I placed a takeout order last week, with an estimated pickup time of 4:28 PM. When I arrived at that time, the bartender printed the order slip and went into the kitchen. Approximately five minutes later, she returned and told me it would be "just one more minute." After waiting nearly 20 additional minutes, I began to suspect that my order had not been placed until I arrived. The food appeared to be rushed in an attempt to make up for the delay and was poorly prepared and undercooked. As a result, I requested a refund and was assured that it had been processed. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and I am currently disputing the charge with my credit card company. After visiting this restaurant two years ago and being unimpressed, we decided to give them another chance. Not our best decision of the day. The decor is lacking, my wife's Jameson a ginger ale was weak and made with flat ginger ale. She said that her salmon blt was good, but the Caesar salad had no dressing on it, just shredded Parmesan. My shrimp and grits (one of my favorites) was drowned in sauce and quite salty. Our waitress, while nice, was moving 100 mph and it was difficult to get her attention. Would not recommend going on a busy time. There was a wait just to see how long the wait was. Sat many people before our big group that suggested we split up if it was an issue. An hour and half wait and then they told us when the big party leaves, we would we be seated. Bad part was they hadn't even got their food after sitting there for a half hour. Our server, Belle, was very friendly and attentive and as a tip, Sunday nights are bit slower here. So it's a classy spot where you don't have to fight for reservations for a nice meal. We began with the Parmesan shrimp appetizer with large plump shrimp (tail on) and toasted crostini. We weren't terribly hungry, so we both had salads: my wife had the pecan encrusted chicken while I had the classic Caesar. Mine was fresh testing with everything chopped nicely and I didn't have to wrestle with any giant pieces of lettuce. I was in one of those moods where everything was the same old thing. So I was looking for something new to try and came across the newly opened Hickory Flat Kitchen. A very modern and open theme with a nice layout. I thought for being so new to open there would be some glitches but not the case. All went well and smooth. Seating, ordering, service, entrees, dessert and checkout very good. Deciding on the Garlic Parmesan Shrimp for an appetizer was an awesome choice. 6 jumbo shrimp sautéed and served in a garlic parmesan sauce was delicious and filling. And the Grilled Chicken Breast came with 2, 5oz chargrilled chicken breasts with seasonal veggies, caramelized onions for 20 dollars. I thought a very good value for the amount of food you get. Finishing off a delicious and very enjoyable experience was the Baked Walnut Fudge Brownie with raspberry coulis topped with French vanilla ice cream. Very very good. Just not sure why a brownie and a scoop of ice cream took so long to come out. But it was definitely worth it. A very excellent experience for a restaurant thats only been open 3 weeks. Amazing, food was AMAZING!!! AMAAAZING. Salmon melted in my mouth, (i got it medium cooked), the steak was so tender and juicy, and the creme brûlée was soso creamy!! For the service, the waiter was so nice and explained a lot of things with good detail. The ambiance was very nice and dim, and the music playlist they had was really great actually! Mostly 2000's pop. I 100% recommend this, but if you did want to come here, just know when you pull up the windows might be a bit dark, but they are always like that and it doesn't mean it's closed (what we thought). read more

Food is so very, very good! This is my second time there I had to have the southern burger again because it is fantastic with the fried green tomato in it! My husband had the southern fried chicken with gravy and green beans he almost licked the plate . It was so good. The mashed potatoes are really delicious. Gouda grits are amazing. We have been to this restaurant numerous times. The food has been delicious every time. Tonight we had the southern burger and fries and got a side of the Gouda cheese grits. Every bit amazing. I don't think anyone has better Gouda grits. I didn't give 5 stars because I believe they could do a better job at attentiveness. There were only three tables occupied and when we entered no one greeted. After standing for several minutes we walked closer to the bar for someone to notice us. Generous four-stars but really hoping they live up to it soon. Nicely renovated with nice ambiance (nothing special or memorable though) and plenty of light. Disappointed that each booth didn't seem very private at all. The aisles were pretty tight, so tables across were pretty close. The bar area looked like a decent attempt but with the door to the kitchen right there, I can imagine it wouldn't be great on a busy evening. The music wasn't obtrusive and barely noticeable. The hostess seemed very unsure and struggled to figure out where to seat two of us also with the need for a high chair since the center booths are all raised. We just awkwardly stood there waiting as she started to clean a table for us then came back only to seat another couple behind us before finishing cleaning the table and finally seating us. She was not particularly friendly and I'm not sure she even smiled ever at us let alone greeted us when we arrived. The server was nice but I'm not sure she ever smiled either. Pretty attentive refilling waters. Never suggested add-ons or offered us appetizers or desserts. Food took quite a while for lunch service but we were ok with the wait. Our server apologized. The bistro steak salad was pretty good but way too much dressing hidden in there (I should have asked for dressing on the side) and my steak that was supposed to be medium but was quite red and raw in the middle and not seared on the outside which would have added more flavor. It was still decent and a big portion but also wish it came with croutons or a roll. My friend's chicken panini was good but looked skimpy and lackluster. She said it was dry and lacked sauce but still was pretty spicy. She said her fries were very good. It's the prices that were a shocker when first seeing the menu. The ambiance and food didn't warrant the prices. And certainly not the service. Another reviewer said there was a 4% surcharge for credit card processing but I was busy with my friend and a fussy baby by that point and didn't notice it on my bill. It certainly isn't on the menu. I really want it to succeed and will try it again, just I will bring cash and plenty of it. read more

