This unique cafe expeirence is unlike any I have ever visited! They have a full menu that is decorated with scrumptious sandwiches, salads, soups, and appetizers made in a full kitchen. Breakfast is served all day which is a god send in Duluth! If you come on the weekends, breakfast specials are usually offered. Lately, the Northern Waters Sausage Biscuits and Gravy have been the special which is to die for! Tastes like true southern comfort food! The pricing is lower then expected so everyone can afford it. The baked goods are always baked fresh, in house and are constantly different everytime I come in. Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, Raspberry Morning Buns, Cinnamon Chocolate Babka, you name it! And there are numerous vegan and gluten free options for bakery items and menu items. A rotating beer menu that features local microbreweries as well as some microbreweries from other parts of the country. What a nice change of pace. The coffee is Almanac Coffee which is all roasted in house (literally across the hall from where it is brewed and sold). This coffee is micro lots and is sourced with communication with the growers. The Ethiopian they were serving is a naturally processed coffee with delicious notes of blueberry and lemon! Had to take home a bag! The building operates in unison with the Duluth Folk School so often, many "made by hand" classes or demonstrations from local artisans are happening which is fun to observe. Classes can be taken by anyone online. Musicians often play here as well who are typically folk artists. The atmosphere is relaxed, authentic, and truly a community place where people can connect and get together. The log cabin made with dovetail joints is a staple of the facility. Which is nice and cozy to sit in. Local artisans also rent space upstairs which are used as studios such as Duluth Kombucha and Sew Duluth. The kitchen, facility and a classroom are able to be rented out by anyone who requests so for private events. The staff here are cheerful, friendly, gifted and talented! Really can't say enough about the owners and staff here. Everyone is very involved and seem passionate about where they work. One staff member told me they don't feel like they are working, just having fun. The kitchen staff also are very welcoming to suggestions! Very cute cafe that offers your standard coffee and teas, along with some bakery items and freshly made breakfast/ sandwich options. My friends and I stopped here for a coffee since we were waiting for our brunch time. The staff were friendly and the environment was one of a buzzing coffee shop. My lavender latte smelled like soy sauce, but tasted normal. My friends really enjoyed their tea and chai latte. They also have an area were local artists and crafters can sell their art and collections. It was fun to browse around and see the local art scene. This is the new must go to spot now for our Duluth trips. The morning menu has something for everyone in our group. Lots of plant based and vegan options that all tasted amazing. Love a local coffee house! Almanac coffe which appears to be roasted in house is super bold with a great strong taste. I had the quiche. The eggs where perfect and the crust was flakey. Looking at the food menu, it's good sized with lots of options. Few enough you know your foods fresh and hasn't been sitting all day. Large Vegan/GF selection. The menu does state that cross contamination may happen. The atmosphere here is amazing. Buzzing with activities and people laughing. Very noticeable the workers are having a good time. I was looking for a place to study and came across this cute cafe. The vibe is nice and the cashier was very friendly. I was hungry and decided to order the Thai peanut salad (a cold salad). The noodles were hard and the sauce was not very good. I'm not sure if I would come back for the food but a place to chat and have coffee yes. read more

OMG better than I had imagined!!!! Came here for my birthday lunch with a couple wild kiddos in tow. Had a yum yum cup of cream of cauliflower soup (I don't even like cauliflower but it was amazing!), a bacon apple panini, a cardamom sticky roll, and swilled down with a cold glass of blueberry kombucha fresh off the tap. Absolutely spoiled. The space in the folk school is simultaneously large and cozy with great lighting and a crowd that is welcoming, multigenerational, and a little funky. The upcoming classes were listed and I so wish I could do them all: snowshoe weaving, timberframe skillshop, a folk dance and music night...it's like everything you want in one place. So much care and attention and creativity was put into each aspect of the place from the aesthetics, to the food, to the wide variety of area artisan's wares. They also have music many nights, and local art shows that rotate on a regular basis. Dovetail is a great little cafe and coffee shop. It's warm and cozy and a very comfortable place to stay a while and get work done or chat with friends. I've tried the pesto, egg, and chèvre breakfast sandwich twice - messy but very tasty. I've also had the spicy black bean bowl once, which was very flavorful. Currently I am in that post-grad anxiety ridden furiously job-searching phase of life and Dovetail cafe has proven to be a haven to work on job applications and contemplate my next steps in life. They have AMAZING CHAI. Which doesn't happen that often when you prefer your chai on the spicy side like me. I have eaten here a few times and my favorite was a sandwich with bacon and apples which I loved because I'm all about that salty/sweet situation. Pictured here is their potato soup with ham which was also very yummy. I was also here when I found out I did not get a job that I really wanted and a staff person asked if I was doing okay when I had tears in my eyes. I greatly appreciated their kindness even though I am not sure now if they were asking about my feelings or if I just wanted a refill on my coffee ‍ Anyways it is the hot place to be in Duluth at the moment and is definitely worth checking out. read more

My husband and I stopped in on our drive through Duluth to get hot tea and coffee to go. We decided to get a chocolate chip cookie, which we were told baked fresh that morning, along with all the delicious baked goods in the case. I bake amazing chocolate chip cookies myself and this was hands down the best chocolate cookie I've ever had. Just the right combination of crunchy and chewy and sweet and salty.
