Food looked good in the pictureBut the taste was so so

Nice restaurant. But My waitress wasn't very attentive. The food looked good when it came out, but I think they cook everything with a little sugar in it because everything tasted sweet It was definitely way too expensive for what I got Everything came out to $35. I got a beef fajita plate. The beef was chewy The salsa was mild

Beans and rice I specifically did NOT ask for when their menu prompted.

Hey, Uncle Julio's, could you maybe start paying attention to your Door Dash orders? When you very clearly ask if a customer wants beans and rice, and that customer says NO, please honor that. You have now ruined about $8 of my $44 meal by including them, because now disgusting, %#@&'ing bean juice is all over my condiments. I will decline to order from you in the future.

Fake ass chimichanga, ain't no chile relleno dude!!!

We like this restaurant, and our server was great. But when they promoted a new menu item "chile relleno" and it is Nothing but a flour tortilla filled with queso! He'll no, don't even try it! That's a chimichanga you stupid fools

This restaurant is an interesting mix of high end food and Tex-Mex and if I'm being honest it's not too successful of a merge, the food isn't quite as cozy as cheap Tex-Mex that populates Lubbock not is as high quality that it melts my face. It's in the in-between and such is reflected as such. The service was mildly subpar, not like bad, just insufficient. I don't know it's unique but not unique enough to make up for how average it is... 6/15

Carnitas street tacos (3 per order) and my outstanding Dos Equis amber beer
    Scott B.

Stopped in for a weekend lunch before driving home. The Tres Amigos Margarita was phenomenal maybe the best we've had? My Dos Equis Amber was smooth with caramel notes, and I also was surprised by the smoothness and the tastiness of the Modelo Negra beer. Food wise, you won't be disappointed by the flavoring and large portion of the Carnitas street tacos- I'd recommend holding the grilled jalapeños though. Good service at the bar.

Delicious. Their beef enchiladas are always spectacular. Service and atmosphere are great as well.

Fast service, great food, great alternatives to the usual. Their salsa served with the chips, New Mexico style, is out of this world!

My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. A good meal.

The restaurant is large and has plenty of seating. We were seated quickly on a Friday evening. Like most mexican, tex-mex restaurant, we were given chips and salsa to start. I feel like I'm not usually picky with something so simple. However, the chips didn't seem to have enough flavor. I felt like it could have used more salt. The salsa also tasted a bit off. Specifically, it tasted more sour than I would have liked. I ordered a bistec plate (not sure what it was specifically as I'm writing this a few weeks from my original visit). There was sauteed beef with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon. It was delicious! Everything was flavored nicely. Went great inside the warm flour tortillas that were provided. The sides of mexican rice and pinto beans were good as well. Aside from the food, the service was great. Attentive and kind. I still wish I could have paid for this meal, especially now in retrospect. My Lubbock host was too quick and went ahead and paid for the two of us. As we left, there was something wrong with the doors on the way out. I don't remember that being an issue as we came in. One of the sets of doors just seemed to jam. It was probably just me though (it was). Overall, I'd recommend this place! Maybe it was an off day for the chips and salsa. Otherwise, everything was great.

We started with the house chips and salsa trio, which is always a win here. The chips were warm and crisp, and the variety of salsas--from bright and fresh to deeper and more roasted--made it easy to keep reaching for "just one more." A solid way to kick things off. For my main, I went the veggie route, and honestly, this was the standout of the meal. The sizzling vegetable fajitas arrived steaming hot and loaded with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, and squash--perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and served on a cast-iron skillet that kept everything hot down to the last bite. Colorful, hearty, and surprisingly satisfying, even without meat. The rest of the table went more traditional with enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, and queso, and everything looked generous and comforting in that familiar, crave-worthy Tex-Mex way. Portions are filling, flavors are approachable, and it's easy to find something for everyone at the table. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a lively bar area and cozy booths that make it a great spot for a casual dinner, family outing, or low-key night out. Service was friendly and efficient, and everything came out exactly as expected. Abuelo's may be a familiar name, but when you're in the mood for reliable Tex-Mex, solid vegetarian options, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, it absolutely hits the mark.
