Went here last night for a date night and had a great time! We made reservations a few hours before for 7 and the place was full at that time. Super fun experience and loved the tiki beachy vibe. Porthole windows throughout as well as an hourly "thunderstorm" where the lights go out and it's thundering and lightning. Drink list was fun and drinks were strong! read more

Went with my wife for our anniversary. Very nice concept. Place is small but never felt over crowded. Drinks are very unique....most have at least 6 Ingredients. You must make a reservation and that is for a 90 minute time limit. Our waitress was awesome and very knowledgeable on the drinks. Pricey so I personally would only go again for a special occasion or if another couple wanted to check it out. It's worth a visit for sure. read more

Have never been disappointed with the experience we get here. This is definitely a favorite place to bring friends when they stop in to visit. I recently recommended this spot for my neighbor to take his girlfriend to and they had a blast! There's no food here but the 2 hours you spend here you don't need to worry about food. I love coming in and watching the bartenders work their magic. The set up alone looks like a bartenders dream! I've worked behind many bars in my day and I wish I had a setup like theirs at a few of the places I've worked. The inside is super cool! It's decorated like you're in the belly of a ship crossing the ocean with little portholes that show an ocean view to really make you feel like you're in a ship. Every now and then they have a rainstorm. And then there's the drinks! Some of the most amazing drinks I've ever tasted! Everything is so well balanced and delicious! We've been going to Undertow since it opened in Arcadia. We've been to the new undertow in Gilbert twice. Some drinks have been good others have been just ok. Why the weird employee fee??????? During our 90 minute visit our first drinks took over 25 minutes to get. We have been to over 50 tiki bars that are super busy and have amazing drinks and they can handle a busy night with only 2 bartenders and sometimes no servers. Just don't understand why undertow is the way it is. Wish it was a more casual tiki vibe. We will still bring friends to undertow when they come to town but don't think it will be our local tiki watering hole. read more

We went back to Undertow last night and had the experience we were hoping for the first time. Service was perfect, drinks were quick and tasty, and most importantly we were given the full allotted time for the reservation (we were actually seated about 10 minutes early and we left a few minutes before our time was up) but communication between our table and the hostess was great as we were given all warnings when our time would be ending. Highlights for us were the Jungle Bird, Exit Strategy, Sunrise Over Baja, Bonaparte's Loss and the Scorpion Bowl. Overall our experience was great and for sure deserving of 5 stars. We decided to check out somewhere new (for us) last night, so after a cheeky cocktail at Blue Heron (highly recommended) we booked a reservation (mandatory) for 10pm. We were seated right on the 10pm chime...got a fantastic seat right next to a porthole. The bar is smaller than we expected, from my count you can seat around 42 people in there max. Our server Nico (please forgive me if spelled incorrectly) was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The whole crew looked like they were having fun at work! Hubs had "Silhouette of a man" a mezcal based cocktail; delicious! I had "Henderson's last journey" a gin based cocktail...also delicious. I had a second gin based cocktail the Nico recommended after asking a couple of questions, but I totally missed the name; it was my favorite! The bar is decorated extremely well, with creaking sound effects, even in the "washroom"... we had fun and will definitely be returning to the high seas for some grog! read more

The ambiance of Undertow is legendary and their Gilbert location is no different. Exotic tikis and details packed into every niche! During our 90 minutes the ship encountered two storms, water washes the port holes, the lighting turns blue, and you can hear(and feel!) the thunder! Great drinks, great ambiance, great bartender. Had a negative experience checking in which soured the night. We had a reservation for 9:30 but wrapped up dinner early and as the website states walk-ins welcome, I checked-in at 9:00 to see if we could be seated early. We were informed that there was a little wait but we would be seated as soon as possible and would receive a text when our seats were ready. About 10 minutes later, we got the text and headed back to the check-in area (we were about 2 minutes away so got back quickly). Apparently there had been some confusion and the text had been sent in error, our table would not be ready until the original reservation time. All of that is fine, people make mistakes. However there was no acknowledgment of the mistake from any of the staff to us (the other two people standing there pointed to the screen and said to the host, you did text them) and no apology for it. When I showed the text, the host just said "it'll be 9:30." This may seem like a trivial complaint, but I have been excited to come to Undertow for a while and was expecting an outstanding experience from beginning to end. This was hands down the dumbest concept with an absolutely over inflated sense of uniqueness. It's essentially an adult-ish Pirates of the Caribbean experience, without the actual boat ride. 2-Stars for the interesting drink menu with beautiful presentation, but definitely NOT worth a visit, especially if you are claustrophobic. read more

