Stopped in for a coffee on a Friday morning at the recommendation of a nearby business owner and I was not disappointed! The space itself is HUGE with tons of seating - I was in shock. My friend described the coziness of it as "your grandma's house". We got in line right in time because it filled up right after we ordered. They have tons of coffee and tea options as well as baked goods and hot food of the day items (quiche, frittata, etc). They also do beer and wine and had a solid tap selection. I had the dovetail latte and my friend had an iced vanilla latte and we both loved our coffees. They also have a small craft and trinket section from local sellers which was so cool and made the space feel so homey. It was so good we ended up doing back later that weekend as well. This is truly one of my favorite coffee shops that I always make sure to visit when in Duluth. The space is bright and open with local artwork and crafts displayed. The highlight is their lattes, especially the almond latte. They use high quality organic syrups and it makes such a big difference in the flavor. read more

What a unique place! Being part of the Duluth Folk School meant there's also a "market" inside with handmade goods in addition to the cafe food and beverages. I definitely felt like it had a cool, community-based vibe with all kinds of people there and all kinds of seating. The way it works is to order up at the counter and they call out your name when your drink is ready. For food, you get a number to put on your table and they deliver it to you. I got the quiche and a maple latte, both of which I enjoyed very much. They had some other unique menu options that sounded like they're updated/rotated regularly. Prices were a little higher than I was expecting but I think the cafe helps provide income for the school so if that's true then at least it's to a good cause. read more

The most delicious coffee and breakfast! I stopped in on a Friday morning and ordered the quiche of the day and a latte with their homemade maple and vanilla syrup. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. The staff were super friendly and it did not take long at all for our food and drink to come out. Lovely atmosphere, a lot of seating, great coffee and food options. It's probably one of the largest coffee shops I've been to. It had different areas with different vibes but overall is very open and well designed. The coffee options seem to be of high quality and the food health conscious. My only complaint is their patio customer service. I had to ask two times for a glass to fill up my own water and each time they pointed out that all their glasses were dirty and needed washing. The second time they questioned if I was really thirsty and needed water right away. I said I was thirsty so they reluctantly gave me a plastic to go cup. I understand they are probably trying to avoid using plastic but I waited quite a while and was truly thirsty. Their attitudes just seemed a bit snobbish and like they didn't want to be bothered. Other than that the food was good but not cheap and the late I got was pretty good. I'd give them another try because it's such a unique place. read more

