Horrible service! Only one other table of three in the restaurant at the time we went (party of 2). My order - please do not add sauce to my bowl of chicken and cashews. Brought bowl with so much sauce it was standing in the bottom of the bowl. Argued with me that I had told him no sauce. Husbands order - ordered pad Thai with shrimp with no onions and peppers. Bowl came half full of onions and peppers. Sent it back. Waiter was rude but took it. Replacement bowl had ONLY noodles and CHICKEN. Again, tried to send it back and waiter argued that he had ordered noodles and chicken (ordered Pad Thai with shrimp). Finally told them to just keep it. He went away hungry. No refills (water). This place did not disappoint. It's tucked away in Evendale. You will love it! I had the vegetable lo mein and the green beans which come with rice. Both are filling and inexpensive. Overall, I would probably look elsewhere than this spot. They offer a good variety of lunch specials for a fair price. I placed a to go order for the Mongolian beef with fried rice online which was about a 10 to 1 ratio of onions to beef. Also, I received white rice rather than fried. If ordering from here, I'd advise avoiding the online ordering. What a disappointment. Just left Uncle Yip's for Christmas dinner, and it wasn't worth the effort. Seriously, just order Chinese from any other generic place and you'll get the same quality food--minus the lacking customer service/attention and unpardonable wait times Had a reservation for 2 for dinner at 3pm, and was happy to arrive and be immediately seated. That was where the efficiency ended. We had a nice, but very slow older gentlemen, attendant. He literally went to get our drinks ONE AT A TIME. I'll admit they were made correctly, but it took ten minutes to get two cocktails to the table at the same time. It was painful to watch him slowly inspect bottles one at a time at the bar to ensure he had the right bottle. Note: we did not order anything "special." There was serious confusion on the dim sum. I went specifically for that (which I specified on the phone when I made the reservation), only to realize that not only was dim sum over, but it looked as if the leftover dim sum from the morning that was left sitting on the cart was being used to fulfill to-go orders. Appalled, I asked a young lady who informed me that employees ate the leftovers, and indeed I saw at least 5 employees randomly going through the leftovers to pick out their meal items...while their tables sat around waiting for service Kudos on eliminating waste and taking care of your employees, but could they NOT go on break in the middle of waiting on tables?! At that point we should have left, but it's Christmas and I'm hungry, so I settled in for the ridiculousness. I was not disappointed when our food came out both piecemeal and undercooked. We ordered shrimp fried rice and chicken fried rice. Those are standard dishes, right? Well, the basic ingredients were there, but flavor was not. I wanted to leave everything behind, but my bf insisted we take what we'd paid for and just fix it at home. That's right, I'm heading home to season and cook my leftovers so I can have a meal on Christmas Day We never got the steamed dumplings I ordered, which was really the only reason I made the trek to this establishment! Good authentic Cantonese cuisine restaurants are hard to find outside of cities w/o large Chinese populations or "Chinatowns" and Cincinnati is no exception. Uncle Yips is one of 2 area places that claim to serve dim sum and other authentic Cantonese dishes so we gave it a try. Totally hit and miss on so many counts. Tucked in a corner of an innocuous Reading Road strip mall, we had high hopes when we saw their menu had dim sum and other traditional noodle dishes. We ordered 6 assorted dim sum plates, Singapore fried rice noodle, and 2 noodle soup bowls. Some dim sum were very good (fried turnip cake), and some were bad (small cold bbq pork steamed buns). At $5 a dish, you'd save a lot of $ and do better buying frozen dim sum from an Asian grocer and cooking it yourself. The noodle dishes were pedestrian, lacking strong flavors or quantity. Nothing was inedible but much of it was meh. The noodle soup stock was oily. Service was confused with probably 3-4 dining room staff trying to help and 3-4 kitchen staff randomly popping out of the kitchen. Due to language abilities and lack of clarity of their duties, ordering dishes was bordering on confusing. The effort was there, the execution, less so. This place has promise (good varied menu, friendly industrious staff), but was so inconsistent in every way that it'd be hard to give them another try knowing the high probability that I'd be disappointed. read more

Went for dim sum this past Sunday. We were greeted promptly and seated in a primo spot. So much variety made it hard to choose but we managed The wait staff checked on our drinks frequently and if there was anything we needed. Chicken feet, fried tofu, steamed pork buns were just a few of the dishes we had. Topped off with tre pineapple custard bun, just a touch of sweetness to end the meal. My family was jonesing for some dim sum after a recent trip to San Francisco. Uncle Yip's is on the other side of town to where we are but we rolled the dice and tried it out. It's located in a strip mall. Things started slowly. There's nothing to guide you as to whether you sit down or wait to be seated, but after we got our drinks and perused the menu, things got going. We were ostensibly there for dim sum but ended up ordering from the regular menu as well. And good grief it was delicious! Even my somewhat picky children enjoyed it. Highlight for me was the peppered beef. I could eat that forever. Honorable mention for the shrimp dumplings! We got there as soon as it opened, and there were already three or four other parties outside the restaurant, waiting !! While we were there, it got busier and busier. Nevertheless, there are tons of spacious seating if you happen to come later in the afternoon. The carts come by super fast, so we were eating within minutes. Well, I gave Uncle Yip's another chance last night. Instead of lunch alone, this time it was for dinner with a group of 16 people (two tables of 8) Most of our group enjoyed it, but my experience was unfortunately almost the same as last