In a town full of Mexican restaurants, Uncle Julio's is a solid "meh." The appetizers were fine (but expensive), and they no longer do the table-side guacamole (because Covid, everything no one wants to do anymore is "because Covid," I guess). The drinks were fantastic, but you'd better not top up your gas tank, because . . . dang . . . I managed to order a $26 dollar margarita. In a highball glass. Wut. That extra shot of Patron was 12 bucks. Food was fine. A solid 4/10. Honestly, the best thing I had was probably the Kahlúa -infused whipped cream on the chocolate piñata ($30!), which is totally worth it because: wooden bat, chocolate hanging ball, beating your dessert with a bat, chocolate and marshmallow sauce, fruit, and beating your dessert with a bat. On the way home last night, we drove toward Raisin Canes for my son. My wife and I wanted something else and decided to stop in Uncle Julio's instead, for the first time. As we walked in, two hostesses seemed unaware that we were interested in a table at first, but eventually showed us to one. We sat at our table for nearly 10 minutes prior to an apologetic server approaching with lightly salted chips and an intriguing--albeit bland--salsa, of some sort. She took drink and appetizer orders, returning shortly with drinks. Our appetizer--Veggie Quesadillas--was fresh, hot, and decent, even though it arrived at our table 40 minutes after we did. The menu prices seemed somewhat ridiculous at first, like $14 guacamole and such. There were less expensive items there, but some definite sticker shock. Our server took our order prior to arrival of the appetizer. She was sweet, but seemed distracted and literally profusely apologetic at every exchange, over nothing. It was odd, for sure. I ordered beef and chicken fajitas and my wife had a chicken fajita bowl. Fajitas arrived sizzling, but without tortillas. Our server said she'd be right back with tortillas, then stopped and chatted with another table long enough for the sizzle to die down. I started eating beans and rice, which excellently confirmed I had not lost my senses. I'm torn here, because the rest of the food was obviously prepared from scratch and cooked to perfection; however, a lack of seasoning made it undeniably flavorless. At one point, I joked that I needed to take a COVID test in case I'd lost my smell and taste again. When the tortillas arrived, I had eaten about half of my fajitas already, and was disappointed enough that I simply stacked my plates up and asked for the bill, which was a bit high for an average meal, but very high for a disappointing one. On our way out of town, we stopped at Canes for my son (who was at home waiting). I laughed that next time I wanted good Tex-mex food I would just come straight to Canes, where I was sure to find better seasoning in the end. All in all, it wasn't a horrible experience, but was incredibly disappointing. I almost went with two stars, but with so many great options like Abuelo's, Picoso's, and Aranda's, I won't return to Uncle Julio's. Charismatically charged, an unequivocally eager manager accompanied by his sunny hostess sidekick immediately greeted us & I felt resuscitation for me would ensue because an unprecedented occurrence followed... Au courant Mexican spot in Lubbock & got seated stat & even inquired if a high top was preferable?! Mid swoon, mega, ornate wrought iron futures, stain glass fixtures & mustardy stuccoed walls distracted & we were show to a lovely dark wood high top in the bar. Elegant yet grandma's Cocina cozy ambience equates to a lovely & welcoming enviro! Our waitress popped in peppy & prompt with chips, salsa & drinks! Chips were hot, fresh, thin & crisp & the fire roasted salsa introduced a smoky, moderate, fresh flavor & their grapefruit marg is a perfect refreshing accompaniment & utilizes St. Germain's in addition to top shelf tequila which gives it a sweeter flavor closer to a saucy, spiked lemonade!!! Steak fajitas arrived steaming & were noteworthy as the steak was fork tender, sumptuous, cooked medium & lovely taste with a wee twinge of soy? (Interestingly different but, delish all the same!) Standard fajita accompaniments were included & the stand outs were the charro beans which were just right with their own mix of spices & slightly reminiscent of black eyed peas as they were smaller that standard pinto beans. The rice was no ribbon winner as it was good but, no flavors which upscaled this side. The flour tortillas were ethereal circlets from celestial origin with doughy yet light taste with dusting of pixie dust from some familial kitchen fairy obviously!!!!! Next go round, I shall bring at least 3 fun foodies to indulge in the captivating chocolate piñata broken table top by the guest, filled with a Fantasia of fresh fruit, churros & clouds of whipped cream covering the tray!!!!! Very Disappointed! Easily the worst dining experience I've had in my seven years as a Lubbock resident. We didn't have a long wait for a party of two but we were called up to the hostess podium and then made to wait at the podium for another 5 minutes. The hostess mumbled and wasn't friendly, and didn't communicate the additional wait or apologize. We then were seated and waited for ten minutes