Best mac and cheese of my entire life. I will be dreaming of this creamy, dreamy concoction everyday for, well, forever probably. It was that good. Pasta was kinda mushy but that's how I like it. The sauce was velvety. The mixed green side salad and it's tangy vinaigrette were the perfect accompaniment. The register is adorned on either side with fresh baked goods: cookies, brownies, rice krispie treats, etc. How could I say no to such tempting baked goods? So obviously I had to buy three: a breakfast cookie, a ginger cookie, and a browned butter chocolate chip cookie. I am saving them for the 11 hour drive back to Missouri tomorrow and that makes the idea more bearable. They also offered alcohol, cafe style drinks, and a beautiful sounding quiche of the day. One of my favorite things to order is the Chai Tea Latte and their Pumpkin Bread. The atmosphere of Dovetail is also why it keeps me coming back. They provide a rustic and friendly atmosphere. They provide free books to read and free games to play. Along with crafts and artwork that is available to buy. One of my favorite things at Dovetail is the large windows. The vibe of this spot is absolutely on point. There are lots of table, lots of local art, and lots of windows. A super nice spot to grab a coffee and get some work done. You order at the counter and get a number and then find a table and they bring out your food. You are responsible to bus your own table. I got a bowl with eggs, rice, pickled onions, cheese and tortilla chips and some friends got the breakfast sandwich. Both were quite good. During a brief visit to the Duluth, we managed to make two stops into the Dovetail Café. The quiche was excellent, but the Traverse sandwich was heavenly! One of us had it with the peppers and found it quite spicy. I had mine without the peppers and it was absolutely mouthwatering. Also all the things that have already been said in other reviews about the ambience, the free games, the books and the friendly staff. Dovetail is an awesome spot in Duluth. It's quaint and homey but also fun and young. It's also the best spot in town to get vegan brunch food. We got a vegan orange cardamom scone ($3.75) and loved its moistness and subtle sweetness. This was well done. Flavors change daily. The Toast 3 Ways is customizable and can be vegan. We got it with avocado mash ($7) and enjoyed the freshness of the homemade bread (they make their own bread!) and the zest of the tahini drizzle. The Vegan Valhalla breakfast sandwich ($10) is a winner: it's hefty, with a superb bagel, and fresh vegetables. We also loved the seasoning on the tofu patty. As an aside, it was great to see the cooked tofu, rather than someone just microwaving a Just Egg patty. The service is friendly and they have a few sidewalk tables. Every time I come to this place I love it more. The service is fantastic. The food is delicious. And the coffee is just the best! And how can you not love sitting in the little log cabin or by the big front windows? The entire place just has a great feel to it. What a great find in Duluth! I was driving back from the North Shore, and needed to stop at the halfway point for a quick bite. Delicious bacon apple grilled cheese & tomato basil soup. Coffee was great! Cafe service was friendly and speedy. The cafe has such a great ambiance - a spot for friends & family to meet up & for people to work/read/write. We were waiting for a bike repair from Twin Cities Cyclery (which I highly recommend) and found this gem Great renovation of an older building into an emporium of shops upstairs and open dining downstairs. The food at the cafe keeps you there. Gluten free quiche was perfectly cooked and served with some greens which had just enough dressing on them with a slightly tangy mustard dressing. Cardamom latte to go with a blueberry cake of some sort. My husband had the non gluten free quiche and fresh brewed coffee. Mixed feelings: I liked the veggie breakfast bowl, made with black beans, sweet potatoes and quinoa, with a hummus-like sauce (the menu says it's a tofu sauce and it's quite good). Less successful was the veggie banh mi sandwich, which wasn't like any banh mi that I've had, and not unique in a good way. Not bad, but not good, either. Having cucumber & mushroom as the base doesn't work well. The sauce didn't tie the whole sandwich together. I've had much better from Hard Times or Num-mi in the Twin Cities. The unusual part of the day was that it was quiet when we arrived. Then, it got very loud, with a strange and sudden mass influx of 30-somethings with their young children. The adults coming in seemed either sleep deprived or just out of it, oblivious of other people leaving. Out of our element, not our scene, time to go, can't quite go, dodge the glassy-eyed person. This unique cafe expeirence is unlike any I have ever visited! They have a full menu that is decorated with scrumptious sandwiches, salads, soups, and appetizers made in a full kitchen. Breakfast is served all day which is a god send in Duluth! If you come on the weekends, breakfast specials are usually offered. Lately, the Northern Waters Sausage Biscuits and Gravy have been the special which is to die for! Tastes like true southern comfort food! The pricing is lower then expected so everyone can afford it. The baked goods are always baked fresh, in house and are constantly different everytime I come in. Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, Raspberry Morning Buns, Cinnamon Chocolate Babka, you name it! And there are numerous vegan and gluten free options for bakery items and menu items. A rotating beer menu that features local microbreweries as well as some microbreweries from other parts of the country. What a nice change of pace. The coffee is Almanac Coffee which is all roasted in house (literally across the hall from where it is brewed and sold). This coffee is micro lots and is sourced with communication with the growers. The Ethiopian they were serving is a naturally processed coffee with delicious notes of blueberry and lemon! Had to take home a bag! The building operates in unison with the Duluth Folk School so often, many "made by hand" classes or demonstrations from local artisans are happening which is fun to observe. Classes can be taken by anyone online. Musicians often play here as well who are typically folk artists. The atmosphere is relaxed, authentic, and truly a community place where people can connect and get together. The log cabin made with dovetail joints is a staple of the facility. Which is nice and cozy to sit in. Local artisans also rent space upstairs which are used as studios such as Duluth Kombucha and Sew Duluth. The kitchen, facility and a classroom are able to be rented out by anyone who requests so for private events. The staff here are cheerful, friendly, gifted and talented! Really can't say enough about the owners and staff here. Everyone is very involved and seem passionate about where they work. One staff member told me they don't feel like they are working, just having fun. The kitchen staff also are very welcoming to suggestions! Dovetail Cafe and Marketplace and Duluth Folk School is a one of a kind community place that welcomes everyone to come get involved or at the very least enjoy what they have to offer. My friends and I stopped here for a coffee since we were waiting for our brunch time. The staff were friendly and the environment was one of a buzzing coffee shop. My lavender latte smelled like soy sauce, but tasted normal. My friends really enjoyed their tea and chai latte.
