We were regulars at UHG for many years and then after several ownership changes we stopped going. I am so glad we decided to try again this last week with a group of friends which were trying for the first time. Ian has brought what we missed so much about this special neighborhood spot back. He stopped by our table to introduce himself and were impressed with his commitment to use as many local sources in creating his menu options. We loved to hear that the desserts and pasta were all made in house. Service was great, food was awesome. The menu has changed a bit, and in all in the right places. We had a Friday night reservation at 5:30 and were promptly seated upon arrival. There is a variety of seating including booths, table, half-booths, bar, and communal table near the bar. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Her visits were spaced out a bit longer due to it being an extremely busy night. And we never waited long for a drink refill. Our food came out quicker than I expected. We started with the giant pretzel, and next time I will order double cheese sauce. It also came with whole grain mustard and cinnamon sugar sauce (the latter was surprisingly good paring). For entrees my wife had the vegetable plate which differed from the menu description (no sweet potato or whipped feta), but she enjoyed it. And I shared all the vegetables that came with my entree, which was the braised short rib. It was fork tender and served atop rich and creamy risotto. The green beans on the side were cooked perfectly and lightly seasoned. I also added a side of the mushrooms and onions (with predominant item being mushrooms), and it was a generous portion. Lawd y'all! This was so delicious. Where do I even start? Oh, yes - why not with the appetizer? The cherry glazed Brussels sprouts with goat cheese (no hot sauce) was ridiculously good. I am...kind of embarrassed about how much I enjoyed eating that! I got the grilled chicken with the lemon sauce and it was it if this world! I did substitute the whipped potatoes for the roasted ones and I'm kind of sad at the version of me who did that. Everything was just so good and the service was excellent. We didn't have to wait long for anything and it truly was just a wonderful experience. I'll need back so fast. Dry and zero flavor. Chicken overcooked and dry set aside. So dry and thin wimpy piece. My crab cakes came out looking like fried dog food. While I managed a couple bites off top of crusted cooked part, I could not stomach the rest. The side of corn mix "something" was clearly poured from can and mildly heated. dry boring broccoli looked the same, just out of Green Giant bag, microwaved and set on plate- barely warm. Family Ambiance with Tables separated by wooden walls, nice bar made for 20+ people, one long high table can hold 20 people and standard tables in the middle of the restaurant can hold over 40 people and rearranged in many ways to give space or seats for many people on one table. Hard to explain as foreigner, but this restaurant has it all. And the food is very good and with some special kick. Just make sure you have enough $$$ available to eat with your family and friends. The price of any main dinner item is above average. $ 32-50 is the range. A dinner for two with 4 drinks and a small appetizer will reach for sure $100+tip, of course the amount of food on your plate can easily be eaten without asking to pack the rest when you leave. There will be no leftovers, you may have to order even a little more to fill your stomach when you're hungry. It's a restaurant for people with higher food quality expectations and enough money to pay for it. I can't afford that a second time, it was a one time only thing. We planned a night out and had heard that the menu was great, so we gave it a try. Reservations are accepted and while I didn't think they were needed, the it saved us a 15-20 min wait - so that worked for us. Service was slow for the first 30 mins, however, it wasn't from lack of trying, I think they are just short staffed. We ordered the Brussels for an app and those did not disappoint, however, the serving size was more ideal for a table of 4-6 not 2-3. Drink specials - $5 Martini's were keeping the crowd lively and the specialty cucumber martini was so crisp and smooth, it was a perfect accent to my meal. We had the prime rib special and the salmon and hands down these two entrees were some of the best we've ever had - you know I am pretty basic so I'm not a fancy meal savant this meal was fun, colorful and oh so good! Dessert was fun too - they have basic ice cream and syrup, crème brûlée, or a molten chocolate lava cake with fresh berries (that's what I had) - it was the perfect end to our amazing dinner. We will certainly be back. The decor is quaint on the outside and farmhousey on the inside. Our server (Alaina) was fantastic and kept us taken care of and laughing, Alaina provided solid recommendations that didn't disappoint. After seeing the reviews, i expected a pretty decent experience. We hit a night where a lot of young people had all gone to the restaurant. After waiting a long time just for the waitress to show up initially, I asked if they were swamped and we'd be happy to come back another time. The head waitress came out and stated she would make sure our orders got done. After a ridiculous wait and 3rd rate drink, the food finally came. With the exception of the appetizer, the rest of maybe 3 start quality at best, even though the price was 5+ star. I wouldn't waste my money on this place again. read more

