Fast service and delicious food! The pancake had a hint of nutmeg/pumpkin AND they had homemade cinnamon syrup.

My only complaint is always crowded because of the great food ! Love the classic and the unique choices they offer. Service is excellent.

ULC makes the perfect diner breakfast for a chilly, foggy morning in Duluth. There are no reservations so you may have to wait a bit, but they move tables through pretty efficiently and I've never had to wait long to be seated. The breakfast classics are all great, but I especially enjoyed the gyros scramble - it was a tasty and unique take on breakfast. It isn't a fancy breakfast, but it is hearty and well executed. Service is a little chaotic at times and they can make you feel a little rushed, but I understand that they're just busy and trying to turn tables over. read more

I came here with a group of 7 on Sunday morning before a Vikings game was on. We were seated pretty quickly, I called and asked what the wait time would be and they said about 30 mins but we were seated in about 15. The booths are a little small, you can fit 4 people per booth. The food was great, typical no frills breakfast food at reasonable prices and portion sizes. Fun little cafe in downtown Duluth. We came right before closing and were able to get a table in the back but it was busy. Our server was very pleasant and straightforward, making sure to come back and check on us to see if we needed refills or anything. We got our food SO FAST it was very surprising considering there were so many people there. The food was very good and FILLING! Make sure to try the pancakes-they are huge and very delicious. Uncle Lou's Café is a retro place to visit if you like diner vibes, open kitchen and a 25+ year-old vintage experience in the heart of DULUTH! It is small so make sure you get there early to make sure you get a table as we got there and had to wait a few minutes for a table to open up. When you arrive, make sure that you order the coffee right off the bat as for diner coffee it is actually pretty good. And I'm telling you you must order the French toast! This place is like an old-school diner. You start your adventure by parking across the street in a very large parking lot. Then as you exit your car you will see the big green sign and a line lol. I asked the staff and there is always a line and in the summer time the line can go for blocks they say. The seating is a bit tricky because it's seat yourself. You wait in line and when you get to the front of the line you need to keep your eyes peeled for the next open spot that may fit your party or group. As soon as the group pays and stands up to leave you walk over to the table and wait. The service is very quick and they bus the tables at an incredibly fast rate and they do keep track of who leaves and who comes in. They have a system and it works I was surprised how efficient it is. When you walk in the doors the place looks very small in front and you spot some cool old school diner stools and a kitchen. The restaurant goes all the way back so you have to keep an eye out in the back too and just see who's leaving with coats or bags. We had 3 groups in front but it went fast and there were not many people camping out. The people that come here seem to mean business. They come to eat and not work on their memoirs or thesis so they eat and go. The staff were all very kind and friendly and coffee was at the table in a blink of an eye. The food came out very quickly and we were a little confused on how to pay. We were not sure if we had to go up front or wait at the table. We saw some people going up and some just waiting. Our server came up and took care of us. They had about 6 or 7 different types of hot sauce to choose from at the tables and lots of other options. The place is a little divvy but has many awards hanging on the wall and it's always packed so if you're not used to divvy-type places take into consideration that the place always has a line and it's packed. You can even watch the cooks make your food, unlike some places where the cooks are hidden in the back. I would recommend you at least stop here once and give ULC a try. read more

If you're looking for an old school diner with greasy food, ULC is your place. First come, first serve. There is usually a line out the door, but don't let that scare you - you usually will have a table within 15 min. This place can really only hold parties of 4 at a table. Great food. We had to drop off a relative at the hospital before 7 am and would be hanging around all day so decided to find a place for breakfast that was within walking distance. I used Yelp to find this place and thought we had hit the jackpot with an average 4 star review. Nope. Not even close. My husband always would say if it has the word "cafe" in the name it's going to be a good place to eat. He now say he cannot say that anymore. The 3 stars is an overview of everything but would use 2 stars for the breakfast food we ordered. The waitress we had was friendly and attentive. The food came out fast. There was ample seating in the front of the restaurant and the back was closed (lights off). I k ow this because the restrooms and kitchen are in between the dining rooms. My husband ordered pancakes and sausage. Pancakes were as big as your head. I asked my husband how they were and he wrinkled his nose and shook his head no. He had 3 sausage links of which I ate one. We both agreed they were't very good-almost over cooked/dry. There were 3 syrups on the table and the waitress pointed out that they were maple, blueberry and maple cinnamon. My husband said the maple and the maple cinnamon tasted the same but all 3 syrups were nothing special. I ordered the loaded hash-browns. My first taste was that they were greasy. If there was 1/2 slice of bacon in there it was hard to find. The hash-browns themself are the kind that come in a box dried and you put them in a bowl of water to reconstitute them. While I appreciate that they were crispy there was no "home cooking" going on here-not that they advertise it as such. They also serve lunch so unless I were to come back here more than once to give a few more dishes a rating I'll leave the 3 stars for now. read more

