I had my Thanksgiving Dinner here. I've never eaten here before only drinks. I'm thankful I did the starter soup was delicious & the salad. Having stayed at this Sheraton (not this trip) before, we were expecting the same chop house menu, great drinks and superior service. WRONG The menu is small and weak! But the experience was terrible, too many better options. One of us ordered a Sea Breeze and got nothing of the such. We ordered a cheese platter and a meats board. But no crackers or anything of the such. Our waiter had a horrible attitude, not helpful at all and when one of our kids asked for help finding something on the menu or otherwise he liked. The waiter was irritated and all the answer to our questions were just NO. Nothing about our visit was good. So bummed as before the Covid this place was fantastic- won't be back and probably won't return to the hotel if they employ JERKS like our server. The hotel is beautiful and in great shape. This bar and restaurant is no different, it's very chic and beautiful. I wish I could say the same for the food. The service was great our waiter was friendly everything came in a timely manner, but my god that food was horrible. I hate to say, it's very rare that I have something negative to say but people should be aware before dining in where they are staying. We didn't want to go out so we decided to dine in the hotel because the menu looked appealing. The calamari was bland and looked like just microwaveable frozen goods. The crusted salmon was stale flavorless and the side of ratatouille was not what I had imaged (thinly sliced squash) this was like a diced up paste on a bed of white rice, it was just a very bland meal and for top dollar. We decided to stay at the Sheraton specifically since they had a restaurant in the hotel. Unfortunately the quality of food was far from stellar and needs a lot of help. Since we were there during the polar vortex, so dinner at the hotel was our only option. My Caesar salad looked as undesirable as it tasted. Lettuce was wilted, colored brown and was overdressed. Saving grace were the croutons as at least these tasted good, crunchy and salted. Salmon cakes at least had flavor. The next night we had no other option but to eat there again. Decided to try the ravioli and another wrong choice. Ravioli was frozen inside and out. The inside cheese was still frozen and the pasta was not al dente but frozen. A few years back, a newly built luxe hotel went up in Duluth, a mid-rise Sheraton at the eastern end of downtown. It's across 3rd Avenue from the former Hotel Duluth, which opened with 500 rooms in 1925. The lobby and dining rooms were very ornate, heavily decorated in a Moorish style. While Duluth has many nice inns that fall into the "tourist motel" category, and some spiffy B&Bs in the city's finer old homes, the city really needed a hotel of this nature, and a dining experience to match, which it has in the first floor eatery Restaurant 301, named after the street address of the hotel. The dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has an attached lounge. The cuisine is locavore-American with a continental touch, courtesy of Executive Chef Kevin Ilenda. In addition to the standard offerings, Ilenda frequently treats Duluthians and visitors to special theme meals with wine pairings. He has culinary skills and creativity not often witnessed in the Zenith City. Our Friday burger outing stopped at the 301 and smiles were around the table. The table shared an appetizer of Warm Blue Cheese with Pear and Walnut Glazed with Honey in a Fresh Baked Tartlet. The burger is ground in-house daily, mixed with pork, topped with cured bacon, baby Swiss, and house-made barbecue sauce; like other sandwiches, it is served on focaccia. Chicken sandwiches, with house-made chips were described as moist and flavorful, as was the turkey club. We finished our repast with an off the menu dessert that Ilenda proferred, a take-off on s'mores, prepared table side. Dark wood paneled walls, with a crackling fireplace make for a comfortable experience during the day, and the potential for a romantic tryst in the evenings. We didn't have anywhere to go for Thanksgiving, and we saw this place was serving Thanksgiving food. So we made a reservation and went. First of all - despite all the signs asking people to mask and keep 6 feet apart - we were seated directly in between two other couples, not a foot apart from each other despite most of the room being empty. It felt like the six of us were at one table together. Now, it worked out for us as we are vaccinated and we actually hit it off with one couple sitting beside us, but this would have been a uncomfortable situation many others. If you really want us to stick to covid guidelines - please follow them yourself. Next, for a holiday centered around eating a lot of food, the portions were ok at best and you didn't get any extras. And for what we paid per person, the food was quite mediocre. The squash soup starter was good, but you can find better at Panera. The quinoa salad was the best of the meal - it was a very good salad. But it came with greens that had brown spots all over. The main dishes: potatoes were fine, gravy was ok, cranberries were ok, stuffing was not great, and the snap peas were very good. My husband said the turkey was pretty good. The apple pie was dry and not super flavorful. Everyone raved about the vanilla ice cream though. Honestly, for an expensive meal, I expected better. However, the staff was very kind. I truly felt bad they had to work the holiday and they were so nice even still. They were great! read more

