Came back again earlier today with my wife hoping for the same experience before she left to go back home to Seattle and was seriously disappointed. We got sat in the back corner hoping to enjoy dim sum and all we got was tea and some fried sticky rice. All she wanted was some steam spare ribs. We waited for 10 minutes and no waiters came to ask if we needed anything. She then got up and talked to the waitress about an order of steamed spare ribs and she said it would be out in 10 minutes. 20 minutes went by and 5 parties that came after us all got served. She was furious and got up and left while I paid for the 2 items. This time around was not a good experience since we were there just a couple days ago. read more

Sorry to say.... But Service was slow and one of us never got our food until the rest of us were finished. They just said we are busy when we asked where her food was and nothing done to compensate for extremely delayed meal that she pretty much took to go. No water refills Not very clean either. The vegetable fried rice was non existent of vegetables. The ones that were there were very small like the sliced one piece of broccoli for the whole dish. The bok choy was very oily. The waiter said it was corn oil. Not a fan. The veggie spring rolls were good. This place was on my list to try. I doubt I will be back. read more

How nice! We stopped here randomly and we are glad we did. There is a good amount of seating. Very traditional and they have a lot of beautiful artwork and things to look at. The lighting is calming the seating is comfortable. The service was quick and very attentive and everyone was very friendly. We had the Shanghai Bao Buns which were warm and flavorful. Then we both had the Beef Stew Wonton Noodles. The broth had amazing flavor and was very hearty with noodles, wontons, beef, and bok choy. I absolutely LOVE dim sum, and it's been sooooooooooo long since I've had it, and would GLADLY again drive 1+ hours again TOMORROW to get MORE at Uncle Yip's cozy, POPULAR restaurant!! So many wonderful, DELICIOUS choices, as usual I wanted one of EVERYTHING, and probably would have sampled MUCH more, but my dining companions were much more "sensible" (boring?!?) eaters than I am!! Went for Christmas Day dinner as I've always wanted the Christmas Story experience. It was very crowded, but totally to be expected. I made a reservation, that was lost, however they managed to seat our party within 10 min. Once seated, we were told our food would take about an hour to arrive, which I appreciated. Once we sat, we received our drinks within about 20 min. After our food order had been placed for about 30 min, I was told that the special lobster dish I ordered would take at least 2 hours. I promptly cancelled that and I believe that the issue that occurred is our whole order may have been cancelled vs just the dish. After waiting for another 1.5 hrs for food and watching the restaurant clear out around us, we were finally asked what we had ordered. It was then our meal began to come out in waves and we finally opted for takeout. While I totally understood how busy the day was, I was a bit perturbed with the length of time our food took. However, appreciated the fact the restaurant comped our meal as a result. Overall, I thought the service here was very kind and the food was good enough to try again on a less busy day. read more

This "old school" Chinese restaurant is located in a strip mall. It maybe easy to miss if looking for it the first time. The inside is full of warm woods and Asian decor. We were seated quickly. Their menu is extensive, with everything from appetizers to main dishes. And some fairly authentic ones at that! The fried shrimp balls we ordered as an appetizer were very good and served steaming hot. My beef dish had ample amounts of fresh veggies mixed in with the beef. The prices are moderate and and the service efficient. Our servers were friendly and helpful with menu questions. If you're looking for Asian cuisine that goes beyond your 'fast food' Chinese then I definitely recommend giving Uncle Yip's a try. read more

If you are looking for authentic Chinese food in a cozy atmosphere, you can't beat Uncle Yip's! We went on a Sunday around 5:30. Staff were extremely attentive. We started with Jasmine tea. Aromatic and warming. I had the house special fried rice. Delicious and plentiful. Two people could split it. My husband had the Taiwanese style beef noodle soup. Unbelievably wonderful! The spices, maybe ginger, were just perfect. We have enough for dinner tomorrow. We split an order of pork buns. Soft with delicious sweet pork inside. Probably my favorite dish. The owner stopped by and chatted with us, which is a really special touch. They sent us home with complementary coconut/tapioca type pudding. We are from the Eastside, but Uncle Yip's is worth the trip! Don't miss out. read more

I'm a dim sum fan but have not tried to find it in Cincinnati since I moved from the West Coast a couple years ago. Enter Uncle Yip's Restaurant. Dim sum! Many different delicacies! Delivered on the classic carts! Hurray! We ordered many more dishes than two people should have and enjoyed ourselves. I definitely had har gow and shumai, and ---honestly I don't even remember because we tried so many things (and it was my daughter's first time having dim sum). Several servers made sure we had what we needed, at our table near the front window. All very good! The restaurant is nice but in a run down strip mall that really deserves an update (and badly needs new parking lot surfacing). Try not to let the outside deter you (this is difficult but persevere) - there is goodness in Uncle Yips waiting for you. read more

