so was very happy to see the location open today (apparently just day 2!). Though I've been a customer at the Farmers' Market for a long time, it's nice to have this option every day. The space is still being set up, but I really appreciate not only all of their tasty baked goods but also the selection of other local products on shelves opposite the case. I purchased biscotti, a sesame babka, and a loaf of sun berry bread and they are all delicious, as expected. Very much looking forward to frequenting this establishment and supporting a wonderful, local business that is doing its part to support others, as well. I sat in my car for a while writing this and SO MANY people have gone in and out. Makes me so happy! read more

We visited Upper Crust Baking Company today for the first time (for a Yelp Elite event) and loved it! We'll definitely be back. The bread was amazing, the owners were warm, knowledgeable, and inviting, and the cheesecake was to die for! There's a reason it's called OMG cheesecake. Seriously the best cheesecake I've ever had. We made baguettes (well, we shaped the dough anyway lol) and they were so good. Mine was rosemary, which I had to try hot out of the oven. Ah-mazing. We also had pizza with the fresh pizza dough - so perfectly crispy and yummy. We sampled several types of bread and I ended up buying a loaf of whole wheat sourdough for home. I'm grateful to have been able to participate in this event and happy to know of a wonderful local place for delicious fresh bread and pastries. We have purchased bread from upper crust in the past. We had the salted rose bread and it was pretty good. We decided to try the loaf of rye this time ($11) and a little cheesecake tart ($5) at the farm to fork festival. The bread itself has a nice texture--it is fluffy and airy but lacks flavor. I expected more from a rye, especially for what we paid. It definitely isn't worth $11. Now on to the biggest disappointment of the night, that cheesecake was gross and should never be sold anywhere. I didn't know anyone could mess up cheesecake but it had an unpleasant flavor and texture. It tastes like gelatinous cheese (but not even good cheese) in a bland pie crust. It was unenjoyable after one bite each. I WANT to support local businesses and don't mind paying a little more to do so. But I don't want to feel cheated and given a subpar item under the guise that I am purchasing something special with buzz words like: omg and handmade. At the very least rationalize the price by giving me something delicious. read more

2.2 stars, a steep fall from the one-time 5 star Gill and family.... are you guys sliding downhill? Long ago, in ye olde Sac-town, I used to actually babysit the best friend of this bakery owner's daughter. Subsequently, I would go on 'field trips' to Davis, bringing my little one to go boing a trampoline or whatnot. I learned about this family's business through a friend. Previously, they used to make these wonderful, fresh hybrid oatmeal-based cookies and oh.. the challah loaves and other seeded breads. Perhaps they piqued in the 90's or so? Selling exclusively to the farmers market community (the largest, ostensibly, being to Davis itself), such as Sacramento and Point Richmond by myself. Their stuff has lost its edge, though. Of late, I am not attracted to the look of their offerings, and it does make me sad. Who wants to purchase cookies that are so dry, they're broken off the edges, or the plastic bag in which they're wrapped is becoming opaque and all crinkled from who knows what? Please revive yourselves somehow and resuscitate the quality that I once knew, because I really want to 5 star you.... so bad. read more

I've been noticing Upper Crust Baking Company more and more at various farmer's markets in the Sacramento area. Although I'm not exactly a specialty bread kind of person, their cookies have been catching my eye. Finally, today at the Wednesday farmer's market at Cesar Chavez Park, I decided to try their cookies. They were surprisingly REALLY GOOD!!! Before buying the cookies, just on appearance alone, I wasn't expecting them to be that good. They looked average and I thought possibly I would be disappointed, but I wanted to try them anyway. First bite, I thought, wow! These are good! They were still warm too! I ordered the oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip with white flour, and chocolate chip with wheat flour. I was trying to see if I had a favorite out of the three, but they all tasted excellent! My friends also really liked them. The girl who worked at the Upper Crust stand at the Cesar Chavez farmer's market today provided great customer service. She was friendly, polite, and helpful. Also, she offered me a nice sample, which was pretty cool. The cost is $1.50 per cookie. You can get a 6-pack of cookies for $7.50. All of their cookies have oatmeal in them and they taste great! I did notice that the size of the cookies were not the same. The oatmeal raisin cookie I received was noticeably smaller than the chocolate chips. Upper Crust does not have a storefront, but you can find them at many farmer's markets in the Sacramento area. read more

Last weekend, my husband and I heard that there was a Farmer's Market in Rocklin so we decided to check it out. Rocklin is super close to us and was a short drive away. The Farmer's Market was located in an RC Willy's parking lot. When we got there, it was relatively small and contained one stand with lots of produce, fruits and vegetables; there was a flower market too. There was also a Mexican stand that sold vegan tamales (I got one of those that I later had for lunch that day) and my husband got a shredded chicken tamale. We also noticed there was a Upper Crust baking stand in which the original bakery is located in Davis, CA. I decided to buy some cookies to help support their business. Upper Crust also had baked breads like frosted cinnamon raisin bread and a pumpkin bread too along with all kinds of different cookies. I bought some oatmeal raisin cookies and my pack of 6 cookies cost me $8.50; a little pricey in my opinion. I had one cookie that night. The cookie was crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. It was good but it was a little on the sweet side since I noticed that the first ingredient was brown sugar. I usually prefer my bakery cookies to be all soft and moist. I think next time, I will buy a loaf of their bread because I heard their breads are the bomb. Overall, it is a decent bakery and I think I will come back for more. read more
