Chips, rice, beans, and al pastor Burrito Grande
    Jamie S.

So good had to take it to go! The burritos are HUGE. I order the burrito grande special with Al pastor and topped with Queso. We also got Queso with our chips and conpletely devoured. The lady serving us was very friendly , I'm glad she's back! 10/10 will be coming back.

This is breakfast quesadilla takeout. There are 2 layers of the quesadilla so twice what you see! (*note I added the Salsa)

Ordered takeout for dinner. Unfortunately it was the evening of storms and bad flooding. When our driver who was picking up finally made it to the restaurant, someone else had taken our order! Thankfully Picantes took care of us, remade the order, and had him quickly on his way. I ordered a Breakfast Quesadilla (pro tip - Picantes serves their breakfast all day) and the combo eggs, bacon, cheese in the quesadilla with salsa and sour cream was just right. I'm not sure if I received the normal portion on the Quesadilla but it was a lot! I have plenty left over for lunch tomorrow! We also ordered a Queso to split (they do not give chips with queso so we also ordered the chips & salsa, a curious custom but good to know when ordering). Queso was quite good!

    Menudo sample, yes, excellent

I came for a breakfast burrito. It's cooked fresh, but nothing special. The tortilla is large, fresh, but not homemade. It's fine. What is nice about this place is all you can eat Menudo, which is DELICIOUS. There are better burritos, these are average. The Menudo is top shelf, and looking at several of the plates coming out, lots of their food looks great. I'll be back, and I hope that they start making their own tortillas soon.

This review is solely based off of their breakfast burrito! I've tried a ridiculous amount of places here searching for a good breakfast taco and this place is the best in regards to the price for the portion size! I loved that the tortilla was actually heated on the grill. Good ratio of meat and egg. $4.50 for one bacon, egg, and cheese burrito! It's not the best breakfast burrito I've ever had, but it's the better option considering we're in Lubbock. Kinda resembles Fuzzy's taco shop in terms of flavor. All of the staff were friendly! Food came out fast! There isn't a drive thru, but it's a quick process for a good price.

We came for breakfast and sat down. Our waitress promptly greeted us and took our drink orders. The dining area is roomy but the booths are not large. The four of us fit just fine but there wasn't a lot of "elbow" room. We will probably ask for a table next time. We ordered the breakfast burritos and the Plato de Huevos. Our waitress was great in helping us decide what to order and she was prompt with coffee and drink refills. The food arrived in a timely manner and tasted very good. Overall our experience at Picantes was great.

Go-to place in Lubbock for breakfast burritos, it's as simple as that. I've tried a bunch of others but nobody even comes close!

My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. A good meal.

The restaurant is large and has plenty of seating. We were seated quickly on a Friday evening. Like most mexican, tex-mex restaurant, we were given chips and salsa to start. I feel like I'm not usually picky with something so simple. However, the chips didn't seem to have enough flavor. I felt like it could have used more salt. The salsa also tasted a bit off. Specifically, it tasted more sour than I would have liked. I ordered a bistec plate (not sure what it was specifically as I'm writing this a few weeks from my original visit). There was sauteed beef with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon. It was delicious! Everything was flavored nicely. Went great inside the warm flour tortillas that were provided. The sides of mexican rice and pinto beans were good as well. Aside from the food, the service was great. Attentive and kind. I still wish I could have paid for this meal, especially now in retrospect. My Lubbock host was too quick and went ahead and paid for the two of us. As we left, there was something wrong with the doors on the way out. I don't remember that being an issue as we came in. One of the sets of doors just seemed to jam. It was probably just me though (it was). Overall, I'd recommend this place! Maybe it was an off day for the chips and salsa. Otherwise, everything was great.

We started with the house chips and salsa trio, which is always a win here. The chips were warm and crisp, and the variety of salsas--from bright and fresh to deeper and more roasted--made it easy to keep reaching for "just one more." A solid way to kick things off. For my main, I went the veggie route, and honestly, this was the standout of the meal. The sizzling vegetable fajitas arrived steaming hot and loaded with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, and squash--perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and served on a cast-iron skillet that kept everything hot down to the last bite. Colorful, hearty, and surprisingly satisfying, even without meat. The rest of the table went more traditional with enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, and queso, and everything looked generous and comforting in that familiar, crave-worthy Tex-Mex way. Portions are filling, flavors are approachable, and it's easy to find something for everyone at the table. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a lively bar area and cozy booths that make it a great spot for a casual dinner, family outing, or low-key night out. Service was friendly and efficient, and everything came out exactly as expected. Abuelo's may be a familiar name, but when you're in the mood for reliable Tex-Mex, solid vegetarian options, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, it absolutely hits the mark.