This fun tiki bar is small and it's difficult to get reservations, especially for bigger groups. We went midday and walking into the dark ship-like atmosphere, out of the Arizona sun meant we couldn't see for about 10 minutes while our eyes adjusted. They give you a strict 1.5 hours to enjoy your time there. At an hour, the host came and told us we only had about 30 more minutes to "reach our destination." The attention to detail in their decorations is evident, from butterflies that move their wings and breeziness when a storm rolls through in the bar area, to being able to hear the creaking ship in the bathrooms. The drinks were delicious, if overpriced. We got the Blue Hawaii, the Fireside, and my favorite - Lei Lani Volcano. We also tried the Chains to the Mast! shots, which were not very good. The server said the Warning Across the Bow! would have been better. It was a fun time and I plan to go again. read more

Only caveat would be to allow the bartenders freedom to make their own craft drinks for customers to exercise their take on flavor profiles. 2. Reviewing the ownership/customer service. That is the reason for the combined 5 stars on experience/bar and 1 star on customer service. I called 3 separate times to try to schedule a group of 15 for my wife's birthday as you can only book up to 6 online. No call backs. Finally get a hold of guy at gilbert location who tells me to send an email to C. SNYDER.....no response whatsoever after 2 additional attempts. He sent the business card so I know I sent the email correctly. This is massively disappoitlnting from a customer perspective. If you want to change my opinion of my review....call me. I left the number multiple times. Very frustrated when trying to spend an inordinate amount of money to cover a bar tab for 15 people x $18 drinks x 4 drinks a person in 90 minutes= $1,080 plus $250 bartender tip= $1,330.00 read more

We decided to go opening weekend because we loved the original undertow in PHX. This bar is tiny and it was super warm inside since it was full of people. Our service was mediocre. The bartender didn't explain the drinks, and had no idea when we asked specific questions. I was hoping for a far better experience after having to pay a service fee plus the reservation fee. The drinks were mediocre as well. Not worth the price imo. Lastly, the hostess reminding us you have X amount of minutes every 15 minutes really annoyed the heck out of us. We know we only have 90 minutes, just let us know once, 15 min before perhaps? Otherwise, ambience is cool. Drinks are ok. We might come back but not for a little while. read more

My buddy An I had just tried the Platform 18 Bar the other day by the same company and I had wrote a gleaming review for it... But this will not be that. I was excited to see this experience as well, knowing how great of a time we had at the previous bar. In the overall the ambiance and drinks were fine and good, it was the service that was terrible. I'll preface by saying the support staff and manager who greeted us were very nice and provided solid service, but it was our Bartender Stefan/Stephon who really ruined the entire experience. At the time we sat down, we had waited 25-30 mins before he had came over to ask us what we would want, and at that time he asked it was asked harshly to, " what do you want?" In a coarse tone. He presumably thought that my friend and I were on the same tab as this random couple sitting next to us, while he never once asked if we needed more water, or how our drinks were. His general demeanor came off as "Annoyed". It was frustrating to then see he was flirting with the girls to our right and providing nice service to them, but completely the opposite with us. Lastly, the most frustrating thing was when he came to give us water when I had politely asked him, I held my cup for him so he could simply pour into my cup. He didn't pour and instead stared at me until I put the cup down and then poured. It was disrespectful and rude. This gentleman should not be in the service industry as he has a lack of customer service skills. I'm an out of towner from Texas, but I come to visit the Phoenix area often, I can't see myself returning to this bar due to how awful his service was and how upset he made myself and my friend feel. It's a shame especially for the price you're paying for the drinks and being forced out of a bar when you have your last drink even though it wasn't full at this time of night.. it was sad, and truly hope that this bartender finds another gig or goes back to some form of customer service schooling. Overpriced. They make you pay a 3 dollar convenience fee per person just to enter the bar and you don't get that back. Drinks weren't that great and no "immersive" experience. Bartenders are still trying to figure out the cocktails but this should get better with time. Was very excited and this bar was very underwhelming. Horrible service. They seat you late, then expect you to adhere to their 90 minute reservation. Then they take 30 mins to service your drinks. When you question them on their time limit because you simply want to finish your drink, they harass you and force you to leave. After spending $500 they tell you a week later that you are no longer invited because of the way your staff told the story. Shame on you. Worst customer service ever! We went for our 22nd anniversary. Drinks were truly amazing, service was awesome, but there were some issues. Our reservation was from 7:00-8:30. At 7:45, a girl came around and said we had 30 minutes left. We actually had 45. Then our tab was delivered shortly after--it was barely 8:00. We were talking to the table next to us (at 8:22) about the drinks we had and how fabulous they were. The same person from earlier told us we needed to leave. I let her know that we still had 8 minutes left on our reservation. If I had to sum up my visit in one word it would be "RUDE." It wasn't exactly an experience I want to remember for my anniversary, or one I care to repeat. Her behavior was so bad that the people we stopped to talked to actually told the person at the door that she was rude to us. Because of her behavior, there are two couples who don't care to return.