I was extremely excited to try out a new restaurant in Duluth. Myself and 5 others went to Restaurant 301 for New Years Eve dinner. When we first sat down we noticed that we were handed a menu with five courses, and it was $65 (quite a bit more than any of us were planning on spending that night). This is part of the reason they lost a star from me as we had made reservations ahead of time, and no one was notified that they had a special menu for the night. We probably would have gone elsewhere if we would have know. But being that it was New Years Eve we figured that every other restaurant would be busy and since we had a group of 6 it would probably be hard to get in anywhere else on such late notice. So we bit the bullet and decided to stay. Our waitress was very nice and accommodating. As we didn't realize their was a set menu much of it was seafood, which I love, but a friend that was with was pregnant and can't eat seafood as it doesn't sit well. So thankfully the waitress understood and did everything she could to substitute non seafood items for our friend. Each course was good. However another reason why they lost a star; good but nothing was excellent. Beet salad was fine: not a big fan of beets, so it would have been nice to have another salad option. The lobster bisque was good, however there was no lobster in it. It was just a lobster broth. Again good but not even close to some amazing lobster bisques I have had at other restaurants. The best course was the scallop. It was prepared perfectly and with beautiful presentation. I had monkfish for my main course with lobster risotto. The risotto was better than the fish, but both were lacking in flavor. I would still recommend 301, and would be willing to go back and try it again to order off of their everyday menu. I would probably not go back again for a mandatory five course meal though. read more

This restaurant deserves at least a solid 4 stars. I have eaten here 2 evenings in a row. The quality of the food has been perfect. I have had the blueberry, mandarin orange and jicama salad twice, and those were filled with extremely fresh ingredients. It was delicious, hence the reason I ordered it both evenings. I also had the curry seafood stew which was pleasantly flavourful, and no skimping on the seafood. I ordered the soup du hour which was salmon/wild rice. It wasn't quite hot enough for my liking but it was very tasty. The presentation on all dishes was very good. read more

