This second outpost of Underbelly Burger is relatively new. Like the OG version of UB at the Airline Drive Farmers Market, this eatery is attached to a sand volleyball court complex that also has a full bar. Looks like a fun place to come and play and eat. This review is only for the restaurant. It was a weekday for lunch and when I arrived shortly after 12:00 pm there were 3 people eating there. Two were outside on the patio and one was inside. This place has a large parking lot (for the volleyball games) and it was kind of dead with a large and basically empty parking lot with 3 patrons dining at the peak lunch time. Bad omen. I ordered at the counter the classic burger combo for $17. Two employees were working that day and my food was ready in less than 10 minutes after ordering. With just two workers that day, I think they expected a slow crowd. They were right. The burger came dressed with two angus beef patties, cheese and dressed on a sesame seed bun. It was a decent tasting hamburger and cheesy but taste wise was more of a 3 than a 4. The fries here are curly and thick. Kind of unusual especially with their thickness. So thick that it's almost like eating a small potato with a very hot center. I like fries but these were a little too thick for my tastes. I only ate half of my serving which was generous in size. Like the original location I thought my meal rated a 3 score. Not bad but also nothing really pulling me back. Underbelly Burger was the perfect dinner after some sand volleyball next door at the Decoy. The place was empty at 730pm on a Wednesday, and I honestly don't know why, this burger spot was great! I wish I got the name of the lady working at the counter, but she was so friendly! She made some great recommendations that were really tasty. I ended up going with the Fuego Burger, added grilled serrano peppers, sidewinder fries, and a side of their ranch. 10/10 would get this burger combo again! Their ranch with those seasoned fries were top tier for sure. Ambiance wise, this place is very casual and fun. It has a little bit of a retro burger vibe while still being clean and inviting. This restaurant was located in a moderately accessible location near Katy Fwy and Gessner in Houston. The menu board was not easy to follow, but the cashier was very helpful. The total price of my meal was right under $20. It included a waygu burger with cheese, a generous portion of fries, and a fountain drink. I needed to use the restroom when I arrived. It was clean and well stocked. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with an old school nostalgia touch. My burger was just ok. I probably did not need their special sauce. It would have been just ok to taste the meat and cheese rather than have the flavor over powered by the toppings. The fries were unique, fresh, hot, and very good. I got lemonade from the fountain and it tasted like water. I alerted the staff to change the bag in the box, and the issue was resolved immediately. Yeah.... It's a resounding NO for me. I should have trusted the majority of the reviews but I wanted to give them a shot and try a new burger spot. The location is nice and looks new-ish. There's a ton of parking, outdoor seating and what appears to be volleyball courts connected to the business next-door. I'm sure this could be a vibe when the Houston weather is right. When I arrived around 1 PM there was no one there except the employees. I was promptly greeted by a young man, he took my order and began cooking it immediately. I ordered a kid cheeseburger combo with lettuce, pickles, fries, and a drink for my son. I ordered a mushroom swiss double wagyu combo, added grilled onions with onion rings and a drink for myself. The total was $38.93! Pretty darn pricey. After ordering, I got my little ones seated, then proceeded to get our drinks and ketchup. The only other condiments they provided was pepper and Valencia hot sauce. I thought the selection was minimal. No special sauces, no bbq, and no salt. We waited about 10 minutes for our burgers and went to the restroom right before the order was completed. When we returned from the restroom, I noticed our order was in a bag on the table, as if we were taking it to go. There were no plates, dine in trays or placemats provided. I thought that was interesting. I opened my son's burger and placed his fries on top of the wrapper with his burger. First impression was that his burger looked basic, small and sloppy. I began to open my burger and was immediately disappointed and confused. My mushroom swiss double wagyu burger combo did not come with their famous sesame bun, and I have no clue why.. I saw those buns sitting out on the counter, and the three people that came in after me all got the sesame bun. The size of my burger felt small and looked like a child's combo compared to theirs. I scanned the menu several times and did not see a bun selection or an up charge for sesame buns. I proceeded to eat the burger and my immediate first thought was "damn this is bland". I took a sip of my drink then a second bite. I carefully examined my second bite and concluded that the burger totally lacked any flavor other than the unseasoned ingredients. What a let down!! I also didn't notice anything special about the wagyu beef.. like it just tasted like 80/20 ground beef to me. I don't get the hype. The fries are like curly wedges vs a traditional french fries and the ranch seasoning or whatever that is was yummy. The onion rings were fresh and bite size which I did like with ketchup. I ate half of my burger and was relieved when my son asked for the rest of mine so I didn't feel like I wasted money. I have no intentions of ever coming here again and would not recommend to anyone. If you appreciate flavor please consider going elsewhere. If you like basic, plain, unseasoned meat this is for you. My recommendation to this business would be to invest in some Kinders seasoning or make your own low sodium blend. From the moment my partner and I walked in the staff was friendly. When we were debating whether to get the classic burger or the fuego burger, staff make a good suggestion for fuego burger. When I saw they had a 15% off discount for healthcare personnel, the lady asked for my ID which I did not have with me, so I showed my workplace email. I said I could a picture of myself and coworkers in our scrubs, and the lady was like "Anyone can wear a halloween costume as a nurse." I want to express how deeply offensive and disheartening that comment was. In a time when nursing and other healthcare professions