time. It was difficult to figure out who our server was. The first guy was kinda blase and after taking our drink orders, pretty much disappeared thereafter. Then an Oriental lady with a mask came and asked us if we had any questions about the menu. Remembering my last experience with the green peppers, I asked about what was in another dish, the Spicy Sizzling Beef. The mask muffled much of what she said, but she described it as hot and spicy, which I like. Then a third male server came and asked us if we were ready to order.A wide variety of dishes were ordered at our table. I again got egg rolls and hot and sour soup, which were good. I specifically asked for TWO dipping sauces for the egg rolls as one dinky container is not enough. But when it came, there was only one, so it took me 10 minutes to get someone's attention to bring another one. There was a major misstep involving the timing of our entrees. Ironically, mine was brought out first and fairly quickly. The remainder were brought out one at a time in such a fashion that the lady sitting next to me waited 20 minutes later to get hers. Not good. I all fairness, most people enjoyed their dishes, but mine unfortunately had some of the same problems as last time. It had a little heat (no hot peppers visible) and little spice. But AGAIN, it was about 60% GREEN PEPPERS with a minimal amount of beef and onion and 4 or 5 slivers of squash. No hot peppers were noted. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is with this place and green peppers, but as a result they have lost me as a future customer. Someone else ordered Kung Pau chicken which has no green peppers and is probably what I should have ordered. Then when it came time to get the checks, they seemed surprised that we wanted separate checks, except for 2 couples, one at each table. (They should have asked about the check arrangement at the beginning.) At least 20 or 25 minutes went by with no checks. Finally, our rep had to go up to the server and ask what the problem was. He told her that we would each have to stop at the register, tell them what they had and pay there. That worked OK but took quite a while. I've seen some good reviews for this place, but it seems like hit or miss to me. Most of the food is well prepared, but there's a lot more to a good restaurant than just the quality of the food and Uncle Yip's misses on too many levels for me to return soon. I wish to emphasize that I am not a complainer and I do not look for things to criticize- most of my reviews are 4 stars-this is the longest negative review and update that I have ever written and I wish to caution future diners--don't order anything with green peppers in it or you will likely be disappointed. After years of reading reviews about Uncle Yip's, it was finally time to check it out myself. I have been craving Chinese food all week, so it felt meant to be. The spacious dining room was the perfect setting for a business meeting and the fun lights over the bar added so much to the ambiance. I ordered General Tso's chicken with fried rice and steamed shrimp dumplings. The chicken was pretty average and the rice was a little less flavorful than I hope for fried rice to be. But overall, it was a satisfying meal and I would go back to try other dishes. I really enjoyed the steamed shrimp dumplings and would definitely order them again. The service took the experience up a notch as the server was SO friendly. It was a little odd to be told I couldn't order lo mein with my chicken, but I like fried rice, so it ended up being okay. I was craving lobster with spring onion and ginger so I took a drive. Although a specialty of the house, there was no lobster available Wednesday at 6 pm! Waitress told me people sometimes bring their own for the chef to cook. So I ordered peking duck with was obviously reheated. Love the food. It's a legit dim sum place in a tired and old shopping plaza. They actually had congee! But the key here is patience. I ordered out for a pick up and waited 45 min longer. The yummy smells and dishes coming out of the kitchen was pure torture. I watched the waitservers, mom, dad, daughter running or walking quickly from kitchen to tables serving their patrons. Had some comically BAD service last night on our first visit, since there arent many dim sum "type" places in Cincinnati. No cart service here, apparently only on weekends. Got there around 6:30, with maybe two or three other tables already seated. Waited for about 10 minutes before we even were given a menu and another 10 to put in a drink order (waiter scurried away before we could order food to go with it). The table closest to us was apparently fed up with the wait and the food that came out, offered to pay for what they had eaten so far but wanted to get out of there ASAP bc service was so bad. After being walked past many times, a lady out of the back finally came and took our order. All the food was actually very tasty which is why it wasnt a one star experience (Im looking forward to reheating the lo mein and 2 leftover siu mai for lunch) but the service was abysmal. I thought I was in a Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm episode, or a hidden camera show. The lack of attention and wait between ordering piece meal. No lie, they would run away from the table after getting the first part of your order, so we went drink --wait 10 mins, then order lo mein -- then finally order dim sum dishes in about 40 minutes. Was really craving Xiao Long Bao so ordered the 8 piece. Also got General Tso's, Kung Pao chicken, and pork-friend rice. For dim sum we got the chili stuffed shrimp and sticky rice with sausage. The dim sum options were great! I would recommend if eating here to just stick to the dim sum menu. This is clearly what the restaurant does well. For those who aren't familiar with dim sum it is typically a bunch of small dishes that you share with friends, like tapas or a bunch of appetizers for dinner. I would say 3-4 dim-sum dishes per person then you share with the table, so 5 people 15-20 dim-sum dishes (or more!). Both Kung Pao and General Tso's dishes were very bad though. And most sad of all the Xiao Long Bao soup dumplings had no soup. So wouldn't recommend the non-dim sum dishes. But if you haven't tried dim sum and are looking for a new experience then check this place out! read more