Pancakes were homemade, fluffy and about 10" round. Comes with a healthy glob of whipped butter melting down. Always order two and pay the price later. Go for three! I dare you. Three types of syrup on the table, packets of jam and an assortment of sauces. Come for the cakes. I think that's what they're popular for. Other food was ok. Coffee could be a bit more flavorful. I hate writing bad reviews but this place had such terrible service that I had to. Our server was just awful. She was rude from the beginning and has no business working in hospitality. We ordered a burger that bacon was not listed as an ingredient and when asked to have it remade she yelled across the restaurant (loud enough for everyone to hear)that the customer (us) ordered incorrectly. Very embarrassing. Maybe should have read through the bad reviews first because it seems to be a problem. She only returned to drop our check. We stopped here on a Sunday around 10am. We figured we couldn't get a spot, but luckily we found a spot at the bar area and our friends were able to sit at a nearby table. That was the only hard thing, is if you have a party of more than 4 people it was hard to sit together. The food was being pumped out quickly and the breakfast food is very good. Went to Uncle Loui's Cafe at 7:00am, even on a weekday this place was mediocre busy. Most tables were full and we sat at the nostalgic cafe style bar. The music played was old style 1950's rock and roll. It had that small town feel that is such amiss with most restaurant chains. I had the Loui's scrambler. It was amazing and more than filling for my 330lb body! Seriously FILLING!! Our waitress kept the coffee filled to the top and the cup never got below half full. She was as friendly as she could be considering she had a semi full house of people. This small breakfast joint was such a delight! Being that it was my first time visiting Duluth, I did not know what to expect. I came across Uncle Loui's Cafe and thought it was just a simple breakfast place in the area. Was I wrong! It was probably one of the best breakfast places I have ever been to! Their hash browns and fluffy French toast is everything to live for! The price was relatively cheap and definitely worth every penny! As for COVID guidelines, the space is pretty tight and while they do have plastic walls up for booths that are back to back, the place is a bit crowded. The servers wore masks, however they did have a sign that basically said dine yourself at your own risk (which applies for every place when dining in). If I take a trip to Duluth again, this is going to be in my itinerary! read more

This is a great place for breakfast but expect to WAIT! It would have been an easy 5-star but the wait time is brutal! Both to get in and to get your food. Looking at the size of the kitchen it is too small for the place. The place is clean and the wait staff is "spunky". The order was taken in a timely fashion as were the drinks delivered to the table. The refill guy was good as well but it was weird...he never topped off the glass? Never seen that before. Half cup of coffee refill...weird! However the glass never went empty. Maybe it is a covid19 or green thing? Great menu selection and you can order breakfast or lunch ANYTIME. I love these type of places, after all, you never know what you are hungry for? I order the chicken fried steak which was served hot and the serving size was HUGE! You certainly get plenty to eat here. Other people in our group reported pancakes had a different taste than normal cakes...not sure what that means I didn't taste them because they made the comment as we were leaving. Our table had run out of flavored creamer so I asked if we could get more caramel macchiato and she came back with a huge container and slammed it on the table and walked away. I dined here this morning after finding it on yelp. There was a line out the door which was a bit off-putting, because I was hungry and didn't want to wait. But, I talked myself into waiting. If there is this big of a line it has to be good. 30 minutes later, I make it inside and am seated at the "bar". About 5 minutes later my order is taken, I get coffee and water and when it comes, the people next to me leave. The bussing staff member came over and wiped off all of the counter area they were sitting at, where I was sitting, and the guy next to me. Which is fine, I know its clean. But then he grabbed my coffee, water, and silverware and took them too.... it was a bit comical when I tried to stop him. But by then, it was in his hands. I ordered the country fried steak, the breading was flakey and tasty. The gravy was pretty decent. My eggs were sunny side up, and the hash browns were just a tad underdone yet crisp on the outside, just how I like them. Was it worth a 30-35 minute wait? I'm not sure. Was it a good breakfast? This is a super friendly place!! Everything looks great. I got steak eggs, hash browns and French toast this was pretty good I tried all the sauces. This is a small restaurant. Waited outside in line as customers come out the employees quickly clean the tables and the next in line sits. It goes by very fast. Service was fabulous. I asked the female server her name and I have forgotten she was older with short hair and a great smile! She was quick efficient and friendly!! If your going to do separate checks please tell them before hand so it's easier for them to math it up correctly!! read more