Absolutely perfect dining experience this evening at Union Hill Grill. My wife and I met 2 dear friends of ours for dinner this evening at Union Hill Grill in Canton We started the evening with buckets of hot bread and honeyed butter to go along with our drinks. The bread was an absolutely perfect blend of warmth, airiness, chewiness and crunch. Really the best bread at a restaurant I have had in a long time We ordered the lollypopped chicken wings for appetizer with 2 different sauces Half were the spicy Asian sauce and half were the Buffalo hot - the chicken was perfectly cooked and both sauces were definitely upgraded homemade style sauces and were both incredibly delicious Next in line was their house salad with their homemade miso vinaigrette- the salad was very fresh and all the ingredients were in good proportion to each other and I'm not normally a big miso fan but the miso vinaigrette was simply amazing with a perfect fresh sweet/tang/tart/ combo For our dinner main course both my wife and I had the Grilled Chicken with creamy lemon caper sauce with Haricot Verts. She had it with the whipped potatoes that come with it while I substituted the Potatoes for the Truffle Mac N Cheese. Everything about this plate was perfect - the chicken had a nice sear and was juicy- the lemon caper cream sauce was velvety and packed with flavor. The haricot verts were cooked just right and the Truffle Mac N Cheese was really a showstopper - rich, robust, both simple and complex flavors perfectly integrated-- definitely the best Mac N Cheese I have ever had at a restaurant. I was able to snag the last 2 bites of my wife's whipped potatoes-- they were definitely not the normal basic whipped potatoes most places serve and were very delicious and rich tasting For dessert we shared the crème brûlée cheesecake topped with an array of fresh berries. The cheesecake was very substantive and silky and more delicious than the cheesecakes I have had at many places including The cheesecake factory All in all a perfect meal with our friends and a wonderful evening at Union Hill Grill ! read more

Until we saw them try to seat a party that came in after us (way after) before us and we complained. Service was not good. Took maybe 15 minutes for someone to stop by our table. Took at least -5 to get drinks which were real mediocre. Food all came out cold. After probably another 35-40 minutes. From apps to entrees. Cold. Cold cold. Food tasted ok. Just ok. It was our first time dining here and the food was excellent. Everything came out hot and had good flavor. The kids meal was ready before the adult entrees and the waitress brought it out immediately which was helpful for our little one. Waitress was attentive and helpful. The kids menu had some nice options in addition to traditional kid food so we ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes from the kids menu and it was a nice portion. Our first time there (although I had been years ago when they were open for lunch). Paper over linen tablecloths was odd and our friend's elbow kept catching the edge, so annoying. The table wobbled making our drinks sputter out a bit. My friend's martini was filled to the absolute top and spilling over as the server brought it to the table where it spilled some more. No offer to bring something to clean it up. I look over and see a pretty heavy layer of dust on the several levels of mill work on the wall. Made me question the care they give the kitchen. The menus were also dirty and stained. The room was very loud when most of the tables were filled. We could barely hear our friends across the table. Service was super slow (from a server who was quite old) which we were ok with, but it clearly wasn't done for our benefit. Three of four of us got salads. The Caesar salad tasted very strongly of anchovies. Not sure I've ever had a Caesar salad taste that strong. My husband gave the wedge salad pretty high marks. The bang bang shrimp was good. The fried shrimp wasn't anything special but came out piping hot. The veal meatloaf got high marks from my friend. No dessert menu, but our server sort of rattled off the list of options. We would probably go back, but only because it's close to us and friends like it. read more

Went to Union Hill Grill for a birthday dinner that was tied into a quasi-family reunion as some of us gathered in Dahlonega for a wedding that weekend. We had a good meal and nobody had any complaints on either the food, the cocktails or the service (in fact, I'd give the service 5 stars). Since we had apps at the house earlier we opted to go right to cocktails and entrée orders. I had a tequila based cocktail that had a good amount of booze and included things like an absinthe rinse, cracked black pepper. I definitely enjoyed. For dinner I went with the Pork Schnitzel which was served on top of a just right portion of mashed potatoes, had arugula on top and was drizzled with some balsamic glaze. Came out hot and crispy, the pork was tender and the flavors good overall once I added some salt tableside. There were desserts shared, key lime pie and a peach crisp type affair with vanilla ice cream. I didn't try either but everyone seemed to enjoy both given the empty plates at the end. All in all a good meal and I would be happy to go have another one if in the area again. read more