Used to come here a long time ago for dim sum. Decided to stop by and try. This Sunday had quite a few people. The carts were pushed around and I got the fried shrimp, fried smelt,l tendon, sticky rice, and bean curd. Typical dim sum fare. I was excited... but too soon. The extra priced smelt and shrimp were cold. They must have been on the cart for awhile. The food was overall really salty. One dish had nothing but pure soy sauce on it. I initially asked for water but never came until asking again mid way through meal. I puzzled it and had to wait awhile so I could ask for more. I would have ordered more but unfortunately the service leaves a lot to be desired. My bill came out to be around 41 dollars. Yeah I ate ate quite a bit. Not sure what I really think. It has changed a bit I feel. Again just too salty. So a 3 star (would eat and pay) to maybe try again on another day. read more

I hosted 8 friends at Uncle Yip's on Friday, for authentic Chinese food, and we had a fantastic time. They seated us at the round table with the giant glass lazy susan, which we played with pretty much all night (when each dish came my friends had to maneuver it to me first, so I could take pictures, then on to the person who ordered it -- I was calling it the "photo tax"). We discovered that they have new dine-in menus -- they are now thicker, with beautiful pictures of each dish, so customers know exactly what they're ordering. More than one person at the table said that they didn't know what to order:"I want all of them -- they all look so all amazing!!" And yes, they all were! My favorites around the table were the crab rangoon, the Kung Pao Chicken, authentic style (all dark meat, no vegetable, very spicy), the Spicy Sizzling Beef (my dish, which was amazingly tender!), and the Chicken Lo Mein. All together, still strongly strongly recommend, more than ever before, for great service, a beautiful setting, and fresh, authentic food!! read more

Overall a good experience. We were looking for a good Chinese food place in Cincinnati. It serves all day dim sum. The portions were mid range, family style. Pricing was reasonable. Service was slow, we had to find our waitress a couple of times. Very outdated decor but they had seating for large parties. The only issue that we ran into was that we ordered additional food and it seems to have been forgotten about. We tried to cancel it but they said it would be coming out in a couple mins even though it was more like 10. We took it to go. They also have sizzling plates that I would NOT recommend. We ordered and they told us it would be 90 minutes (and they were close to being right!). So we will go back when we have time to eat in when it's not crazy. We have been on a journey in the Chinese restaurant wilderness to find a replacement for Sunflower Chinese, the long time standard for straight up Cantonese/ Hong Kong dim sum in Columbus., now sadly closed. Alas. So having unsuccessfully scoured Columbus, (Tai's Asian Bistro so far the closest to the mark) we decided to try one of two seemingly good, well reviewed places in Cinci and made the trip. Where to start. The waitress/greeter was wonderful. I loved the old 1950's Italian chef cut out sign at the door. And they had a variety of oolong tea so incredible, I asked about it. The owner was out, it was bulk from china, so it remains a mystery. It was seriously heavenly and I drank of it deeply....especially because ...unfortunately, most of the dishes were on a scale from horrible to edible. We always check the sticky rice in lotus leaf, often called 5 treasure, as it's a favorite. I couldn't finish it. It was mostly just rice and bad tasting ground pork. No treasures. No flavor. At all. A few dishes either had no seasoning or so much salt it was inedible (and I like much more salt than most). We had cold steamed greens with no sauce. Later the cart came by with hot steamed greens with lots of sauce. The steamed buns with duck egg yolk inside? There was a slight, barely visible yellow smear inside. The dough horribly dense, cold and awful. Usually a favorite, but again, inedible. On and on, one bad dish after another. The salt and pepper squid legs were flavorful, but ice cold. Still, I ate them so as not to leave hungry. And the chive buns and shrimp covered crab claws were okay to eat, that was it from the huge variety of dishes we had. I'm mystified by some of the other reviews. Either their regular menu food is good or we were there on an off day, maybe? All was well in the though, as it was so bad after such having such high hopes and a long drive that we all found it really funny. And since I had just thrown away a chunk of money for nothing, I thought I would go next door and throw away more on the Japanese capsule toy machines. I got a little little plastic bird. Uncle Yip's is very nice inside, which was surprising given the state of the strip mall in which it sits. We were there today, Thursday, at noon. Business was steady, but it was nowhere near packed. We were there with friends and I didn't check in with them on their meals. One ordered Steam Shrimp Dumplings for the table. They were very good. The shrimp flavor was clean and the dumpling was tasty. I had the Ma Po Tofu. I saw a picture of it here on Yelp and I was sold before we even got to the restaurant. I noticed the meal had a chili pepper next to it on the menu, which gave me pause. I'm glad I ordered it anyway. It was not spicy, but still very flavorful. It did appear to have chili sauce in it, but again, it wasn't overly spicy by anyone's standards. The bowl was chock full of tofu. So much tofu! The nice thing about tofu is that it's not super filling. Even though it was a lot of food, I was the only one at the table that cleared my plate (bowl). Mark thought the General Tso's Chicken was okay. Service was good. The guy running the show did a good job of keeping up with everyone and everything. read more

