Extremely poor communication (so bad it has to be intentional) Tipping $500 (10x more than is standard) per person is what they will insist/demand from you ("offering" to go to your bank with you?!?). UPDATE: After six months of unexplained silence, customer service contacted me and offered me $100 to address the problems described below. I pointed out that the amount was less than half the cost of the tv set that their employees smashed, and they raised the offer to $199. I chose to accept that offer, which mostly covers the cost of replacing the tv set, not because it truly addresses my concerns but because I cannot spend any more time or energy dealing with them. I couldn't say anything worse about a company. Where to begin: First, their storage rates are significantly higher than others'. Second, when we booked them, they made the unilateral choice not to load our furniture into a pod; instead, they chose to load it into temporary storage and then charged us for loading the truck, unloading the truck, and then loading the truck and unloading again when we moved in. Finally, they damaged an expensive piece of furniture. For 4 MONTHS!! We have tried to contact them to at least pay us the legally required insurance. No avail. STAY AWAY! read more

9/27/25 I didn't want to have to write a review but I'm so tired of dealing with this even months later. We moved halfway across the country this past June from Texas to Maryland. We had the walkthrough and got a pricing quote from Alan for our 5 bedroom home for loading and moving. This quote involved a 3 day process: loading the trucks on day 1, and then 2 days for driving. We later added on packing services that we initially didn't think we would need. We expected this to add on another day for packing the entire home, but he assured us packing and loading could still be done on the same day. The problem was, he didn't notify the poor movers of this until the day before the job. They had barely any notice that they would be essentially working a 15 hour day on day 1 for packing up AND loading a 3500 sq ft house. By the end of the first day they were likely exhausted, and then had two days to drive over 1500 miles. To their credit, they did a great job considering the amount of stairs we have at our new home and how little sleep they must have been functioning on. The main problem we've run into now is that a charcoal grill was left at our old home. The lead for the moving team, Jim, assured me they would be able to pick it up and take it to the Unicorn warehouse when they were back in Texas, and could re-deliver it the next time there was a move in our area. That sounded great to me. We were moved in to our new home on June 20th. Jim confirmed with me on July 1st that our grill was picked up and was in their warehouse. That was the last I heard of it. I was told it would be 4-5 weeks until there would be a move in our area, so I was willing to patiently wait. I texted Jim to check in on August 11th to see if there was an ETA, no response. I texted him again on August 24th, again no response. I texted him a third time on September 2nd, again no response. I then called customer service on September 2nd and spoke to Cassandra, who said she would look in to it. On September 5th she called and asked for me to send a picture of our grill as there were two in their warehouse. I sent a picture that same day. This is the last I've heard from Cassandra. I called September 17th and left a voicemail, have not heard back. I called September 19th, no answer. No call back. I emailed Cassandra again on the 19th, no response. It has now been over three months since this all started, and we are no closer to getting this grill back since it was originally left in Texas back in June. This has been one of the most frustrating parts of an already stressful process of moving across the country with two small children while also being pregnant. Unicorn has completely stopped responding to my attempts at communication. Of course I do not recommend them. read more