before a wait staff member took our drink orders or even greeted us. The restaurant was hot as the AC initially wasn't turned on in the end of May. We received our waters in dirty cups and when my Dr. Pepper arrived it was clear and missing any syrup mix. It was rectified but we were given two straws in beat up wrappers to boot. The queso was good but the portion was very small for the price and a good portion of the chips were crumbs. After over 30 minutes waiting for our entrees we were notified by a separate staff member that the kitchen didn't have our order and we had to reorder everything. We weren't given drink refills in over 45 minutes and still no entrees. The lighting was extremely dark (even one of the wait staff mentioned they couldn't see very well) and my wife and I on our date night were sat in a small dining area next to two tables of 10 people (extremely loud and unable to even have a conversation at our table over their volume). The entrees finally arrived at 50 minutes after being seated. I ordered fajitas and was brought no tortillas initially (they were brought out shortly after, so not a major deal just par for the course). The portions and quality were extremely disappointing. I had fajitas that were way too salty and lacking any other flavor besides salt. My wife had the cheese and onion enchiladas that she said tasted like Wolf Brand Chili just dumped on enchiladas our 10 year old son could make. The cost for this underwhelming experience was just shy under $50 for two with no alcohol or desserts, just two entrees with a small queso. Only compliments I have were about the side of beans (decent flavor) and they did give ample amount of tortillas for the fajitas (rare for most places that serve fajitas, so I was pleased with that). In summary, there are so many other better Mexican food options in Lubbock that won't cost as much and you'll receive much better service. No manager came by our table for us to express our disappointment, so I had to share my experience here. Won't be coming back unfortunately. read more

Polite service, however presentation is poor and it is overpriced. The chips are wafer thin. We were served a shrimp appetizer dish which appeared unfinished without a garnish. The shrimp were small and dry. The taste was unremarkable. Abuelo's has a similar dish, with large shrimp, great taste, and nice presentation. $5 bottles beer. No beer taps. No music in the bar area affected the atmosphere. They do not have TAJIN, which is an essential at a Mexican restaurant. read more

The service was top-notch, the food was good, but expensive. The problem was the noise. At first I thought it was a noisy ventilation system, but there was a pretty voice in the middle of it. It was the speakers. So much money is spent on decor and ambience only to have it ruined by bad speakers. It sounded like a tractor-trailer roaring down the highway, with the occasional bashing of trash cans. It was droning on the entire time we were there. I don't see how the employees can endure a whole shift of it. The speakers belong in the dumpster. If you feel the need to inflict music on customers, get some better speakers, and keep them muted. read more

This was Sunday right when it opened, so someone could have gone in there and made a mess before I came in. The bowl of house salsa was fresh. We ordered quesadillas. I wanted to taste the fresh guacamole. The guacamole and everything was excellent. Hadn't been here in month's but I got reservations for Valentine's Day. Unbeknownst to me they never put me down but that's okay because they fixed it quickly and got us to a table. Service was great, but the food is absolutely ridiculous. The new CEO and COO (as I found out have recently taken over since the last time we went) have completely changed the place and not in a good way. They have completely changed portions of sizes, ramped up prices and their staples, such as the table-side guac, are laughable now. We used to go here for a nice night out, but honestly probably won't be back due to the reasons stated above. I think this change at the top should have been looked at much more carefully. read more

I have been to uncle julios twice now and both visits have not made me wanna go back. The first time I understood it was new and still getting organized. This last time my party of 9 was seated under a long vent and we had an excessive amount of air blowing down on us. Not only were we freezing but the air was so strong that our food, which had nothing special about the taste (bay leaf left in the meat ) was cold with hard cheese in under a minute. Our waitress was so polite and helped in every way possible! Manager basically told us the air was as high as he could get to accommodate the rest of the restaurant! I wanted to try Uncle Julio's and y'all, this week, I did want a margarita. We got in and all was good. A bit loud, but we looked past it. We don't have "dates." Most of our meals (even out) are shoveling it in so we can hit the next "to do." When our waiter came, we ordered two HOUSE margaritas, queso, and I asked for my own little bowl of salsa because we all know I don't work and play well with others. Our waiter was VERY LOUD and talked so fast I had a hard