I came here for dim sum and it was pretty good. I hate that I have to say this, but I am from Southern California and so the dim sum selection is very large and strong in Southern California. This is my second dim sum place in Cincinnati that I've tried and it was pretty good. We ordered a variety of things like shrimp shumai, eggplant, short ribs, and I ordered a few items off the dim sum menu and ordered from the regular menu. To be honest I was really excited to come here because this restaurant actually has honey walnut shrimp. I don't know if it's not a thing here in Ohio, but it's pretty common in California and I was kind of shocked that it was hard to find a Chinese restaurant that offered honey walnut and shrimp. It's such a good dish! Overall everything was good but nothing spectacular. The dim sum is good but again nothing crazy. I will though give this restaurant four stars for the Honey Walnut shrimp because 1) they actually offer the dish here and 2) It was very tasty. read more

Just making a trip to my favorite Japanese grocery in Cincinnati - I saw Uncle Yip's next door. I had tried this restaurant before when they were located in Fairfield. When you enter the restaurant you get an immediate impression of an establishment that wouldn't be out of place in Chinatown - carved chairs made of cherry wood - with and music playing in the background - in the adjacent dining room there was a large big screen television with the music video playing - the mood was definitely right - the service was great - I liked it that the proprietor welcomed me and reviewed the specials of the day - he seemed to know many of the patrons - always a sign of good hospitality when customers keep coming back - I started my lunch with the hot and sour soup - in a word amazing - light, sweet and perfectly balanced - not overwhelming - I wanted another bowl after the first sip - the potstickers were perfectly steamed and fried - the savory treat was definitely a great starter to my meal - the main course was the Village Pork Belly - not often on the menu so I decided to try it - I was very impressed with the balance of flavors and the spice level - perfect! If you want some traditional Chinese food - you need to make this your first stop - and come on a day when you want Dim Sum - if I had room in my stomach - I would have tried several offerings! read more

My family and I love Uncle Yip's! To me it is the best Chinese restaurant between Louisville, Lexington, and Cincinnati. When my family visits Cincinnati, from 90 miles away, we always try to plan around our purpose for the visit to make sure we can have their excellent dim sum or their wonderful dinner. Their menu contains many common favorites, but also things that are harder to find. Be sure to try their delicious house made chilli oil as an accent. The staff are kind and attentive. We drove up here from northern Ky because it had great reviews for dim sum. It was super quiet when we were in there but the servers were nice. Also ordered wonton beef noodle soup and kungpao chicken. Soup is ok but portion is small compared to other restaurants. Chicken is really disappointment. Best chow fun I've ever had, which is a big deal considering I'm from SoCal where there's a ton of authentic options! Dim sum is always a hit too, especially the siu Mai and rice noodle rolls. Their chili oil is fantastic, gai Lan is really flavorful and perfectly cooked, and moo goo gai pain is another one of our go tos. This has come up a few times as a place recommended, and finally I decided to go to cincy to try it. The place is located in the back of a strip mall, so a bit hard to see depending on which direction you are coming from. The restaurant itself seemed nice inside. I walked up to the register line and waited my turn, and they sat me and my daughter down. I recognized they spoke mandarin here, which is not important but just unusual for me as most places I go sprak mandarin. No impact to service or experience, just interesting side note for my felloe Chinese speakers! They had about 4 carts circling. We got a few things? Since it was just me and one toddler. I think each dish was about 5.99? And special dishes their own prices. I personally feel the carts were not steaming hot eligh, my food temp was just... meh. My lo mai gai .. the middle was.... cool and had pockets of something wet (like you get frozen thaws?). Nothing wowing when compared to TY Ginger in columbus. Their egg tarts? I really enjoyed those, crispy and flakey outer shell. Turnip cake was decent and their egg custard bao was great! My daughter loved the bao. Service was great! I cannot comment on service or ambiance as I've only gotten takeout from Uncle Yip's. Overall, I would rate them on the higher end of average for Chinese food in the Cincinnati area. They have a dry chili chicken which is one of my favorite Chinese dishes and is harder than I would expect to find in restaurants. They have a good spice level, particularly in the dry chili chicken dish. One of these days, we'll have to make it out there for dine-in, but in the meantime, we'll definitely still plan to get them for takeout Chinese and keep exploring their menu. read more

I'm happy that i finally discovered this place. The menu looks authentic Chinese, and although it's 40 mins drive from home, we think it worth the drive. The food is great. The Dim sum is not the best i have tasted in China, but it's much better than most of the Chinese restaurants. The soup dumpling is nice, filling taste good. The shirmp dumpling, the outside wrap is a little too thick, could make some improvement there. Turnip cake taste good, that's husband's favorite. I also had their chicken feet, yummy.