I had never hired movers, but I'm disabled and can't walk much nor lift heavy boxes. My realtor recommended Unicorn Moving. Alan came and did my estimate 20 days before my move. I explained that I would have a lot of stuff packed before my move, so I questioned the $20,000 estimate. Alan said he overestimated because he didn't know how much I would box up, but I would only be charged for work done, which he thought would be less than $15,000. Since the estimate said $10,000-$15,000, I booked it. Steven was the lead mover of 8 movers and 4 trucks. Steven told me that a cash tip was expected, so I should go to a bank. I did a Google search that said $50 per mover was a generous tip. I was not able to supervise all 8 movers, but I gave directions about what I wanted. I noticed one of the movers packing a very big box, and I asked if the box would be heavy, because I can't lift much. He told me he was only putting light things in the big boxes. I asked another mover if they were labeling the boxes, and he said they were labeling boxes by room. Before leaving, Steven asked if I got the tip money. He was confused when I gave him $400, because he had wanted $4,000, $500 for each mover. I told him that was a lot. Steven said he could get the bill down to $9,000, so with the $4,000 tip, my total cost would be $13,000. I said I would need to get the cash from the bank in the morning. After Steven left, I texted him to see if he had accidentally taken my dolly. He said he would return it. I then texted him that we were cleaning up a lot of trash on the lawn- pizza crusts, empty bottles, empty tape rolls. My neighbors even complained that trash was left on their lawns, and several movers had been lying down on their lawn. (I suspect, so I could not see them.) I found it odd that the movers left so much trash when I had a dumpster. Steven apologized and said he would deduct some from the bill. I then went to shower and found out that my toiletries and towels had been packed up, so I couldn't brush my teeth, etc. Luckily, I had extra towels and could shower. In the morning, Steven said the total cost for the move would be $9,363.28. I said I was going to hold onto the $4,000 cash tip until I got the final total, because I didn't want them to change the total after they got their cash. I was moving stuff to my storage place and to my house in Houston. When I got to the house, Ryan came to get the keys for my storage units. I directed him to stack all my tubs together and to stack the boxes by room, and to save a walkway in the middle for easy access. Steven then arrived and started unloading at the house. Ryan came back after they had finished unloading at storage, and the other 6 movers helped Steven. When they were done, Steven told me that the movers were so mad from unloading at storage that they didn't want a cash tip anymore and wanted their hourly rate. I asked why the guys were upset, since the 10' x 30' units were roomy and on the first floor. Steven said the guys were upset that they had to unload really heavy boxes (which they packed) without a dolly and it was hard to move with 6 movers unloading. I asked why they didn't have any dollies, and Steven said the dollies were on his truck. I asked why they didn't come get them, since the storage place was less than a mile from the house. Steven said he didn't know, but my new total was almost $18,000. I was very upset, and Steven said he still wanted to work with me, and he could lower the bill to $14,300 if I gave them a $1,700 cash tip. I gave the $1,700 to Steven which he distributed to the movers, and they left without showing me what they had done. At my house, boxes had been thrown into the shed with a pile of unboxed clothes on top. At storage, the first unit was crowded, the light switch was blocked, and there was no walkway. My second unit also had the light switch blocked, but there was a walkway. None of the boxes were labeled. And there were several huge open boxes where stuff had been thrown in. Later, I saw that I was billed for $16,972.67, and not $14,300. read more

We got movers for our heavy stuff, but they put it in the storage unit so haphazardly that we had to rent another storage unit because they had blocked the entrance with all the heavy furniture. There were midsize things as well, and there was not any attempt to stack things, they just strewed things around. However, it was incredibly easy to schedule an appointment and the prices would be quite fair had the move been completed to my satisfaction. read more