The food is mostly fantastic, as long as you don't mind waiting a while. We took my father in law here for his birthday, with a total of 3 adults and 3 children. All of adults enjoyed the food and the ahi tuna was a really good value and was delicious. I ordered my burger medium rare and it ended up coming out medium well. My wife hates when I complain about meat temp at restaurants so I ate the dry patty. The wife had the filet mignon and it was cooked perfectly to her request of medium. The kids chicken tenders and fried shrimp received "Chefs kisses" (high praise In our family) but the kids pasta with white sauce tasted like Alfredo that they dumped a bunch of raw Jar-Lick. The service it self was scarce and appeared to be all inexperienced. Once we placed our order the server came back to ask my wife how she wanted her salmon cooked (she ordered the filet mignon), came back again to ask how I wanted my burger cooked (after I had already specified). The food came out with incorrect kids meals if the main was right the side was wrong. AT LEAST 3 tables got up and left due to no service or waiting over an hour for their food. I hear great things about this place, so I am hoping that it was just an off night. We will definitely go back, but it'll be 4-6 months when they hopefully get the wrinkles ironed out. read more

I think Hickory Flat kitchen had a great idea to put an upscale restaurant in this area. However, they really don't quite Measure app. They also get any notoriety simply because of the location that they are in and the success of the business they took over it, which was the Frosty Frog. It says they have tons of reviews but those tons of reviews are from the Frosty Frog not from Hickory Flat kitchen. I think they are very misleading. Our appetizers were cold, and the Seabass I ordered was nothing like what I expected only to find out that it is an Italian Seabass, but again not anything that I was expecting. I would say they have fair food, way over priced and then they tack on a fee to your final bill if you use a credit card. That's really tacky. As a business owner I don't pass on those fees to my clients. It's just part of doing business. If I'm willing to, except those credit cards which makes it easier for the clients to pay for services, then I should be willing to except the fees, according to the contract that I enter in by using them. it may even be illegal for them to pass on that fee to their guests. Either way. I'm not impressed. So sad,as we really do need an upscale,five-star, restaurant in this area. This certainly is not it! read more

What used to be the frosty frog sandwich shop and creamery (I believe) has been turned into an upscale dining experience to rival our other local favorite "farm to table" experiences. While maintaining the locally famous chicken salad salad and cheese spread from its predecessor, the team has elevated not only the food offered, but also the cocktails. The bar area offers a welcoming sports watching/socializing atmosphere while the dining room offers booth seating giving an atmosphere of intimacy for those wanting an evening away. Outside you have an open patio for those that enjoy fall and the great outdoors with speakers for ambience. Umbrellas cover the wrought iron patio tables for sun or elemental exposure. The bartender and owner were incredibly friendly and informative as to the menu for food and drink along with good conversation. A must try if you're a canton local. I waited a bit to try this place, because I heard from the start that they had some things to iron out. Upon finally trying it last night, I will say that the service was very good and the food was good as well. It's really noisy. And it's kind of weird being in there the first time since it changed hands from the Frosty Frog. I there's just something about the acoustics and a hollowness that makes the loudness a bit off-putting for me. What I definitely did not like are the prices. My dish was good but the food really does not justify the menu prices. The cheese spread, which is the same exact recipe from the frog, is $12 and comes with about eight pieces of crostini. We asked for some additional crostinis because it wasn't quite enough and they charged ANOTHER $1.50 just for a few slices of tiny bread. I think the move to nickel and dime with prices already at a premium is a really poor decision on their part. A friend asked about subbing the spinach in her dish with some brussel sprouts. Well, they don't offer those as a standalone side item and were not able or willing to accommodate the request so if she really wanted that substitution, she would've had to have ordered the actual entire appetizer for $14. That just doesn't seem very customer focused or accommodating to me. Again, particularly for the prices they expect to command. I'm glad they seem to have worked out their service and food quality issues but I really don't see myself returning here given the poor price to value ratio. The meal was just fine but this is not a fine dining experience and for that money, I'll go to 7 Acre or Union Hill Grill instead. read more

The service was deplorable. We were there for an hour waiting for our meal. Had to ask for refills of the water and only got "topped off" once. The food was mediocre at best. I had the Sea Bass and it was cooked with the skin on. I'm probably in the minority here but I would expect that when ordering sea bass, it would have been a filet. It was a lot of work to get to the actual fish. The other 2 people ordered a chicken salad sandwich (which he said was nothing special) and my other friend ordered the Caesar salad with shrimp. He said it was good. Keep in mind that when you go there it is REALLY LOUD. I finally gave up on having a conversation with either one of my friends. This was my second visit there. My wife and I went Saturday night and my filet was excellent while the chicken dish she ordered was OK. For the prices I expect a better quality of food and much better service. read more

Ate dinner here last night and are so excited to have a new restaurant in our area! We went with the understanding that there might be new opening wrinkles. Took about 45 minutes to get our drinks, a good 90 minutes to get our dinner and after trying to order three different wines that were on the menu only to be told they didn't have them, we settled on the only bottle them had. I had really hoped the manager would come introduce himself to our table but he never did. That's hospitality 101. We stayed a total of 3 hours which was ok with us because we were socializing. The cocktails were delish as well as the food. Not sure if the meal was worth the value but it was hot and tasty! Suggestions: 1. upgrade your wine list and make sure you have it on hand 2. Lose the Softsoap in the restrooms. Grab some lavender scented soaps in a lovely bottle. Simple but effective in raising the bar. Prices are upscale. The rest of your restaurant should follow suit.
