Just bought 6 Hot Cross buns....maybe the girls at the bakery counter gave me the most stale buns in the store but these were the driest buns I had ever tasted...like sand! And only one raisin in the entire bun. Could these buns be meant for dogs and I just missed the sign? Most appalling customer service experience I have had in a long time. My mother and I wanted to get some fresh bread and we'd heard great things about this place so we decided to stop by. We decided on some bread and went to check out their selection when we noticed some different looking loaves on the wrack behind the front register lady versus the bread loaves that were sliced on another shelf in the store.The names were the same but one was denser and the other was more spongy like store bought sandwich bread . So we asked what type of bread it was because of the same names but different consistency. The clerk looked at us as if we had asked a dumb question and She looked at us with such disdain like we were bothering her w/ our supposed ignorance on the topic of bread. She didn't even fully answer the question. She just said the name is the same and in theory they were the same but not. Then we asked for a recommendation/preference between babka loaves. She seemed even more displeased at having to answer even more questions. So just like with her previous answers she kept them short and clipped. She just replied "it's a matter of preference". She could have said if one was sweeter than the other and helped us reach a decision. I work in customer service and would never dream of acting this way. In fact if I acted this way towards a customer and my manager caught me I would be in so much trouble. You answer people's questions despite how stupid you may think they are and if they are having a hard time deciding between options and they ask you questions you help narrow down options as best as possible. At the end of the transaction my mom got a stamp card in case we liked the product enough to return and I signed up my phone number. I did that because some businesses offer promotions or keep you informed about new products. So I signed up and I wasn't aware that it was against their policy to have a phone number and get a stamp at the same time. The lady got super impatient and irritated when she realized what had happened and forced my mom to return the stamp card! Who does that?! She could have just let it go as an honest mistake. We left feeling very bitter about our overall experience. In this economy you can't afford going around and treating people like this. We have concluded that with customer service such as this we would rather give our continued business to Village Bakery. The bread was alright, we had some for lunch with some soup. It wasn't enough to make us want to go back to this establishment. read more

I can't sing the praises of Upper Crust Baking enough. Their cardamom rolls, kouign-amann, fruit tarts, and sarmentine baguettes are delectable, and the pizza nights are always a treat. Twice now I've done an advanced order to get something that has particular meaning for a friend or family member on a special occasion, and they've gone above and beyond to accommodate. The delivery service that they temporarily had during the pandemic shutdowns provided a rare bright spot that lifted our spirits during difficult times. They are a true Davis gem. read more

Bought a tiny loaf of chocolate Babka at the farmers market and it was $8.00 for a tiny tiny loaf. It's way smaller than an entire loaf of bread but cost more. No signage of prices for the Babka or items around it but I didn't think it would be THAT expensive! The loaf was hard and obviously not fresh. I don't just mean a day or two old. It taste like it's a week old. So are they selling leftover products at the farmers market ?! Disappointed. I went online and the regular sized loaf is $8.00 and the individual size is $4.25. I obviously paid $8.00 for an individual sized loaf. How annoying. read more

Review solely of service. Should work on their customer service skills. I first discovered them at the downtown farmers markets 2 years ago. I remember the cookies being delicious and they staff super friendly. They asked me if this was my first time and they gave me a history of them and their foods. It's been a while and happened to be downtown during the farmers market today. I can't remember which ones I liked before so I ordered one of each of the 4 types. The young lady taking my order mumbled something about buy x get one free. I thought she said 4 get the 5th free. So i say ok. Which is the best? Chocolate ok I'll take that as my free. I kid you not when this girl rolled her eyes at me so hard I thought her eyes would get stuck and caught major attitude! Now I'm thrown because we just were having a pleasant exchange. Rolls her eyes and says it's buy 5 get the 6th free. Mind you I didn't even want that many cookies and now there's a line. I'm confused and feeling rushed. I was this close to walking away. The other young lady I think sensed her cohort was being rude and tried to step in but she was awkward too. Cookie math figured out I paid for the cookies and gave them to a homeless person. I've never been so shocked by an encounter before. I cannot believe this person rolled their eyes and got an attitude with me for no reason at all. Usually there's some kind of lead up when it goes left. There was none here. I've worked in customer service for years and try my absolute best to be a problem free customer. I've never rolled my eyes at a customer in the face. Never mind I didn't even do anything! I'll never give these people my money again. Bought 2 loaves of bread from Upper crust at Arden Farmers Market. The rye Bread had mold within 36 hours of purchase. Neither loaf was on the day old rack, they were sold as fresh loaves. They appear to have gone downhill since the son took over. So sad! read more

Love the pizza, usually we have a good experience, but not sure why they make you preorder with specific pick up times if they can't keep on track with them. Also, I was told it would be a 10 minute wait from our 6pm pickup time - that's fine - but I was promptly forgotten about and we ended up waiting 40 for our (pre-ordered) pizzas. Also would have been nice if they updated us along the way or at least apologized for the fact that most of the 6:30 pickups had already come and gone. We love their pizza so it was a shame that they were so frazzled and behind tonight. read more

Ordered a small coffee to have in the bakery. The coffee itself was wonderful. But the presentation was really nice and unexpected as well. The mug, plate, and everything was so nice that as a person who doesn't normally pay much attention to this detail I took notice. Not to mention it came with a complimentary biscotti and chocolate covered espresso beans! My kids split a bread pudding and we're doing a happy dance by the time they were done. Tried lots of items via market, delivery, and pick-up. Definite highs and lows depending on item and day, IMHO. We LOVE their croissants, galettes, and cruffins (when eaten day of)!!! Tried their hamburger buns tonight and they were amazing! Sarmentine has great chewy + crusty textures and a unique flavor (from spelt flour and sesame). On the other hand, we've found the rosemary loaf and sliced breads to be a bit dry and bland. Bagels were so-so (one batch of everythings was burned and quite bitter). Tonight's cheesecake had an extremely dense, paste-like texture that had us drinking loads of water (not bad in taste, but tough to get through). Cookies were okay--quite a hard texture if that's your thing. Once a third-party item had mold upon delivery (they were kind and responsive offering a refund). Overall, not perfect, but I still love to frequent for certain items! read more

Lovely ambience, but not my favorite bread. The bread is too soft and too expensive, because it was $6.75 for a loaf about 2/3 the size of a standard loaf of bread you would purchase at a grocery store. I would need to buy about 3-4 of these loaves just for a week's supply of bread, which is unaffordable for a graduate student. I do appreciate the local ingredients and that everything is made freshly. I will likely come back here soon to see if they have any breads that I would like-I really prefer harder bread, and the seeds actually hurt my teeth while eating the birdseed bread. read more