Original Review Date - 15 January 2025 TL;DR: UNICORN MOVING ROCKS - They truly are EXCEPTIONAL and are absolutely the Best of Austin! Let me start by saying that I REALLY lucked out with Unicorn Moving. I met one of their movers, Jim, whilst I was living and working in Austin, and when he told me that he was a mover and for which company he works, I knew in my gut that they would be my go-to guys for a move I had planned for the beginning of 2025. However, for a long-distance move that actually required professional movers (I've moved 20 times prior to this move and I've never had to hire a moving company before), I felt as though I should put the job out for bid, which I did so through this site and locally in Austin. All told, I put the bid out to ten (10) different companies. The contingency upon which winning the bid was predicated was that I could not and would not be present for the loading of the furniture but I would be present to receive it at the destination. I narrowed the list based on which companies could move residential belongings across state lines, and then I had narrowed it down to three (3) companies, all of whom agreed to my not-present-in-Austin stipulation. Unfortunately, I chose the least expensive bid, even though they were all within range (meaning a couple hundred dollars). Well, like toilet paper and tax prep, you get what you pay for, if you'll pardon the ungrammatical sentence. That said, please allow me to tell you some of the ways Unicorn Movers ROCK! I fired my "first choice/budget" moving company at 17:20 on Christmas Eve when they called me a liar and told me that they never agreed to move my belongings without my personally being present at both the pick up and drop off points. I called Unicorn the day after Christmas, told them what happened with the other moving company, and they, too, were flabbergasted but thrilled to have won the business. They absolutely took the reins, showed up SAME DAY within a FEW HOURS to do an in-person inventory so as to get the quote as close to accurate and final as possible (Brent, AKA Captain of Christmas Sparkles, was amazing! The quote actually went DOWN! Kimberly, who answered my panicked call, was super reassuring and immediately grasped the urgency of the situation and did not try to take advantage of it or me.) Luckily, they assigned Jim to oversee the move, and he and Spencer stayed in touch, asking questions when needed but other than that, they didn't need much from me (read: they didn't pester me with a ton of questions whist I was getting the house ready to receive the furniture). I was able to sign all the paperwork digitally. They worked with my property management company to gain access to my apartment and garage, loaded up, hit the road, and showed up with everything safe and sound at 09:00 the next day. They had the truck unloaded, the sofa and bed reassembled, and were heading back to Austin in an hour. Yes, ONE HOUR. I actually overpaid and Jim was (of course) honest enough to kindly point out that I had. My very over-tired brain had stopped working at that point, and this is where I think I found the most value - I was able to rely on them to act with integrity and honesty, even when I was not at my best (long-distance moves are exhausting, to say the least, for so many reasons). I hope to NEVER move again but if I do, I will hire Unicorn again in a heartbeat with no qualms at all, and I offer you my highest recommendation of them as an exceptional company with hopes that you can avoid the almost-panic and craziness that I went through with the other company prior to hiring Unicorn. Most of the employees are veterans, they have quite impressive hiring requirements for their staff, and they have a TON of experience and professionalism coming out of their ears. They are not an home table company. When we asked for help packing they sent in people who cared nothing about our things and did not listen to our instructions. On top of that, one of the movers placed an open container with a candle and sand in a box.. did not take anything out just placed an open container of sand in a box with my son's hearing aids!!! They ruined my son's hearing aids and cost me $5,000 to replace them. When asked to pay for them the owner would not return calls and is never in the office. They will not answer my calls and have not done the honerable thing and paid for my son's hearing aids! Despicable! Untrustworthy, and the quality of work is awful! read more

Third time moving with Unicorn, this time to a different unit within the same apartment complex, so all we needed was help with the really difficult stuff: washer, dryer, mattresses, the really heavy furniture. Getting an estimate was easy, and the price was competitive. Movers Juan and Antione arrived ahead of schedule, paid attention to my anxious concerns, put far more effort into protecting everything during transport than I was expecting, and finished well within the time I had allocated. When one of the adjustable feet fell off the dryer in transit, Antione helped me find it (it had rolled off a breezeway and fallen into a courtyard below), and then Juan re-attached it and helped me adjust the appliance to be level again. It was a two day move with multiple stops - but the guys from Unicorn were happy to accommodate. The movers and staff seemed nice enough -- but they also didn't make any effort to explain that if they have to walk more than 100 feet while picking up or dropping off your stuff that it will cost you considerably more and they also just eye ball the distance so I'm still not sure they had to cover a full 100 --- it was unbelievably hot the day of my move so i let them charge me double my estimate (went from under $500 to just barely under $1000) but I stilll get mad just thinking about it. Unicorn Moving and Storage gave an estimate for 3 hours and a travel fee (to cover travel there and back after the move that was not included in the 3 hours). Our movers: Robert F and Ryan communicated when they were on their way, when they arrived, and how they planned to tackle the job once they saw everything we needed to pack. This company rocks! From start to finish, I am so so impressed with Unicorn. The online quote process was super easy and my new bud Chili took great care of me. He was responsive and offered a competitive quote. Then I had a question about an oversized item and Mark, the owner, reached out personally !!!! We got my concerns taken care of ( due to the size and value of the item) and he assured me that his team would take care of it. Then Kimberly called for confirmation the day before and shared the names of my team members assisting me with the move... and on the morning of the move within the window of the time provided - Sean and Artie reached out to share they were on the way!