are already fighting for recognition and respect in this political climate, reducing our work to a "Halloween costume" is incredibly hurtful. Nurses are not costumes -- we are trained professionals who care for patients who are sick, vulnerable, and often fighting for their lives. Comments like this diminish the seriousness of what we do and contribute to a culture where nursing is undervalued. I understand the need to verify eligibility for a discount, but it could have been handled with professionalism and respect. My friend and I tried Underbelly Burger for the first time. What a disappointment. First the good: Our order taker was friendly, immediately greeted us, and she was helpful with suggestions plus answering questions. Now for the rest: the place was completely empty. To be fair, it was a cold and rainy day. The inside is very small with limited seating. There is only one booth seating spot to fit 2 people. They have a decent size outdoor patio, but again, the weather was not good to be outside. Our goal was to order a couple items to share so we could both try a couple items. We settled on the Wagyu burger with a side of onion rings and the Chicken Bit Box with fries. When our order was ready, the girl called our names from the counter. First of all, she saw where we were sitting, the place had no one in there except us, so why wouldn't she bring the food to the table for us? Secondly, we explained we were going to split the meal, and we were ordering to eat at the restaurant. With this information, you would think the order would be placed on a tray. The order was handed to me in a bag with a boat type sleeve of the burger topping on the side. We asked for them on the side, so that was fine, but why no tray to carry all this stuff to the table. Not a huge deal, and we made it work. It's just strange for her not to have paid attention to those details. She did seem rattled when we placed our order, so maybe she was having an off day. The best thing about the burger was the bun. They use Martin's Potato Rolls. They are awesome. These are the buns I buy when making burgers at home. They are loaded with sesame seeds, and they are perfectly fluffy. I do not recall them being so much on the small size. The burger looked exceptionally small. The onion rings are thicker than I prefer. They tasted okay. The Chicken Bit Box. BIT is the optimum word and very tiny pieces of chicken that I am not sure should even be called chicken. My friend cut one open and the meat was brown. Definitely not white meat chicken. The fries that come with the bit box are those thick semi curled fries. Some were so thick they didn't get fried well. All in all, it was so poor, I would not even consider giving this place another try. That's one of the reasons I like getting a couple items to split. If one thing is bad, you can give grace, but if everything is bad, that's a problem. The portions are small, the indoor seating selection is small, the drink selection is small, the customer service is small, but the bill was large. $38.83 and that's with a 15% tip which really peeves me. I tipped! Smaller than I would for full service, but more than I normally do for counter service. So tired of that at the screen tip shaming situation. What in the heck did the tip go toward because it certainly wasn't service or quality. Maybe this place was good at first. Seems to be a trend these days to get it right at the beginning, then sluff off as the time goes on. I visited during a Texans watch party at the joining bar The Decoy, which doesn't serve food. Service was relatively quick, which I was expecting as the menu is limited. I like streamlined menus, as you can tend to anticipate extremely well executed food when the selection is small. Went with the Wagyu Burger with everything on it. It s a very traditional double cheeseburger that didn't miss in anyway. Plenty of beef and cheese with condiments that are fresh and cut through the richness. Nice looking seasame seed bun and not too greasy or messy while staying juicy. It didn't stand out too much though, and if you're gonna charge $13 for just the burger it's gotta be in your face good. I asked the staff members if the beef was also hormone/antibiotic free and neither of them knew so I'm assuming it's not. It was a good burger but IMO way too much house sauce. This is an expensive price point for a burger but after reading a little more about the company's mission of sustainability, I presumed this price point came as a result of the means involved in that mission. While I can understand most people wouldn't want to pay more than double the normal price of a burger in the name of sustainability, I can appreciate their intentions and be willing to pay up in order to try it out. If I'm being completely honest the burger was underwhelming. It was an OK burger and I would say its main strengths were that the lettuce and tomato tasted extremely fresh and the bun with extra sesame seeds was very tasty. The patties and the cheese both lacked flavor which was the main source of my disappointment. I think Underbelly Burger has a lot of potential. They have an honorable mission, very friendly staff, and a cool atmosphere. I just wish that the taste of the burger matched its reputation and price point. I originally passed this place by for YEARS without going in, then one day I decided, "eh, might as well. I was genuinely surprised that the place felt like it just came out of the 50s and decided to get with the times. The menu is very short, but that just means that everything is made fresh. The burgers are made classic with good quality meats and with a side of fries that I didn't know could be that shape. Their fries are some of the crunchiest and simultaneously some of the fluffiest I have ever put in my mouth. I don't know how they make them, but good God, they better patent them. Still traumatized from my first and last experience at underbelly. More than half way into my kale salad I discovered a maggot. I immediately felt sick to my stomach. I sent an email nearly a month ago to the restaurant to provide them feedback and I have yet to receive a response. On top of this awful experience, I found the prices to be too high for the portion and the burger was less than impressive. The burger was small, dry and lacked flavor. The cashier was friendly, but the rest of the staff did not seem customer centric. I was excited to support a new local business but I will not be a returning customer. Disappointed they did not have the decency to acknowledge my concern as a customer.