Jodi made the reservation here for our date night on June 22nd, 2013, and what a great restaurant to visit! The whole time we were there, we were the only ones there, which was sad. Between the chef's skills and his tasty menu, this place should be filled every night. The setting was very romantic: white table tablecloth, linen napkins, candle, flowers, and nice dinnerware. The menu is made up of different ingredient combinations that work so well that it is the most unique menu we have tasted on the Northland. Our waitress, Sara Jean, was very helpful, kind, and knowledgable of the menu items. Restaurant 301 provides their menu on their website, so we knew what we would order when we got there, but it was still hard to choose. They brought us out a basket of bread with lemon balsamic butter. It was different: lemony, but so good. Brian ordered two glasses of wine. He likes a more fruity taste. Our waitress, Sara Jean, suggested a red and a white wine, Marietta red old vine California lot 58 and Discoveries moscato California 2010. They were both very good: great aroma and accents. We both ordered appetizers, so that we could try a little bit of everything, because everything sounded delicious. Jodi ordered the Beef Tenderloin Crustini, it had Cave-Aged Blue Cheese, Toasted BBQ Sauce, and Scallions. She said it was really good. The only thing that was different about it was the dollop of blue cheese. It seemed overpowering and out of place, but the other tastes worked together. Brian ordered the Spring Cheese Plate that came with Goat Cheese with Strawberry and Black Pepper Compote (which, in French, means "mixture" that is a dessert made of whole, or pieces, of fruit in sugar syrup). Manchango (which is cheese made from sheep's milk) with Greek Olives, Warm Brie with Smoked Almonds. I really liked this appetizer a lot, the goat cheese and strawberries was my favorite. As a cheese fan, I would order this again and would recommend this starter. For our entrees, Jodi ordered the Spring Bone-in-Lamb made with Butter Basted Domestic Lamb, Chocolate & Red Chili Veal Glace, Pan Fried Ricotta Polenta, Fava Beans & Tricolored Baby Carrots. She was concerned that the chili would be too spicy. Our waitress, Sara Jean, said that the chocolate will offset the chili heat, and she confirmed with Chef Kevin llenda it would be more on the sweeter side than heat. It was sweet. You couldn't taste the chili heat. The combinations worked very well. Brian ordered the Yellow Curry Seafood Stew made with Coconut Shrimp Broth, Calamari, Shrimp, Scallop, Blue Crab, Mussel, Tomato, Scallion, Fresno Chili, and Cilantro. What more could I ask for? It has the seafood that I like, and I enjoy a good curry dish (oh, yes, I asked if I could have extra curry). The dish tasted so good! Everything was done perfectly, and the stew was seasoned very well. I really enjoyed the whole calamari! I never had them this way; they're usually fried and over done. The portion size was spot on with a nice balance of seafood and Coconut Shrimp Broth. We then ordered dessert. Jodi ordered the Trio Of House Made Cakes, which included Ginger Carrot Cake, Red Velvet, and Chocolate Fresno. She said they were delicious, but the Chocolate Fresno was a bit of a surprise. It was a good start of chocolat, but then, when you swallow, the spice hits the back of the throat. Her favorite cake was the Ginger Carrot Cake, the touch of ginger and the pineapple really made the flavors pop, but it blended very well together. Brian ordered the Green Tea Cre'me Brûlée, the caramelization was beautiful, not over burnt, and had a nice crisp when breaking into it. The green tea custard base tasted amazing, the green tea was not overpowering or too strong, but it was smooth and creamy. This dessert was a perfect way to end a great meal and just makes you want more on a nice warm day. Another reason we liked Restaurant 301 was that our waitress Sara Jean didn't rush for us to order our next choice. She let us get to where we were about done, then she asked. It was a smooth, flowing experience. Sara Jean would refill our drinks when they were low often and bring out clean plates, and silverware when we got another fresh basket of bread. We also got word that Chef Kevin Ilenda changes his menu with fresh flavors and ingrediants according to the season and local flavors, so keep on eye out on their website for the current menu. Restaurant 301 is a must to STOP IN, whether staying at the Sheraton Hotel, shopping in Duluth, or, if you work in downtown Duluth, you can call for a free complimentary ride on your lunch break. When you're done, they will bring you back. If you are looking for a place to bring your loved one, Restaurant 301 is the place to be, from the atmosphere and kind staff to Chef Kevin llenda, who has passion for Duluth, MN, and his menu. Sat down for breakfast this morning ordered an English muffin and a couple of eggs. Over 20 minutes later we were still waiting. My wife had water. I did not even have that. When the waitress approached to fill my wife's water glass I asked her where our food was. "Oh,"she said "we're very busy." There were three other couples in the restaurant. We decided to head out to Restaurant 301 for the "Eat Downtown Restaurant Week." It turns out, that was an excellent decision. I arrived a bit early, so I took a seat in the waiting area until the rest of my group arrived. The seats in the waiting area were very plush and comfortable. They had a nice warm fire going in the fireplace, which was a nice touch after coming in from the chilly mix of rain and snow coming down outside. As my group arrived, we were seated right away. Restaurant 301 has a nice overall atmosphere and comfortable chairs. The service was great. For a starter, I had the Arcadian blend greens, heirloom cherry tomatoes, English cucumbers, roasted asparagus, herbed focaccia, croutons, lemon basil vinaigrette. The salad was great. It contained quite a variety of fresh and flavorful ingredients. For my entreé, I ordered the Stuffed Turkey Breast: Free-range organic cutlet stuffed with herbed wild rice, asparagus, and Boursin cheese, with whipped potatoes and yams, sautéed chef vegetables (carrots and asparagus), and brie chive cream sauce. The whipped potatoes and yams were excellent. Great presentation and good flavor throughout the entree. For dessert, I picked the Apple Strudel:Granny Smith apples, golden raisins, pecans, puff pastry, vanilla bean ice cream, caramel sauce. This dessert was very tasty and once again, the presentation was spot on. It was a great way to top off an excellent meal! It was so good, I almost considered ordering a 2nd dessert... but, I guess I'll just have to wait until the next time I dine at the 301. read more

