Tex-Mex is a perfect cuisine to me. I am not always craving it, but when I am, nothing hits harder. Through my years in college, I discovered Taqueria Jalisco to be the gospel and genuinely the best Tex-Mex in Lubbock by a long shot. My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. After an afternoon drive from Ft. Worth, I made it to Lubbock to spend some time with a special person. This was the recommended spot. I took her word. The restaurant is large and has plenty of seating. We were seated quickly on a Friday evening. Like most mexican, tex-mex restaurant, we were given chips and salsa to start. I feel like I'm not usually picky with something so simple. However, the chips didn't seem to have enough flavor. I felt like it could have used more salt. The salsa also tasted a bit off. Specifically, it tasted more sour than I would have liked. I ordered a bistec plate (not sure what it was specifically as I'm writing this a few weeks from my original visit). There was sauteed beef with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon. It was delicious! Everything was flavored nicely. Went great inside the warm flour tortillas that were provided. The sides of mexican rice and pinto beans were good as well. Aside from the food, the service was great. Attentive and kind. I still wish I could have paid for this meal, especially now in retrospect. My Lubbock host was too quick and went ahead and paid for the two of us. As we left, there was something wrong with the doors on the way out. I don't remember that being an issue as we came in. One of the sets of doors just seemed to jam. It was probably just me though (it was). Overall, I'd recommend this place! Maybe it was an off day for the chips and salsa. Otherwise, everything was great. read more

This is the top five Mexican meals I've ever had in my life. Restaurant was clean and the flavors were amazing. I had Birra Taxos and Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas, my mom had a Shredded Chicken Burrito. Everything was super fresh, epic flavor and the white staff was very nice. Great food! I would hands down say that this one of the best mexican restaurant in lubbock texas, the atmosphere is great and the service is very polite. The wait time can get pretty long on weekends so I would recomed calling ahead. I think that the decor is nice and clean, the only thing that I would say is that it can get very loud but its a popular restaurant so thats to be expected at times. I will also add that the menu is very inexpensive so its a great place to eat if you want to go out but dont want to spend a ton. read more

This review is from a visit in January of 2024. A true taste of Guadalajara and possibly the best Mexican food in Lubbock (I've been to Guadalajara and this restaurant would survive there!). Enchiladas, Campechana, Menudo, Argentinian Milanesa, even Salvadorian food like Siete Mares! Made with large portions, fair prices, and massive drinks. Good service and impeccably delicious. Cannot recommend more highly for a legit hole-in-the-wall place in Lubbock. This is one of the best held and longest running secrets in Lubbock, period! Jalisco's is one of the many places in Lubbock where you can eat authentic Mexican cuisine. The service is always impeccable from when your host/hostess seats you, to when you're cashing out. It usually pretty loud, but if you get sat in the back room its not too bad. The food is great, I always get the Tejas Plate, it has carne guisada, beans rice, and enchiladas of your choice. After hearing rave accolades about this place, it was incumbent on me to give it a try. There are some unwritten basic protocols in the food service industry, one being that the appearance of the restaurant should appear as tidy, instilling in the customer feelings that the kitchen, too, is clean. Here, the outside is dingy, maybe "rustic" if you're comfortable with euphemisms. The "front" door is at the rear of the place, lodged with heavy wrought iron. You feel like you're getting a tattoo in a rough area. Once inside, the dining room is replete with food all over the floor. I saw no one cleaning it. My table had a tomato slice, onion pieces and ground round mounds that I had to shift with my shoe to the aisle. The menu was genuinely distasteful. After scouring every page, I couldn't find a single photo of anything that was vaguely appetizing. Poor quality pictures of homely food made ordering challenging, why I stayed a late carte. The food was overwhelmingly ordinary. The chicken taco meat had an acceptable taste and came with sparse vegetables and cheese. The enchilada was goopy with hamburger meat and bland. I had to request tabasco sauce. The diners were notably gargantuan, also making one wonder what happens if you consume this diet regularly. With such simple recipes, it's Hard to understand how difficult it is to find captivating genuine Mexican cuisine. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more