We were regulars. Seems like new ownership. Things have changed for the worse. They no longer give you the sourdough bread either dinner. They have replaced with possibly the worst garlic bread o have ever tasted. Don't waste your money. portions have shrunk and Quality is eroding. New Owners could have achieved bottom line desired by raising prices. We hear from other regulars that they too are dissatisfied. I wish the new owners the best as this is a tough business, but they do not seem to be in tune with their customers. Moving on to another establishment. Service is still outstanding as the staff is still there. This is the only positive I can point out other than hometown feel. read more

This place is going down hill FAST!!! It used to be a nice upscale-ish place, however now paper on top of linen tablecloths is as low class as you can go. My last meal there was Filet Mignon with whipped potatoes and Haricot Verts. The filet was so small and THIN, not to mention uneatable, the potatoes were like wall paper paste. I have never been served a pieces of Filet that is not 2" thick or more, this was a joke!! Needless to say I did not eat that night, sent it back and had it taken off the bill. We use to love this place but this is the second time it has not been good. Union Hill Grill you must pay attention to reviews as I have seen more bad than good lately especially on Cherokee Connect. Not sure what is going on but you will be out of business if you do not get back to the quality restaurant you use to be. read more

Arrived on time tonight to find they didn't have our reservation. Second time this has happened but fortunately they were not busy and we were seated right away. Would have given more stars because the food is EXCELLENT but found out when bill arrived that we were charged for the sour dough bread which was stale and no where near the quality of what they had before. We were also charged for the tea refill which was also a new experience. Chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday but we could have made other choices if we had known about additional charges on the bill. Others must have same feeling because the place only had a few patrons by 6pm when it used to be packed before on Friday nights. These extra charges make it difficult to afford to go out and we try not to take it out on the waitress who was perfect. We won't be making a return trip anytime soon which is a HUGE disappointment since the menu always offers some yummy items. read more

Great find. We came here tonight before going to see Christmas lights. We just moved to the area and the reviews and menu made this restaurant look promising. Despite a recent quite amusing and entertaining review panning the decor, I found it to be tastefully quaint. It's exactly what it purports itself as - fine dining with a farmhouse atmosphere. I thought it was great. The food is really good. I had a potato and bacon soup, chicken fried steak, and chocolate mousse for dessert. Everything was delicious. The green beans had just the crunch I like and the mashed potatoes were legit. The gravy was perfectly seasoned and the breading was just right. The chocolate mousse was super. Service was excellent. Host and waitstaff was polite, attentive, and helpful and the kitchen staff had great timing and coordination. This is a great spot I'm looking forward to eating at again! read more

2nd try and not much better than first try! Announcement to all restaurants: your hostess (person that seats your customers that are spending a lot to eat here) needs to care where she seats people and use common sense when someone expresses a concern! Made a reservation for a birthday dinner. Arrived early, not wait which was great (had just opened so plenty of seating), and was taken to a bar tabletop seat. We said no, husband has back problems. So we were placed in the bar! Now what would A couple want to sit in the bar if they are celebrating a birthday (not a party)? And why not ask if there is a place you prefer to sit when there are plenty of other options. So disappointing to sit next to loud people, 4 half booths and they sit the two with people Right beside each other. We could talk over the people next to us! Ordered and expressed concern over wanting a steak with not red but not burnt. Assured it would be correct. It wasn't. Took it back and waited a long time to receive a very overcooked steak. Waitress was would serve then disappear. So unless my husband wanted to wait a long time to eat so he could eat with me, he had to eat and me sit there. When the steak came, at first bite I knew they just slapped it in the grill or whatever and left it a while. Got the check and asked it all was good. I said no, very overcooked and her response was why didn't you tell Me! Well, that means you should be visible and return to a table to ask before the end of the meal. Frankly, it's too expensive to be poorly Prepared, dumped in a bar area and treated with so little service. And it was an evening out for a birthday and did not feel "nice". Won't return. We had an excellent dinner here! The restaurant has a relaxing atmosphere that is classy but has "farmhouse" vibes. The bread and butter was fantastic. The butter had a sweet taste making it hard to resist multiple pieces of warm bread! The fried calamari was one of the best I've ever had. Cooked perfectly to have a nice crunch from the breading but not too chewy calamari. The Local Burger was quite large and delicious. The fries were also cooked to perfection with a crisp outer covering. The veal meatloaf was delicious, but had a kick from the peppercorn sauce. Deliciously paired with the mashed potatoes. Not pictured: We had creme brûlée and Oreo cheesecake for dessert. The cheesecake was the huge hit for us. It wasn't crazy sugary, which we enjoyed, but was a perfect end to the meal.