After my 2nd trip to Duluth and 2nd time eating here, I had to leave this place a glowing review. I was pleasantly surprised to find something like merguez sausage on the menu and it was prepared well with an excellent sauce. The bread comes with a balsamic butter which was amazing and the presentation was fabulous. Service is also fantastic, everyone is warm and helpful. I have eaten at several restaurants in this area including the historic spot down the street but this is definitely the best around. Hotel is the best too. Will be back. read more

This is one of the few breakfast places in duluth. It's in a very convenient location and has a very calm and comforting atmosphere. We enjoyed our breakfast which was beautifully presented. The food is high quality and reasonably priced. The service was great, the servers make you feel welcomed and at ease. We Went here to grab a quick breakfast. It wasn't very good mostly due to service. The selection was limited and uncreative. The coffee had been sitting in the pot for too long and tasted stale. I had two eggs over medium and oatmeal. They were obviously under the heat lamp for too long and had congealed. The eggs were like rubber. Just wanted to let you know that although our food was really good the time it took to get our meals was ridicules. With 2 of the servings being a salad and dessert I would have expected not to be at dinner for close to 2 hours. I will find it hard for myself to come and dine again at your restaurant. 301 also offers dinner. Expensive dinner with frozen food quality. The ravioli was alternatively soggy or pre-aldente (crunchy). Too bad the croutons in the Ceasar salad were not the same. They must have come from a bag opened sometime last year as they offered zero crunch and were picked out. The salmon was soggy and the pilaf it sat on was crunchy. The beef filet was ordered medium but came fully well done. It was a decent piece of meat though. The half chicken was reported as good. Save your money or splurge somewhere else. read more

We were excited to celebrate our special occasion here. The restaurant was very quiet in our dining room, but we could not have had better service! Our expectations were high, and we were not disappointed. Our newlywed couple were doted on, and sufficiently spoiled. We had a little of a lot on the menu and had some great meals. The steak- eaters in our small party had their meat nicely cooked, the wine and champagne were tasty and the green tea brûlée was a tasty treat. We would dine here again. read more

I spent some time reviewing restaurants before deciding to go to Restaurant 301 for New Years Eve. We arrived to find they had a special New Years Eve menu. As splendid as the menu looked, It was filled with items which I do not eat. I had chosen the restaurant after I had viewed the online menu. Unfortunately, I had not realized the event page had the special menu posted. The waitress quickly brought the manager over and within minutes the kitchen was preparing a chicken breast. When the food arrived it was delicious. The cook spontaneously improvised and created a beautifully colorful dish for me. The chicken was grilled to perfection, the vegetables were fresh and cooked beautifully. The cook captured the natural flavors. I can't thank them enough. A beautiful restaurant with great ambiance. Kind and friendly staff. Very accommodating. We defininitly will go back! read more

"Raw fish for expensive prices in a small, uninteresting environment. " That's my tag line that sums up our experience. I forgot "served by bored college students." There are 2 deal breakers for any restaurant. It doesn't matter where/what that restaurant is. 1) raw meat/fish, and 2) foreign objects in the food. Restaurant 301 broke the first one. Never give a customer raw meat. Never. This speaks to a fundamental of a kitchen staff that guarantees that I'll never eat at a place again. Instead of apologizing for the food, the manager's reply was that "there was a banquet they were trying to do" at the time. Well, give us our $125 back, and then maybe we'll consider coming when you're not too busy. read more

We celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary there on June 18th. The food was very good, excellent in fact. We had very good service and our waitress, Olivia, was very nice, told us Happy Anniversary and was very knowledgeable about the dishes we ate. The cheese and strawberry appetizer was wonderful.