time understanding ANYTHING. VERY EXTRA. Queso came out pretty quickly. We eventually got waters. Margaritas a bit later; not huge, but classy-okay size. Our waiter stopped and said "We'll, I heard you were ready to order...". Um, we are but we hadn't said anything.. We ordered fajitas for two. Easy peasy...and I asked again for my extra salsa. When Joe came back by, my cup of salsa was TOSSED onto the table. It was kind of slammed in front of me. Our meal came out SUPER FAST! The young lady who delivered it was so kind. Very friendly and extremely accommodating. I wish we could have tipped her. Our waiter swooped in a moment later. We commented on how fast it was and how pleased we were about that. He informed us he was glad we were happy because it took an eternity for him....I had to wait 20 minutes for a second cup of salsa!!!! We were out of chips, so I put the bowl by the aisle. Joe came to our table and asked if we needed "another round." Yes, of chips. We had barely even sipped our drinks. They were both OBVIOUSLY still full, but the chips were VERY empty. When he returned with our chips, he pitched them onto the table as he walked by. It wasn't five minutes later until he came by and offered our bill. Okay. Then he proceeded to take the chips and tortillas. I had a fork in my hand and food on the way to my mouth! I said we were still eating. "Oh, I didn't notice." He then came back to clear again. I WAS STILL EATING! He was holding the tortillas container. He slammed it on the table and turned walking away. I called him back and asked what I had done. He looked offended and said nothing was wrong and WE were fine. all of a sudden he was back and forth by our table stopping right next to it but never engaging, asking if we needed anything, etc. Back and forth, back and forth. When he came BACK (I was still having chips and my salsa - love my chips and salsa!), he started clearing the table. Matt and I were visiting, eating, sipping our drinks. HE CLEARED THE TABLE WOTH ME STILL EATING! Y'all!!!! I took my water straw, drank the last of my margarita which Matt and I had been enjoying as we were trying to play married after two VERY hard weeks. Joe ruined that. We ordered two house margaritas (one each). We were charged for the xpfrade which was $4 more. We were specific that we don't partake enough for it to matter, so bring us house. $13 margaritas that Matt didn't get to finish and I had to suck down because the waiter wanted us to leave. He was counting the cash on the table before we had walked to the next booth! We spent $90 on a meal for two!!! And we would have balked a little at the price but not thought twice because we were getting much needed time together. Joe absolutely ruined the meal. I have such a bad opinion of the restaurant by the attitude of one server who was too self centered to care about his customers. I am posting this on Yelp and on the companies website. If you had a good experience, I would love to know and know where in the restaurant you sat. If we ever go back I will request not to be in this person's section. And I will proudly explain to the manager why. For now, I will return to The Plaza. I get to see former band kids who make me feel like a rockstar, don't have to beg for my own bowl of salsa, and get fo eat my entire meal without feeling like the waiter would take my food out of my mouth to get me out the door. Small menu, I order a Grande sangria and it came in a small glass. My Husband ordered fajitas and it came in small portions and nothing was seasoned and I ordered a bowl it didn't have seasoning. Took my girlfriend at this restaurant and let me tell you, amazing service. I was seated immediately and had a drink within 5 mins of walking into Don Julio's. Now the guacamole was a solid 4 but I come from a family that could make some really good guacamole so no hard thoughts on that. I ordered the steak fajitas for two and at first it seemed like it wouldn't fill the both of us but let me reassure you, it did. Horrible experience here. The host, first of our 2 servers and bar drinks were the best part of the experience. 45$ on 2 plates of cold, bland food. Beans tasted like bean and water, rice tasted like tomato paste that hadn't cooked out, and the tacos....the tacos were cold from the second they hit the table. We ate less than 1/2 of the food and the server came back and said the manager took off the free side of guacamole, the first server brought out since it was a birthday. We decided to give Uncle Julios when we were moving our son back up to Lubbock for College (Wreck'em!!!). 1st let me start by saying we've eaten at a lot of fine restaurants over the years and there are 2 things that make for a great dining experience in my opinion. The first is great food, and the 2nd is excellent service, both of which we experienced. Our server Brandi's knowledge of the menu was spot on. Brandi explained they were a scratch kitchen and pointed us towards the fajita's, table side guacamole and mixed berry margarita's along with the habanero salsa, all of which were absolutely amazing. If you're in town looking for great Mexican food then I would certainly give Uncle Julio's a try. I would also strongly suggest asking for Brandi.
